This week Ian Truscott stops by the Marketing Studio to join Rockstar CMO Strategy Advisor and former Forrester Research Director Jeff Clark as he shares seven steps for conducting a marketing capability gap analysis. Ian then goes backstage with Riaz Kanani, the Founder and CEO of Radiate B2B who, as you'll hear, has a habit and track record of building and scaling successful businesses, including creating one of the world's largest video advertising networks and as DigitalOxygen building data-centric marketing campaigns before being acquired by Silverpop, a leader in B2B marketing automation, which he scaled internationally, positioning it for acquisition by IBM. Riaz has sat on the DMA email marketing council, has appeared on the BBC, was nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019 and was recognised in the Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech, and now he's on Rockstar CMO FM! Ian and Riaz discuss the challenges of B2B lead generation, the dark funnel, the opportunity for mid-market technology vendors, and his fascination with what we throw into the Rockstar CMO Swimming Pool. Finally, Ian grabs a cocktail in the Rockstar CMO virtual bar with Robert Rose, Chief Troublemaker at The Content Advisory, who, over an unnamed cocktail (CEX in Cleveland?), he wonders if B2B marketing is becoming a bit inadvertently indifferent. The overturning of Roe v. Wade is a watershed moment for the privacy of people seeking reproductive care. A person's browser history, search history, location and private messages can be used by law enforcement or private citizens to pursue people who are suspected of having or aiding an abortion. When people's most private digital information can be used against them, can tech companies change their practices to better protect their users' privacy? As some states try to outlaw websites that tell people how to access abortion care, can advocates ensure that reliable health information remains online? In this episode, you will hear from Alexandra Givens, President and CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT); Cecile Richards, former President of Planned Parenthood; and Nabiha Syed, President of The Markup, as they discuss ways advocates are working to protect users' privacy and access to information at this critical moment for reproductive rights.

Survival keynote by Dr. Nabiha Saklayen, CEO of Cellino Biotech.
في الثمانين من عمرها وما زالت تعمل أربع عشرة ساعة في اليوم تزرع وتحصد وتطبخ وتستقبل زبائنها في مطعم Nabiha's Kitchen في Wagga Wagga.
This episode was supposed to be a casual interview. Oh, well. In any case, it's as the title states: There's 70 Questions and there's Nabiha Nuha alongside us.
Nabiha Syed is the President of The Markup. Just what is The Markup, you ask? If this is your introduction to The Markup, we stand as both disheartened that you’re not already a regular reader, yet delighted that we may serve as your guide by way of this week’s show. The Markup, an investigative journalism startup that explores how powerful actors use technology to reshape society, which, if you’ve never explored the pages of the publication, might sound like a bite far too big for any publication to take. And yet, what we hope you discover in our conversation this week, this approach is not only a standard readily achievable, but with the right tools and an eager team, it can serve as a standard bearer for other institutions of the fourth estate to follow. It turns out that beyond the top notch journalistic chops, central to The Markup’s DNA is a dedication to developing and releasing the same data analytics investigative tools used by their reporters. This transparency in the process allows the publication to report news that is, as Syed calls it, “bulletproof.” And you can get in on the action. Take Blacklight, for example. This Markup service asks you to input any website address you frequent and will report back the user-tracking technologies at work on that site that are accessing information about you through your computer and your behavior while using it. Why would they need such a tool at the news site? Because data — and how it moves through our economy — is part of the central story of the anthropocene. The Markup has invested as heavily in technology tools and journalists as it has in traditional journalism and the results show in every story. That’s why we’re so lucky to have Nabiha Syed on the show this week. We talk about what it means to exist in the journalism space, and about building a news organization bespoke for us, our modern age, and dedicated to the modern information perils that stand before us. Links & NotesThe Markup‘The High Privacy Cost of a “Free” Website’ by Aaron Sankin and Surya Mattu — The MarkupBlacklight — The Markup Follow Nabiha on Twitter Connect with Nabiha on LinkedIn About Nabiha SyedPreviously, she was Vice President and Associate General Counsel at BuzzFeed. As the company’s first newsroom lawyer, she oversaw litigation, including the “Steele Dossier” litigation, as well as select intellectual property, security, international, and cross-company strategic initiatives. Nabiha has been described as “one of the best emerging free speech lawyers” by Forbes magazine. Before BuzzFeed, Nabiha was an associate at Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, a leading media law firm, and the First Amendment Fellow at The New York Times. She has worked on legal access issues at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; represented asylum-seekers in south Texas; counseled on whether to publish hacked materials; and spoken about misinformation at the inaugural Obama Foundation Summit. For her work, Nabiha was named a “40 Under 40 Rising Star” by the New York Law Journal in 2016, a finalist for the Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award from the International Bar Association in 2017, and received an inaugural Reporter’s Committee for the Freedom of the Press award in 2018. She holds a law degree from Yale Law School and from Balliol College, Oxford University, which she attended as a Marshall Scholar.
What does freedom of speech look like in the digital age? We had an in-depth conversation with Nabiha Syed, president of The Markup, a nonprofit data-driven publication. Before joining The Markup, Nabiha Syed was Vice President and Associate General Counsel at BuzzFeed and the company's first newsroom lawyer. Under her leadership, the company successfully defended against libel litigation arising out of the publication of the Steele dossier and initiated numerous notable access litigations. Prior to BuzzFeed, Syed co-founded the nation's first media access law clinic, currently in its 10th year of operation at Yale Law School, and served as a First Amendment Fellow at The New York Times. Nabiha has been described as “one of the best emerging free speech lawyers” by Forbes magazine, and a “real reporter's lawyer” by the Reporter's Committee for the Freedom of the Press, which recognized her with an inaugural award in 2018. She is a non-resident fellow of both Stanford Law School and Yale Law School. Perhaps most importantly, she isa lifelong Girl Scout.

Real Talk about Fake News | Nabiha Syed in conversation with Claire Wardle and Joan Donovan: "Fake news” isn't exactly new: Tabloids have long hawked alien baby photos and Elvis sightings. Many have thus argued that fake news—propaganda, misinformation, and conspiracy theories—have always existed, and therefore requires no new consideration. When we agonize over the fake news phenomenon, though, we are not talking about these kinds of fabricated stories. What we are really focusing on is why we have been suddenly inundated by false information—purposefully deployed—that spreads so quickly and persuades so effectively. This is a different conception of fake news, and it presents a question about how information operates at scale in the internet era. In this Databite talk, Nabiha Syed explores how existing First Amendment theories fail to adequately explain our digital information economy, and how that theoretical incoherence leaves users and social media platforms ill-equipped to deal with “fake news” and other “bad” speech online. Nabiha also offers several factors to be considered in any systemic theory that can help move us beyond the troubled status quo.
