Originally published July 19, 2019In 2011, Facebook had begun to focus its efforts on mobile development. Mobile phones did not have access to reliable, high bandwidth connections, and the Facebook engineering team needed to find a solution to improve the request latency between mobile clients and the backend Facebook infrastructure. One source of latency was recursive data fetching. If a mobile application client made a request to the backend for newsfeed, the backend API would return the newsfeed, but some components of that feed would require additional requests to the backend. In practice, this might result in a newsfeed loading partially on a phone, but having a delayed loading time for the comments of a newsfeed item.GraphQL is a solution that came out of this problem of recursive data fetching. A GraphQL server provides middleware to aggregate all of the necessary information to serve a complete request. GraphQL connects to backend data sources and federates the frontend request across these different data sources.GraphQL was open sourced in 2015, and has found many use cases in addition to simplifying backend data fetching for mobile clients. Today, GraphQL is used by PayPal, Shopify, Twitter, and hundreds of other companies.Lee Byron is the co-creator of GraphQL and he joins the show to tell the story of GraphQL, and how it fit into Facebook's shift to mobile.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | December 22, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from Luke 2:15-35. In these verses, Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the Temple for dedication. Simeon greets the parents and gives them a warning of how Jesus will divide Israel and expose the hearts of many people. This story reminds us that Jesus came to bring peace, but the path to peace includes tribulation and discomfort.

Bush in 2002 to serve as the 15th director of the NIH. Join us to hear how his fearless and collaborative leadership style multi-disciplinary approach and out of the box thinking has secured his role in history.
No matter how much we grow in life and in business, there will always be things that trigger that “small” version of you. You know, the you that felt scared once upon a time? The you that preferred to stay safe and hidden? You know, THAT earlier version of the stronger you. So today, my “people pleaser” buttons got pushed. And when that happens I typically react in one of two ways. 1. I over-compensate to please the people. 2. I rebel and refuse to care whether or not the people are pleased. Today it was about my kids, not my business, so I found myself swinging wildly between the two options. Why did it matter? We made the decision recently to home educate our kids. For lots of really valid reasons after lots of effort, stress, and tears (mostly mine) trialling other options. And today was the day that we were to meet with someone very lovely from the education department. The aim was to see if we need any support, brainstorm any issues we’ve faced, that sort of thing. Even though the goal was support, my inner people-pleaser firmly smashed the AM I GOOD ENOUGH alarm, and it was ringing loudly in my ears! I’m guessing you’ll recognise that feeling. Because you’re a hard-working, conscientious, goal-driven, vulnerable, risk-taker too. What are my strategies for dealing with situations like this? 1. Acknowledge it - “Oh there you are, pesky voice that I’ve not heard in a while” 2. Don’t judge it - “Hm, this is probably pretty normal for home educators at this stage of the journey.” 3. Get busy - “How about you focus on what you can control (whether there are any undies lying around the house) rather than the things you can’t (what others think of me). You could apply this to business so easily. Every time someone who’s opinion you respect has an “opinion” about your business. Every time someone chooses another business to work with instead of yours. Every time a team member decides it’s time to move on. Every time you get one of those “interesting comments” on social media. We all face this need for approval in various ways, especially when we are business owners. All our vulnerabilities come to the fore, right? I think I’m almost as sensitive about my business (my third “baby”) as I am about my kids sometimes. Because really, it’s all about being “good enough”, isn’t it? So, here’s a word to the wise: YOU. ARE. GOOD. ENOUGH. And I absolutely have faith in you. Much love, Tess x p.s. Lyell Walker | December 15, 2019In this message, Lyell teaches from Luke 1-2 and Jeremiah 29. He shows how Israel was instructed to wait for God’s promise of salvation, but the waiting caused the people to form a different idea of salvation. Israel was expecting God to save them as a king who defeated Rome; they were not ready for a baby in a manger who came to conquer sin. This message reminds us that believing in God is not equal to placing your hope in God. This advent we should examine our lives and place all of our hope in God, not this world.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | November 24, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Corinthians 15-16. In these chapters, Paul reminds us that our identity is in Christ, and the cornerstone of that identity is the resurrection of Jesus. Without the power of resurrection, everything we believe as Christians is pointless. The reality that Jesus defeated the greatest enemy, death, gives us hope in a better world. God has the power to bring the dead back to life and transform our lives.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | November 17, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Corinthians 12-14. In these chapters, Paul instructs the Corinthian church about spiritual gifts and how to exercise them in the corporate worship gathering. He encourages them to use love as a guide for using gifts in corporate worship and to prefer using gifts that edify the most amount of people. These chapters guide our use of spiritual gifts as well and remind us to live in a way that is dependent on the Spirit of God and not our natural abilities.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | November 10, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Corinthians 10-11. In these chapters, Paul continues to answer the church's questions about living a life of obedience to Jesus. He explains the difference between buying meat sacrificed to idols and participating in idol worship ceremonies. He cautions Christians to use their freedom for the good of God's kingdom rather than personal fulfillment, and he corrects the church's mishandling of communion. While some of these issues are not relevant to our lives as Christians today, the principles Paul explains are a benefit to us.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | November 3, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Corinthians 8-9. In these chapters, Paul continues to respond to the church's questions about living out their faith. Specifically, can a Christian eat meat that was sacrificed to idols? Paul’s response helps the church ask a better question; should a Christian eat meat that was sacrificed to idols. Technically, a Christian has the right to eat whatever they want, but just because we have the freedom to do something doesn’t mean we should take the liberty to do so. Paul’s answer helps us understand how to think about issues of maturity in the church and how we should treat other believers who act immature.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | October 20, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Corinthians 3-4. In these chapters, Paul continues to correct this young church about treating leaders like celebrities. Paul instructs the church that leaders are more like waiters at a restaurant, contractors building a home, masters of a house, or fathers. This was an important message for the church in Corinth, and it is an essential message for us today. Leadership is about serving God’s people and managing God’s resources, not being served and hoarding resources for personal wealth.

In this conversation, he reveals why listening is so critical to being a leader and building a team, why it is important to have a council of advisors, and how he gives back to the profession.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | October 13, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Corinthians 1-2. The church in Corinth has started comparing teachers and baptisms and treating leaders in the church like celebrities. Paul reminds them that this is not how he taught them to live as new Christians. Their decisions to embrace this celebrity culture is a sign that they are living ungodly lives and should repent. This message reminds us that in God’s family, there are no celebrities, only servants.
Preston Scott | October 6, 2019In this message, Preston teaches from 2 Kings 5. In this passage, the prophet told Naaman the leper that he could be healed if he went into the Jordan river seven times. This story shows us that Naaman’s pride had to be washed away with his leprosy and the prophet’s servant needed to be cleansed of a desire for possessions. We should use this story to examine our hearts for the sins of pride and possessions as well.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | September 29, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches about worship from Revelation 21. In this chapter, Jesus gives John a vision of the new heaven and new earth. This is where Christian’s will treasure Jesus above all else for the rest of eternity. John tells us that sin, death, sickness, sorrow, weak leadership, injustice, and pain will be wiped away, and we will see Jesus face-to-face. The early church worshiped Jesus with anticipation of the new kingdom, and our prayer is that we live with expectation too.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | September 15, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches about worship from Hebrews 10, Acts 15, and Ephesians 2. In these chapters, Christians are encouraged to gather regularly and worship Jesus together. This stirs us in love, good works, and encouragement. When we gather, we are also encouraged to use singing as a way to treasure Jesus above this world. While we sing, we are encouraged to show outward expressions of worship like shouting with joy, lifting our hands, bowing down on our knees, playing instruments, and dancing. This message is designed to give our church a Biblical foundation for corporate worship and invite everyone to participate.

Show Notes from the episode include:Quote of the episode by John Maxwell: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”Dean introduces the podcast as one that is about the listener not him. He wants listeners to have one of each of these moments in each episode:An ‘aha’ moment that he likens to a Google searchA Bam moment that Dean describes as wow that makes senseA “Kaboom” moment where one not only “gets’ it but sees how to “do” itThe Art of Intentionality & The Business of Leadership – is understanding both the art and act of being intentional in your daily leadership journey. Becoming intentional means becoming wise about the business of leadership. This means that you develop a business acumen about your job and leadership.Dean ends the show with a No B.S. Tip of the Week on Leadership where he challenges listeners to take one small step to self-improvement this next week. Pick one area of your leadership where you need to improve or “level up” then use a journal or notepad to “jot” down daily what you did to improve. Do this consistently for a week and see if you aren’t consciously better by intentionally focusing on that area for improvement. Remember that being intentional requires discipline, determination and focus

Pastor Marshall Ochs | September 8, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches about worship from John 4 and Acts 16. In these chapters, Jesus shows that worship is not restricted to a location or specific posture, and Paul experiences a miracle in prison while he uses music to worship Jesus. These stories remind us that worship is not something that happens when you attend a church building. Worship is ascribing worth to Jesus, with your everyday life and circumstances, to reflect the awe of God in a broken world.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | September 1, 2019In this new message series, Pastor Marshall teaches about the history of Biblical worship music and its importance in the local church. This week, we study 2 Samuel 6 and 1 Chronicles 15. In these chapters, David brought the ark of the covenant back to Jerusalem and established certain Levites as worship leaders. This move by David created a new worship culture that impacted Israel, the early church, and our church today.

Recreate Church, Pastor Michael Shockley--Service, Sunday, August 25, 2019In today's lesson, Pastor Michael expands upon the theme he has been covering for the past few weeks, "Lifesavers". In this message, it's all about grace being greater than fairness.Today's verses are found in Acts 16:22-24 and Romans 5:8
Pastor Marshall Ochs | August 25, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Samuel 15-16. Saul refused to obey God on multiple occasions, so God asked Samuel to anoint a new king over Israel. This new king was a boy named David, and his heart was humble. These chapters show us how David’s character was greater than Saul’s, but David was still a man prone to make mistakes. God has a track record of using ordinary men like David and Samuel, to accomplish unbelievable things for God’s glory. This story reminds us that God is still in the business of calling ordinary people to join the work of building His kingdom. God uses people like you and me to accomplish significant things despite our weaknesses.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | August 18, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Samuel 11-15. Israel had a new king named Saul. This new king had a few outward victories, but his heart was a failure. Saul had an issue obeying God. Samuel would give specific instructions to Saul on how to obey God, and Saul would ignore them or obey only half of the commands. Over time, this eroded the character of God in the eyes of Israel and permitted everyone to ignore His commandments. The life of Saul reminds us that God defines obedience, and we are ambassadors of His kingdom and character.
August 15, 2019In this episode, Rasu B. Shrestha, MD, MBA, Chief Strategy Officer and executive vice president of Atrium Health, shares his leadership journey from clinical practice to informatics to business. He discusses what it was like growing up in Kathmandu, Nepal, his medical training at CCS University in India followed by residency and fellowship at the University of London and why he decided to pursue an MBA. You will learn how he transitioned into radiology informatics and became a catalyst in transforming the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center into a more patient-focused and economically sustainable system, what led him to Atrium Health, and how he uses Twitter to inspire.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | August 11, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches from 1 Samuel 8-10. Israel was tired of the judges ruling the nation, and they asked Samuel to anoint a king for them. This request revealed their lack of faith in God, but God answered their prayer by choosing Saul. Saul was from a wealthy family, had good looks, and was transformed with God’s power to rule. However, even the best man Israel had to offer became a lousy king. This story reminds us that any king besides Jesus will ultimately enslave us and rob our freedoms. Only Jesus came to rule His people through servanthood and sacrifice.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | July 28, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall finishes our series by teaching through 1 Samuel 1-3. These chapters tell the story of the final judges of Israel, Eli, and Samuel. Eli was a priest/judge that had a wicked family, and Samuel was a prophet/judge that was born to a woman named Hannah. Hannah couldn’t have children, but she prayed for God to intervene. God gave her a son, and Hannah dedicated him to the Lord as a young boy. The faith of Hannah and the humility of Samuel are a bright light in the time of the Judges. Their testimony reminds us that God loves to use our weakness to bring significant changes in the world, and we should pray for God to use us as well.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | July 21, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 19-21. These chapters tell the story of an unrighteous Levite, his concubine, and the Battle of Gibeah. In these final chapters of Judges, Israel wandered very far from God and redefined right and wrong in their own eyes. This resulted in adopting the value system from cultures around them and committing the worst kinds of sexual violence and murder. We study these stories because we weep with the victims, but also to examine our own heart. If we see areas in our life where we think like the Hebrews in Judges, we are no longer changed by God; we are changing God to fit our preferences.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | July 14, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 17-18. These chapters tell the story of a man named Micah, a Levite, and the Israelite tribe of Dan. Micah’s mother pays a silversmith to form an image of God that her son uses as idol worship in his home. Micah hires a Levite to affirm his idolatrous lifestyle and convinces himself that God is pleased with his choices. The tribe of Dan hires the Levite, who is the grandson of Moses, to become their personal priest, and they steal the idols from Micah’s home. Everyone in this story is convinced they are pleasing God, but none of them are obeying God. This story reminds us that if we reform God into an image that we find appealing, we will ultimately serve a God that does not exist.

Pastor Marshall Ochs | July 7, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 15-16. These chapters continue the story of Samson and how God used him to drive a wedge between Israel and the Philistines. Even though God used Samson, Samson did not practice self-control or obedience in his personal life. This lifestyle allowed him to excel in the gifts that God gave him, but remain shallow in his character and spiritual maturity. This story reminds us that if we follow Samson’s example of compromise, we will stop our spiritual growth and remain immature in the Kingdom of God.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | June 30, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 13-14. This story follows the Hebrew judge named Samson. An angel told Samson’s parents to raise him as a Nazarite, and God would use him to overcome the Philistines. However, Samson had self-control issues and a desire to chase what was pleasing to his eyes. Even though Samson was weak, God still used him to drive a wedge between Israel and the Philistines. This story reminds us that our life choices may seem right in our own eyes, but God has a different standard. It also teaches us that even though God uses you, it does not mean He is pleased with you.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | June 23, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 10-12. This story follows a Hebrew judge named Jephthah. He was an outcast from his family and home, but God anointed him to bring judgment on Israel’s enemies. However, Jephthah had a warped theology of God and made a foolish vow before entering into battle. This vow cost him dearly, and it reminds us to let the Bible shape our theology rather than the culture around us.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | June 16, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 8-9. This story takes place after Gideon defeats the Midianites with only 300 men. Gideon began to lose sight of God, killed the elders in a nearby city, and built a golden ephod that turned into an idol. Gideon’s son, Abimelech, killed 70 of his brothers and burned the city of Shechem to the ground. These stories remind us that we must follow God in complete obedience, so we don’t drift from God at the end of our life. Gideon also reminds us of how important it is for parents to model the behavior they want to see in their children.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | June 9, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 6-7. This story takes place after Israel rebelled against God, and the Midianites overtook them. Israel cried to God for help, and He sent a prophet to remind them about their covenant. He then raised a new judge named Gideon. This story teaches us about God’s faithfulness, our weakness, and the difference between regret and repentance.
Pastor Marshall Ochs | June 2, 2019In this message, Pastor Marshall teaches through Judges 1-5. This story takes place after Israel entered the Promised Land, and Joshua died. God commanded Israel to eliminate the evil tribes inhabiting the land, but Israel decided to disobey. They built homes, planted gardens, and ignored the commandments of God. Because of this disobedience, they continually turned back to sin and cried out to God for salvation. In these five chapters, salvation came in the form of a Judge named Ehud and Deborah. As we study the scripture, reflect on how the choices of Israel mirror our choices in our Christian walk. Jesus asks us to obey Him, but we often only follow part of His commands and ignore others. This attitude of partial obedience is no obedience at all, and it leads us back to a life of hardship and slavery to sin.

Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of women in the U.S. – in fact, every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. learns she has lung cancer. The truth is, anyone can get lung cancer, and no one deserves it. For the fifth year the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE is uniting lung cancer survivors and their loved ones across the country to stand together in an effort to defeat lung cancer during National Women’s Lung Health Week. It’s estimated that lung cancer will represent close to 1 in 4 female cancer deaths in 2019In the last 40 years, the rate of women dying from lung cancer has increased 79%Close to half of all women diagnosed with lung cancer will not even survive one year, and the five-year survival rate for women with lung cancer is only one in five.Smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer, but other causes include exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, air pollution and asbestos. LUNG FORCE, in partnership with CVS Health, has made significant inroads in the effort to defeat lung cancer over the past five years, including: Helped to secure a 69% increase in lung cancer research funding at the National Institutes of HealthSuccessfully advocated for Medicare coverage of lung cancer screening for 8 million high-risk adultsSuccessfully advocated to increase the legal age to purchase tobacco to 21 in 5 states and the District of Columbia While much has been done to enlighten the public about this disease, more help is needed to fight for innovations in medical research, better treatments and new methods of early detection for lung cancer. join Dr. Andrea McKee, Scientific Advisory Committee Member and Medical Spokesperson for the American Lung Association along with Adrina Meola, LUNG FORCE volunteer and advocate, and dedicated CVS Pharmacy employee.
