Make America Healthy Again? Have we ever been healthy? I've been in the health field for thirty-five years. In all that time, I had never heard a news media report on red dyes in food. For the first time, I'm encouraged by the future of our American food system! For me, this is not a political issue. I truly want to give people the same opportunities that I have. I know how to read labels and avoid cancer-causing ingredients in my food. Most people don't. Americans are starting to question our food manufacturers. That's a big first step in eliminating harmful ingredients from food (many of which have been banned in Europe for decades). Today's podcast, with MAHA advocate and activist Kelly Ryerson, made me sad and mad. Kelly (Glyphosate Girl) discussed the damage glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) does to our environment and bodies. Kelly has spent years in the trenches explaining why this chemical is so dangerous to anyone who would listen. It's such an easy default to use a heavy chemical load to kill weeks. Did you know there are simple alternatives to using such a large amount of chemicals in farming? Kelly also explained that while this product is sold in Europe, the company that makes Roundup has created a less toxic alternative for sale in Europe. This, to me, is mind-blowing! My friend Kim loves crime stories from Crime Junkie to Dateline. Me? Not so much. But I enjoy a good, not-too-gory crime story where the bad guy gets it in the end. Since I'm part of a vast cancer community, I hear stories that encourage me and some that make me so upset that I can't sleep. This is one of those stories. In 1898, Pierre and Madam Curie discovered radium. In 1903, Pierre Curie said, "He would not care to be alone with radium in a room as it would burn all the skin off his body, destroy his eyesight, and probably kill him."  In the 1920s, young women (average age 14) were hired to paint radium on watches and clock dials. Radium was fluorescent, so it made the numbers easier to read. However, it was also incredibly toxic and could turn bones into a fragile honeycomb. Fast forward to New Jersey in 1920 to the U.S. Radium Corporation (USRC). The owners and scientists at USRC knew that radium in large amounts was very dangerous. Yet these young girls were told, "After you dip your paintbrush in radium, put the tip in your mouth to make it a finer point before you start painting." When I told my husband how many of these young women died from radium poisoning, he said, "This is murder." Yes, it was murder. But no one went to jail. HELP! Reading labels takes a lot of time, and even with a science degree, I have a hard time figuring out what's good and what's bad. If I'm struggling, I guess you are as well. Food companies must convince you that their product is the best item on the supermarket shelves. Their marketing message is on the front, and the truth is on the back. For example, I picked up a package of high-protein chips at Costco. The front of the package said, "made with the highest quality ingredients." Well, that's great. I flipped the bag over and saw they use canola, sunflower, and safflower oils. These oils are highly inflammatory AND highly processed, NOT GREAT. I hate to say it, but you'll need to assume that most food companies are not going to tell you the truth. It reminds me of that movie with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keeton, Something's Gotta Give. In it, he tells her, "I've always told you some version of the truth," and she responds, "The Truth Doesn't Have Versions!" Unfortunately, there are many versions of the truth in the food world. Studies also show that women who have disrupted sleep (often due to low melatonin levels) have a higher risk of breast cancer. Distance is your friend when it comes to EMF exposure so try to stay away from Wi-Fi routers and cell towers and never put your phone against your body (skin or head!). She also told us about the MRI cell phone study with Dr. Lisa Bailey. She studied women who carried their cells phone in their sports bras. On breast MRI imaging, the women who ended up with breast cancer had tumors that mimicked the pattern of their phones. August suggests we download books and movies and then watch in airplane mode to reduce exposure. techwellness.com   Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy Dr. Connealy is leading a cancer prevention revolution that focuses on treating the patient with the disease and not the disease of the patient while determining the origin of the illness. She is the author of The Cancer Revolution, which has revolutionized the cancer treatment landscape. We had a riveting discussion about the fact that the death rate from cancer hasn't changed in the last 50 years.  I find that statement shocking. Millions of dollars are invested yearly in cancer research; how could it be possible that the death rate from cancer hasn't changed? In her book, Dr. C. cites a Japanese study that found that we have more than 75 million cancer cells in our body at any given time, and usually, our immune system keeps these cells in check. But when the immune system becomes compromised over a long period, these cells can begin to multiply. Dr. C. also shared that there are over 10 RX written for every man, woman, and child in the US. Welcome to 2021! The New Year brings with it a lot of talk about expectations, health, and overhauling our lifestyles and diets with goals, resolutions, and the best of intentions. And, to be honest, I find all of the expectations surrounding the New Year really overwhelming. And if our main goal is a healthy body, mindset, and lifestyle—what does that mean? What does that look like? Over the years, I’ve come to believe that true health varies for each person—and the more we can learn and broaden our understanding of “health,” we can easily begin to apply a wide variety of perspectives, ideas, and teachings to ourselves and our own health journeys. There is no one size fits all answer when it comes to our children’s health, our family’s health, or our own health. I’m really excited for the opportunity to introduce you to Hilda Labrada Gore—someone who has been very influential in my own personal health journey. In fact, her voice and work is such an everyday presence in my life and learning that I realized it’s probably time I shared more about her and her work with you. She’s frequently referred to as “Holistic Hilda,” (which, the idea of holistic is just one more layer in the “what is true health” conversation).
