Primeramente dirigí los ojos al fondo, después los levanté hacia el Sol, y me admiraba de que éste nos iluminase por la izquierda. El Poeta observó que me quedaba estupefacto, mirando el carro de la luz que iba a pasar entre nosotros y el Aquilón; por lo cual me dijo: —Si Cástor y Pólux estuvieran en compañía de aquel espejo, que ilumina al mundo tanto por arriba como por abajo, verías al Zodíaco refulgente girar más próximo aún a las Osas, a no ser que saliese fuera de su antiguo camino. Y si quieres comprender cómo puede suceder esto, reconcentra tu pensamiento, y considera que el monte Sion está situado sobre la Tierra, relativamente a éste, de modo que ambos tienen un mismo horizonte y diferentes hemisferios; por lo cual, si tu inteligencia te permite discernir con claridad, verás cómo el camino que por su mal no supo recorrer Faetón, debe ir necesariamente por un lado de este monte, al paso que va por el opuesto lado de aquel otro.

Talibah Atiya Najee Aquil is a multifaceted teacher, facilitator, artist, and healer,  but at the center of everything she does is a story of self and society-and helping others learn how to reclaim that story for themselves. This is getting to the root of healing work. Decolonizing perceptions, thoughts, and narratives about what it means to be Black in America, and in the world. She is founder of We Are Magic! Where she leads healing tours to Ghana for people of the African Diaspora to return to the place of their ancestral lineage and connect to their birthright to belong, be welcomed, and tell their own stories of their past, present, and future selves. Talibah graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre and earned her Masters in Conflict Transformation at The Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She crafts and tends spaces for trauma healing with a racial justice lens on the level of self, community, and culture using restorative justice, circle processes, poetry, music, dance, history, and lived experience. Talibah is also a lecturer at The Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at EMU, where she created a course entitled “Re-imagining Identity” that examines the intersections of identity, story-telling, dignity, and the arts; in this course she created safe spaces for student-teachers to explore the complexities of identity as it relates to oneself and others. What started as a fun way to get out of the house during lockdown soon evolved into a community of over sixty people looking to make a difference. In 2020, Chad Bennett, Aquil Jannah, and Chris Harvell put together a Fathers Day ride consisting of just fourteen people riding eighteen miles. What they found was something far greater. With the spark of an idea and a passion for the camaraderie that cycling creates, they founded Black Watts—a group of cyclists that would work to help make cycling accessible to as many people as possible. From the start, Black Watts would be more than just a cycling club. It would be a group of dedicated husbands and fathers that would work to subvert stereotypes and improve mental health and wellbeing for black fathers and families through cycling. In this episode, Chad, Aquil, and Chris join us to discuss the mission of Black Watts and the difference they're making in their community. Though it started as a club for husbands and fathers, they're determined to make Black Watts an “everybody” group. Chef tabasqueño y único promotor de la cocina de su estado natal. En el 2000 se graduó del Colegio Superior de Gastronomía en la Ciudad de México donde fue recocido como el alumno más destacado de la novena generación de licenciados en Gastronomía. En 2001 fue contratado como chef de cocina en el restaurante de especialidades Bouganvillas, del hotel Hyattt Regency, en Villahermosa. En 2004 hizo una estadía profesional en Le Centre de Formation d'Alain Ducasse, con el chef Alain Ducasse, en Argenteuil, París. Posteriormente viajó a la India para la apertura de un restaurante de cocina mexicana en el Hyatt Regency de Nueva Dehli, además de ser invitado para la realización de festivales gastronómicos en hoteles de la misma cadena en Europa. En 2005 abrió como chef ejecutivo y copropietario el restaurante de cocina tabasqueña contemporánea Ló, cocina de autor, en cuyas instalaciones impartía el taller Cocina sin complicaciones. Siete años después, emprendió un nuevo proyecto, el restaurante La Fisheria en Houston, Texas, especializado en cocina mexicana del mar; del cual actualmente existen dos sucursales más, una en Playa del Carmen y otra en Villahermosa. Se ha desempeñado como conductor de sus propios programas de televisión: El toque de Aquiles, Aquilísimo y Motochefs, transmitidos por la cadena Fox en toda Latinoamérica. Talibah Aquil MA '19 (conflict transformation) talks about her first journey to her ancestral home, Ghana; the captivating performance art capstone that was borne of that experience; and her calling as a bridge between the North American and African continents. Aquil first decided to travel to Ghana after research through ancestry.com revealed that she had more ancestors from there than any other African country. For her capstone project to her graduate studies at the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, she spent three weeks there, interviewing Black Americans and others of the African diaspora who had returned to their homeland about how those experiences shaped their identities. Aquil used those stories to create "Ghana, Remember Me," a poetry, dance, and music performance that speaks on healing historical trauma within the African diaspora community. The project brought together her experiences and a diverse skill set: A graduate of Howard University with a BA in musical theater, Aquil toured with a professional dance troupe after college.Performing "Ghana, Remember Me" "brought to my attention how many people really need spaces to talk about identity … and the complexities of it," she said. That work has helped Aquil face the present as well as her history. "Something about me connecting to the root of my identity gave me such power that when I came back to the States, it was almost like I was prepared to endure all of the racial chaos that was happening in America, because I knew where I came from," she said. "I saw the power of my people and it gave me strength. It gave me strength. It didn't take away the pain, but it gave me strength to endure."She recalled a feeling of homecoming, even on her first trip to Ghana. "Your cells remember … the body knows," Aquil said. Aquil moved to Ghana last year, and lives in the capital city of Accra. "I knew in my spirit that I was supposed to be in Ghana and, again – not knowing the puzzle pieces, just like my journey at CJP – I knew that I was supposed to be here. And listening to that intuition, I'm so grateful because it has been wonderful," she said.Aquil is now a lecturer at CJP, where she introduced a course titled "Re-imagining Identity" that examines the intersections of identity, storytelling, dignity, and the arts. In that same vein of re-imagination, she is also developing an organization called "We Are Magic.""The goal is to bring diaspora people of color to Ghana – to connect, to history, to identity, and to heal from historical trauma," Aquil explained. "I want to do this at a little to no cost for them. I want to build a place where folks can stay and it be a resting place, a restorative place in Ghana."

Today I sit down with a former Olympic rower who plays double duty in his day job at Hydrow as both athlete and software engineer - Aquil Abdullah. Even before we get started I knew Aquil was going to be a really fun guy to hang out with and he didn't disappoint - starting our conversation after a day of skiing with his family his energy bursts through the screen. As we get going I have to interject my own enthusiasm for seeing that his daughter is in martial arts before we move on to talk about how it's possible anybody gets into rowing in the first place. Aquil was originally a Football and Track & Field guy - a classic combination. His reason for rowing was entirely selfish, but it ended up being a fateful decision which would eventually lead him to the Olympic stadium. He tells me about the obvious - the lack of accessibility to rowing for a lot of people and his initiatives to make it more accessible to anyone. I ask Aquil about his Olympic journey and his path was a wild ride including time spent sleeping on a Motel floor. After it was time for him to retired Aquil found his way through the software engineering world to eventually end up in his unique position at Hydrow - a company that makes rowing equipment with social connectivity. Because he failed to qualify for the 2000 Olympics and came back to qualify in 2004 - Aquil is the perfect person to answer my question for this season: How do you stay motivated after failiing to reach a goal?

The first African-American male to represent the US at the Summer Olympics in the sport of rowing.  Aquil Abdullah has been “the first” and “the only” for most of his time in the sport of rowing. The only Black kid on his rowing team throughout high school and college. The first Black man to win the Diamond Sculls race at the Henley Regatta and the first to qualify for the Olympics. Aquil signed up for rowing because he wanted to “goof-off” during the last semester of his senior year at Woodrow Wilson High School, the only public school in DC with a rowing program. He quickly realized that rowing was HARD and he enjoyed the challenge. In just a few short months he made it onto the Varsity boat. He got the attention of the George Washington University Rowing coach setting in motion a journey that led him to the Olympics.  But not without grit, hard work, and hustle. Aquil Abdullah became the first Black man to represent the United States at an Olympic rowing event when he qualified in the M2x in 2004. We paired him with Olympic hopeful John Olbrys who has his sights on the 2021 Olympic trials. Both have deep roots in the Washington, D.C. region.  Aquil's path to the Olympics started at Woodrow Wilson high school and an offer of a rowing scholarship (and his mother's influence) brought him to George Washington University. He now lives with his family in Boston, and is working to make the sport more inclusive through several initiatives. In 2019, Aquil joined Hydrow as a featured athlete. Olympic hopeful John Olbrys learned to row in high school, and found fit rowing into his crammed schedule at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He is currently serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and training for the Tokyo Olympic trials. When the context is changing the way leaders behave and execute changes. The basic foundation of leadership-- concern for people, empathy, connectivity, communication-- these are static.These don't really change. Depending on the scenario respective leadership qualities are highlighted.  Today what comes to the forefront, based on interactions and observations, is empowerment. This will come into play in leadership hugely. Teams will be working in small numbers and independently. In such a scenario leaders will not lead, they will only become facilitators and research providers. This is not a type of role that many leaders will relish. Leaders want to be in charge. They want to direct people.  We have eulogised participative leadership and democratic leadership and consensus building leadership. Whilst these are great, there is a time and place for these styles to be in operation. In a crisis situation leadership needs to be authoritative and take charge. At other times providing a direction helps.  Given that we are heading towards small teams working independently, leadership needs to provide clear direction on the task, clarity on performance measurement and then monitoring how the individuals, in a team, are managing and performing and providing them the safety net of interaction and guidance. Today, in the post-pandemic stage, the ask from leaders is to ensure survival of the business and turnarounds, as maybe applicable. What this does is it removes the facility of time for leaders to build up interaction and understanding with teams. This is a natural progression given the ask of the hour. Leaders need to be able to gauge this requirement. It's important to be able to know what is a priority for the business and direct on the basis of that. In doing this another aspect that comes into the picture is the collaborative skill of the leader. Looking at how Google & Amazon collaborated during the pandemic, it clearly establishes that there is no permanent rival or competitor. This brings to front that leaders will have to have the ability to adapt and collaborate as the situation demands.  Which will bring up a new skill-- crisis intelligence skill. How fast can you gather up information and connect the dots together and stop the ball rolling. Earlier crisis management used to be reactive where leadership is concerned. Now what becomes important in leadership is being able to see a trend or pattern and prevent a crisis from occurring. Doing this would involve adapting to the digital landscape and being able to read the right data. All of this leads to a whole new set of skills being required in leadership. This is not just for the top of the pyramid i.e. the C-level, it includes functional leaders throughout the organizational hierarchy. In order to have this in play the Human Resource function will have to have better understanding of the business first, rather than its HR functions.  Why this is so is because there is no more long-term planning. Given the current scenario everything has gone short-term. That makes is necessary for the HR function to collaboratively partner the line managers and work together in terms of the human resource required for business goal achievement within a limited period of time. The only way to tackle uncertainty is by being proactive. Whilst all around lay-offs are appearing it's critical for businesses to keep an eye on the skill-sets required to rebound. It's not just about surviving but also being able to have the resources to bounce back. To do that leaders will have to become and be agile and think in short-steps.

#012 - Nowadays, Aquil Abdullah is a known athlete for the Hydrow indoor rowing machine. Before that, he was the first African-American rower to qualify for the Summer Olympics, the first African-American rower to win the Diamon Sculls race at Henley Royal Regatta in 2000, and first African-American rower to win a national championship in the single sculls in 1996. "Sur les traces des origines de l’Eglise en Europe", c’est le thème du pèlerinage qui a conduit une quinzaine de pèlerins du diocèse de Lyon en Italie du 12 au 19 mai 2019. Accompagnés par le père François Cristin, directeur des pèlerinages du diocèse de Lyon, ils se sont rendus notamment à Venise, Padoue, et Ravenne. L’occasion d’admirer les magnifiques basiliques, les fresques et les mosaïques de ces lieux ancestraux. Leurs pas les ont conduit en Aquilée dans la région du Frioul-Vénétie julienne, pour visiter la magnifique basilique patriarcale datant du 12ème siècle. Un centre spirituel qui a joué un rôle essentiel dans l’évangélisation d’une grande partie de l’Europe centrale au début du Moyen Âge. Ses vestiges les plus anciens remontent au quatrième siècle et elle est inscrite avec sa zone archéologique sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’humanité par L'UNESCO. Les pèlerins se sont rendus en bateau à Venise pour admirer la basilique Saint-Marc et ses mosaïques à feuilles d’or éblouissantes. Elle retrace les nombreuses histoires de la Bible. Une véritable "bande dessinée antique à ciel ouvert!" se sont exclamés les pèlerins. Une visite a marqué les esprits: celle de l'île San Lazzaro sur la lagune vénitienne, qui abrite les racines du peuple arménien avec notamment une magnifique bibliothèque et de multiples objets anciens. La basilique Saint Antoine de Padoue a ouvert ses portes aux pèlerins après la visite de la basilique Sainte Justine où repose l'évangéliste Saint Luc. Saint Antoine de Padoue est encore beaucoup invoqué et de nombreux ex-votos témoignent de la reconnaissance des fidèles pour ses miracles. Le pèlerinage s’est terminé en beauté avec la visite de l’abbaye de Pomposa dont les origines remontent au sixième siècle après Jésus-Christ et Saint Apollinaire in Classe autrefois située sur le port de Classe qui s'est éloigné aujourd'hui de 5 kilomètres. Les mosaïques de Saint Apollinaire le Neuf, de San Vitale et du mausolée de Galla Placidia, une impératrice du 5ème siècle, témoignent de la magnificence des origines de l’Eglise en Italie. Ce pèlerinage a permis aux pèlerins d'étendre leurs connaissances sur les racines chrétiennes de l’Europe. Il leur a donné de la perspective et des fondements pour mieux comprendre comment s'est tissée l’Europe d’aujourd’hui. Les pèlerins sont rentrés chez eux enthousiasmés par toutes ces merveilles et motivés pour poursuivre leur découverte des racines chrétiennes de l’Europe.

LT 104 | Aquil Abdullah - A Midweight's Journey Subscribe & Review on : Apple Podcasts | Stitcher Aquil H. Abdullah won four letters in men’s rowing at GW from 1992-96. Aquil narrowly missed qualifying for the 2000 Summer Olympics at Sydney by .33 of a second. After losing in the 2000 Olympic Trials, Abdullah considered retiring from the sport. Instead, he resumed training, competed again and won the elite Diamond Sculls race at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-the Thames in London in 2000. He continued to train in the lead up to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and would compete in the Men's Double Scull event with Henry Nuzum. so.and in 2004 became the first African American man on the United States Olympic rowing team. Abdullah, the second men’s rower elected to the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame, came to GW from nearby Wilson High School in Northwest Washington after starring as a 6-foot-1, 185-pound wide receiver on the Wilson football team. But he had started rowing as a high school senior and in 1992 accepted a rowing scholarship at George Washington where he majored in physics.
