Join Dr. Rak and Po as they sit down with longevity expert and Ironman triathlete Scott Fulton, who offers a fresh and inspiring perspective on aging. Together, they explore how we can confront aging challenges early, adopting a proactive stance that contrasts with society's fear-driven anti-aging narrative. Scott champions the idea of embracing aging as a rewarding phase of life, underscoring the importance of investing in physical, mental, and social well-being—and the vital role curiosity and connection play in a fulfilling life as we grow older. The discussion also takes a critical look at Western ideologies around aging, contrasting them with communal traditions that view aging as a natural and celebrated process. Reflecting on the impact of industrialization and suburbanization, Dr. Rak, Po, and Scott emphasize the need to rebuild intergenerational support systems by learning from cultures that prioritize strong family bonds and community ties. The episode concludes with a look at Scott's concept of "Wealthspan," an approach that integrates health and wealth to redefine successful aging. Scott shares his own story of transformation from a sedentary lifestyle to competing in Ironman races at 47, challenging stereotypes around aging and athleticism. Together, they unpack the importance of career transitions, financial responsibility, and the impact of technology on cognitive health, encouraging listeners to engage in proactive planning and meaningful conversations around aging and end-of-life considerations. The new year kicks off at a leisurely pace for The Tip Sheet with a relatively no-nonsense holiday period for the code. Sixties, Forty20 and Clint get back to work as the preseason resumes and the run towards Round 1 (and 0) begins in earnest. An ACL injury to young talent Richard Penisini headlines the Parramatta news. He will miss the 2024 season as a result and the boys look at how that will shape his future. Jarome Luai is officially a Tiger while Scott Fulton has lost his stripes as the joint-venture continue to overhaul their roster on and off the field. Up at Brisbane, Selwyn Cobbo is flagging a move to the centres - is that the best thing for both player and club? Round Zero and the big double header at Vegas is getting closer and closer and the show tackles some of the issues that will face the NRL as they look to win over the American audience.

All Home Care Matters is honored to welcome Scott Fulton as guest to the show. Scott is the President of Home Ideations LLC, President of the National Aging In Place Council (NAIPC), and Member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Scott's engineering and research career scraped the underbelly of industries, tickled the vast expanse of science and innovation, and tangoed between corporate and entrepreneurship. Today, Scott teaches Longevity at the Universities of Virginia and Delaware campuses. He's a podcast host and co-author of 3 books. WHEALTHSPAN is next, due out in late 2023. The LIVABILITY PROJECT is a model home Scott designed and built for 21st-century longevity living with his wife Cindy. Regarded by many as an innovative and pragmatic thought leader in the aging space, Scott says he mostly just wants to help us all be better informed and ask better questions.
Scott Fulton, President of Home Ideations and The National Aging in Place Council®, is on a mission to improve the way people age. He shares his vision of aging well, which includes nutrition, exercise, connection, and community. About Scott Scott Fulton is a recognized health and longevity thought leader, celebrated for his pragmatic, systems approach to solving big challenges. He wears multiple hats as an accomplished business leader, adult educator, design consultant, and keynote speaker. Scott also serves on numerous community, national, and corporate Boards. Driven by his dedicated mission to enhance public health and overall well-being, Scott serves as President of The National Aging in Place Council and is a proud member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. In his role as President of Home Ideations, Scott guides consumers and corporate clients to see opportunities in designing better solutions for tomorrow's longevity needs. Notably, he recently designed and built a forward-looking home for his family that he calls the Livability Project, with functional design features for today's longevity adults. A respected author, Scott has co-authored influential works such as "Eldercare 101," "Aging in Place Conversations," and "Longevity Lifestyle by Design." His latest project, "WHEALTHSPAN," is poised for release in late 2023. As a co-host on "The Tattered Capes Podcast," Scott passionately shares his mission to foster awareness about the opportunities associated with aging, longevity, and the capacity to optimize for healthy and fulfilling lives. Beyond his intellectual pursuits, Scott is a multisport athlete, competing in numerous triathlon events, including two Ironmans. Key Takeaways The community of the future adopts the best of senior living and aging in place and provides new ways of building connections. Lifestyle communities are more than a building—they create a lifestyle that is consistent with where you have been and where you are trying to go. The loneliest you can be is around a group of people where you don't belong. Hospitalization brings a host of negative health consequences, increasing the risk of dementia by 50%, a 30% increased risk of heart and stroke, and up to a four times higher risk of death. Nutrition and exercise are the cornerstones of health. There is no way to be healthy without daily movement, ideally 150 minutes of moderate intensity a week that gets the heart up. The pandemic brought more options to successfully age in place, including telemedicine and options for food delivery and home maintenance.
Well, it's happened again - the Wests Tigers have parted ways with another coach, this time Premiership winner Tim Sheens. Just one year into a five-year plan that was supposed to see Sheens hold on to the head coaching role for 2023 and 2024, the veteran coach has told the Wests Tigers administration that he's had enough. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes and Steve Stretton take a look at the decision to allow Tim Sheens to depart. Some of the key issues looked at include: Has the departure of Sheens been on the cards since Scott Fulton was appointed? Is this another failing of the Wests Tigers board? Should Justin Pascoe and Lee Hagipantelis take responsibility? Is this just another example of the dysfunction that seems to plague our club? Joel and Steve also look at the pressure this move might place on rookie coach Benji Marshall in 2024 and beyond. It was another interesting day in Wests Tigers land, we hope you enjoy our analysis of the Tim Sheens departure.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wests Tigers continue to splutter and stutter from one crisis to the next - and this coming week looks no different. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Steve Stretton for an update on our own petition calling for a thorough external review of the Wests Tigers administration. We thank everyone who has signed that petition and left their comments too - it is both very humbling to see the support, but also an eye-opener regarding just how much frustration and even anger there appears to be in the fan base. If you haven't done so yet, please sign the petition which can be found by following this link. The boys also take a look at what might be unfolding at Concord right now with an emergency meeting being held today to discuss the ongoing issues between Benji Marshall and Scott Fulton (interestingly, Tim Sheens was not invited). Is someone going to be making an exit from the club? What is going to be the circuit breaker here? Eddie and Steve have their say on that. Further to those issues, the boys also take a look at what these ongoing issues could mean not just for future recruitment, but also our current playing squad. There's also a look back at yet another loss, this time the Wests Tigers performance on Friday night against the Newcastle Knights. Steve and Eddie are honest, and fairly angry too, please don't miss this latest edition of the pod! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome to the Sunday edition of the Footy Talk podcast. James Graham & Ben Dobbin in for a big show including; the Tigers record loss against the Cowboys, the inconsistent Bunker, the resilient Raiders & why the Broncos need to finish in the top 2.
The Wests Tigers are back in action this weekend with a tough road trip to face the Cowboys. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Steve Stretton and Garry Watson for a look at our chances in that match. The Tigers are struggling again, and are missing key personnel including Api Korisau and Luke Brooks. So, is there a chance? The guys give their opinions on the Round 18 match. Speaking of Luke Brooks, the outgoing Wests Tigers five-eight/halfback has broken his silence on his departure from the club. Eddie, Garry and Steve have their say on some of the interesting revelations Brooks has made about his impending 2024 switch to Manly. On the same topic, what is going on with our recruitment? At this stage it appears to have completely stalled. So, with no 2024 signings locked in (as far as we are aware), should we be starting to hit the panic button? Is the retired Michael Morgan a realistic option? Is the reported dysfunction within the admin of the club costing us recruits? And has Scott Fulton's recruitment into the club been a failure? The boys have their say on all that. There's details too on tomorrow's Ambush event at Wests Ashfield, and Yioti's Quiz! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The journos are back with Danny Weidler, Michael Chammas & Adam Peacock all together again! This week we talk player agent politics, Manly's salary cap management, Dylan Brown's playing future, Trent Robinson's power at the Roosters & Mark Hughes joins us. Plus things get fiery with a Ben Hunt Debate! ------
The Tip Sheet is as busy as ever despite the week off for the Parramatta Eels as Sixties, Forty20 and Clint sort through a bucket load of NRL news and happenings. First up, and on a serious note, is the most recent update to the Dylan Brown's legal situation. The boys discuss what lies ahead for Brown following him pleading guilty to two charges on Wednesday. The NRL is yet to deliver their final punishment and regardless of how that falls, Brown has let plenty of people down with his actions. A flurry of re-signings happened in the mean time for the Eels with Josh Hodgson, Daejarn Asi, Matt Doorey and Bailey Simonsson sorting their near futures out at the club. The contract talk segues to Bryce Cartwright following media reports of external interest in the in-form backrower as the panel looks at what it might take to pry him away from the Eels. The NRLW has been busy as well with their roster finally locked in. With the competition around the corner the boys discuss their expectations for the new look squad and how their team identity might be shifting from what we saw in 2022. There were some earth shaking revelations in the NRL this week with Justin Holbrook sacked by the Titans while Luke Brooks is a Silver Tail. For the Gold Coast they now turn to Des Hasler while the Sea Eagles went on a recruitment and retention spree with Brooks joining a number of other signings on the Northern Beaches. Tigertown is also in the spotlight this week with the departure of Brooks set against reports of clashes between Benji Marshall and Scott Fulton. Reece Walsh copped a 3-game suspension for the expletive laden barrage he delivered to referee Chris Butler. Was it the right punishment? Could Butler have handled the situation differently? What can league refs learn from their union counterparts? The show looks at all of that and more.

The Wests Tigers can put last week's frustration and disappointment to the side with a win over the Storm this weekend. Melbourne, weakened by State of Origin, could be ripe for a loss, that's despite the Storm cleaning up the Sharks last round. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto and Garry Watson preview that clash with the Storm. Luke Brooks is again on the agenda, this time with a chat about the Cowboys knocking back any prospect of the Tigers junior heading north. Is this just a manager trying to up his client's price? Is there a chance Brooks will stay with the Tigers, despite already rejecting our contract offer? Garry gets to have his say on the appointment of Scott Fulton and the possible dysfunction occurring in the club's senior management. Listener feedback features too with lots of comments and questions from the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum. There's also a discussion around a story that broke yesterday afternoon about the potential upgrade of Leichhardt Oval. Digital images showing a rebuilt main stand, a new Northern stand, and updated terraces have been released by the Inner West Council. The only thing needed now is funding commitments, about $100 million dollars worth! The boys look at the proposal and discuss whether this is the right thing for the ground and the club. Eddie and Garry also discuss the potential debut of young hooker, Tallyn Da Silva and the selection of Stefano Utoikamanu in State of Origin. There's also a preview of the next Ambush event on this weekend ahead of the Melbourne Storm clash at Campbelltown. And don't miss Yioti's Quiz!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The hope Wests Tigers fans started to feel a month back is quickly turning into more frustration and angst. Last Thursday night on the Gold Coast was a bleak outing for our club, a meek performance and injuries to key spine players made it an experience most of us would be glad to forget. Then, on that tale end of all that, it appears our administration is again up to their regular hijinks with reports even Tim Sheens might have had enough. One person that looks set to find the exit is Luke Brooks. On this edition of the podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Joel Helmes and Declan McCutcheon to discuss all the latest out of Concord. Some of the key discussion points on this pod: What went wrong against the Titans? Has that performance changed our opinion of several players? Are we happy that Luke Brooks might be getting out? Would Chad Townsend be a good fit for Wests Tigers? While we also take a deep dive into the stories around Tim Sheens, Scott Fulton, and the Wests Tigers administration that just looks, again, like anything but a well-oiled machine. It's a tough time to be a Tiger (again), but we hope you enjoy this edition of the pod. This week, Jacki and Lyle record a much anticipated episode. That's right, listeners - this week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by none other than Scott Fulton. PR professional. Investment analyst. Investor relations executive. And, crucially...Lyle's dad! Scott trained as an economist, and entered stockbroking in the City of London in 1988 as an equity investment analyst working at Credit Commercial de France (CCF). He later worked as an equity analyst at UBS, Credit Suisse, Merrill Lynch and ABN Amro, earning a place in Extel's Top 5 analysts in the Building & Housing sector between 1995 and 1999 Scott later moved into Investor Relations with the likes of Financial Dynamics and Citigate Dewe Rogerson, before setting up his own company in Blackbox Analytics. In an extremely entertaining episode, with no amount of banter aimed in Lyle's direction, Scott discusses his career to date, his work as an analyst and in investor relations, and the changes to the editorial function in the UK over the last 2 decades. He also outlines the importance of not only knowing your audience, but performing differential analysis on these audiences to determine how they behave after receiving information. Jacki uses examples from the gaming and tech industry to evidence these excellent points, before Scott uses a marriage analogy that may well have left Lyle scarred for life! Finally, Scott asks the question 'What sense have we lost in speed?', a fresh interpretation of T.S. Eliot's famous quote 'Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Oh, what a feeling! Wests Tigers made it back-to-back wins after accounting for the Dragons yesterday afternoon. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Steve Stretton, Declan McCutcheon, and Garry Watson. On the agenda, naturally, is that encouraging result in Magic Round. The boys take a look at what worked, what got a pass mark, and what still needs to be improved. While several players come in for special mention, including the man of the minute, Jahream Bula. Speaking of Bula, would you swap him for James Tedesco? We discuss that hypothetical question on this edition of the pod. Another good question raised on the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum by Tiger 5150 - is this the best Wests Tigers team since 2011? There's also a look at the appointment of Scott Fulton as the club's NRL recruitment officer and ask - who gets the final say on player retention and recruitment? Who's the young star player the Wests Tigers have been linked to by journalist Phil Rothfield? There's a look at some questions and comments coming in from the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum. And, Garry gives us a recap of another successful Ambush event held at Wests Ashfield. The Wests Tigers are out to make it two wins in a row when they take on the Dragons in Brisbane this weekend. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto and Declan McCutcheon take a look at the Magic Round match and dare to have a little optimism. The boys also look over the biggest Wests Tigers news story of the week - the appointment of Scott Fulton as Head of Recruitment. As is the case with almost anything Wests Tigers, that appointment came with controversy and a few question marks, including: Should Tim Sheens have known that the appointment was happening? Where does the Fulton hiring leave Sheens in the decision-making hierarchy? Is it a sign Benji Marshall is gaining more control over football operations? Do we really want the CEO, Chairman, and Board to make these types of decisions? What (and who) might Fulton bring to our club? Declan and Eddie also take another look at the latest player signing rumours, including the prospect that Josh Schuster might be coming across the Spit Bridge, and Shaun Johnson could be here for two years too. There's a whole host of comments and feedback from the passionate bunch of fans on the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum. And Yioti has fired in a special Magic Round edition of his quiz. We hope you enjoy this big edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast and that the football gods shine on the team on Sunday afternoon in Brisbane!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The president of Home Ideations and Chair of the National Aging in Place Council®talks about the renewed focus on healthspan and the impact of place on aging well. About Scott Scott Fulton is a longevity authority and healthy aging advocate. An evidence-based researcher, innovator, entrepreneur and pragmatic engineer, Scott is recognized for outside-the-box, direct approaches to solve big challenges. He brings an uncommon systems mindset to public health and aging and believes most of us could easily add ten healthy years to life just by pausing, switching off the noise of life, and internalizing the healthspan opportunity within our reach today. Scott is founder and president of Home Ideations, an education and consulting company focused on healthspan solutions. He teaches at the University of Delaware, chairs the National Aging in Place Council, and is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, National Health Association, and True Health Initiative Council. Key Takeaways The not-for-profit National Aging in Place Council® is a senior support network based in Washington, DC, with chapters around the country. The number of older adults that want to age in place was 80% pre-pandemic, with the number today going over 90% according to most surveys. The three areas that everybody must cover to age in place are primary access to and from your home, the bathing environment, and workarounds for multi-level homes. Spouses often have different visions of where to grow older. One says “take me out of my home feet first” while the other has visions of living in a Disney Vacation Resort. Smart home technology and wearables will get even smarter. Instead of saying “you're falling,” it will detect when you are at risk of falling and make suggestions about how not to fall. Technology is going to arm with precision data tailored to our specific genetics.
#66 - Scott Fulton - Special Project Manager San Jose Jazz Scott Fulton began with San Jose Jazz 2013 to oversee the Summer Fest performing artists' transpiration, getting them pick-up from the airport, taking them to hotels, and getting to their performances. Since then, his role has expanded to include helping write grants, managing the high school all-star big band and the U-19 combo, and organizing the summer camp. Scott played a primary role in the development of the Boom Box, the mobile box truck stage. He has recently led the project to transfer a section of the 310 South First office space (home to SVCreates/Content Magazine and San Jose Jazz) into a performance lounge called the "Break Room." In our conversation, we talk about Scott's influences as a musician and some plans for the "Break Room," which will be open during Summer Fest 2021. Hello, welcome to The New Stack Context, a podcast where we review the week's hottest news in cloud-native technologies/ at-scale application development and look ahead to topics we expect will gain more attention in coming weeks. Hacker News and the Twitterverse were alight this week with discussion of Datadog engineer Jason Moiron's blog post titled “Is Kubernetes Too Complicated?” This article hints at a Kubernetes backlash afoot, with ongoing concerns about its complexity. We speak with TNS correspondent Scott Fulton, who has a TNS article summarizing these issues. In the second half of the show, we'll talk with TNS Managing Editor Joab Jackson about his story on TNS about how Facebook keeps its website snappy for billions of users worldwide. There are so many static packages that a page could use that it would be impossible to download them all at once. Yet all the right elements must be downloaded to the browser within a few seconds. We discuss how they've solved this problem with machine learning, and the engineering team they've built up in New York.
Where will Kubernetes eventually fit in the emerging picture of the distributed applications stack? Is it the virtual infrastructure provider for developers' work environments? And if that's the case, doesn't that work against its chances to penetrate more production environments? Or is it the physical infrastructure manager that OpenStack may never have become for many users? These are questions that The New Stack's Alex Williams and Scott Fulton put to three of the most respected names in open source infrastructure: Donnie Berkholz, former analyst with 451 Research, and now vice president of IT service delivery at Carlson Wagonlit Travel; Krishnan Subramanian, founder and chief research advisor at Rishidot Research; and Jani MSV, principal at Janikiram & Associates.
There is no “normal” for a microservices environment. And if a groundbreaking November 2016 white paper, produced by a team of six researchers from the University of Messina, the U.K.'s Newcastle University, and IBM Research, is to be taken at face value, perhaps such a state of equilibrium may never be attained. Every data center, the researchers write, has unique operating requirements. Once microservices are deployed there, the configurations they require become not only unique, but baked into their respective systems. “Moreover, these microservices have both control and dataflow dependencies,” the white paper reads. “The challenges exist in dealing with heterogeneous configurations of microservices and cloud datacenter resources driven by heterogeneous performance requirements. . . the mapping of microservices to datacenters demands selecting bespoke configurations from an abundance of possibilities, 5 which is impossible to resolve manually.” So if your job is to monitor the behavior of your data center's microservices environment using an applications performance management (APM) platform, what is it that you're looking for? When will you know if the behavior of certain services, or the system as a whole, is out of the ordinary? And once you've determined what “ordinary” is, for the place and time where you work, how long do you expect that to remain the case before it changes completely? “With an APM system, in practice, it's a Web app. So a request comes from an end user, it travels over the open Internet, it hits some servers, and then it's fed through to a database, where a record is updated and the request returns a response, which follows the same path back to the user,” explained Alexis Richardson, the CEO of WeaveWorks, in an interview with The New Stack for an edition of the Context podcast. “In a cloud-native system, the architecture is not particularly so simple,” Richardson continued. “Maybe fifty microservices cooperate and deliver one response to one end user. That's an extreme example. Or maybe one microservice calls another. So if you drew it as a picture on a board, the request would ping-pong around, like a 1980s Breakout console game, until eventually returning to the user, instead of having a straightforward, up/down, request/response. Tracking all of that is very different than tracking in a typical APM setting.” WeaveWorks produces a commercial version of the Prometheus monitoring platform, called Cortex. Richardson told us he agrees that any APM platform vendor that says it can academically extend its agent-based monitoring system from a client/server to a microservices model, is stretching things a bit. “An APM vendor that grew up building support for Web apps, now claiming that it can do the same level of support for any other kind of application, is frankly a pretty hopeful — or maybe hopeless — remark,” he said. Yet how realistic is such an assessment, given the fact that APM platforms are being extended into microservices, and customers are experiencing some results? For this edition of The New Stack: Context, produced by Scott Fulton and Luke Lefler, we conducted interviews with: Alexis Richardson, CEO, WeaveWorks Loris Degioanni, CEO, Sysdig Jim Gochee, Chief Product Officer, New Relic
The ideal of a technology ecosystem is that the people who benefit most from it — presumably, the customers — share the fruits of their labor with the producers who maintain this system. Both the suppliers and the demanders benefit each other, and in so doing, exchange roles from time to time. It's the phenomenon we first saw with the Apple II in the late 1970s — the first community-driven economy devoted to a commercial computing product. A viable ecosystem relies principally upon the exchange of a kind of common currency: benevolence. This virtue typically thrives in the absence of ill will. Yet it's hard for a producer to maintain the right level of benevolence among the members of its ecosystem community, while at the same time defending its own interests against competitors. Just ask Docker. What's more, contributors become skeptical whenever a company's self-interests become visible. Still, such a slip of one's slip is virtually inevitable. That's why companies pre-empt their embarrassments by preaching the gospel of platform agnosticism. We're completely open, says a project like Cloud Foundry or a company like ClusterHQ, to whatever the market decides. When the market is in control of the ecosystem's value structure, as Intel founder Gordon Moore discovered, the only way to stay current is to innovate at such a rapid pace as to justify the product's plummeting market value. In the open source business model, value applies to support. If the value of support declines too much, the business falters. So the objective for each vendor becomes making sure its model is the one being supported — often in lieu of all others. What started out as a Platonic symposium of shared interests becomes a Darwinian scrimmage for survival. As my mother often put it, “To Eat His Own.” Just ask ClusterHQ. Or, actually, you can't. It shut its doors in December 2016. Is a modern IT ecosystem is centered around, and driven by, vendors any more? Or have customers become the ones in charge? That's the subject of our first edition of The New Stack: Context for 2017, produced by Scott Fulton and Luke Lefler.. Our guests for this podcast are: Abby Kearns, Executive Director, Cloud Foundry Foundation Alexis Richardson, CEO, WeaveWorks; TOC Chair, Cloud-Native Computing Foundation Peng Zhao, Founder, Hyper.sh
It wasn't all that long ago — not quite a year — that the leaders in the OpenStack community were openly discussing whether their platform should be expected to support both conventional and cloud-native workloads simultaneously. Some expressed their fear that customers were demanding an evolutionary path, and vendors may be answering demands for such a path, that the platform wasn't intended to take — and that contributing developers didn't want to follow. And on the other side of the fence, the rapid rise of Docker led some prominent voices to declare the impending death of OpenStack. Fast-forward to last August, when Markus Riedinger, a cloud architect for SAP — an OpenStack customer, not a producer — demonstrated how he and his team produced an automated, containerized, CI/CD-compatible OpenStack in their own enterprise. It seemed as though OpenStack's own customers couldn't compel the platform community to adapt to the path they wanted, so they took matters in their own hands. How SAP accomplished this was not by staging Kubernetes through an OpenStack component, or alternately, by cramming OpenStack into a container. Rather, the team re-architected the division of labor in OpenStack among multiple containers, as though it were created that way to begin with. It deliberately separated operations along the control and data planes, to maintain that division. And it created redundancies along both planes as a way of accomplishing immutable operations. “To clearly separate control and data,” Riedinger told attendees, “allows an independent, service-level objective for the data path compared to the control [path], which also implements independent processes and procedures to scale each of the aspects — the control and the data — separately, leading to extending and fixing and improving the existing model to operate the vendor gear. SAP is quite the classical organization… no self-developed hardware. And the existing operating model should be persisted, and just fixed and extended.” Very cleverly, Riedinger's team leveraged the concept of decoupled services to untangle all the OpenStack components that muddle each other in the typical enterprise, along SDN-style lines of control and data. This way, it's never a case of whether the service level of the application is being met by the underlying layer of infrastructure. Rather, it's as if OpenStack were architected as an SDN system from the very beginning. SAP's project may not be the first to successfully containerize OpenStack, but it may well be one of the first to be migrated fully into production. The subject of open source customers using open source processes to openly make software work the way they need it to — rather than to suit the marketing requirements of vendors — is the subject of the latest edition of The New Stack: Context, produced by Scott Fulton and Luke Lefler.
In May 2015, analysts at Gartner rejected OpenStack as a viable platform, for reasons which boil down to its being disruptive. Not quite a year later, analysts at Gartner appeared on stage at OpenStack Summit in Austin, Texas, to embrace OpenStack as a viable platform, for reasons which boil down to its being disruptive. It sounded a little two-faced, as though the analysts group were presenting both a negative and a positive view of a cause-and-effect relationship simultaneously. But when Gartner analyst Donna Scott showed up last April to make peace with OpenStack, what she said outright struck many attendees as startling. She offered bimodal IT to IT professionals as a metaphorical tool, quite literally to give their business managers the perception that the IT department was moving at warp speed, when not everything actually is. Gartner and OpenStack have kissed and made up. And in a clear and sharp clarification of the emerging battle lines, two weeks ago at DockerCon in Seattle, Docker CEO Ben Golub told attendees that Gartner will not be invited to any of his parties soon. “The data is also clear,” Golub explained, “that as people are adopting Docker, it's no longer simply for next-generation, greenfield microservices applications. While clearly the top use cases are in areas like that… one of the most common use cases for Docker is migrating legacy apps to microservices. And an equally common use case is containerizing legacy apps. You might say, ‘Containerizing a legacy app? That's heresy!' But in fact, there are really good reasons to take a legacy app, Docker-ize it, and then move it around.” Docker's customers are looking to employ containerization as a way to mix applications in a unified environment, he explained, not partition them into metaphysical states of being. He singled out bimodal IT specifically as a “fallacy,” suggesting that the effort involved in making old applications coexist with new models could be described as “Mode 2,” and that the migration process requires careful consideration and planning that Gartner would describe as “Mode 1.” The reconciliation between the old and the new models, and the disagreements with the bimodal concept — which extend to OpenStack and OpenShift leader Red Hat as well as Docker — are the subject of this week's edition of The New Stack: Context, a podcast produced by Scott Fulton and Luke Lefler.
