Construction of the Virginia headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense began on September 11th, 1941 - spookily, the same date it was attacked by al-Qaeda six decades later.  The massive five-sided building, a potent symbol of America's military strength, became known as the Pentagon. Featuring 4 million square feet of office space, the building was designed by George Bergstrom under the supervision of Leslie R. Groves, who was later chosen to head the Manhattan Project and build the atomic bomb. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca, and Olly explain why the building's racially segregated bathrooms were installed, but never used; reveal why, for a while, a ‘Pentagon project' became a by-word for a white elephant; and consider whether a hot dog stand in the complex foxed the Soviets…  Further Reading: ‘10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About the Pentagon' (U.S. Department of Defense, 2019): https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/story/Article/1650913/10-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-the-pentagon/ ‘Pentagon Hot Dog Stand – Arlington, Virginia' (Atlas Obscura, 2017): https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/pentagon-hot-dog-stand • ‘FOX Business reveals 'stunning' new details about Pentagon's construction' (FOX Business, 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tK6gIsMAgc #US #WW2 #Architecture  Love the show? Change Your Mindset

“Everyone should be involved in developing solutions to customer problems.” Peter Margaritis The traditional hierarchy organizational structure has been around since the 1950s, and so have many of the strategies developed to make it work well. As time goes on though, some of these strategies are becoming less effective, while others are simply out of date.  A flat organization is a company that does not operate on strict hierarchies like most traditional businesses. In these companies, decisions are made at the operational level rather than from senior executives who have little contact with employees at work sites. One thing about flat organizations is that not all companies can be flat because not every business model is suited to a flat structure. However, if your company isn't in a tightly structured industry, using a flatter organization can help you become more agile and responsive to reducing hierarchy-related costs. Most companies have tried experimenting with flat organizational structures, but few have mastered it. Yet some organizations are very successful in doing so. They have implemented policies and protocols that allow them to maintain a happy employee base while producing outstanding results The last few years have seen an increase in companies pushing towards flatter organizational structures. The 10 elements of a flat organization include 1.      There are no strict hierarchy layers. 2.      Everyone is responsible for what everyone does. 3.      Each employee's opinion matters, regardless of rank or seniority. 4.      Decisions are made as close to customers as possible. 5.      One size fits all. (Is it a good approach?) 6.      Teams across geographies come together regularly if not daily. 7.       Employees can take their leave whenever they want and are encouraged to do so. 8.      Employees are encouraged to use their initiative and not to feel micromanaged. 9.      Employees wear many hats. 10.  Collaboration and teamwork are emphasized within functional areas Ego and office politics kill successful collaboration but in a flat organization, these hierarchy collaboration killers rarely exist, and if they do, they're immediately addressed. Collaboration is one of the underlying principles in improv leadership. To achieve a successful partnership, there must be a foundation of respect for the other party. Each party should be trustworthy and supportive of the team. If any of these three foundations are missing, collaboration ceases to exist. Flat organizational structures are not for every organization, however, your organization can adopt a flattish approach and become nimbler by distributing the power and authority to others to make decisions without your approval.  Learn more about your ad choices. In school, we are taught – well, some of us are taught – that there are 11 major organ systems in the human body. They include the circulatory, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, and digestive systems.   But did you know you also have an endocannabinoid system (ECS)? Unless you are a research scientist or work with medical cannabis, I'm guessing probably not. And yet, the ECS has been called “the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health.”   So, what Is the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)?   Unlike many of the other systems in the human body, you can't point to one area or layer of the body and say “that's the Endocannabinoid system.” It's made up of receptors that are found throughout your body. The two primary receptors that we know about are CB1 and CB2, but we're still learning more about this system.   What exactly does the endocannabinoid system do?   Tyler Strauss, an activist for the benefits of cannabis and cannabinoids, wrote a  great article on this subject titled “7 Things You Probably Didn't Know About The Endocannabinoid System.”   He writes, “ECS helps fine-tune most of our vital physiological functions. It promotes homeostasis affecting everything from sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation, memory, mood, and even reproduction. So, in basic terms, the ECS helps modulate the regulation of homeostasis across all major body systems ensuring that all systems work in concert with one another.”   Why is homeostasis this important?   Scientific American says, “Homeostasis, from the Greek words for "same" and "steady," refers to any process that living things use to actively maintain fairly stable conditions necessary for survival.   “The term was coined in 1930 by the physician Walter Cannon. His book, The Wisdom of the Body, describes how the human body maintains steady levels of temperature and other vital conditions such as the water, salt, sugar, protein, fat, calcium and oxygen contents of the blood. Similar processes dynamically maintain steady-state conditions in the Earth's environment.”   Which metabolic processes does the ECS help regulate?   Dr. Sunil Aggarwal pointed out during the Cannabis Health Summit that ECS plays a role in processes such as:   Mood regulation Appetite Memory Inflammation Pain perception Muscle tone and movement Extinction of traumatic memory Protection of nerves and rain tissue Bone growth Tumor regulation Baby breast-feeding reward Stress management Eye pressure Gastrointestinal motility Seizure activity   But there's one place in your body where you don't have CB receptors – your brain stem – which is why it's impossible to have a lethal overdose on cannabis.   --     Resources: Learn more at www.doctorselassie.com (& get a FREE 15-minute consultation!) Andy Beeker is watching Office Space. This episode is not sponsored! Want to be a sponsor? You can contact me or check out my sponsorship gig on Fiverr This episode is different than a normal episode of Cross Cutting Concerns! This episode is about an R-Rated movie! Normally my podcast is G-rated, but that is not the case for this episode. If you normally listen with children, I recommend you listen to Story Pirates with them instead! This is a long episode: almost an hour. Normally my episodes are around 15 minutes. This is an episode about a (vaguely) technical/computer related movie. I’ve done a couple of episodes like this in the past: 071 - Bill Sempf on Sneakers and 036 - Kevin Groves on Pirates of Silicon Valley. Show Notes: We watched Office Space, a 1999 film by Mike Judge. If you haven’t watched it, you should! Inside joke alert: the mention of a "white jimmy". This is a reference to a GMC Jimmy SUV that’s painted white. But suppose someone came up to you and said "I have a white Jimmy" and then paused for 15 seconds… There are many tangents we go on in this episode. Confused? Send me a question, and I will try to clarify. K*Pax - a film you’ve probably never heard of starring Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, and (notable for this podcast) Ajay Naidu. Speaking of Kevin Spacey, if you’re out of the loop, you might want to read up on Anthony Rapp. The video discussed briefly in the episode is 7 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Office Space Adult Swim is the late night block of Cartoon Network that showed King of the Hill in syndication. Be sure to check out the Office Space soundtrack. Speaking of the "year 2000 switch", check out episode 100 - with Joe Kelly on COBOL. We mentioned Tiger LCD games. Here’s a refresher if you don’t quite remember them. Bob Dole: The Bus Tour What movie should I tackle next time? Leave some feedback and let me know! Want to be on the next episode? You can!
