fWotD Episode 2704: Lagonda Taraf Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 29 September 2024 is Lagonda Taraf. The Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf is a full-size luxury car that was produced in 2015 and 2016 by the British carmaker Aston Martin under its Lagonda marque. Designed by Marek Reichman and considered "the finest of fast cars" by Aston Martin, the vehicle is based upon the vertical–horizontal platform, which it shares with the DB9 and Rapide. The Taraf debuted in Dubai in 2014, with manufacture commencing in the subsequent year at the facility in Gaydon, Warwickshire. Initially intended for sale exclusively in the Middle Eastern market with a limited run of 100 units, Aston Martin later expanded the car's availability to several other countries and ultimately built 120. The Taraf has a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration time of 4.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 314 km/h (195 mph). The car features Aston Martin's 5.9-litre engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen. At its launch, the Taraf was the most expensive saloon in the world, priced at over US$1 million. Car critics and reviewers mostly appreciated its handling ability but criticised its steep price. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Sunday, 29 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Lagonda Taraf on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Amy.

FOLLOW UP: AGENCY MODEL CLARIFICATION Thank you to all who responded to Andrew's request for more information on how the agency model works for car retails. FEBRUARY 2024 NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURESSMMT has released the new car registration figures for February 2024 and they are the best in 20 years! Which caused us to raise an eyebrow or two. Battery electric cars are up, slightly, but still a long way off the 22% required by the Government mandate. Diesel is down slightly, with plug in hybrids also up a touch, but petrol is up again. Fleet is doing all the lifting and this is worrying the industry who renews their calls for help to incentivise the Private side of things. To read more, click this link to the SMMT article and details. POLESTAR SECURES NEW FUNDINGPolestar are plugging the gap left by Volvo stepping back from funding the EV company, thanks to a loan worth £750 million. According to the company, this will allow them to sell 155,000 vehicles and become cash flow even in 2025. If you wish to read more on this story, click this Autocar link here. US INVESTIGATING CHINESE EV DATA COLLECTIONThe US Government announced that it will be investigating Chinese electric vehicles to ascertain how much, what type of and where they send data. However, as there are so few actual brands allowed into the US this does feel part of the ongoing protectionism being demonstrated in North America. You can find out about this by clicking the link here to an electrive article. FISKER FINANCES UNSUSTAINABLE BUT NISSAN MAY HELPFisker announced how they were not confident they could last to the end of 2024, but a couple of days later it was revealed that they are in talks with Nissan over possible investment. This would give the Japanese company access to an electric pick up platform, which they do not have currently. Click this Reuters article for the original story. For details on the possible Nissan rescue, click this link to an Autocar article. THE POSSIBLE APPLE CAR PROJECT IS APPARENTLY SHUT DOWNReports were all over the internet stating that the secret Apple car project, allegedly called Titan, had been cancelled. But as the company has neither confirmed nor denied this, it is hard to tell if it was real or whether they were looking at specific technologies.

The vintage Lagonda belonging to Society founder Pip Hills played an instrumental part in our whisky club's foundation, carrying the first precious cargo of single casks from Speyside back to his Scotland Street home in Edinburgh to share with friends. In 1990, Pip Hills and his brother-in-law Dick Pountain decided to take a road trip to Prague in the Lagonda, to witness Václav Havel's inauguration as president of the Czech Republic. The magazine The Classic Motoring Review subsequently commissioned Pip and Dick to write a piece about the journey – and how Society whisky helped to make it a success. We asked Pip and Dick to tell us that story in their own words.

A mí me encanta y me parece precioso… 6. Aston Martin Lagonda (1976): ¿Fiabilidad? 10. Chrysler TC by Maserati (1988): ¡No te compliques!

Show #683   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 31st January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HYUNDAI TO DELIVER KONA ELECTRIC IN EUROPE SOONER "Hyundai has announced a “drastic” reduction in delivery times for Kona Electric in Europe. From March the Korean car manufacturer will also produce the electric model in its Czech plant." reports Electrive: "Hyundai thus confirms rumours from the middle of last year. In addition to making the electric cars in Europe, production in Ulsan, South Korea will be increased. In total, Hyundai promises to triple the availability of its Kona Electric (called Kona Elektro in Germany) for customers in Europe. The increased capacity is now to “keep pace with rising demand”, as this has exceeded expectations since the start of sales in 2018."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/30/hyunda-to-deliver-kona-electric-in-europe-sooner/   From PushEVs: "The Hyundai Kona Electric is a hatchback with a WLTP range of 482 km (300 miles) that strongly appeals to the European market. Hyundai could have made it the best selling electric hatchback in Europe last year if it wanted to. However, this year it’ll more difficult to achieve that feat, since it’ll have the competition of the new Renault ZOE, PEUGEOT e-208, Opel Corsa-e and Volkswagen ID. 3. legacy automakers will only increase the production of electric cars to minimal levels, enough to avoid EU emissions fines. We won’t see legacy automakers producing enough electric cars to challenge Tesla until 2022. In 2022 Volkswagen could take the lead with the ID. brand…"   https://pushevs.com/2020/02/01/hyundai-boosts-kona-electric-supply-to-europe/   ASTON MARTIN’S EV PLANS FALL VICTIM TO STROLL RESCUE "Aston Martin's cash lifeline from Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll has a major casualty -- the company’s push into electric cars." according to Automotive News Europe: "The launch of the full-electric Lagonda marque, due in 2022, has been stalled for three years, Aston Martin said Friday, while development of the Rapide E, the main brand’s first electric model, is under review despite being almost complete. The rethink on electrification, a costly technology previously deemed vital to Aston Martin’s future, will see the company switch focus to providing hybrid autos. It’s part of a “reset plan” that will also see unspecified job cuts and a restructuring of sales and marketing operations."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/aston-martins-ev-plans-fall-victim-stroll-rescue   HUMMER WILL RETURN AS A 1,000-HORSEPOWER ELECTRIC VEHICLE "Following months of rumors, General Motors confirmed the return of the Hummer — with an Earth-friendly twist. The name previously attached to gas guzzling SUVs will now adorn an electric car sold under the GMC brand. Set to debut in a Super Bowl ad on Sunday, February 2, the electric Hummer will have specifications that are more supercar than truck." says Digital Trends: "Called the GMC Hummer EV, the reincarnated Hummer will have 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. While a handful of cars — including the Faraday Future FF91 electric SUV — have achieved four-digit horsepower outputs, the Hummer EV will be the undisputed ruler of torque. The Hummer EV will make its first public appearance in a 30-second Super Bowl ad during the second quarter of the big game on Sunday, GMC confirmed. However, the vehicle won’t be fully revealed until May 20"   https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/gmc-hummer-ev-officially-confirmed-with-1000-horsepower/   Jalopnik had their own take on it: First, there’s the Hummer name and brand itself, which is about as anti-environmental as one could imagine. The connotation of “Hummer” has always been actively hostile to any sort of ecological awareness, in a very brutal and almost childishly reactionary way. If people drove hybrid Priuses and EV Leafs as a way to say “love the Earth” via their car, then driving a Hummer said “fuck the Earth.”" This all means that now EVs are just another kind of car in our minds. They don’t need to have their unique traits pointed out, no matter how important those traits may actually be. We’re now in the era where EVs get promoted and advertised and understood with the same delerious irrationality as any other car out there."   https://jalopnik.com/seriously-the-electric-hummer-is-a-total-change-in-how-1841363548   TESLA Q4 STORAGE DEPLOYMENTS AT ALL-TIME HIGH Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) yesterday reported a new quarterly energy storage installation record of 530 MWh, and 54 MW of solar deployments for October-December 2019. " writes Renewables Now: "The fourth-quarter (Q4) total included the first deployments of Tesla’s newest battery storage product, the commercial-scale integrated storage system called Megapack. The company deployed 1.65 GWh of energy storage in 2019, which is more than it installed in all prior years combined.  The Q4 solar deployments were up by 26% quarter-on-quarter but down 26% year-on-year. Tesla said it continued to ramp both SolarglassRoof production and installations, but did not provide specific figures."   https://renewablesnow.com/news/tesla-q4-storage-deployments-at-all-time-high-solar-at-54-mw-685363/   THE SECRET BEHIND ROLLS ROYCE’S E-PLANE When Rolls Royce in December unveiled its new electric plane, it said it would be the fastest electric aircraft, capable of achieving a top speed of 300 mph. It also said the plane will be able to fly from London to Paris on a single charge." according to OilPrice.com: "The ACCEL aircraft has three battery packs that power its three electric motors. Each pack weighs 450 kg and has a capacity of 72 kWh. According to the project manager, Matheu Parr, the best battery cell shape for the aircraft battery pack turned out to be the cylinder. These, Parr told Patel, could hold a lot of energy and could release it quickly at high power. The secret to the weight was the packaging materials: using as little as possible of those and only the lightest-weight. Yet there are some 200 companies working on electric aircraft technology. The promise is big: electric motors require a lot less maintenance than jet fuel engines, which means they are cheaper over their lifetime; they are also, of course, a lot more environmentally friendly."   https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/The-Secret-Behind-Rolls-Royces-E-Plane.html   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   If I could one something extra in 2020 with EV News Daily, what would it be? Show #499   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 13th June 2019. TESLA MODEL 3 SR+ DELIVERIES FOR EUROPE Morten Grove on Twitter forwarded me a note from Greger who said: "Got delivery of European SR+ booked for the 20th now."   TOYOTA WOKE UP IN 2019 TO REALIZE PEOPLE HAD 'SUDDEN' URGE FOR ELECTRIC CARS "Last week, Toyota laid out some ambitious plans for building significantly more all-electric vehicles than it had previously figured on. Half of all of its sales, in fact, by 2025." Automotive News says: "Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi, Toyota’s r&d chief, outlined the road map in a briefing about Toyota’s EV plans. He cited the “sudden surge” in EV popularization in markets around the world for Toyota’s new plan. “Progress has surpassed the target,” Terashi said. “We have entered a new age.” To achieve these plans, Toyota must accelerate EV development, partly in response to increasingly stringent emissions requirements in China and Europe. It plans to start making EVs in China next year on its way to releasing at least 10 battery-powered models worldwide by the early 2020s."   https://jalopnik.com/toyota-woke-up-in-2019-to-realize-people-had-sudden-urg-1835409177   JAGUAR RECALLS OVER 3,000 I-PACE SUVS IN THE US "Jaguar has voluntary recalled its first electric car, the I-Pace, last week over a regenerative braking issue. According to a statement by the US traffic safety authority NHTSA, over 3,000 model year 2019 and 2020 Jaguar I-Pace vehicles will have to be recalled." says Electric Car Reports: "According to Jaguar, there isn’t a problem with the I-Pace in normal operation, hence the non-mandatory nature of the recall. Instead, Jaguar engineers have discovered that if the electrical regenerative brake system fails, there will be an increased delay between when the driver brakes and when the vehicle decelerates. As such, the affected vehicles do not meet the regulated standard for the time to transition brake force to the friction brake system. Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will update the software to reduce the delay. The recall is expected to begin on 1 July."   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/06/jaguar-recalls-over-3000-i-pace-suvs-in-the-us/   HONDA E MORE SPECS REVEALED: HAS 50:50 WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION "Teased earlier this year, Honda’s first production all-electric vehicle is nearing its official reveal, which should happen later this year. To ease the wait, the Japanese company has released new technical details about the model, which will become the first-ever product of the automaker to be built on a dedicated EV platform." reports Motor1.com: "Honda says the architecture has been developed from the ground up with the main goal being offering “a rewarding, responsive driving experience.” To achieve this, the engineers have positioned the 35.5-kWh Lithium-ion battery under the floor centrally within the wheelbase. This smart integration allows for a perfect 50:50 weight balance and a low center of gravity. The Honda e will be powered by its rear wheels, which will be connected to a high-torque electric motor. As for the battery pack, it is water-cooled can be charged by either Type 2 AC connection or a CCS2 DC rapid charger (integrated into the hood) with the latter providing a quick charge of up to 80 percent in 30 minutes. A complete charge of the battery will provide a range of approximately 124 miles (200 kilometers), according to Honda."   https://www.motor1.com/news/354582/honda-e-tech-details-released/   FASTNED SHOWS HOW SOFTWARE UPDATE IMPROVED TESLA MODEL 3 CHARGING "Fastned recently performed charging test of an updated Tesla Model 3 Long Range at one of its 175 kW CCS Combo 2 DC fast chargers in Europe." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Model 3 was able to charge at 130-150 kW between around 10% to over 50% state-of-charge, compared to just 125 kW previously (to less than 50% SOC).   Overall, the higher power should allow saving of a few minutes at the charger per session. Fastned says also that this summer it will enable its first ABB DC fast chargers to charge at 350 kW, which should enable the full potential of the Model 3 at some 190-200 kW peak."   TESLA MODEL 3 CRUSHES AUDI E-TRON IN FAST CHARGING TIMES My favourite writer at CleanTechnica Dr Max Holland writes: "Following up on an analysis we published previously, a recent real-world DC charging test by Bjørn Nyland clearly shows the Tesla Model 3’s significant charging advantage over the Audi e-tron. Even on a CCS charger, which doesn’t take full advantage of the Tesla’s potential, the Model 3 performs much better. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range adds 179 miles (288 km) of highway range in 20 minutes, 61% more than the Audi e-tron’s 111 miles (179 km). says Dr Holland: "Audi has tried to claim that its e-tron has better charging than Tesla’s vehicles, and that’s grossly inaccurate. We’ve dug into this previously, but now we have more real-world data, thanks to Bjorn’s recent testing. This result is on optimal (and currently not very common) 350 kW CCS hardware that puts the Audi in its best light. The Tesla Model 3, on the other hand, is not quite at its best on these CCS chargers (capped at 500 Amps) — its performance on Supercharger V3 stalls is better still. the Tesla can drive for ~2 hours at highway speeds for each 15 minutes of charging (8:1 ratio), whereas the Audi can drive for ~2 hours for each 30 minutes of charging (4:1 ratio)."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/12/sorry-audi-but-tesla-model-3-crushes-audi-e-tron-in-fast-charging-times-charts/   LG CHEM AND GEELY FORM JOINT VENTURE FOR BATTERIES "LG Chem and Geely are forming a joint venture in China for the production of electric car batteries. The plan is to establish a factory that will have an annual production capacity of 10 GWh by the end of 2021 to supply batteries for Geely electric vehicles." says the industry website Electrive: "The South Korean battery giant and China’s largest car manufacturer are each investing $94 million USD in the project. From 2022, Geely’s electric cars will be equipped with energy storage units from the joint venture. While reports all talk of ‘batteries’, it seems clear that the planned factory is a plant for battery cells. In China, currently only electric cars with batteries from local production are eligible for government subsidies – ie. not with South Korean batteries. However, recently the government announced it will be phasing out all electric car subsidies while removing limits on number plates allocated to EVs – both of which will considerably open the market, not just for joint ventures with Chinese companies, but also for foreign companies like Tesla who now have a more even playing field."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/13/lg-chem-and-geely-form-joint-venture-for-batteries/   CHINESE FIRM MAKES INSANE $23 BILLION INVESTMENT IN PRODUCTION OF 1 MILLION EVS/YR AND 500 GWH OF BATTERIES "Evergrande, a Chinese firm believed to be the biggest real estate company in the world and backers of electric vehicle startups like Faraday Future and NEVS, announced a massive $23 billion investment in the production 1 million electric cars and 500 GWh of batteries per year." Wwrites Electrek: "With a valuation at more than $100 billion and revenues of over $40 billion, Evergrande is now looking to expand into electric vehicles. After acquiring large stakes in those electric vehicle companies, Evergrande claims to have “acquired key technologies in the sector” and now plans to launch its own production of electric vehicles in China in a big way. The company announced a massive investment worth 160 billion yuan ($23 billion USD) into three factories in Guangzhou"   One of the commenters says: "The numbers do not make sense. Would be 500kWh per car. Something is off by a factor of 10." Another commenter says: "Chinese numbers are different than ours, their numbers are in increments of 10,000 the way ours are 1,000. They are probably off by a factor of 10, since 50 GWh would be sufficient for 1 million cars (unless they plan on sending 90% of their batteries to grid storage, which seems unlikely)"   https://electrek.co/2019/06/13/chinese-firm-evergrande-electric-cars-batteries/   ASTON MARTIN STARTS PRODUCTION IN ‘HOME OF ELECTRIFICATION’. "Aston Martin has started production at its second plant in the UK. In St. Athan, Wales, pre-series vehicles of the SUV model DBX are now rolling off the production line, where the Lagonda all-electric version should start production in 2022." reports Electrive: "The Welsh plant was named Britain’s “Home of Electrification” last year. Announced in early 2016, the British luxury brand’s second facility (after Gaydon in Warwickshire), is to produce their first all-electric model, the Rapide E, although it will only be offered in a limited edition of 155 units. Production for Aston Martin’s Lagonda electric car brand will start in St. Athan in 2021."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/13/aston-martin-starts-production-in-home-of-electrification/   TWO OIL TANKERS DAMAGED IN SUSPECTED ATTACKS IN GULF REGION "Governments and maritime agencies urged an abundance of caution Thursday for ships operating in the Persian Gulf region after two oil tankers were damaged in suspected attacks near the strategic Strait of Hormuz." reports Reuters Breaking News at the time of recording: Though details of the suspected attack on the ships in the Gulf of Oman off the coast of Iran were still vague, the incident comes amid growing friction between Washington and Tehran in an area already fraught with tension. Attacks on two oil tankers on Thursday left one ablaze and both adrift, shipping firms said, driving oil prices up 4% over worries about Middle East supplies."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/13/two-oil-tankers-damaged-attacks-strait-of-hormuz/       COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #470   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 13th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA MODEL Y PRODUCTION WILL CREATE A BATTERY SHORTAGE "Tesla’s main battery supplier and partner in Gigafactory 1 says that the start of Model Y production next year will result in a battery cell shortage at the factory." according to an Electrek article today: "During Panasonic’s latest earnings report, CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga said that they plan to ramp up to the full 35 GWh this year. After that, the CEO said that they need to talk to Tesla. He said that there’s currently not enough capacity to supply Tesla’s expanding business and especially the upcoming production of the Model Y"   He said "“Batteries will run out if Tesla starts to sell the Model Y and expands its business next year. What will we do then? It’s one of a few topics to discuss with Tesla, including battery [production] in China.”   User jpo234: "Panasonic is losing money from their GF1 investment. They are tightening the screws to get a better deal from Tesla."   User ben says: "Tesla is known for bringing manufacturing in-house. If Panasonic has not performed to musks exacting standards, they're out on future expansions of GF1. Tesla will do it themselves, with new tech (Maxwell) that will be more dense boosting gigafactories theoretical capacity above 135 GW/yr."   https://electrek.co/2019/05/13/tesla-model-y-production-battery-shortage-panasonic/   TESLA OWNERS MAY BE ABLE TO OPT FOR A THIRD-PARTY EXTENDED WARRANTY "As the Tesla fleet grows (and ages), it's helpful to know there are additional options (just in case) to care for an out-of-warranty Model 3, Model S, Model X or Roadster. It turns out that X-Care EV Protection is now offering the nation’s first third-party extended warranty for Tesla owners." says InsideEVs.com today: "X-Care is meant to mirror Tesla’s own extended service agreement it offers customers – it covers nearly everything the automaker’s extended warranty does. While Tesla restricts its own coverage exclusively to customers who buy Tesla vehicles from the automaker, X-Care can be offered by any auto retailer and can be used to cover any Tesla. The warranty, provided by Xcelerate Auto, also fills a gap left open by traditional providers in the industry, who have been reluctant to cover electric vehicles. Without decades of data regarding reliability and repair costs, other companies have interpreted the electric vehicles as too big of a risk."   https://insideevs.com/news/349254/tesla-third-party-extended-warranty/   CEO OF HONDA OUTLINES NEW CHALLENGES Honda Motor Co.’s president and CEO Takahiro Hachigo recently spoke about two of the automaker’s management challenges it will be tackling going forward to meet the rapid changes happening in the global automotive industry. In terms of electrification, Honda is still on track to reach its goal to electrify two-thirds of its global automobile unit sales by 2030. "At Honda, in light of the required infrastructure and how people use automobiles, we believe that hybrid technology is, at this moment, the most effective way for us to comply with CAFE standards. Therefore, we will electrify our products mainly with hybrid technologies. By increasing sales of our hybrid models all around the world, Honda will contribute to the global environment through the improvement of fuel economy.”"   ASTON MARTIN’S FIRST EV MAKES DYNAMIC DEBUT AT MONACO EPRIX "Aston Martin chose the Formula E Monaco ePrix as the setting to provide its first all-electric model its dynamic debut." says carkeys.co.uk: "Piloted by Aston Martin works driver Darren Turner, the model took part in two on-track sessions throughout the day. The twin rear-mounted electric motors produce 604bhp and 950Nm of torque, which makes the new electric Aston Martin the quickest version of the Rapide ever made, and even more so than the 6.0-litre V12 that typically lies underneath the model’s bonnet. Just 155 Rapide Es are being built, as the luxury saloon’s production run draws to a close, as Aston Martin begins to develop its Lagonda brand, which is set to be the firm’s electric subsidiary. Production of the model will start later in the year at Aston Martin Lagonda’s new production facility in St Athan, Wales."   https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/aston-martin-s-first-ev-makes-dynamic-debut-at-monaco-eprix   HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VS. BATTERY ELECTRIC CARS: WHICH ARE BETTER? "While electric cars appear to have the edge in today’s environment, a number of manufacturers are still committed to hydrogen fuel cell cars - meaning that the technology may one day find its place in the motoring world. Green technology news site CleanTechnica claims that hydrogen fuel cell cars are “several years behind battery electric vehicles in terms of innovation”, which is why they’re so expensive to own and run." report The Week: "Given enough time and money, hydrogen vehicles may become the more accessible option for “our kids or grandkids”, the website says. But electric cars are evolving at a rapid rate, too, and more environmentally-friendly battery options may open up in the future.  For now, though, electric cars appear to be the go-to mode of transport for those looking to do their part in cutting emissions."   https://www.theweek.co.uk/electric-cars/101196/hydrogen-fuel-cell-vs-battery-electric-cars-which-are-better   NORWEGIAN AUDI E-TRON CUSTOMERS DELAYED AND FINED "As the delivery rollout of the Audi e-tron begins, reservation holders in Norway have begun to complain about the additional delays that they are facing. One customer attempted to cancel his order, for which he was presented with a fine for breaking contract." says electrive.com: "The customer who reported the fine, had initially been incensed about an additional 6 month waiting period, on top of the existing delay. When he then attempted to cancel his reservation, he was told that to do so, he would have to pay 8% of the value of the vehicle for the inconvenience. Depending on the model variant chosen, this would be a price between $5,920 and $6,800."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/13/audi-e-tron-customers-delayed-and-fined/   VW: HOW ELECTRIC ROADS WORK Zero carbon footprint, quieter vehicles, good driveability and no exhaust emissions. Continuous charging along electric roads has huge potential for heavy transport. On a busy highway, a truck with trailer is approaching a long section with pylons on the right side. The vehicle’s sensor detects that the traffic lane is now equipped with an electric contact line, and the driver pushes a button to raise a pantograph fitted on the cab’s roof. Within seconds, the cab turns almost completely silent: the combustion engine has stopped, and the electrical motor now powers the vehicle.   This is how it works: Finding the eHighway A sensor checks whether the traffic lane is equipped with a contact line. Until now the truck has been powered by the combustion engine. Now, the driver raises the pantograph. Connects to the contact line When connected, the pantograph transfers the energy directly to the electric motor, simultaneously charging the battery. During braking, electricity is generated as the flow of energy is reversed, charging the on-board battery. Disconnects when overtaking   When the truck is overtaking or is at the end of an electrified section, the pantograph lowers itself. The electrical motor continues to run on battery power for as long as possible. After overtaking the driver can return to the eHighway.   SHELL BUILDS HPCS IN GERMANY "Shell is starting to build high power chargers at its gas stations in Germany. This year, the oil company plans to build 50 charging stations across the country, with a total of 100 charging points and a capacity of at least 150 kilowatts. Further charging stations are to follow." according to electrive: "Shell has brought EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg, an utility in Germany’s south, on board as a partner for the charging network initiative. They plan to install high power charging stations with CCS, CHAdeMO and an AC connection (type 2), which will each provide up to 150 kW for up to two vehicles charging simultaneously and up to 300 kW when only one car is charging. According to the media reports, locations in Cologne, Oberhausen and Munich are planned"   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/13/shell-to-build-50-hpcs-before-the-year-is-out/   DAIMLER'S NEXT CEO WILL PUSH ALLIANCES TO CUT COSTS "Daimler will cut development costs of new Mercedes-Benz cars by a significant amount by 2025 and will intensify alliances with rivals as a way to improve margins, Ola Kaellenius, the future chief executive, said on Monday." reports Autoblog today: ""The cost structure of the electric car is above that of the combustion engine car. We are working hard on lowering this," Kaellenius, who is due to take over from Dieter Zetsche after the company's annual general meeting on May 22, said. Daimler is also relying on increasing economies of scale for electric car batteries as a way to drive down costs. It is also working to cut the use of expensive raw materials from electric car batteries. The carmaker wants to reduce the use of cobalt in electric car batteries."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/13/daimler-ceo-alliance-ola-kaellenius/     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #446   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   EVGO INSTALLS BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEMS ACROSS EV CHARGING NETWORK "[EVgo] announced that it has completed or has in construction 14 battery storage systems located at 11 fast charging stations." reports Petrol Plaza website: "This is the largest deployment of battery storage systems at public fast charging stations in the U.S. Battery storage systems can offer relief to demand charge rate structures that inhibit fast charging deployment and EV adoption, accoring to the company. Although EV fast charging stations do not always require a grid upgrade, as station sizes and power rating increase, energy storage will become an important tool, offering load balancing and mitigating distribution grid upgrade costs. With more than 1,100 fast chargers in 34 states, EVgo electrified more than 75 million miles for electric vehicle drivers across the country in 2018."   https://www.petrolplaza.com/news/21700   STRICTER CO2 EMISSION STANDARDS FOR CARS AND VANS SIGNED OFF BY THE COUNCIL "The EU is making road transport cleaner by setting strict new carbon dioxide emissions standards for cars and light commercial vehicles. The aim of the regulation adopted by the Council today is to ensure that from 2030 onwards new cars will emit on average 37.5% less CO2 and new vans will emit on average 31% less CO2 compared to 2021 levels. Between 2025 and 2029, both cars and vans will be required to emit 15% less CO2. These are EU-wide fleet targets. The CO2 reduction effort will be distributed among manufacturers on the basis of the average mass of their vehicle fleet."   https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2019/04/15/stricter-co2-emission-standards-for-cars-and-vans-signed-off-by-the-council/   TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 PHASE 1 ENTERS ROOF PAVING STAGE "A recent flyover of Gigafactory 3 has revealed that the upcoming electric car factory continues to follow an incredibly rapid buildout, with the first phase of the project seemingly entering the roof paving stage." according to Simon over at Teslarati: "Compared to previous videos taken of the site, more roof trusses are now in place, and some workers are now paving some areas of the general assembly building’s steel roof structure. More steel foundations appear to have been laid as well, and the framework of what seems to be a multi-story section is currently being built. This pace serves the project well, considering that Shanghai official Chen Mingbo has given the project a May 2019 target date for completion."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-general-assembly-building-roof-paving/   MG EZS ELECTRIC CAR COMING TO AUSTRALIA IN 2020 "MG Motor’s Australian factory distributor has confirmed it will launch a fully electric version of its increasingly popular petrol-fired ZS small SUV during the course of 2020." writes CarAdvice.com.au today: "The Mazda CX-3-sized MG eZS will give the company a rival for the just-launched Hyundai Kona Electric, the Hyundai Ioniq, and the Nissan Leaf in Australia’s fledgling EV market. It will be China’s first EV in Australia, and should be a bit of a marketing coup. The eZS has a 110kW/350Nm electric motor, powered by a 45.6kWh lithium battery pack, with a claimed NEDC driving range of 335km. That’s about 50 per cent less than the long-range Hyundai Kona with its larger 64kWh battery capacity, but thereabouts with the Leaf."   https://www.caradvice.com.au/747869/mg-ezs-electric-car-coming-to-australia-in-2020/   EV SCARE CAMPAIGN 'FLIES IN FACE OF FACT' Staying in Australia "A toxic scare campaign surrounding electric vehicles in the first week of the federal election campaign “flies in the face of fact” and risks seeing Australia fall even further behind the rest of the world, according to the chair of a senate inquiry into the technology." says website InnovationAus.com.au today: "Following the unveiling of Labor’s electric vehicle policy package, which included a target for half of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, a series of government ministers launched a widespread scare campaign against the policies. But Labor’s 50 percent target is just for new car sales, not used and second hand sales, and would lead to about 15 percent of Australia’s entire car fleet being electric by 2030." Prime Minister Scott Morrison: "“I’ll tell you what, it’s not going to tow your trailer. It’s not going to tow your boat. It’s not going to get you out to your favourite camping spot with your family,”   https://www.innovationaus.com/2019/04/EV-scare-campaign-flies-in-face-of-fact   ASTON MARTIN TESTS MARKET FOR HIGH-PRICED EVS WITH RAPIDE E Automotivenews Europe brings us: "Aston Martin is testing the market for very expensive full-electric cars with the Rapide E sedan, which was unveiled on Tuesday at the Shanghai auto show. Aston Martin will build just 155 units of the Rapid E, which will be the automaker's only battery-powered car until the UK automaker revives its Lagonda brand as an all-electric marque early next decade. The Rapid E's driving range of 322 km (200 miles) under Europe’s WLTP testing cycle is short compared with other EVs coming to the market. The upcoming Porsche Taycan has a 500-km (311-mile) range), for example. Aston Martin has countered the Rapide E’s limited range by equipping it with an 800-volt battery system that allows more rapid charging. The sedan can be charged to 80 percent of capacity from empty in 30 minutes. Andy Palmer said Aston Martin customers are not looking for blistering supercar performance, but they are "conscious about what Teslas can achieve."   https://europe.autonews.com/shanghai-auto-show/aston-martin-tests-market-high-priced-evs-rapide-e   IN QUEST FOR ELECTRIC SUPERCARS, ENGINEERS HEAD TO START-UPS Reuters has been tracking where high profile EV talent is going: "Rene-Christopher Wollmann, head of Mercedes-AMG’s 2.75 million euros (£2.38 million) Project One supercar programme, has moved to a job at Automobili Pininfarina in a sign that innovation in high end electric sportscars is shifting towards small start-ups." "Premium or high-performance electric sports cars are equivalent to the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the conventional auto world. These so-called supercars can cost anything from about $100,000 up into the millions of dollars and include Tesla’s upcoming Roadster Founder Series, which will sell for over $200,000 and the Rimac Concept Two, priced in the region of $2 million. The emerging role of start-ups in the development of the premium electric market harks back to an era over a century ago when talented engineers like Gottlieb Daimler and Ferdinand Porsche were able to launch sportscar brands on modest budgets."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-supercar-startups-focus/in-quest-for-electric-supercars-engineers-head-to-start-ups-idUKKCN1RR0GD   IRELAND: ELECTRIFI REBUILDS ELECTRIC CARS WITH TESLA PARTS "The Irish startup Electrifi is investing 50 million euros over the next three years to convert classic luxury cars into electric vehicles using Tesla components. Yet, Electrifi is working on a range of more affordable electric cars for 2020 as well." writes Nora Manthey for electrive.com: "Electrifi though is starting small and will concentrate on converting the most high-end cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin to electric vehicles using motors and batteries from Tesla. Prices will start at a Formula 1 worthy 750,000 euros"   https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/ireland-crowley-carbon-to-build-electric-cars-as-electrifi/   CAR MANUFACTURERS TURN TO ELECTRIFICATION TO TURN THE TIDE IN 2019, "car manufacturers are hoping to spur market development by turning to the electric vehicle market. Electric vehicle shipments are predicted to arrive at 5.15 million in 2019, reaching a YoY growth of 28%. YoY growth of new energy vehicles alone ( excluding hybrid electric vehicles) is expected to hit 51%." says Associated Press today: "Car makers are proactively carrying out development of electric vehicles and speeding up rollouts of new car models in anticipation of global energy-saving and emission-reducing trends, as well as the policies implemented by various countries. Car makers are leaning towards presenting electric vehicles as a brand new product series."   https://www.apnews.com/Business%20Wire/87a55d76420046869be349b89d0b80d0   PLUG AND PLAY: 1980 COMUTA-CAR And finally from BarnFinds.com: "Folks who like cars like this 1980 Comuta-Car are in a league of their own. I know because I’m one of them and I’m at least as unusual as these cars are. This one can be found here on craigslist in Nappanee, Indiana, just southeast of South Bend. The seller is asking $3,300 for this car. "The Comuta-Car, as most of you know, was an upgrade and continuation of the CitiCar with bigger, battery-filled bumpers both front and rear. The cute factor was all but gone once the bumpers became battery storage but at least you weren’t sitting on hoards of batteries under the seat and the range was extended a bit. Another upgrade would be the sliding side windows compared to the snap-out windows on the CitiCar. The seller says that this car has the 48-volt motor and it’s new, and also that it has 8 six-volt batteries so it must be the SV-48 model. A top speed of just under 40 mph and a 40-mile range isn’t much for either category but some owners have upgraded their CitiCars and Comuta-Cars to 1.5 to 2 times the range and 50+ mph"   https://barnfinds.com/plug-and-play-1980-comuta-car/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Trevor in Washington asked me about future shipments of the Model 3's after i reported on the first load to be delivered yesterday. As far as I know, there is a car carrier leaving California around once every 5 days - Glovis Captain (arrived yesterday), Glovis Cosmos, Grand Aurora, CsCC Europ , Glovis Courage. The Morning Cindy is on her on way to Shanghai. If you know more, email me and I’ll pass it on, hello@evnewsdaily.com   MERCEDES-BENZ COULD BE SUPPLYING TESLA WITH ELECTRIC VANS It's always nice when the listeners do the work for me, it means I can kick back and put my feet up! I wish. And Partner of the Podcast Sascha Pallenberg was tweeting this morning about the Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche and something he said about a potential partnership with Tesla. Now it may have been in German but Sascha kindly translated: "Our CEO Dieter Zetsche just confirmed during the annual #Daimler pressconference that #Tesla is interested in our #MercedesBenz eSprinter for their service fleet. Ongoing talks..." @sascha_p   So we're talking about the eSprinter here. Jerome Guillen, Tesla’s President of Automotive, is also former Daimler. On the Tesla earnings call Elon Musk said his focus was ono improving service including Tesla Ranger Service. Most recently I've seen pics of them using Model S's, but this would be a proper electric van. This sounds like a supply deal for Tesla to use Mercedes-Benz vans rather than some sort of collaboration project. The eSprinter has a 55kWh hour pack and 93 miles (150km) of range which might not be enough. Let me remind of you an Elon Musk tweet from 19th November 2018: "Lot on our plate, so it’s either get van gliders (no battery, powertrain or compute tech) from Daimler & produce sooner or do all & produce later. Not a big difference to total vehicles produced either way. Priority list is Model Y, solar roof tiles, pickup, semi, Roadster."   And: "Maybe interesting to work with Daimler/Mercedes on an electric Sprinter. That’s a great van. We will inquire."   TESLA MODEL 3 GETS ANOTHER PRICE REDUCTION "Not long ago, Tesla reduced its prices by $2,000 in an attempt to assist buyers after the U.S. federal tax credit entered its initial sunset phase" reports InsideEVs, and now: "When the Model 3 Mid Range first arrived, it was priced at $46,000. The price dropped recently to $44,000, and now it’s down to $42,900. Tesla is moving closer and closer to that $35,000 price point, and the base model has yet to arrive. As for the rest of the Model 3 lineup, the Long Range Dual Motor is priced at $49,900 and the Performance model now comes in at $60,900. In reply to a question on the above Twitter thread, Musk said Tesla is doing everything it can to get to the $35,000 base Model 3. Elon Musk tweeted that the car starts at “~$35k (after ~$8k of credits & fuel savings).”"   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-price-reduction/   2019 VW PASSAT FACELIFT DEBUTS IN EUROPE WITH PLENTY OF TECH "After Volkswagen gave China an all-new Passat last year and the United States a not-so-new Passat last month, it’s now Europe’s turn to meet the refreshed midsize sedan. The plug-in hybrid Passat GTE (pictured below, on the left) has been updated as well and can now do up to 34 miles (55 kilometers) in pure electric mode per the more realistic WLTP cycle" reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "For the sake of comparison, the pre-facelift Passat GTE only did 31 miles (50 km) using the now defunct NEDC procedure."   https://www.motor1.com/news/304079/2019-vw-passat-europe-reveal/   NEW BMW 7 SERIES PLUG-IN HYBRID LAUNCHES IN SPRING AT £76,815 "BMW has revealed the new plug-in hybrid versions of its 7 Series saloon, which will go on sale in the UK this spring. The luxury limo will be available in a choice of long- and short-wheelbase guises, with prices starting at £76,815." according to James Fossdyke for the UK version of Motor1.com: "That money will buy you the standard-wheelbase 745e xDrive, which combines a 3-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to create a 389 bhp powertrain capable of 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds and a 155-mph top speed. Thanks to a larger battery than found in the old 7 Series hybrid, the new model offers an all-electric range of between 34 and 36 miles despite the new, more stringent economy test. The car also uses the eight-speed automatic gearbox as a generator, taking the energy otherwise wasted during deceleration to recharge the battery and further exploiting its zero-emission potential. In Hybrid mode, the car will do 68 mph on electric power alone, with the petrol engine taking over above that speed, but in Electric mode, that top speed is stretched to 87 mph." Here's the interesting thing about performance - 0-62mph for the fastest version is 5.1 seconds, the Tesla Model S is 3.1 unless you spec Ludicrous mode.   https://uk.motor1.com/news/303916/bmw-7-series-plug-in-hybrid/   BMW iNEXT IN PRODUCTION SPEC MAKES AN UNDERCOVER APPEARANCE IN SWEDEN "Last fall, BMW showed off its iNEXT electric crossover concept packed full of fanciful design and high-tech features. But instead, BMW just released images of the production model undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden." reports Autoblog.com: "The front fascia is more upright and blunt, and the hood is flatter, resulting in a sharper transition between the two. We learned last year that Lagonda’s first two all-electric production vehicles will share a platform with the Aston Martin DBX (itself an SUV), with an electric motor per wheel allowing for full torque-vectoring, and no doubt some impressive on-paper performance figures."   https://www.evo.co.uk/news/22235/lagonda-all-terrain-electric-concept-set-for-geneva-debut   PORSCHE EXPANDS CHARGING SERVICE IN EUROPE TO 49,000 CHARGING POINTS "Porsche is expanding its Porsche Charging Service – launched in May 2018 – to five new countries, which will enable access to more than 49,000 charging points under single contract, through Porsche ID card or smartphone app." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com "“In Germany, the fee for using the Porsche Charging Service is €2.50 per month. The costs for actual charging come on top of this: these depend on the provider as well as the amount of power charged. The prices are shown in detail and also according to power class/charging speed if wished. The app can be used on all mobile devices with iOS or Android operating system. The service is generally available to all drivers of hybrid or electric vehicles. It is not limited to Porsche sports cars. Registration is possible via www.porsche.com/connect-store.”"   https://insideevs.com/porsche-charging-europe-49000-points/   LYFT ADDS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, 'GREEN MODE' TO RIDE-HAILING APP "Your chances of riding in an electric vehicle just went up: Lyft users will soon be able to request a zero-emission or hybrid vehicle directly from the home screen of the app." according to Sasha Lekach for Mashable: "Using the new setting, passengers can request an electric vehicle through the app and get matched with a battery-powered (or hybrid) car for their ride. Lyft says the new feature will be rolled out to other cities after the Seattle pilot."   https://mashable.com/article/lyft-electric-vehicles-green-mode/?europe=true#8OIiWF8YeGqq   DHL EXPANDS GREEN FLEET WITH 63 WORKHORSE ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS DHL is preparing to roll out a new fleet of electric delivery vans that will serve U.S. markets. The fleet of 63 NGEN-1000 electric delivery cargo vans are produced by equipment manufacturer Workhorse Group(WKHS) and are built to be among the safest, most efficient last-mile delivery and work truck systems available. Capable of running up to 100 miles on a charge, the vans have ultra-low floors to reduce physical stress on workers’ knees and back, and a high roof design that maximizes cargo space.   HONDA PARTNERS WITH CATL ON LI-ION EV BATTERIES "Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) signed a cooperation agreement with Honda Motor in Tokyo to cooperate formally to develop electric vehicles for the future market." says Green Car COngress: "Under the agreement, CATL will become Honda’s partner in the field of lithium-ion EV batteries. CATL will guarantee the supply to Honda of about 56 GWh of lithium-ion EV batteries before 2027. CATL currently uses NCM as a core material in its automotive cells; energy density is as high as 240 Wh/kg." Monday 2nd April 2018.  SPECIAL DELIVERY Starting with the Model 3 Owners Club, and a story which definitely isn’t an April Fools! Franz von Holzhausen is the Tesla design supremo and the man responsible for the Model 3. So how amazing would it be to meet him. Well he can go one better than that. He said: ““I was on my way home from work and figured I’d swing by. I love to see the excitement from people like you and share what we’ve created.” The Model 3 buyer said: ““The car was flawless. I inspected every panel gap with a fine toothed comb and couldn’t find a millimeter of misalignment. After reading so many horror stories, I found it hard to believe there were no noticeable defects on the car. I said, “The panel gaps are literally perfect – did you make sure this one came out flawless like this?” He just smiled and said, “Nope, this is the first time I’m seeing this car, but things are always improving.” I continued down the four-page Model 3 delivery checklist another user posted on this forum and everything was absolutely perfect.”   BMW CHARGING BMW is announcing a massive expansion to its charging network in China with plans to install more than 80,000 charging poles in over 100 Chinese cities. The company’s goal is to have these poles up-and-running when its fleet of new electric cars hit the market in the coming years. As of 2017, the German automaker already has more than 65,000 charging poles in more than 90 Chinese cities.   GREENING UP EVS A new report on Green Car Congress points out how EVs, unlike gas cars, get greener as time goes on because of cleaner electricity production. They say: “Future electric vehicles are likely to have roughly 20% lower environmental impacts compared to current vehicles based on technological improvements alone. However, when considering also the future improvement of the electricity sector, these improvements are in the range of 30-70% for baseline and climate policy scenarios. This is an important conclusion that must be considered when making policy in the mobility sector as use of current results as a proxy for future technologies would be highly misleading.”   MAD DASH TO DELIVER MODEL  3S According to a Bloomberg report: “With pressure escalating after one of the worst weeks in its almost 15-year-history, Tesla raced to manufacture and deliver its mission-critical Model 3 sedan to burnish the numbers it’s about to report to rattled investors. Tesla’s Fremont, California, delivery hub was packed with people Saturday evening as the last hours of the quarter drew to a close. Red couches and tall white tables were set up outside, a DJ played music and a truck selling Vietnamese food was on hand. Behind the scenes, a company that’s struggled to figure out how to mass manufacture cars implored workers to get production on track and prove the doubters wrong. Barclays Plc analyst Brian Johnson has warned clients to watch out for a potential “burst rate bear trap,” in which Tesla beats Wall Street’s lowered projections for Model 3 deliveries. He estimates Tesla is producing 1,500 to 1,700 units of the Model 3 each week. We think it’s possible Tesla may have stockpiled batteries amid Fremont downtime, allowing production to be higher in the final week,” Johnson wrote in a report Thursday. “Any such ‘beat’ is unlikely to be sustainable, and questions remain on Tesla’s ability to sustainably reach” its production goals.   NO RISK GOING EV According to Autocar Professional: “"The head of Aston martin said “The Lagonda concept, as you know, will be there to challenge the duopoly of Rolls-Royce and Bentley," says Palmer in an exclusive interview with Autocar Professional. The Lagonda brand has been revived to lead Aston Martin's charge in the electric mobility space. He feels going electric is a "no-risk" strategy to compete against Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the super luxury segment. "Lagonda is going to compete with Rolls-Royce and one of the key attributes of a Rolls-Royce is that it is very quiet. And obviously the electric car is even quieter," says Palmer.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 7th March 2018.   Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel.  Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow.   BENTLEY LUXURY HYBRID But first of all something I teased at the start of the podcast yesterday, as it was being announced, was the first ever electrified Bentley. The Bentayga Hybrid will come with a 3.0 litre petrol engine combined with a plug in hybrid system capable of 31 miles of silent running. Bentley said this was the “worlds’ first luxury hybrid”. Let’s just give Land Rover a call and see if they would class their recent Range Rover Sport Plug In as either luxury or hybrid. I’m thinking they would. The Bentley can be selected to drive in EV mode, or the common Hold mode, should you be driving into one of the urban areas soon to ban or charge a levy for driving diesels, you can hold the charge and opt run on electrons when you need to. Charging is what you would expect for a battery around 10-15kWh, they said it would fully fast charge in 2hr 30mins, although nowhere could I find the size of the battery or the motor. The combined power from the electric motor means it should get 75g/km on the NEDC measurement here in Europe. A reminder that from later this year all cars will have to move to WLTP standard which is much more like real world driving, and is said to be far less flattering on those big engine luxury cars which have been adding small batteries to achieve theoretical low emissions. The Bentayga is coming in the second half of 2018. http://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/18987/bentley-gets-electrified-with-the-new-bentayga-hybrid https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/bentley/bentley-bentayga-hybrid-2018-suv-price-specs-and-release-date/ http://www.evo.co.uk/bentley/bentayga/20890/bentley-bentayga-phev-revealed-at-geneva-bentley-s-suv-goes-hybrid   HONDA AND TOYOTA NOT DOING THE DIESEL DANCE It has been a busy day of statements from car makers, any one of which would be headline news on another day, but the new kept on coming. First I heard that Honda announced they were cutting diesels from their model line ups. And then Toyota popped up in my news feed, as they said they would stop the sales of diesels in Europe and shift all their focus on electric hybrids, from this year. They said it was due to customer reaction and you can see why, with less than 10% of their fleet being diesels, they’re hardly making a sacrifice. However it will not only generate good publicity but add to the pain for other car makers who commit to diesel, and Toyota are said to be one of the only ones who might achieve the strict new EU rules. More on that later on the show. Toyota has sold over 400,000 hybrids in Europe and are committed to soft hybrids rather than plug in. They aren’t expected to market pure BEV’s until at least 2020. In fact their recent TV ads featured charging stations covered in cobwebs, as they actively tried to take aim at those who want to plug in their cars, with campaigns for their luxury Lexus brand saying they charge themselves. Which sounds like you’re stretching the truth about as far as you can. They’re not magical, they just burn fossils https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Toyota-to-phase-out-diesel-cars-in-Europe-starting-this-year   HONDA CONCEPT TO BE MADE Next do you remember the Honda Urban EV Concept unveiled a few months back at the Frankfurt Motor Show? It’s the cirlcle-eyed, tech laden concept with two bench seats for passengers. And now today at Geneva, Honda confirmed “a production version” is coming. Speaking during Honda’s 2018 Geneva motor show press conference, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe, Philip Ross confirmed the news, “A production version of this highly acclaimed concept will be introduced to Europe during late 2019, and in response to the positive feedback to this model, we expect to open order banks for the Urban EV during early 2019.” https://www.just-auto.com/news/geneva-show-honda-confirms-urban-ev-for-europe-in-2019_id181549.aspx   BMW ADD i4 TO THEIR ELECTRIC RANGE Talking of concepts which have been confirmed, BMW said in Geneva the concept they showed off in Frankfurt will be coming. It’s part of a line up of 25 full BEVs or electrified cars. The concept was, what BMW called, the future of e-mobility. Now it will be made in Munich as the i4. And then they noted the specs which, at concept stage, don’t mean too much to be honest. 0-62mph in 4secs, top speed 120mph, 373 miles ranges and a new battery system made of magical fairy dust. Really the specs don’t mean a thing apart from what sort of segment they might be aiming this at, plus add a little range for optimism. So this puts it in Model S territory. However there’s no date set, and all they say is their range will be complete by 2025. So really having a car which can do what a Tesla did 10 years before it, isn’t too much to boast about. I wonder sometimes if auto execs and their PR handlers know things like this before making these kind of statements. Tesla was so far ahead of its time and continues to innovate, with increasing autopilot sophistication and the Model 3 interior, it doesn’t blow me away to hear a BMW will match a Tesla by 2025. https://www.motor1.com/news/235082/bmw-i4-electric-vehicle-confirmed/   PORSCHE CROSSOVER INTO, ER, CROSSOVERS Onto a car which is here, almost. The Porsche Mission E will be here in 2019 and plans are well advanced, including the installation of 800-volt charging stations at all their dealerships in North America to make use of the 350kW charging in the Mission-E. Yesterday at Geneva Porsche showed off a new model called the Mission E Cross Turismo. This is a crossover utility vehicle, which has all-wheel drive, four doors and room for cargo. The specs mirror that of the Mission-E so 310 miles range with 250 miles added in just 15 minutes of charging time. Although a future model, Porsche says it’s road-ready as it’s built on the work they’ve already done. Given the price it will be up there with Tesla Model S and X territory so will have to be very special, from the pictures, it does look it. https://techcrunch.com/2018/03/06/porsches-mission-e-cross-turismo-is-the-ev-crossover-you-want/    ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA ELECTRICS Aston Martin confirmed at Geneva they’re bringing back their legendary Lagonda brand for all their future electric cars. CEO Andy Palmer explained: “We believe people associate luxury in their cars with a certain traditional and even old fashioned approach because, to date, that is all that’s been available to them. Lagonda exists to challenge that thinking and prove that being modern and luxurious are not mutually exclusive concepts.” So they’re going more the way of Tesla than Bentley, in that automation and pure electrification. Their aim is to work with solid state batteries, they think 400 miles range is the sweet spot and they want to find a way to use induction charging to top the battery in 15 minutes. If some of that sounds a little pie in the sky, it is, because Aston Martin don’t have the deep pockets of their rivals. so they’ll need a partner to achieve those ambitions. https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1115581_aston-martin-to-make-lagonda-a-premium-ev-brand   VW CHIEF SAYS GOVERNMENTS NEED DIESEL And now, if you felt the room go a little cold, let’s finally get onto someone who made big headlines yesterday – Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller. The more I think about this statement the more I don’t think he would have wanted the press to pick up on one phrase, when English is his second language. However let’s see what he said to Bloomberg: “Diesel will see a renaissance in the not-too-distant future because people who drove diesels will realize that it was a very comfortable drive concept. Once the knowledge that diesels are eco-friendly turns up in people’s minds, then for me there’s no reason not to buy one.” “The rules of the game in the EU in relation to climate protection and emissions goals on CO2 are so challenging that governments cannot do without diesel,” he said. And this from a company which would have an extra $30billion in the bank were it not for Dieselgate. From that we’ve seen cities introduce diesel bans in the future, other makers run away from the fuel, and even in Germany they’re talking about bans. The problem comes from European Union regulations to cut carbon dioxide. CO2 was the focus of pollution many years ago and diesel at the time was seen at the answer, without the full dire consequences on public health realised from particulates and Nitrogen Oxides. The next target on the horizon is an EU rule that fleet emissions from all cars sold by each brand should be 95g of CO2 per km by 2021. Meeting that would be slightly easier with diesel, but since Dieselgate, public opinion has turned. Saying that, Mueller told reporters VW won’t miss those targets. Which doesn’t make sense – if VW can hit the targets, why the panic? Because these are hefty fines coming for those that miss the target. Diesel sales fell 19% in Germany last month, and in the UK last month were 35% down from 50% in 2014. Last October investment research house MSCI warned all carmakers apart from Toyota are at risk of being fined by the EU for missing targets https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-05/volkswagen-ceo-predicts-renaissance-for-embattled-diesel-cars https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-autoshow-geneva/diesel-collapse-gives-automakers-carbon-headache-idUKKCN1GI0QN?utm_source=applenews   WHILST THE UK GOVERNMENT SAYS THEY DON’T NEED DIESEL Finally, I don’t often read a government tweet, but this one caught my attention. In the UK a tax exemption for taxi drivers starts next month in April, to get an extra £1550 off a new electric cab. Zero emission taxis also have no road tax to pay. Each London diesel cab replied with an electric REX saves 7 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, and there are 75,000 on the roads. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond said: "This is a victory for the environment and new technologies, which I am determined to support as we build an economy fit for the future. Ensuring the air in our bustling towns and cities is free from pollution is part of our quest to become the first government to leave the environment in a better state than we found it. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/tax-break-to-help-black-cabs-go-green https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/black-taxi-drivers-offered-1550-to-dump-diesel-a3782761.html?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#link_time=1520338376   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
