Clare joins Hannah Engelkamp and her donkey, Chico, for a ramble in the Dyfi Valley a few miles east of Machynlleth in Powys. On the way Hannah tells Clare about the extraordinary adventure she shared with Chico when they walked 1000 miles around the perimeter of Wales. She did this despite having no previous experience of donkeys, or horses, or any animals really. It took twice as long as she intended and was much harder than she ever imagined. The idea of 'carrot or stick' doesn't work, Hannah says, so the first thing she learned was when a donkey stops you just have to wait and stand and look and wait until the moment seems right to move off again. Hannah also tells Clare about her involvement with 'Slow Ways'. It's a Community Interest Company whose aim is to map, improve, and promote walking routes between Britain's towns, cities and villages. Clare and Hannah met at Grid Ref: SH 850 027, and walked a section of a Slow Way known as ‘Maccar One' near Chico's home at Dyfi Donkey Woods. Maccar One is 23 miles long and connects Machynlleth with Carno. Slow Ways are named for the first three letters of the place at either end of a route e.g. Mac for Machynlleth and Car for Carno.Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen Gregor

Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith

Hot off the presses - it's Margaret's conversation with Angela Barnes earlier this week.  Angela shares some of Margaret's worst crush excesses.  Beardy nerds?  Check.  Comedians from the 1990s?  Oh yes.  Angela's crushes include Kenny Everett (note for anyone born after 1979 - he was a very funny, very gay, very rude primetime ITV family entertainer.  The 80s was a different time).  George Michael gets a mention, as do John Lennon, and a man who once pissed her off so badly she filled his bed with Frosties while he was on a date with someone else. It's a crushed-packed 55 minutes, that's what we're saying. Don't forget to come and join the cult Substack - we post about one thing a week, so you won't be bombarded, and it gives us another way of keeping in touch if Twitter ends up in the bin.  It's looking quite likely isn't it? https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/ Quick reminder of our live gig at Machynlleth on 30th April 2023 - we would love to see you there.  We got some badges made, and if that won't persuade you to make the journey to North Wales, I don't know what will.  Our guest Eleanor Morton, maybe?  She's great, and we're very excited about finding out what her crush history is like.  Tickets available here: https://machcomedyfest.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873644691 That's all the admin for this week. Til next time,  Team Crushed xx

The five-year-old had been missing for 36 hours – she’d vanished while playing outside her home in the rural welsh town of Machynlleth. The entire community came together to help the police search for the missing girl. There was a real hope that April would be found alive. But the search would be in vain… A local 46-year-old man named Mark Bridger, who was known to the family, had abducted and murdered April. Clare Balding goes rambling, near Machynlleth, with the writer and environmentalist, George Monbiot. The theme of this series of Ramblings is 'In Search Of.' and, together, George and Clare are walking in search of wildness. George's new book, 'Feral', is partly a personal story about his attempt to stave off the monochrome nature of modern-day life: "I could not continue just sitting and writing, looking after my daughter and my house, running merely to stay fit, watching the seasons cycling past without ever quite belonging to them. I was, I believed, ecologically bored". In this walk, George explains how he has attempted to 'rewild' his own life and describes what he believes needs to be done in order to reintroduce true wildness to our countryside through the large-scale restoration of ecosystems. He says "researching it felt like stepping through the back of the wardrobe". Using OS Explorer OL23 - Cadair Idris and Llyn Tegid - George takes Clare to his favourite place in mid-Wales, a rare stand of ancient native woodland, which stirs him to his very soul. Produced by Karen Gregor. First broadcast on Thursday 6 June, 2013.

Ffoton Interviews / Cyfweliadau - ffoton

Photographer Pete Davis first wielded a camera when he was eleven years old and has since gone on to hone his craft by being an advertising and fashion photographer and was a senior lecturer in documentary photography at the University of Wales, Newport for eighteen years - nine of which he was the course leader. Known for his large format landscape documentary photography both here in Wales and abroad, the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth staged a major retrospective exhibition of Pete's photography in 2017 featuring work from across sixty years. Ffoton are delighted to have recorded Pete in conversation with Geoff Young - co-curator at Ffotogaleri y Gofeb in Machynlleth in March 2109 where Pete’s work was part of a group landscape exhibition alongside work by John Blakemore, Peter Cattrell, Marian Delyth and Aled Rhys Hughes. This conversation was recorded following a morning event where the photographers gave a public talk at the gallery.

RHLSTP (EATMCF) #3: Jessica Fostekew and Holly Burn - Michael Sheen's Mildly Nutritious Hand. Rich has just had the biggest gig of his career and now he's in a Tabernacle somewhere in Wales, but that's showbiz. At least he has met and very slightly affected the life of a man he loves. Two guests packed into the regulation hour here, with ex-zombie Jessica Fostekew and delightfully bonkers Holly Burn ramping up the laughs at this lunchtime gig. Jessica has been in a fight at the festival and recounts tales of time holes, Nightmare Live, a great new TV format, and sharing train rides with a stalker (of other people). Holly tells tales of being the world's worst bridesmaid, finding your inner clown, what happens when Posh Spice retweets you, and her plans to visit her namesake. Plus Rich demonstrates why you should never tell comedians what to do, and discusses truth in comedy. RHLSTP (BATMCF) Special! - it's like the Leicester Square Theatre Podcast but it's at the Machynlleth Comedy Festival in Wales and is at the packed Y Tabernacle. It's the first podcast since the show was nominated for a prestigious Sony so the pressure is on to keep the fellatio and bumming jokes to the highest standard. And the guests are rising stars and rival non-Sony award nominated podcasters Pappy's (all they've got is a new TV series, the losers). There's plenty of charity human centipede fun to be had with Huge Ackman, bleeding heads, Animal Antics, public nudity and the ham hand question is nearly destroyed, but becomes stronger. There's a half-hearted attempt to put a shrek in it which shows that boat has sailed and too much self-pity. But it doesn't matter, it's not a proper London one! The change in format is here! I'm joined by Pieter Collier from the Tolkien Library to discuss news and views about all things Tolkien: Literature, Art, Film, Festivals, and more. We're sure that Pieter will become a regular part of Middle-earth Minutes, and are certain that you will enjoy the news that we have brought you... some of which is being heard here for the very 1st time.Legend of Sigurd Audio Book Delayed:All those who had pre-ordered the Audio CD were expecting to be listening to it by now. Find out why it is not yet available according to the publisher. But, Harper Collins has some news that is being reported here for the 1st time...Never-Before Published Hobbit Painting By Alan Lee:When asked about what else we could expect the answer came back that "the Alan Lee illustrated Hobbit hardback is getting a much deserved reprint with a slightly different cover, which includes a brand new never-before published Hobbit painting by Alan Lee."We took the opportunity of that good news to discuss Alan Lee and the interview that Pieter conducted with him in March, 2008.The Edel Silmarillion Student Project:Further discussion with David Brawn at Harper Collins turned to the Edel Silmarillion, a student project produced by the very talented Benjamin Harff, which was featured on the Tolkien Library. Harper Collins says that The Benjamin Harff Silmarillion "has not been considered commercially". We encourage all Tolkien fans everywhere to take a look at this book, and send a friendly email to both the Tolkien Estate and Harper Collins asking that this book be published so that we may all have a copy. You can email both by visiting Tolkienestate.com/contact, and perhaps, with enough letters from eager fans, we can persuade Harper Collins to release this beautiful book.Tolkien Settlement: More Than $100 Million:THR, Esq. reports on the resolution of the litigation between New Line Cinema and the estate of author J.R.R. Tolkien, and we offer our own comments as well as those of Christopher Tolkien (“The Trustees acknowledge that New Line may now proceed with its proposed films of ‘The Hobbit.’”) and Peter Jackson who says that they're "not even greenlit yet", and suggests that we "drop Warner Bros. a line and encourage them to be kind to [the film makers]".Also, according to High-Def Digest New Line/Warner has delayed The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Blu-ray.Oxonmoot 2009:Oxonmoot 2009 will take place at Lady Margaret Hall from September 25th to 27th. Advanced booking has now closed but you can still attend Oxonmoot and pay at the door. For more information, visit the Oxonmoot website. And lastly, according to Pieter...Festival In The Shire:Next year there will be organized a completely new Tolkien event, namely "Festival in the shire - A celebration of all things Tolkien inspired".It will be held from August 13th -15th, 2010 at Y Plas Machynlleth, Wales, United Kingdom. The town of Machynlleth is located on the edge of beautiful Snowdonia National Park and is the historic capital of Wales. There is not much known about this event yet, but it promises to be great! I have heard rumors that Ted Nasmith (the Tolkien artist), Jane Chance (the author of many Tolkien related books and articles) and John Garth (author of Tolkien and the Great War) and Tom Shippey (probably the greatest Tolkien scholar alive) are confirmed to be participating/attending. This event will be combining a Tolkien conference with an exhibition of Tolkien-related books, art, memorabilia and other fantasy items. The three-day event will feature food, music and entertainment. There is no website yet but I have been told it will be going live shortly.Tolkien fans that wish to provide input on the program planning and events related to Festival of the Shire are encouraged to do so.
