392. Opening Doors to the Outdoors: Inclusivity in Climbing

Access to the outdoors is a basic human need—from the granite under our feet during adventures or simply a breath of fresh air. Yet, that access isn't equal. In the U.S., more than one in three people lack access to a park within a 10-minute walk of home, disproportionately affecting Black and Brown communities. The outdoor and climbing industries face similar challenges. Lack of diversity in leadership, limited funding, and gate-kept information make the climb steeper for many. However, climbers of color have risen to become some of the sport's most accomplished athletes, demonstrating the potential that comes with overcoming barriers. By expanding diversity in leadership, increasing funding, and fostering open access to knowledge, we can create a more inclusive and level playing field for all climbers. Join Trust for Public Land for an inspiring conversation with prominent Asian American climbers Cody Kaemmerlen, Kathy Karlo, and Nina Williams. Moderated by Trust for Public Land's Northwest Director, Mitsu Iwasaki, panelists will delve into their personal journeys, discuss obstacles to equitable access to the sport, and explore the benefits of creating a more inclusive environment for everyone. Cody Kaemmerlen is a passionate rock climber and advocate for inclusivity in the climbing community as well as the outdoors. He is the Director of Advancement Operations for NOLS and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Alpine Club. Based in Wyoming, Cody leads efforts to create welcoming and equitable spaces in the outdoors by addressing barriers to diversity and inclusion. With personal experiences as a South Korean adoptee raised in rural Oregon, he brings a unique perspective to his work. Cody's commitment to equity is also highlighted in the film “Dear Mother,” where he delves into his identity and the challenges faced by people of color in the climbing world. Kathy Karlo is a storyteller at heart who has dedicated herself to reshaping the narrative around climbing and the outdoors. As the creator and host of the For the Love of Climbing podcast, she dives into the emotional and vulnerable sides of the sport, while also amplifying the voices of those often left out of the conversation. Kathy also leads as Executive Director of No Man's Land Film Festival, an all-women adventure film festival that challenges traditional narratives by showcasing female-driven stories. Through her work, Kathy strives to create a more inclusive outdoor space where everyone can feel empowered to share their authentic experiences. Nina Williams is a professional rock climber recognized for her groundbreaking achievements in highball bouldering and trad climbing. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Nina has pushed the limits of what is possible, becoming the first woman to climb iconic routes like “Too Big to Flail” and “Ambrosia” in Bishop, California. Her climbing career is marked by a deep mental discipline, and she is passionate about access and mentorship in the climbing world. Beyond her personal accomplishments, Nina is committed to fostering inclusivity in outdoor spaces, working with organizations like Flash Foxy, Color the Crag, and the Women's Climbing Symposium to ensure everyone can connect with nature. As Board President of the American Alpine Club and a Certified Professional Coach, Nina's work reflects her belief in the power of the outdoors to inspire and uplift all communities. Mitsu Iwasaki, our moderator for the evening, is the Associate Vice President and Northwest Director of Trust for Public Land. Born in Japan, Iwasaki's family immigrated to Seattle, WA soon after he turned six years old. Growing up in the relative comfort of the suburbs, his parents felt it would be best to ‘build his character' by sending him to work on a commercial fishing boat throughout his teenage summers in Chignik, Alaska. Those experiences sparked an enduring love for wild places, inspiring a life-long journey of adventure and exploration of both natural landscapes and his capacity as a person. He has been climbing, skiing, and running across our beloved northwest mountains and around the world for over three decades. Presented by Town Hall Seattle and Trust for Public Land.

Edna Lewis might be the most important American chef ever and few people knew her like her niece, Nina Williams-Mbengue. Nina was just 12 years old when she helped her Aunt Edna by typing up the notes for Edna's landmark cookbook, A Taste of Country Cooking. The 1976 book inspired the farm-to-table movement of later years, codified the classics of Southern cuisine, and documented the foodways of Freetown, Virginia, the settlement founded by Edna's grandfather and other individuals who had been freed from chattel slavery. Nina shares what her aunt was really like, her memories of summers spent in Freetown, and what Edna would think of the legacy she left behind. Nina Williams: White-Passing Ever wonder what it's like to send a 55ft boulder… with no rope? My next guest would know. Epic high-baller, aspiring trad climber, and overall badass lady crusher Nina Williams has quite the climbing resume these days. One of the top female climbers in the country, Nina is one the few females to send V13, has stood on the podium at national competitions, and knows how to put down some serious outdoor sends. Perhaps most known for her high-ball ascents of boulders over 10 times her 5'3 height, this girl knows intimately well what it means to face fear, dial in, and execute. In this episode of Sends and Suffers, we go deep into race and privilege in the climbing community and how the BLM and social movements have carried over to the gym and the crag. Half Chinese, half white, Nina is what she dubs, “white-passing” and knows of the struggles minority athletes face. We get into the challenge of keeping the momentum of these movements alive and the difficult but necessary task of taking on that pain and the responsibility of our part in this “new normal” - yeah, it's hard. But we've gotta keep talking about it. We also talk mental game, coaching, and leadership. Nina tells the story of her path from a young competition climber to sending V11 highballs in Bishop, including a vulnerable yet pivot moment that shaped her mindset as a young climber. When she's not crushing or coaching, Nina somehow also manages to balance earning a degree in Communication & Leadership Management. Not gonna lie, this woman is seriously inspiring. 2020 has been a suffer fest of its own, but this girl has goals going into what is hopefully a better year for everyone. Did someone say big wall? Spoiler alert - Nina openly admits to loving trad. You heard it here, kids. We hit it all in this one. Hope you guys like it. On Episode 166 of the Enormocast, fan-favorite James Lucas returns! The intervening years since James’ most recent previous show and first appearance on the Enormocast have sobered the pie-baking-dirtbag into a contributing member of society. Now in Boulder at Climbing Magazine and happily dating pro-climber Nina Williams, our former redpoint-soloist and reluctant spokes-person for the … Continue reading "Episode 166: James Lucas – A Recipe for Success."

The top of Ariana after their first trip up the Diamond. "We didn’t send. Nina went back and fired it a week or so later. I did Turning Point the night after we talked," according to James. Episode one, touch down. On Thunderpod's inaugural episode, we speak with Nina Williams and James Lucas, Fidi and I in a living room in Denver, Nina and James sharing a couch in Boulder. It's pretty romantic. Nina and James charted entirely different trajectories through the climbing world. James lived out of a broke down Saturn wagon for about 200 years, cutting his teeth and putting up new routes in Yosemite. Nina came up through the comp scene but soon broke out on her own, ticking off some of the scariest, hardest highball boulder problems in the nation. But, as you'll hear, transition is the name of the game for this duo. James blew up the Saturn with a detonator and sixteen sticks of dynamite and slid behind the desk at Climbing Magazine. He has a toilet. He has a closet. He no longer must pee into a Gatorade bottle. And he's one of the most interesting and engaging climbing writers scribbling for coin. He's also allowed his rack to take a back seat to a crashpad, recently spending a ton of time honing his skills as a boulderer. Nina, hunting for something meaningful and sustaining, headed back to school. She also pumped the brakes on those sweat-inducing, leg-snapping, possibly career ending highballs in favor of allowing her intuition to guide her through the climbing universe. She's picking up a trad rack more often, becoming more intimate with the national climbing community, and basically blossoming into one of the most impressive and thoughtful ambassadors that our sport has. We talk about all that good stuff and more, including James's soloing fall (and it's aftermath) in Joshua Tree, a wee bit of politics, how James and Nina met, how the hell Nina manages her fear on highballs like Ambrosia out in Bishop, micro-penises, and a tiny toe dip into "Free Solo." As mentioned during the pod, here are some interviews with Nina and James from other podcasts. You should listen to them, too. Nina on Training Beta here and Basecamp here and The Enormocast here. James on The Enormocast here, here, and here. Finally, thank you to Ryne Doughty for the rad music! Check him out...or become a musical pariah...here! Notes: Originally recorded in early October, 2018. James, to my knowledge, has never fiddled around with dynamite.
