Following his Sept. 29 investiture, Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., announced one of his first initiatives was to bring “MSU to Michigan,” and he did so by leading MSU's inaugural Spartan Bus Tour. We set out from campus Monday morning October 21 from Kellogg Center. (0:20) - President Guskiewicz opens the tour. (1:14) - Our first stop was in Mount Pleasant to visit the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways. Eric Rodriguez is interim public relations director for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. (4:20) - The next stop on the tour was in Le Roy to visit M&R Pickling, an Amish-owned canning company founded in 2013. The company is a client of the MSU Product Center, which supports innovation and growth for those in food, agriculture and natural resource sectors. Then it was on to a stop at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, the largest National Guard training facility in the United States and the main training facility for the Michigan National Guard. At the stop, we met Michigan native Colonel Lucas J. Lanczy, the current commander of JMTC and got a brief welcome and history of the site to learn about the center's economic and environmental impact in the region.  (6:15) - We remained in Grayling for our next stop at a somewhat hidden MSU jewel, Camp Wa Wa Sum. Brandon Baswell is service manager with IPF Real Estate. (8:13) - As we headed to Traverse City to spend the night, President G, as we affectionately called our leader on the tour, reflected on Day 1. (11:40) - Day 2 of the tour began in Traverse City at the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center. The 137-acre Center was founded in 1979 by the area's fruit growers who wanted a research center of their own — a place that could help with unique issues that come with growing fruit in a region unlike any other — so they turned to MSU. Nikki Rothwell is an MSU extension specialist and coordinator of the center. (16:02) - After a group walk up part of the Sleepng Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Glen Arbor, we enjoyed lunch at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club, a nationally renowned golf destination located on the shores of Lake Michigan, offering two championship golf courses. Founded in 1999, the golf club is built on the bluffs above the shore of Lake Michigan.  Arcadia Bluffs is routinely rated a top 50 course in the country. We heard a presentation from club representatives and alumni who graduated from MSU's top turfgrass management program. Then it was on to Ludington State Park, a public recreation area located two miles north of Ludington, occupying 5,300 acres between the shores of Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Ethan Theuerkauf, an MSU assistant professor and coastal geomorphologist described his research that focuses on how and why coastal landscapes, such as beaches, barrier islands and wetlands change over time.  As we boarded the bus in Ludington on our way to the Martinez Farm in Conklin, we learned more about MSU Migrant Student Services. Day 2 of the tour ended with an evening reception at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Teresa Dunn, a Mexican American artist and MSU professor who has artwork on view in the museum joined the group and talked about her art. (19:25) - Day 3 of the tour began with a stop at Muskegon High School to learn about current and future pre-college programs in teaching and osteopathic medicine.  (23:24) - Next was a stop in Rockford to view PFAS remediation sites. MSU's Center for PFAS Research, formed in 2020, is an interdisciplinary center that leads agricultural and natural resource PFAS research in Michigan and works with communities to create remediation strategies.  (26:08) - Next, the Spartan Bus Tour headed to MSU's Grand Rapids Innovation Park that anchors the “Medical Mile” in Grand Rapids. It includes the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building and Perrigo's North American corporate headquarters. MSU's College of Human Medicine has roots here as well, located in the nearby Secchia Center.  Then it was off to visit Herman Miller, a subsidiary of MillerKnoll that produces office furniture, equipment and home furnishings. (28:07) - As our extraordinary driver, Tina Martin from Dean Trailways, began taking us to Hickory Corners and a visit to the Kellogg Biological Station, KBS interim director Jeff Conner hopped on the bus to prepare us for our visit to this MSU jewel. The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, or KBS, is MSU's largest off-campus education complex and one of North America's premier inland field stations. ...

According to the 2020 census, there are 62.1 million Hispanics in the United States or 18.7 percent of the population. It's also the fastest growing ethnic group in the country. Yet even with the strength in numbers these data may suggest, many young Hispanics are still struggling to find success in higher education and the workplace. This episode is dedicated to better understanding how one university professor and the non-profit Hispanic 100 Educational Foundation is making a difference in the lives of young people who will someday be our leaders. Guest Bio Dr. Eric Rodriguez eaches a variety of business, management, and I/O psychology courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at California State University–Fullerton, as well as Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California. He is also a principal and founder of Focused Leader Consulting Group, a boutique consulting firm centered on people and organizational development. In that practice, Eric and his colleagues leverage a variety of learning tools and interventions to improve relationships and drive organizational performance. Eric earned his doctoral degree from Pepperdine University and a MBA from Azusa Pacific University, as well as a wide array of certifications in a variety of assessments and learning programs. Eric is also dedicated to giving back to the community as reflected in his work with the Hispanic 100's Mentorship Program where he serves as co-chair. About the Hispanic 100 Foundation The Hispanic 100 organization is established to develop and promote leadership from within and from the Hispanic community and to advance free enterprise principles through advocacy and educational activities that impact the Hispanic population as it relates to the overall social and economic good.   Links for This Episode: Hispanic100 eric@focusedldr.com focusedldr.com linkedin.com/in/focusedldr facebook.com/focusedldr Focused_leader   On This Episode You'll Learn: Some of the unique challenges first generation, Hispanic college students face The story of a successful, first generation Hispanic college student What the Hispanic 100 does Why mentoring is so valuable What does it take to give back   Connect with Dr. Mike:  Website: https://www.drmikepatterson.com/ Book: https://www.missionfirstpeoplealwaysbook.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmichaellpatterson/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealdrmikepatterson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/drmikepatterson Buy The Book!: Mission First People Always   Episode Minute By Minute: 0:01 What to expect on today's episode 1:15 Get to know Eric Rodriguez 7:14 Struggles commonly found in young Hispanic communities  19:01 How Eric is helping Hispanic communities get mentored  20:19 One of the most powerful stories about mentorship 23:00 The importance of personality assessments 26:32 The real power of giving to others  33:10 The number one challenge Eric and his organization

A human-centered education approach puts neurodiversity and people's ability to learn differently at the forefront. Our current system is results driven. Human-centered learning evolves learning milestones naturally. “It's not that the conventional approach is wrong. It's that the world has changed. And we need education to do something really different. It's not clear that we can tinker with the factory model enough to have it do what we need,” said Hansen. Technology is intertwined with our current education system. “Technology has always played a role in the education system,” said Rodriguez.Technology, after all, is a tool. “Technology is an extension of human ingenuity. What humans can do – tech accelerates that,” said Rodriguez. Integrating technology into human-centered learning means getting creative about how, where, and when technology is used. Schools have started to implement learning-focused apps that personalize the journey for students. This approach is limiting. “They're trying to personalize within a system that is still very standardized and regimented in what kids need to do, what order they need to do it, how quickly they need to do it,” said Hansen.“A human-centered approach really says that the purpose of education is to help each individual maximize and realize their potential,” said Hansen. It shapes around each individual. It considers the science of how and when deep learning happens. Human-centered learning honors the nuance, diversity, and complexity of human capability. While those qualities sit at the center, the tools and tech allow a person to shape their interests and passions into what the world needs. “Technology is there to meet the needs, the community, and the students where they're at,” said Rodriguez. In the future of education, technology could be used to expose students to new and challenging environments. Virtual reality could introduce students to possible shadowing experiences that wouldn't otherwise be possible. The technology could capture and credit learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting. To learn more about the human-centered learning approach connect with Eric Rodriguez and Ulcca Joshi Hansen on LinkedIn.Subscribe to this channel on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts to hear more from the Intel Network and Edge Solutions Group.

She is the past administrator of the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging and the YWCA Retirement Fund in New York City. She is joined by an esteemed panel of three Pittsburgh-based geriatricians, Dr. Emily Jaffe,  Dr.  Eric Rodriguez and Dr. Judy Black. All three are actively involved with Jewish Healthcare Foundation on Boards, committees and as advisors. Emily Jaffe is the Vice President and Executive Medical Director for Highmark Home and Community Services with clinical expertise in nursing facilities, palliative and hospice care as well as in the home. She is a fellowship trained Geriatrician with board certification in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Jaffe received her medical degree at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and attended the University of Chicago for a Geriatrics Fellowship. Eric Rodriguez is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine's Division of Geriatric Medicine, where his research focuses on Alzheimer's Disease in older adults. He serves as a geriatrics medical consultant at the UPMC Senior Care-Benedum Center at UPMC Montefiore Hospital and his primary expertise is in the care of patients with multiple diseases needing multiple medications, especially those suffering from dementia. Judy Black is a geriatrician who served for 17 years as the Medical Director for Senior Markets at Highmark, Inc., where she helped enhance and coordinate the care of older adults. She presently serves as a Medical Advisor for the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. She also serves as a leader for National POLST, a nonprofit that organizes the use of a standard end-of-life medical tool. Dr. Black is recognized locally and nationally for her advocacy on behalf on the senior population and for improving end of life care. This past year we all experienced a horrific pandemic that took the lives of over 600,000 individuals in our country. And while the daily numbers are declining the cumulative total is beyond any of our imaginations. The pandemic disproportionately affected seniors and those in long-term care facilities.  While only half of 1% of people in this country live in skilled nursing facilities, long-term care accounted for more than 60% of all the deaths. Many families did not see their loved ones in person for over a year. In some families, mom or dad came home to live with them to stay safe. This has been a year when we all questioned what our care models could be doing to assure the safety and wellbeing of the eldest and frailest among us. Telehealth, remote family visits, and remote monitoring became commonplace out of necessity. This episode will explore how high tech can enhance high touch when it comes to caring for our frail seniors, and what we would like to see going forward.
