In this episode of On Boards, hosts Joe Ayoub and Raza Shaikh welcome Lucie Claire Vincent, a global leader in consumer products and an independent board director, to discuss the vital role of risk governance in board effectiveness. Lucie Claire shares insights from her distinguished career at Fortune 100 companies, her experience as an independent director, and her work with the Directors and Chief Risk Officers Institute (DCRO). Lucie Claire also delves into the importance of earning the Qualified Risk Director (QRD) designation and the impact it has on boardroom discussions and decision-making. With her rich international experience and expertise in risk governance, she offers actionable insights for board members and aspiring directors on navigating the complexities of modern board oversight. Key Takeaways The Importance of Risk Governance in the Boardroom: Lucie Claire emphasizes the board's role in overseeing risk, particularly in a fast-changing environment where issues like AI, cybersecurity, and enterprise risk management dominate the agenda. Positive risk governance can shift perspectives from mere risk avoidance to value creation. DCRO's Educational Programs: DCRO's Certificates in Risk Governance and Cyber Risk Governance provide comprehensive, globally recognized training for directors and executives. These programs combine in-depth content, business case analysis, and cohort-based learning to enhance participants' ability to manage and oversee risk effectively. Earning the Qualified Risk Director (QRD) Designation: Achieving the QRD requires a rigorous self-assessment, relevant professional experience, and references, positioning individuals as experts in risk governance. Lucie Claire describes the designation as akin to being a “qualified financial expert” for risk, making QRD holders valuable assets to boards. Bringing Value to the Boardroom: Lucie Claire's certification has enhanced her ability to guide discussions on innovation, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning with a risk-positive mindset. Her contributions have been particularly relevant in her role with technology and B2B organizations. Who Should Pursue Risk Governance Credentials? Current and aspiring board members, as well as senior executives, can benefit from these programs to build resilience, value, and trust within their organizations. Networking and Continued Learning: DCRO fosters a global community of risk professionals through events, newsletters, and case studies, providing ongoing learning opportunities for its members. Quotes "The concept of positive governance in risk-taking changes how you see risk. It's about value creation and having a more strategic, long-term view of the business." "The diversity of industries, thought, and verticals in my DCRO cohort enriched the conversations. It's fascinating to see how risks are addressed differently across sectors." "Most boards still place the risk component within the audit committee, but as risk becomes more complex, there's a growing need for separate risk committees." Guest Bio Lucie Claire Vincent is an accomplished leader in global consumer products, having held senior roles at Colgate Palmolive and Philip Morris International. She serves on the board of Toluna, advises startups in consumer technology, and is an adjunct professor at NYU's School of Professional Studies. A lifelong learner, Lucie Claire holds multiple governance certifications, including a Qualified Risk Director designation from the DCRO Institute. It also mentioned that the industry is expected to decrease by 1% over the next few years. Jason talks about how, while the overall industry may decline, pockets still experience growth, and you just need to uncover them. Next, the guys talk about the new appointment to the Toluna board. They ponder if this accelerates Toluna's move to target brands and offers them a full suite of solutions. The guys then switch gears a bit and talk about a $33 million investment in Anomalo, a California-based data quality platform. They talk about how the platform works and if there are any potential applications for the market research industry. The second half of the episode starts off with the debut of the new intro music for the AI News segment. Jason and Brian then dig into some recent AI news stories, including news that Publicis Group plans to invest 300 million Euros in AI over the next three years. The next few AI stories aren't market research-specific but could impact the industry and industries we serve. First, the guys talk about the recently issued executive order around AI that aims to ensure that the US leads the way and manages the risk of artificial intelligence. Brian and Jason postulate that this is probably just the start of AI legislation.  In the last story, they guys dive deep into news that New York had proposed a new law called the New York Robot Act that would impose a tax surcharge on “using technology to displace workers,” in an amount equal to taxes and fees that would have been paid on what an employee would have earned in the eliminated position. Jason and Brian are a bit on opposite sides of the debate on this one, but come out at the end seeing each other's point of view. Thanks for tuning in! Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a jammed packed news episode for you today.  Before jumping into the latest market research news, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian catch up on some current events, including some Halloween talk, as well as talking about the last couple of conferences of 2022. Then the guys jump into the news, starting with a couple of stories about Momentive.  First, they discuss the announcement that Momentive was reducing their workforce by 11% as part of a restructuring plan. They then touch on another Momentive story that came out a few days after the previous one where they had been approached about another potential sale. The guys then discuss a string of merger and acquisition stories, starting with the news that Maru Group was acquired by Stagwell, a marketing communications company. They also talk about the acquisition of GutCheck by Toluna, and Voxpopme acquiring Jamin Brazil's company HubUX.  As part of the discussion around these acquisitions, it leads Brian and Producer Brian down a road to a couple of philosophical discussions. One is the impact of investment, specifically in the sample industry, and how it is causing sample to become inconsistent because of the investment. The other is how sample is not a commodity. After the large acquisitions segment, Brian and Producer Brian touch on the news about the new product enhancement Suzy has rolled out to their platform. In a story that is right up Producer Brian's alley, the guys talk about the announcement that Nielsen will be reporting viewing figures for Netflix next year as Netflix rolls out their ad-supported subscription option. This leads to a deeper discussion about the bad blood that existed between the two companies just a few years ago, and how they might have moved forward from it.

We have the pleasure of welcoming Mark Simon, the Managing Partner for Hawkmoon Advisors, as our guest for today’s podcast. Mark is joining us to talk about his journey and share his experiences with the kind of work he has been doing to help small businesses scale, grow, and reach their goals. He also talks about what ten-million-dollar companies need to be thinking about if they want to scale. About Mark Mark disappeared off the research industry radar for a while after leaving Toluna at the end of 2019 and moving back to the UK. He joined an IT SaaS business in the UK called Datto, and after that gig came to a close, he set up a consulting business that helped small SaaS businesses get going. Mark’s journey After finishing university, Mark spent a few years in Paris, teaching English at a high school. After that, he spent most of the rest of his twenties playing the guitar in a rock and roll band, touring around, and having lots of fun. Then he went to work for a marketing agency that won a contract to take AOL to the UK. At the time, Mark was about to get married, and being a bit bored with the work he was doing, he started looking around for something new. He ended up spending an enjoyable year as an individual contributor for a company called Greenfield Online in Europe, where he learned a lot. He then got a call from someone at Toluna, saying that they were about to list the company on the London Stock Exchange, and they wanted him to lead them in doing that. Toluna Mark took a risk and joined Toluna. He now feels that was one of the smartest things that he has ever done. He set up a digital practice there, and they went to market properly. He had great fun getting them up to eight figures. An issue Toluna had an issue in their North American business, and they asked Mark to go there to turn it around, which he did. He managed to turn things around fairly quickly, and he ended up staying there for another six years before returning to the UK. What ten-million-dollar companies need to think about in terms of scaling Mark explains that at any point in your company’s trajectory, you have to think and act like you’re bigger than you are, and that applies from the CEO down to the people who you hire. Hiring is critical In Mark’s experience with fast-moving companies, he was spending 70-80 percent of his time hiring or coaching people. He points out that if you don’t do that as a leader, and you’re trying to scale, you are probably focusing on the wrong things. The people you hire Look for people who can act one level up but could also be capable of thinking two levels up. Recurring business Think about some way to get recurring business and repeatable, predictable cash flow. That will build value in your company. Incentives For a ten-million-dollar business, all your incentives need to be in line. It is vital to over-emphasize rewards for long-term contracts. Customers Your customers’ satisfaction needs to be ahead of your acquisitions. The Rule of Forty At ten million, you need to make sure that your company can exceed the Rule of Forty. That is very important for any recurring revenue business. Expanding internationally You should not expand your company internationally too quickly because that could be dangerous if you don’t have a cultural understanding of what works well in different places. A framework for hiring salespeople Interviewing salespeople can be difficult to do, so it helps to build a framework for hiring salespeople. Three things that are important to include in that process, regardless of the environment you’re in, are: Coachability A competitive streak Empathy, rapport-building, listening, and cultural alignment Also, any toxic high-achievers need to get removed from the team. Hiring a Head of Sales Hiring the right Head of Sales can be a scary decision for a CEO to have to make,

[00:08] This episode is brought to you by HubUx.  HubUx is a productivity tool for qualitative research.  It creates a seamless workflow across your tools and team.  Originally, came up with the idea as I was listening to research professionals in both the quant and qual space complain about and articulate the pain, I guess more succinctly, around managing qualitative research.  The one big problem with qualitative is it’s synchronous in nature, and it requires 100% of the attention of the respondent. This creates a big barrier, and, I believe, a tremendous opportunity inside of the marketplace.  So what we do is we take the tools that you use; we integrate them into a work flow so that, ultimately, you enter in your project details, that is, who it is that you want to talk to, when you want to talk to them, whether it’s a focus group, in-person, or virtual or IDI’s or ethnos; and we connect you to those right people in the times that you want to have those conversations or connections – Push-Button Qualitative Insights, HubUx.  If you have any questions, reach out to me directly. Phil, thanks for joining me on the Happy Market Research Podcast today.  [02:02] Thanks for having me.  [02:03] I really want to start out and talk about the growth that we are seeing inside of the user experience and customer experience space. If you see like the ESOMR data, market research largely has been flat and yet you have these massive growth revenue numbers in the companies that are focusing on user experience and customer experience. I don’t know if you follow hashtags on LinkedIn; I pay a lot of attention to that. And so, just as a point of reference, market research is around 350,000 to 400,000 people that follow that hashtag whereas a user-experience research is around 4.5 million. So it's crazy like the delta between the amount of people that are following these different trends and the attention they're getting despite the fact that in a lot of ways they're doing similar types of methodologies. Application might be different. Where they sit in the org structure is different. But, anyway,

Thanks very much for joining me on the Happy Market Research Podcast today. [01:07]   Yep, thanks for having me.  I’m honored. [01:08]   So, tell me a little bit about your upbringing:  What you parents did, and how that’s informed your career? [01:14] So, my parents are immigrants.  I’m a first generation American, I’d say here.  And it’s funny ‘cause like you always hear about these immigrant stories of them coming to the United States with like $18 in their pocket and then them being like these massive successes.  Actually, my family was quite opposite: My dad and his brothers came with a ton of money, and they just blew it on really bad investments or risks, whatever you want to call it, and they had to start all over.  So my family is very entrepreneurial in nature. They hustle; they grind; they’re very educated. And my upbringing was kind of that. I was working with my dad and my mom at their businesses, going to school. It’s kind of lead me to where I am today here at Toluna and leading products and strategy for the group. And I like it because, although we’re a pretty decent size organization, we’re a corporate culture.  We still have the entrepreneurial mindset in everything we do. And that’s why I’m here, and I’m enjoying the work I’m doing. [02:17] The starting-over part is really interesting to me especially because, having exited FocusVision, all of a sudden, I’m kind of in a spot now where I’m quite literally starting over, right?  But my parents had a similar situation where they had invested in a small farm. Then, all of a sudden, the value of the produce dropped by, roughly speaking, three-quarters. And after about three years of that, they had, ultimately, they just couldn’t make the payments anymore.  And so, it was a complete reset from a financial perspective which, for me as a kid, you know they helped protect us but family-owned businesses are... The whole family feels it, right? You’re invested in that business along with your family from a work perspective. What kind of core values or lessons learned did you get when they went through that restart process? [03:08]    Yeah,

THIS EPISODE’S SPONSOR: GreenBook CONTACT RICHARD ONLINE: LinkedIn Voxpopme [00:02] Richard Merrick, Voxpopme, tell us a little about what you guys do. [00:07] We are a video in-size platform. Really, the aim of the company is to make working with video as quick and as easy as possible, so we work with brands and agencies is to make that happen. [00:17] How long have you been with the company? [00:20] Just over a year, so joined last January. [00:22] We’re live today at the IIeX show. You’ve not been to one of these before then. [00:28] First one was last year. Initially, I just joined and came right over for it. It’s really good. Really great conference. [00:35] You’re based out of London? [00:36] Yes. [00:37] What did you do before Voxpopme? [00:38] I worked for a few different tech companies. I was with Toluna for a couple of years and before that Instantly. I always worked in the tech side of market research. [00:48] You’ve been in the market research space for the majority of your career? [00:51] Unfortunately. [00:52] How did you wind up in market research? [00:56] Like most people I just fell into it. I’ve done sales and client service success for a while in different industries. Then an opportunity came up with a company called Chow, who was a part of Greenfield way back in the day. I joined those and unfortunately, I’ve been here ever since. (Laughs.) [01:14] Yes, I know. It’s funny. There is this gravitational pull for if you make it for about three years to five years in a career, I feel like it’s hard to break out of the space. [01:27] Yes, you’re just stuck in. (Laughs.) [01:28] It’s a big industry, it’s exciting. We are going through a lot of change right now. Of course, Voxpopme right on the forefront of that with video insights. What are you seeing that’s resonating with your customers as it relates with video right now? [01:44] There are a few different things. Firstly, and this is a quote from an actual customer, brands particularly now have more data on customers than they’ve ever had in the past. What that’s led to is the lack of empathy for consumers because they’re just stats. They look at graphs, dashboards so the power of video is to really bring the consumer back into those brands and one of the things that we always hear back from clients is the impact that it can have internally. Instead of just going through a PowerPoint presentation with stats on there and details so to be able to show a two to three-minute video bringing all those messages to life just really helps with them getting across the messages to their stakeholders or their clients. [02:33] In 2013, I did a study for eBay. Maybe it was 2012, excuse me. In the study, it was an Amazon versus eBay comparison and contrast and it was an important project for them from a strategic perspective. As I worked with the internal researchers, I was at the site at the time, and we came up with this presentation, charts, graphs, et cetera. Finally, I’m like, it just didn’t feel exactly human, so we did video testimonials as part of the survey itself so people would record themselves talking about why they use eBay, why they use… We incorporated a few of those choice videos into the PowerPoint presentation. It made it all the way up the board of directors and one of the board members said, “This is the first time we’ve had the voice of the consumer in the boardroom.” [03:40] Oh, wow. That’s incredible. [03:42] It really goes to talk about how we as an industry on the quant side, not the qual side, but on the quant side have done a bad job of humanizing data. Nobody has 2.3 kids. In that framework,

I have got Frank Hayden, the CEO – COO, excuse me, right? For Op4G? [00:12] Op4G. [00:12] Op4G, sorry. Which sounds like a rapper sort of thing. [00:18] It can be to some people. (Laughs.) But in the market research space, we’re a— [00:23] You down with OP— Anyway. [00:24] Yes, Op4G is Opinions 4 Good and we work with nonprofits. From the food bank of San Francisco to American Red Cross to very local charitable groups. We do an outreach for them to have their members, their donors, volunteers and supporters to join our panel and with their participation of surveys, they have to put back a percentage to the nonprofit that brought them to us. We’re here today in Amsterdam rolling out our European business. [01:06] How are you guys different than Research For Good? [01:10] We’re different in the fact that we actually go out and make the relationship with the nonprofit, which means it’s a little bit stickier. They can go into our portal and see how many dollars that their research activities have generated for that nonprofit. Research For Good, you join their panel, and they do more of a river based sampling as well, mixing that in, which we’re different in that fact that we only work with nonprofits exclusively. With them, you can pick and choose who you want to join with. With us, you’re pretty much invited in. There’s no open recruitment. [01:59] That’s super interesting. How long have you been around? Has the business been around? [02:05] Eight years. [02:09] And you were early? A founder? [02:11] I was early in. They asked me to come in. I was with Greenfield, then Toluna, then sat out a year, and then they asked me to pretty much start the business from scratch. [02:22] It’s interesting having an invite-only approach because one of the biggest issues facing market research, in my opinion, is centered around data quality. I’m 22 years in the industry. CPIs continue to go down. We’ve hit the bottom of that, by the way. The actual amount of money or reward that goes to the respondent is relatively small. Again, in aggregate, not picking on any specific brands here or companies. It really is, for me, creating this moment of crisis. I do this exercise, in fact, I’m going to do it tomorrow when I speak here: “How many of you have taken a survey in the last six months for third-party companies?” I’m not talking about satisfaction on the last customer service interaction, I’m talking about outside solicitation of, “I’d like your opinion.” The answer is not very many people ever raise their hand to that question. And yet, there’s an order of, back of the napkin, about 1.4 million surveys that are done in North America every day. There are a lot of surveys that are being done, and I can’t figure out who’s doing all the surveys. You’ve got this inflection point of overall CPIs are really cheap and then you’ve got more demand for people to take surveys. It’s starting to really kind of hit this, in my opinion, I’m calling it a crisis, that’s probably overstating it, but it’s a material concern centered around data quality. How good is the actual data? Just to finish the point, Remesh, I’m very good friends with Andrew, the founder, and Gary, his COO. They now have in their open-ended, moderated, chat-based discussions, they now ask a screening question which is, “What is your favorite color?” Sixty percent of the answers that they get back are, on average, are “I really like that” and “ASDF.” That’s the first question. (Laughs.) Right? That’s kind of the problem that we’re facing and so having an invite-only panel is interesting because, presumably,

[00:00:03] You know I think that we have to recognize that companies have cycles and so if I look at the current cycle, I think that where we are right now is [INAUDIBLE] a decision that we made four or five years ago. And the decisions were very - I mean, looking back, very simple but you know at the time they were quit bold. [00:00:30] Over the last decade the market research industry has been disrupted, our largest agencies are struggling to keep up as their customers turn to newer, faster and cheaper data sources, now we are on the edge of yet another market shift. Now is the time for us to reassert ourselves as the rudder of the brands we love. Thank you for tuning in to the Happy Market Research Podcast where we are charting the path for the future of market researchers and businesses. Under his leadership Toluna has had a successful and stories legacy, playing a key role in the market research space. Frederic, thank you very much for being on the Happy Market Research Podcast. [00:01:21] Thank you for inviting me, I’m thrilled. [00:01:23] So what did you parents do and how did that affect your career? [00:01:27] Yes, I think that’s a very good question, actually because my father which is a role model for me, was an entrepreneur, and across his career he had to change business, move countries, and I think I always looked at him as a very hard working person, always working hard and trying to show the example but also very low profile in terms of his talent or his authority or his interaction with people and I think that influenced me into wanting to build a business, and I think that’s the role model, clearly, and I saw the same with my mother, she was not working, but she was a very hard working person as well and she still is actually. [00:02:28] The subject of humility is interesting especially from contrasting the earlier generations to modern generation, there’s a lot of self promotion going on in social media now, myself included, I guess, how do you think the tension, or where is the tension between humility and at the same time talking about your whatever it is that you’re doing in order to promote your brand, your products and ultimately yourself, so that you can have a successful, modern career? [00:03:02] It’s a good question, I think that you can still be humble, the low profile for me is being humble, and you know having this mentality of a challenger, by that, I mean that the minute you believe that you are a leader and therefore you should have the status of a leader which I don’t know anyone who would think like that. I think you’ve already lost the envy, the traction, the appetite for growing and for change and I think being humble and passionate, I think these are tools that can follow you during all your career and you can still be humble and be proud of what you’ve achieved but I think that there is a fine line and clearly times have changed, but you can still be – try to accommodate the two. [00:03:58] Tell us about your transition from your early career in law to a start up of Toluna? [00:04:06] So yes,
