Witness me, Slackers! This week is a petal to the metal episode. No chit chat, no personal anecdotes from the week, nada - just straight out the gate just like the opening of every Mad Max movie. George Miller knows to keep all that pesky dialogue to a minimum and let the story unfold visually. From the very first installment, Max Rockatansky has been one of the most interesting cinematic characters, in large part because he says so little. Whether Max is played by Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy, so much is expressed via facial expressions and the chaos happening all around him. Paired with some memorable villains, and you get cinematic gold. Speaking of villains, what a list of names: Toecutter. Night Rider. Lord Humongous. Wez. Aunty Entity. Ironbar. And of course, Immortan Joe. They just keep getting more and more over the top as the franchise progressed. And what's truly remarkable is the fact that Max is actually the deuteragonist of Mad Max: Fury Road. That's right, he's the second most important character - the protagonist is one Imperator Furiosa, originally played to perfection by Charlize Theron, and soon to be embodied by Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. I don't know about you, but I am pretty stoked to see another installment in the franchise - Max or no Max!

This week's sequel has us traveling to a dystopian future where a young Mel Gibson (Mad Max) will do just about anything for gasoline. This movie has an all-star cast with Mel Gibson and Vernon Wells. We, of course, talked about Jason Voorhees sorry I mean Lord Humongous, Feral Kid (What the hell was he), us both falling head over heels for Warrior Woman, how insane Vernon Wells is in this movie, and lots more. Mad Max 2 was our highest Rotten Tomatoes score yet at 93%. This is also available to watch in video form (Doug has an epic costume of a Mad Max 2 character) here sequelsonly.com/madmax2 Next up is our last Re-Release before my son, fingers crossed, comes home. This week, Jeff Koyen joins me to dissect George Miller's 2015 apocalyptic action Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth film in the Mad Max film series, following Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (often simply called The Road Warrior) and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Unlike its predecessors, Fury Road was made in a modern, computerized film production landscape. The three original films were scruffy independent productions made in the ‘70s and ‘80s featuring visceral actions with real people doing incredible—and seemingly real—stunts. The decades-later sequel Fury Road miraculously retains the scruffy and kinetic feel and spirit of the original films while taking full advantage of the tools and possibilities of modern movie-making, overlaying a bold sense of color, speed and scale. Fury Road was a singular masterpiece of pure cinema. However, it fizzled at the box office, coming in second to Pitch Perfect 2 on its opening weekend. While Fury Road was embraced by an enthusiastic cult of fans, its impact on filmmaking was sadly negligible. It showed the grand possibilities of CGI filmmaking and the general public said “no thanks” and bought a gazillion tickets for gray Marvel movie sludge instead. Mad Max super-fan Jeff Koyen joins me to celebrate_ Fury Road. Jeff is a brilliant editor and journalist whose career spans the legendary '90s ‘zine _Crank, the iconoclastic alt-weekly_ New York Press _(where he was my boss), the NFT artwork site the Boggz Project (https://boggz.org/)and numerous other publications and projects. It's a great conversation and I don't want to give too much away. But the scene from the original Mad Max with the rumored stunt death is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBCpa_CiWsI) (don't worry–the guy didn't die; he was just walloped by a motorcycle tire real good). Also, someday I'm going to do a full-throated defense of Beyond Thunderdome but I don't really get into it here.

He was able to hit a lot of the top territories including Mid South, WWA, and Southeastern. Despite not having a long run he got a lot out of it. We'll sit down with him and discuss what he thought of his wrestling days and what he's been doing in more recent times. Make sure to be with us as we sit down and talk wrestling with Jeff Van Camp.

Join wrestling superfans Alex Doriot and Travis White as they take their time-traveling hearse the furthest into the past it's ever gone to explore the origins of the man who would become The Phenom as he cuts his teeth in 1989 Memphis Wrestling! Mark Calaway is known here as the Master Of Pain in this footage so rare it's not even owned by the WWE. He's also greener than grass as he learns the ropes inside the squared circle, but it's fascinating to see him develop some of the moves, mannerisms, and intensity that he would go down in history for. It's also absolutely hilarious as we laugh harder than we ever have on the show diving into this old school, non-PC, southern-fried wrasslin' footage! We'll cover the ridiculous misspelling in the opening credits of this special, Master Of Pain's shaky promo delivery and confusing backstory, the ridiculous evolution of his look, his first ever title win, some of the most unfortunately named jobbers you'll ever see, some casual racism and promos that wouldn't fly in 2021, upcoming events at the local "high skoo", garbage bag ring canvasses, tar-and-feather match stipulations, and so much more. Plus we'll discuss the likes of Jerry The King Lawler, Dutch Mantell, Sid Vicious a.k.a. Lord Humongous, Downtown Bruno, Bam Bam Bigelow, P.Y. We are happy to debut the first episode of the “It's A Family Affair” Podcast, the companion piece to the website project of the same name examining Continental Championship Wrestling. And for our first show, it's great to welcome back Karl Stern (@WIWCool) to the show. Not only is Karl a wrestling historian, but an Alabama native who grew up watching Southeastern Wrestling and saw its transition to Continental. In a very wide-ranging discussion, we talk about the transition of the promotion in June 1985, the logistics of the change, why they changed names, format and even announcers, bringing in Gordon Solie to replace longtime host Charlie Platt. We talk about where the promotion was in terms of angles they were running at the time and what they did on the debut show, including bringing in world champion Ric Flair to kick off the first episode. After that, quite frankly, we just all over the place, talking about just about everything related to the company, including their start in Knoxville in 1974, Ron Fuller acquiring the Gulf Coast terrritory and renaming it Southeastern in 1978, the towns they ran and where the TV show was seen in that part of the country. We talk about Ron Fuller's career as a wrestler and promoter, including whether we think buying Knoxville cost him the change of being NWA World Champion . And we discuss just about every name you can think of from this era: Robert Fuller, Jimmy Golden, all of the Armstrongs (Bob, Brad, Scott and Steve), Adrian Street, Rip Rogers, Austin Idol, Tommy and Johnny Rich, the Nightmares (Danny Davis and Ken Wayne), Tom Prichard, Tony Anthony, Jerry Stubbs, The Flame (also known as the Assassin), Roy Lee Welch, Bill Ash, Lord Humongous and more. We also talk about Karl's When It Was Cool website, a wide ranging popular culture site, very akin to our own. We even find time to talk about Southern Basterds, then now missing in action comic set in the part of Alabama Karl knows very well. The goal of the podcast is not only have wrestling journalists and historians on the show, but also the wrestlers were that is possible. Note: You can also hear me on an upcoming episode of Ron Fuller's Super Stud Cast, where I can to ask Ron about the creation of Continental and hear how it happened from the man himself. Be sure to check out the It's A Family Affair section of the website for a look at the Continental television shows and other articles about the promotion. Thanks for your time.

From gun lubrication to Isuzus needing lubricating, and from Auntie Entity to Dilbert, it's GOT to be the Garage Hour.  We know gearhead, and we are geeksauce. This might be one of our best episodes ever, with beer, the Garage Hour goons' advice column, Mitt "Chainsaw" Romney, freefall Red Bull daredevils, lots of good rock and roll, promotions of the upcoming Sasquatch Run and our Oktoberfest drinking session at Maxwell's House of Books.  From there, it's economical cars and foreign cars and performance cars hybrid cars, upon which we heap mountains of disdain and encouragement and some bad FIAT jokes and even worse Russian accents.  It all ends with great discussions of racing at Bathurst in Australia (Supercar = awesomesauce) and some pity for the wreckage of Michael Schumacher's F1 career. There's also a massive Villains' Cage Match discussion, with Lord Humongous of Road Warrior fame versus Khan Noonien Singh from Star Trek's "Wrath of Khan", plus a revisitation of previous battles and some unfinished villain business.
