Neuroception - Feeling Safe in Order to Heal

In this episode, I chat with Dr. Pedram Shojai to dive into the fascinating connection between your gut and your overall health. We break down neuroception — how your body subconsciously scans for safety — and why it plays such a critical role in healing and performance. We get into the gut's “second brain,” the enteric nervous system, and how it drives your physical and mental well-being without you even realizing it. Dr. Shojai also shares real-world insights on tackling dysbiosis, understanding gut-immune symbiosis, and how simple lifestyle shifts can radically improve your health. If you've ever wondered how stress, gut health, and the nervous system all tie together — and how to actually use that knowledge to feel better — this is an episode you won't want to miss. Key Takeaways: Understanding Neuroception: Neuroception refers to the subconscious detection of safety or threat in the body, playing a crucial role in both gut health and overall well-being. Gut as an Immune Organ: The gut houses the majority of the body's immune cells, acting as a critical barrier between the inside of the body and external threats. Role of Stress in Gut Health: Chronic stress can disrupt gut microbiota, leading to issues like dysbiosis and gut permeability, thereby affecting mental health. Food Sensitivities: Identifying and avoiding food sensitivities can prevent chronic inflammation, leading to better overall health. Holistic Approaches to Wellness: Emphasizing mind-body practices, such as meditation and breath work, can improve gut health by promoting a balanced parasympathetic state.   More About Dr. Pedram Shojai: Dr. Pedram Shojai is a man with many titles. His books like THE ART OF STOPPING TIME must really work since he seems to be able to get more completed in a day than most of us in a week.  I wanted to use him as a template to ask questions about navigating everyday things since he does have a unique and well trained perspective, but is in the day to day trenches like all of us.  Straightforward, loving, hopeful and helpful.  Dr. Shojai is a great example of building abundance in all the ways that matter, and how we can really participate in making our lives and world a better place, and a place that reflects who we really want to be.  He is kind but I really appreciate the none fluff way he drills down on accountability so that we really can develop the tools to make the desired  changes we are all  looking for in our lives. Happy Thursday! Bernadette and Junior are having a great day! It's Friday-Eve! Thursdays are the day that Bernadette takes to unwind and relax. Bernadette is drinking her chamomile tea because she is just so excited for todays show with Dr. Pedram Shojai, The Urban Monk and up first, The Godfather Of Green, Jerry Yudelson! So stick around! Jerry Yudelson Yudelson is a social activist, environmentalist, engineer and spiritual seeker. He’s chronicled his extensive 50-year career and spiritual journey in his book, “The Godfather of Green: An Eco-Spiritual Memoir.” Jerry’s environmental activism began with the inaugural Earth Day Celebration in 1970, when Jerry was a campus organizer at Caltech. He was a key player in California’s solar energy movement during the 70s and 80s, appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to run the state’s solar development program. Jerry has authored 12 books on green building, sustainable development, water conservation, green homes, building performance and green marketing. California Wildfires and Lessening Our Carbon Footprint This is an important topic! 7.5 million acres have burned this year, compared to 4 million acres last year. Jerry Yudelson says that our climate is getting hotter and drier and staying that way longer. In California, it doesn't rain after May. So you've got 6 months of dry combined with pressure out of the coast which is a perfect recipe for burning. Bernadette brings up that there are an influx of chemicals being created and dumped. Yudelson says we are losing biodiversity and that we will have to spend the next 2-3 generations fixing it. Jerry thinks that fires will get worse and become more abundant the longer we go without doing something. Do something today! Eat lower on the food chain and buy local! Start thinking about what you buy and what it took to get it to you. If you can afford it, buy an electric vehicle because it will be necessary in the future. We are entering an era that is unprecedented. In 20 years, we will look at the year 2020 and reminisce on how cool the temperature was. This is not the end of a global warming epidemic, it is only the beginning. Pedram Shojai Dr. Pedram Shojai Is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Master Herbalist and acupuncturist, better known as “The Urban Monk”. He is the New York Times best selling author of “The Urban Monk" and "The Art of Stopping Time” and also the founder of Well.org. Dr. Shojai uses Eastern thinking and practices to help others overcome Westernized challenges of everyday life and live life to the fullest. His upcoming book, "FOCUS: Bringing Time, Energy and Money into Flow" will be out in November. How to Bring Time, Energy and Money into Flow We are so excited to have Dr. Pedram Shojai on One Life Radio! Bernadette asks Pedram if he is anxious to write and release another book. Pedram Shojai says that writing a book takes a lot of water from your personal garden. We are talking about the difference between life and live! Life is the greatest mystery we have in front of us. Living life is a low bar, it doesn't take a lot to keep breathing. We have to think more abstractly about how we want to spend the remainder of our heartbeats until we have none left. We live in an era with a crisis of consciousness. Our awareness is both a gift and a burden because we can get distracted and distorted when trying to battle our sentience. Sentience and life are inextricably linked. Don't be reactive, be proactive! In his book, Pedram talks about his 5 areas of life, in his book. The first area is career, then there's family, desires, passion and health. All those categories need water from you. You need action! Tie what you want to do with saying it and making choices to make things happen. The two biggest things in our lives are the struggle for love and the legal tender. Everything comes full circle, and the choices we make are so important for our gardens.

Jasmin is an internationally published model and upcoming actress. I am so proud she shares her story of domestic violence and loved learning about her modeling career and discuss Playboy and the stigma vs her experience. She told me "after you fold a piece of paper and flatten it out, it may still be a piece of paper but it will never be the same" and that's what it's like with abuse. She hated feeling weak or anyone else feeling that way. She had the power of 1 on 1 therapy, put effort into herself. She took TIME, no medication and was authentic and thankful. OF COURSE, I asked her about breast size, plastic surgery and feeling your best. In her words: I started my journey 4 years ago and have never looked back since. It was an interesting journey for me, starting in a small city in Australia. I am a first-generation Australian, with a Persian and German background. So I believe my ability to adapt and my international look were qualities noticed by a lot of professionals in the industry. When I started modeling, I had just come out of a domestic violence relationship that went on for several months. I wanted to try something new and do something for myself. I always wanted to be a model and actress since I was a child. And perhaps this was the perfect time to pursue it. In my second year of modeling, I entered one of the top Glamour Model competitions happening at the time and ultimately won the title of 'Australia's Top Glamour Model of 2017' This experience and achievement alone was incredible, and it truly gave me a lot of recognition. I was given an extended year to my 'crown', after the director noticed my ongoing achievements in my career I have posed for the Playboy brand 7 times. Including a Cover in October 2018 for Playboy Croatia. And was also named 'Playmate of the Month' for that issue. I have modeled for fashion, beauty and other men's magazines as well. You can view my interview and feature with Maxim USA online, which was such an honor to be a part of The USA and LA specifically have been huge positives, and influences in my life. I am honored to have connected with so many people. And call LA one of my homes. I am very passionate about modeling and acting, and the US industry has more than helped me. It has inspired me and has kept me more driven than ever to do my best. With acting, I have done music videos, a commercial, a film in Seattle called 'The Alliance' by Robert L. Butler, and an Australian Mini-Series called 'At The Phoenix'. I have strong goals when it comes to acting. And I can definitely say, developing both my acting and modeling career in the United States were the best decisions I have ever made I currently travel between LA, Sydney, and Canberra. And look forward to networking with industry professionals around the globe. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-naked-podcaster/message Support this podcast

(Warning: This Sherpa Sheet makes continuous use of the word "super"...in case that word easily offends you. But listen to the interview with Jasmin, and it makes heaps of sense.) Before we started our recording, Jasmin asked if it was okay if her cockatiels flew around during the interview. Not a problem (Not like it was a pet lion!!).So we had built - in nature sounds for a super-down to earth person! I really admired her candor throughout the interview, whether about modeling, acting, social media, posing for Playboy, or cosmetic surgery. (Super honest!) She told me she really wanted to let people know about cosmetic surgery, and has appeared on other venues to discuss it as well. She's worked so hard to get to the level that she's at, and she has a great appreciation of how far she's gotten (super grounded!) . Plus! What does a supermodel do on her day off? We are excited to bring you a fascinating interview about our microbiome with Pedram Shojai from Well.org this week! Tune in to understand how our microbiome is the ecosystem of our lives. You’ll learn how your gut health affects your immunity and mental health. And the new fascinating discoveries being made about the bacteria in our tissues and organs and how they support healthy function. You don’t want to miss Pedram’s tips for ensuring you tend a happy healthy microbiome. It all starts in 3...2...1!   * * *   Dr. Pedram Shojai is a man with many titles. He is the founder of Well.Org, the NYT Best Selling author of The Urban Monk, Rise and Shine, and The Art of Stopping Time. He’s the producer and director of the movies “Vitality,” “Origins.” And “Prosperity.” In his spare time, he’s also a Taoist Abbot, a doctor of Oriental medicine, a Kung Fu world traveler, a fierce global green warrior, an avid backpacker, a devout alchemist, a Qi Gong Master, and an old school Jedi bio-hacker working to preserve our natural world and wake us up to our full potential.   The Ecosystem of Life - Your Microbiome Science has now shown is that we are much more intimately connected with all the life on the planet than we ever knew through the bacteria, viruses, protozoa, nematodes, even parasites that live inside our body. There's RNA and DNA that we can now analyze on these bugs and understand how they support many human functions. These functions are actually attributed to these bacteria that are co-existing with us. The word is symbiosis. All of this life in and around us is part of what makes us human and without it, we collapse, and we fall ill. If you don't have proper gut health and you're not supporting the life inside of you, there are entire systems that are collapsing that are leading to inflammation and chronic disease.   Where It All Begins The first inoculation of our microbiome is as we come through the birth canal. 30% of mom's breast milk are these oligosaccharides that get secreted by mom. They are indigestible by baby. They're specifically designed to feed the bacteria in the baby's gut. Now fast forward here, you need to eat the fiber, vegetables, phytonutrients, and all these things that these bacteria eat, not for you but for the bacteria. If we put them first and understand how to feed them, they take care of us and in turn we get less illness, less chronic disease, we have more energy, things work.   Every Tissue, Every Organ In The Body Has Bacteria Associated With It Researchers found that women with tumors in their breasts had a different mix of bacteria living in the tissue compared with women who did not have tumors. The research team discovered for the first time that healthy breast tissue contains more of the bacterial species Methyl bacterium. It is blowing the doors open on everything we know about medicine and this is just the beginning.   The Microbiome and Your Immunity About 70% or so of our immune system is around our guts, it's called the gut associated lymphatic tissue. The bacteria are acting as the sentinels between the outside world and the inside world and telling the immune system that everything is good. You can't heal if your immune system is constantly battling and that all starts in the gut and that all has to do with how the microbiome is informing the immune system to either attack or to relax and it will do so based on what is in there.   What Lifestyles Are Destroying Our Microbiome and Causing Leaky Gut? Standard American Diet Not enough prebiotics to feed the good bacteria. Food allergies like gluten and dairy.   Why Leaky Gut Matters Once you start creating inflammation and tears in the lining of the gut, there are food particles that will sneak through and the immune system says, "Hey, you're not supposed to be on this side." It will start to create antibodies to those food particles as foreign invaders. This is how food allergies are created. Creates systemic inflammation throughout the body.   How to Improve Your Microbiome Work with a Functional Medicine Doctor. Analysis of your microbiome. You look at how we need to eat and ‘who’ we need to feed. Include indigestible fiber in your daily diet. You consume a variety of fermented foods and prebiotic foods with every single meal and you adjust for feeding the bacteria that help you thrive. Reduce sugar in your diet. By bringing down the bacteria, specifically like the yeast and bad bacteria that thrive on sugars in particular, you'll start to notice a difference very quickly. Increase fiber intake.   Benefits of a Healthy Microbiome Brain fog dissipates. Anxiety and depression reduced. Energy levels increase. Excess weight is released.   What Role Do Parasites Play in Gut Health? We're finding that there's certain parasites that help bring down your blood sugar. Dr. Pedram Shojai saw this lack of knowledge in the filed and said enough is enough. Since then, he has written multiple books, produced many films and works as an advocate for anybody who needs a change in the operating system and wants to think more clearly about how they view health on a day to day basis. Today we are diving into how to live life with intention, focus on your internal wellbeing, and explore the hidden secrets of your microbiome. How do you reset and take care of yourself? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!   Quotes: “I’m wanting to eradicate illness, and all I’m paid for, is frankly, to be honest, there are no incentives to even keeping people well because the money is all in treating sick people, right?” (6:29) “Oh my God who the hell wants to be normal!? Normal gets sick, normal has chronic disease, normal is being told what to wear by the Kardashians. Normal is not normal, right? Normal has become zombie automaton slave in this like world that we live in. So if you are trying to be normal you might as well check yourself in and get a hospital bed” (19:57) “The answer isn’t probiotics, it’s to live probiotically. Right, and its so hard to get through our thick skulls because we have been so trained to be like okay, what's the pill?” (27:16) “Cancer is cancer and it sucks. But then you start looking at the psychology of the person who says that, and you start looking at the toxicity levels in the microbiome, and then just the psyche that starts to develop around somebody who goes toxic, stays toxic, and instead of trying to heal themselves sort of leans into it.” (36:27)   Resources Mentioned: Interconnected: The Healing Secrets of the Microbiome Documentary Series Well.org Website The Urban Monk Website View Dr. Pedram’s Other Books   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube

Grace & Grit Podcast: Helping Women Everywhere Live Happier, Healthier and More Fit Lives

The fitness industry has made exercise very, very complicated. So complicated, in fact, that many women I coach have fierce resistance to it, even though they understand the importance of it. What if the secret to feeling better fast physically, emotionally and mentally wasn’t about the latest and greatest exercise system that the fitness industry has conjured up but rather about moving your body more consistently throughout the day? Loving this podcast? Head over to iTunes and leave a review so the Grace and Grit message can spread to more women who need to hear it. Writing a review will enter you in a drawing to win free access to the Grace & Grit 21-Day Challenge. Drawings will be held at the end of every month. Notes: 2:00: What children have to teach us about movement. 5:25: How we moved away from movement and into the exercise box. 7:30: Exercise is very small part of the movement landscape. 10:40: How the age of convenience is destroying our physicality. 12:00: Excerpt from Pedram Shojai’s, The Urban Monk 17:00: Revisiting the power of N.E.A.T. 19:30: Ideas to help you move more, without “exercising”. Hello my clan of the crave bears! It’s Alex here with episode number 72! In today’s episode I want to talk about the feeling of overwhelm that I have been experiencing, many of my friends and so many of you my readers and listeners been dealing with. It comes with frustration and anxiety this overwhelm. We are just at the beginning of month two on 2016 and so many people have come to me saying they are so anxious, so stressed out. How is this possible? I am supposed to feel rejuvenated at the beginning of the year. How do I deal with this? Today’s episode is for you if you are dealing with stress, anxiety, overwhelm.  My guest today is a dear friend: Pedram Shojai the founder of well.org, editor of Be More magazine (that I have appeared in) and is the author of “Rise and Shine” and co-host of the podcast, The Health Bridge, and producer of the movie “Vitality” and the upcoming film “Origins”. Pedram wrote a book that is coming out this week called “The Urban Monk: Eastern wisdom and modern hacks to stop time and find happiness, success and peace”. Pedram has a very interesting life story. He is trained as a chiropractor, he is also a Taoist priest, a doctor of oriental medicine, he studied kung Fu. He is a fierce global green warrior! He just has all these incredible old school, Jedi, bio hacking tricks. So he really brings together eastern wisdom and modern bio hacking. We will talk about how Pedram sees my theory about the four roots causes of cravings and his perspectives as an eastern, medical expert. In this episode, Dr. George and John were fortunate to be able to speak with a modern day renaissance man… Pedram Shojai, OMD. Pedram is a man with many titles… He is the founder of Well.Org and the executive producer and writer for the film, “Origins.” In his spare time, he's also a Taoist priest, a doctor of Oriental medicine, a kung fu world traveler, a fierce global green warrior, an avid backpacker, a devout alchemist, a Qi Gong Master, and an old school Jedi bio-hacker working to preserve our natural world and wake us up to our full potential. Wow… In this interview Pedram talks about his forthcoming book “The Urban Monk” which describes how we can thrive and have peace in our lives right now wherever we are, without the need to run for the hills or meditate in a cave. This is important information for everyone! Pedram shared that a conscious connection to your “higher self” or whatever term you prefer, impacts all your decisions. Everything you experience goes through this filter, so having this realization helps life make more sense. Our materialistic consumerist society feeds the “hungry ghost” mentality and this vicious cycle is never ending. The only way to find peace is to honor this inner, higher connection. Transformational change can happen daily as a result of living out of this conscious awareness. Visit www.JingHerbs.com now! In this episode of The Model Health Show we're happy to welcome Dr. Pedram Shojai. Author, Teacher, Qigong master, and Film-maker are just a few of the accolades Dr. Shojai carries. He's a brilliant man and a leader who's devoted to pointing the camera on "the good guys" to help spread awareness about holistic and integrative medicine. This episode is a truly eye-opener. We discuss so many critical topics that every-single-person will be able to grab something powerful from. Sitting across from my cohost (the beautiful Jade Harrell), I saw her with pure joy on her face at one point during the interview, and at another point with tears in her eyes. All I can say is this information is POWERFUL. I'm really excited to share this episode because we also talked about the #1 thing that helped me get to where I am today. I want more people to know about this because I really feel it's the solution to getting in alignment with your purpose and really finding fulfillment in your life. So, yes, you're about to find out what the best personal health insurance is (and you won't need a high-priced, dud website for you to get it). But more importantly, you're about to get an abundance of insights to help improve the health of you and your family for many years to come. In this episode you'll discover: What the missing component in our health care system really is. The difference between a conventional doctor and an OMD. Why our healthcare system is based on a backwards way of thinking. What Traditional Chinese Medicine can teach us about paying for health care. Why even a healthy pharmaceutical system is still missing a critical element. Who actually controls a large portion of the medical education in the U.S. How commercials for pharmaceutical drugs are using strong neuroscience (to seduce you). How "overcomplicating" health makes people into easy, long-term customers. The #1 thing you can do to ensure the health care system works for you. Where you can find the best health insurance you can buy (hint: farmers are involved). Why really good doctors are struggling with the pharmaceutical model as well. How stress makes us sick (and why today's stress is radically different from our ancestors). Why our medical system doesn't properly address the mind/body/spirit connection. How to INSTANTLY make your body more alkaline and nourish your organs (this is 100% free & accessible anytime). What your sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are and why they're important. What role bacteria plays in our gene expression (this is CRITICAL to know!) Why not being born via a natural, vaginal birth can cause major issues with bacteria balance. The real reason that people have such low energy levels today. Items mentioned in this episode include: * Vitality - The Movie * Well.org Thank you so much for checking out this episode of The Model Health Show.
