This week, Leo & Steven begin our deep dive into David Cronenberg's amazing creature feature THE FLY (1986)! They talk about Seth Brundle's pick-up game, unfortunate last names, nailing the mood lighting, the power of "the flesh", lines and exchanges with multiple meanings, the "death" of Brundle and The Fly and what happens when the first 45 minute of a 90 minute movie packs in more charisma, character and engaging ideas than most 3 hour art house horror films. SITC is back with the long-awaited second installment of our horror series just in time for Halloween. Hot or not? You decide. Body horror brings on the heat thanks to Jeff Goldblum's insectile sex symbol Seth Brundle in David Cronenberg's classic remake of THE FLY (1986). Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland prove graphic sex can have narrative value in Nicolas Roeg's enigmatic meditation on grief DON'T LOOK NOW (1973). Mia Farrow gets down with the devil and suffers the ultimate perversion of pregnancy in Roman Polanski's legendary ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968).
There's a moment in The Fly (1986) in which Seth Brundle–well into his transformation into Brundlefly–explains that he must vomit on a donut before eating it. The camera cuts away to show Geena Davis's reaction, which is the same reaction David Cronenberg evokes in his viewers throughout the film. Grotesque yet surprisingly moving, The Fly is more than disturbing, wonderful makeup: it's a look at a brilliant man who cannot understand the limits of his own vision, like his colleagues Drs. Faustus, Jekyll, and Frankenstien. Interested in hearing what Cronenberg himself has to say about The Fly and his other films? Check out this collection of interviews. This week, Legends of Halloween checks in with the inventor of pod casting, Seth Brundle. Brundle, played by Jeff, uh, Goldblum, is a reclusive scientist on the cutting edge of baboon-killing technology. While trying to crack the code of instantaneous teleportation, he recklessly experiments on himself. But when a common housefly gets caught in the machine, the result is an exercise in body horror that only David Cronenberg could deliver. The film, a remake of the 1958 classic, co-stars Geena Davis, who was at the time Goldblum's real-life girlfriend, as the reporter and love interest Ronnie who delivers the classic line, “Be afraid, be very afraid!” The film won an Academy Award for Best Makeup, inspired a sequel and has even been turned into an opera scored by Howard Shore. Now we're stepping into the pod to beam ourselves directly into your ears - let's hope they stay attached! - as we talk about the 1986 version of The Fly! What happens when science goes horribly wrong? Join us on Screams & Streams as we dissect David Cronenberg's 1986 horror classic, "The Fly." We begin with Mike's gripping retelling of the plot, focusing on the ill-fated Dr. Seth Brundle and his tragic transformation due to a botched teleportation experiment. To lighten the mood, we're sipping on a themed pina colada, crafted to capture the grotesque essence of Brundlefly's metamorphosis, a drink that promises to be as amusing as it is revolting. We then split hairs over our differing first impressions: Chad's disenchantment upon rewatching contrasts sharply with Sam's appreciation for the film's dark allure. Mike, meanwhile, dives into nostalgia, recounting his junior high experience of the movie. Expect an animated debate as we spotlight our favorite scenes—the grotesque transformations, Geena Davis's memorable lines, and even the eyebrow-raising arm-wrestling scene in the bar.In the final segments, we delve into the film's behind-the-scenes magic, discussing casting choices, the intricate makeup process, and deleted scenes that never made it to the final cut. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a curious newcomer, our comprehensive analysis offers fresh insights into this unforgettable piece of horror cinema. This week, Sarah and MJ are joined by Sarah's husband, Martin Buddery, to talk about David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of The Fly. They talk about the effects, what insect they would like to be gene spliced with, and the efficient way the script gives viewers believable reasons for Seth Brundle's gruesome transformation!
Omega nerd, Seth Brundle is actively running experiments to begin teleportation, only problem - he can't move people. But after a mild miscommunication with his journalist-girlfriend, he decides to try the unthinkable - but unfortunately the unfathomable happens! “Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.” David Cronenberg has made some incredible movies that are also incredibly gross. This episode of the CineFix Top 100 dives into one of his best, The Fly. Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis star in the story of inventor Seth Brundle and his attempt to master teleportation only to end up becoming a fly for his trouble! Clint and Cal spend another week waiting for Alex to rejoin them, but in the meantime they dig in to the amazing work of professional face-melter Chris Walas, just how much Mel Brooks campaigned for the movie and lament the unfortunate missed opportunity to “collude for Croney” to get more of the Canadian body horror maestro's work on the Top 100. Meanwhile, producer Dan's algorithm teleported itself 15 feet across a room and is now more powerful than ever before… CineFix Top 100 is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. Hey there, horror fans! We're back in the basement where we're talking all things The Fly. How did this underdog of a movie become such a success? And seriously, how does a movie about a man turning into a fly work so well on the screen? We're taking a trip back in time to the 1950s when paranoia and fear were all the rage after the A-bomb and World War II. We're also exploring the 1980s when Reagan and the AIDS epidemic were in full swing. Let's just say the political and cultural context of each era definitely influenced the movies. We're digging into performances like Patricia Owens' impressive work despite having an insect phobia while filming, Jeff Goldblum's iconic turn as Seth Brundle, and Eric Stoltz's weirdly on-brand turn in The Fly II.David Cronenberg's direction made the movie his own, and we're discussing how the creature design worked in each film. Plus, did you know that The Fly (1958) was actually in color? We fully Mandella'd ourselves. It's weird, y'all. There be color here. Join us for a discussion about the compatibility of horror and sci-fi and why The Fly continues to give us chills even after all these years.Curious to check out the short story that started it all? Be afraid, be very afraid because this week we are talking about the body horror cult classic Cronenberg film, The Fly. Seth Brundle a brilliant scientist has made one of the greatest discoveries in human history, the ability to teleport objects from one place to another. There's only one little problem though, it can only teleport inanimate objects and nothing living. At least not yet. While testing the machine on himself, a housefly slips into the teleporting chamber causing the two to fuse into one. Now, Seth slowly begins to change into a part human/part fly creature while his partner Veronica can only standby and watch as he transforms into something else entirely. So pick your colors and get ready to join the frontlines ofCultural VandalismMandatory Workplace Harassment TrainingWe've seen now year after year the slow destruction of our culture. From the homogenization of design, the erasure of certain hair colors in media, and the constant need for reboots and remakes that fly in the face of the original. To the before times, of revisionist architecture and history, manipulated narratives about certain political parties just deciding to be the other party. Our culture has become so embattled that you dare not have your favorite property adapted into a new medium because what comes out the other side is going to closer resemble Seth Brundle before Geena Davis ends his misery.Workplaces are supposed to be a place of, you guessed it, work. Long ago it was a semi social place, where perhaps you went out for dinner or drinks after work. Maybe you met a person you wanted to get to know better. However in the current state of the world of teaching certain groups they should literally have it all, while other groups need to be supportive, but not too supportive, but also don't retreat because all of those things are bad. Enter HR a bastion of derailing productive people since the first group of worthless individuals got together and said, what if we just made a department for workplace gossip. So here we are sitting in hours long trainings where you learn nothing, but at least they get to deflect any liability when you get reported for complimenting the pretty girl in the next cubicle for literally ANYTHING! (Also not complimenting her.)All that plus a steal of a deal on prostitutes, fish news, and Andy reads an announcement from yesteryear.

It's the film that turned Jeff Goldblum into an icon. A quirky icon, but an icon nonetheless. The Chumps dissect Geena Davis's genius "reaction acting," Seth Brundle's loft, why director David Cronenberg played the doctor in the film, and why this is arguably the most pro-choice movie of all time. PLUS: Luke has a hissy-fit over Daemond Targaryen, and Corrye almost kills himself with a new coffee mug.
This week we tackle the meaning of life and in so, the nature of death. Things get real this week as Andy brings to the table the 1987 body horror science fiction masterpiece, The Fly. This David Croneberg film stars Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, a scientist hell bent on realizing his life dream of making teleportation a reality, no matter how many monkeys he needs to explode. Geena Davis, plays Veronica Qualife, a reporter at Super Fun Science Magazine, who's looking for her next big topic, and Mr Brundle is ready to give it to her. What follows is an insane story that taught Andy that death, no matter how tragic and sad, is a necessary part of life. Come for the vomit covered limbs, stay for the existential dread. This film is the epitome of body horror, done by the master of body horror: David Cronenberg. If you have never seen The Fly, you'll definitely be saying to yourself "Ew, David". Artwork by Dusting Goebel (@dgoebel00 on Instagram) Synopsis Jeff Goldblum plays Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist that has successfully developed a working transporter. When he shows it to Geena Davis' Veronica Quaife there are still a few kinks to work out with transporting living tissue. Vis-à-vis keeping the insides in. In an impulsive moment, after he corrects the issue, he decided to transport himself as the first human subject. However, he was so preoccupied with whether he could, and didn't stop to think if he should. As time goes on, he slowly realizes that something went wrong and his body experiences a terrifying metamorphosis. https://youtu.be/bdB02IufaW0 Review of The Fly (1986) The Fly still works. David Cronenberg, the director, has made his career off of pushing the limits, and in this movie, by doing so, he creates one of the best body horror movies ever filmed. This film won an Oscar for best makeup for good reason. Seth Brundle's slow transformation moves from the superficial to the grotesque so gradually, that you still think of him as a man even when he becomes a straight up monster. That is actually a big benefit to the film, because you maintain empathy for an utterly disgusting creature up to the final shot of the film. Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum work really well together, and have excellent chemistry on screen, which makes sense because they eventually married for several years. Davis' performance really grounds the film for the audience, because we are really watching all of the events of the film from the perspective of Veronica Quaife. Her reactions of wonder and horror really sells the special effects that we witness. Jeff Goldblum is the perfect casting for a mad scientist, as the character's eccentricities are utterly believable coming from him. Although, I have to say, this is only about 50% Goldbluhm compared to how eccentric he is today. Overall, the story, characters and special effects are all masterful and don't age a bit in the 36 years since its release. On this episode of Sound in Space things are getting a little weird as our trio look at the science behind body horror movies and , as you do, in particular - movies where someone gets turned into an animal / insect against their will because…well we've already done time travel. However , is there more science in these schlock horrors than we're expecting? Emmm.. First up under the microscope is The Fly - David Cronenberg's 1986 insect starring horror is genuine classic which saw Jeff Goldblum slowly change from Seth Brundle into BrundleFly after messing around with his new teleportation invention but is it possible to mix human genes with anything else ? If so, why would we do it? And what are the changes of coming up the telepods in the first place and then Tusk - Kevin Smith went from comic books and clerks to using his podcast army to create a horror where an annoying podcast host is held against his will and turned into a Walrus but could one really do that? Is this the movie that finally breaks Barry? And if annoying podcasters are targets will the next episode of Sound of Space be completely in Wallrus grunts? When producers Kip Ohman and Stuart Cornfeld decided to update an obscure 1958 horror B-movie, they likely had no idea that they would be embarking on a journey towards creating the groundbreaking critical success that would become The Fly. Directed by David Cronenberg, The Fly tells the story of Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist and inventor, who has created what he believes to be a teleporting device. While conducting an experiment, he unwittingly allows a fly to enter the device with him, resulting in the two being spliced together. The film opened in 1986 to both critical and commercial acclaim, ultimately earning an Academy Award for Best Makeup and four Saturn Awards for Cronenberg and lead actors Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. “I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the insect is awake. ¿O no? 'Dealing With Worry - Pt 2'Season One - Episode EightIn tonight's service we conclude our look at the topic of worry and particularly think about those worries that are truly worth worrying about. To help with that, we have a guest with plenty on his plate. Dr. Seth Brundle from 'The Fly' (1986) turns up, and discusses his recent transportation experiment that sadly went wrong, and is gradually turning him into a vomiting insect. Then a shocking attack takes place in the church, so be warned! Not long after, we are delighted to have our Bible reading, from the bass player in our church band - Tom Price. Then Peter chats to us about worry and the idea of perspective in a sermon which mentions his daughter rolling around on the urine soaked floor of a public toilet. Perhaps the highlight of the entire service. After that, we have a time of prayer and meditation, that will (kinda) transport you to a nightclub - where you can visualise taking each worry, and handing them over. When that is complete, it's straight in with a song called 'Help Me Find the Yeti.' A truly heartfelt ditty about how hard it can be to find perspective in the midst of our worries...that moment when we can say, 'this situation I am in is crap...and yet...maybe it's not the end of the world.' That 'and yet' can be as elusive as the Yeti. ha ha. Can you see what we did there, Covers? Peter then chats to Seth for a while, up in the rafters of the church, and then that's it. End of service, for another week. You've Never Seen September continues with a look at a film that puts the ick in icky and a fly in Jeff Goldblum: The Fly. Starring the aforementioned Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, the two play Seth Brundle and Veronica Quaife, a scientist and the journalist tasked with discovering the technology he's invented. This invention ends up having horrible consequences on both of their lives, including turning one of them into an abomination of science. DC Titan's Richard Hatem and award-winning screenwriter Maggie the Odd join Chris to talk about the film's central relationship, the impressive special effects, and vomit drop. You can follow Chris Stachiw at @Casualty_Chris and the Kulturecast @kulturecast. The music is Tigerblood Jewel's The Bayou. You can also subscribe to the Kulturecast on iTunes here. Before life, uh, found a way or he had ever heard of a melt stick, Jeff Goldblum was breaking hearts and changing the world as inspired loner scientist Seth Brundle (and later, lady-killer Brundlefly) in the masterful recreation of The Fly. In this episode, we explore the 1986 David Cronenberg classic with the help of our pal Ludwig Kietzmann.
This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett are joined by Seth Brundle and Dr. Charles HF Davis for an honest and open discussion about the myriad of ways cishet Black men are failing the Black community. This should go without saying but let's just say it: We LOVE Black men. We love the resilience, the vulnerability, the joy in spite of a country that seeks to harm, the righteous anger, the creativity and all of the good-good that goes along with being a Black man in America and beyond! But…There's some fuckbois in this house. We dig deeper into the recent story of hip hop star Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez and why the latter thought pulling a gun on the former was anything other than the absolute worst idea on the planet. Plus, we'll talk about the various ways Black men can show up for each other and their communities without falling victim to toxic masculinity. But first...A Tough Question:This week, Jarrett seeks advice from Tre'vell on the screening process Black folks should implement to screen out potential White love interests who aren't as "down for the cause" as they should be. DIS/Honorable MentionsThis week, we give an honorable mention to Mike Hill who has a new book out and Jamie Harrison who could potentially unseat Lady G in the Senate. Click here if you're interested in making a donation to Harrison's campaign. We've also got some honorable mentions for the team over at the Los Angeles Times who handled the Chicano Moratorium retrospective and Black game show contestants. DISHONORABLE mentions go out to The Whitney Museum which recently “acquired” works from Black and Black queer and trans artists via print sales for the movement. In addition to the art they also had a bunch of audacity. Lastly, a dishonorable mention to the police involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake. Black Lives Matter...kind of weird that we keep having to say this. Show NotesKeep up to date on this week's guests here and here. Today, Amy and Sarah take you down one of the grosser paths ever covered on the podcast. Another re-boot of an earlier film, The Fly (1986) featured young Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum as tragic lovers Veronica Quaife and Seth Brundle. This movie forces the girls to confront the most important question of all: what exactly are those body parts in Brundlefly's medicine cabinet?
David Cronenberg's 1986 film The Fly is a body-horror-machine vs. man- mad-scientist's delight with Jeff Goldblum tearing up the scenery in the best way as Seth Brundle, whose inventions & ambitions will drive him mad, and Geena Davis as the lovestruck journalist who gets swept along in his madness. We live in an era of remakes and sequels. Sound familiar? That is because August we did Originals, movies where Corey (@coreyrstarr) or Jonathan (@berkreviews) had seen a remake but never the original film that inspired it. This month, they are flipping the script and watching a remake of an original they either loved or, at the very least, saw in the aptly named theme of REMAKES!!! As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 2 - The Fly (1986) Not too long ago, Corey and Jonathan watched the 1958 Sci-fi classic The Fly. Fortunately, Corey hasn't seen the amazing David Cronenberg's remake of the film starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Jonathan has seen this remake and is extremely excited to revisit Seth Brundle as he begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Have you ever wanted to pick a man’s mind on what led him to the alter. Like, why her and why now? Well, we did too. So we did. Seth Brundle of AspireTV’s Butter+Brown joins us to share a few cheat codes for the ladies.
Join Turg and Randy Z as they blow bubbles and exchange giggles with their guest Chris McMullen (aka Seth Brundle) -- television personality, expert lifestyle content creator, chef and fashion professional -- and discuss transitions, learning your lessons, establishing your worth and... Have you ever fallen out of love with a past passion that you suddenly gave up? Chris shares his journey up to 30 and how his intense love for fashion and styling actually forced him away from the profession. We can all relate to the saying "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life", but is this true? Millennials are always touting their ability to innovate. It doesn't just stop with tech or goods - but with mindset and social movements. Loving what you do is great, but not when it taxes you beyond what you thought possible. Setting goals and maintaining your interest level so that you don't fall out of love with your passion is important. But, what happens when the reality of 30 dawns? Is a transition always beneficial to help renew your lust for life? Transitioning into something new can only happen if you know your worth Turg asks how to someone can assess their worth after learning their talents and working to transition into something new. Sometimes it's not easy to identify how to go about learning what to ask or how to negotiate for your knowledge. In essence, this is what we do when we market ourselves. But, how often do we understand what we are worth? Chris mentions how he seeks out others who might know more or have more specific experience for answers to this question. It's important to make inroads and network with people that can help set your expectations. Turg mentions that vocalizing ideas and concepts, with those you can trust, is an important step to harnessing true success in your 30s. Do you gravitate to mentors that can help you identify your worth or impact at 30? Success versus Happiness - which will win out at 30? When you learn how to succeed, do you win the day? Does success bring happiness? It's not easy to identify what you will be doing 3 years from now, let alone 10 years from now. So how do you measure your success relative to where you want to be? Chris shares how he quit his passion - something he mastered - to do something he had no knowledge about. When you don't have a starting point - or even a reference point for your next step in life you might start to feel lost. But, it's important to leverage your network, friends and family for insight and to help level you out. It's also important to maintain your happiness throughout your journey. What is your definition of happiness? Failures help define our future, so use them to learn and grow We all have moments in our lives that were dark. We have all been in a place that we never want to go back to. Instead of using it as a weapon against the world, use it as a motivator to help you propel yourself into your future. Chris, Turg and Randy talk how being broke, alone, and afraid helped motivate them into their future successes. Investing in yourself at 30 and maintaining your confidence levels are critical. How and when do you do it? What happens if you have no positive experiences to draw upon when you're feeling down? Bringing it full circle - surround yourself with positivity and people who care. Reach out to mentors and people who can help. Diversify your skills and talents, know your weaknesses and keep forging on and use your failures to help you understand how not to repeat the same mistakes more than once.
This week we're covering one of the big ones. A remake of the 1958 B-movie sci-fi sort-of-classic that, in any other hands could have been just as cheesy as the original. But in the hands of David Cronenberg, it transforms into something else. Both a milestone of gross-out gore and shocking creature effects, and a touching, tragic love story about a quirky mad scientist and the journalist who tries to love him despite the... changes he's going through. It's Cronenberg's 1986 sci-fi/horror chamber drama hit The Fly. This was a lot of people's first foray into the twisted world of Cronenberg, especially if discovered on late-night cable as a child. Nick and Chris are joined by podcasters Heidi Schilling (A Schilling for Your Thoughts, Campfire Curmudgeon) and Derk Harron (Slash Page, Here Comes the Pitch) to revisit Seth Brundle's laboratory to find out if it deserves its revered mantle atop the VHS video store horror section shelves.
It's episode 126...and be afraid... be very afraid... The Fly (1986) tells the story of Seth Brundle, a scientist who invents a way to transport objects through space. When testing the machine on himself, he accidentally fuses his DNA with that of a fly which was trapped in the machine - and he begins to slowly turn into a man/fly hybrid! We talk about the benefits of the boys in blue; the convenience of insect repellent sprays; and we finally answer once and for all: which animal is it best to splice your dna with, and slowly turn into? All of which leads to one question...how would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. Corinne, Rosie, and Tim conduct a highly unscientific experiment by discussing David Cronenberg's gooey remake of The Fly from 1986. When not averting our eyes from the film's grotesque visuals, we discuss Jeff Goldblum's quirky and awkward performance as Seth Brundle, the disturbingly visceral make-up effects, and the film's surprisingly nonjudgmental stance on reproductive rights.
