The former makes 148bhp and 184lb ft of torque, the latter 113bhp. The other relevant numbers are six (the number of ratios in the dual-clutch transmission), 12.8 (the capacity, in kilowatt hours, of the lithium-ion battery) and 32 (approximate grams per kilometer of CO2, with UK figures yet to be confirmed). Here are two more: 6.7sec to 62mph, and 140mph flat out." writes evo.co.uk: "Cupra quotes 32 miles of all-electric range – a real-world 20-25 miles is more likely. The pseudo five-cylinder growl in Sport and Cupra modes isn’t too bad and ramps up the drama, and outright pace is brisk enough, but the electric and petrol elements always seem to be fighting each other. The electric motor doesn’t quite have the power on its own for that satisfying EV-only thrust of a full-electric car, but rousing the engine takes several beats longer than you’d hope too."   https://www.evo.co.uk/cupra/203183/cupra-leon-ehybrid-2020-review-are-hybrids-and-hot-hatchbacks-still-mutually-exclusive   MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS PHEV AVAILABLE IN 2021 "Mitsubishi has announced the redesigned Eclipse Cross, which will be offered in select markets in Asia, Europe and Australia for the first time as a plug-in hybrid with a modified version of the drive system from the Outlander PHEV." according to electrive: "Sales of the new model are scheduled to start in early 2021 in select markets, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. At this point, there are no plans to bring the hybrid version of the vehicle to market in the USA. Mitsubishi does not provide any performance data, but since the Eclipse Cross PHEV basically takes over the drive system from the Outlander PHEV – albeit with modifications to match its own chassis – we at least indicate the performance of the new part-time electric motor."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/15/mitsubishi-eclipse-cross-phev-available-in-2021/   FIAT CHRYSLER WILL INVEST UP TO $1.5 BILLION TO BUILD EVS IN WINDSOR   "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will invest between $1.35 billion and $1.5 billion in its Windsor assembly plant in Canada to build electric vehicles as part of a tentative deal with Canadian autoworkers, Unifor National President Jerry Dias said on Thursday." reports Autoblog: "The auto union said FCA would invest in a state-of-the-art vehicle platform that will enable the assembly of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, with at least one new model in 2025. The announcement comes less than a month after Unifor said Ford would invest $1.46 billion in its Oakville and Windsor plants."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/15/fiat-chrysler-canada-electric-vehicle-deal-unifor/   NIO NARROWS GAP WITH TESLA " Nio, viewed as a bellwether of the Chinese electric-vehicle industry, narrowed the gap with US carmaker Tesla, mainland China’s highest selling electric-car marque, over the last three months." according to the South China MOrning Post: "The company, started by William Li Bin in 2014, delivered 3,226 of its ES6 sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) in September, a year-on-year increase of 87 per cent, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In August, its sales rose 58 per cent, with the company selling 2,840 ES6s. Tesla, on the other hand, led the sector by quite a distance last month, by a margin of 8,103, having delivered 11,329 of the Model 3 cars built at its Shanghai-based Gigafactory 3. In June, however, the gap between Tesla and Nio was wider"   https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3105773/chinese-electric-car-bellwether-marque-nio-narrows-gap-tesla   EVS TO RETURN POWER TO GRID WITH ABB INTELLIGENT CHARGING As part of a contract with France’s DREEV, a joint venture between Électricité de France (EDF) and Nuvve, which specializes in intelligent charging for EVs, ABB will supply its brand-new 11 kW bi-directional charging technology, specially designed for V2G.   ABB’s solution integrated with DREEV software technology will enable EV drivers to export surplus power back to the grid. With potential to generate up to 20€/EV/month, V2G thereby reduces the total cost of ownership and further boosts the adoption of EVs. Bi-directional chargers also help smooth the flow of uneven generation of electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind. Under the partnership, ABB will supply V2G bi-directional kiosks in France, followed by installations in the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and Germany.   The light and compact 11 kW charger delivers a quick and flexible charge and is fully compatible with current and future EVs. It meets the most stringent grid compliance requirements and is designed to be the global benchmark for V2G charging.   You can listen to all 907 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSYMONS.CO.UK – THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SPECIALIST (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #809   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CITROËN Ë-SPACETOURER TO HIT MARKETS IN 2020 "PSA is accelerating its push into commercial electric vehicles as Citroën has now announced that it will also launch the compact van Spacetourer as a BEV – called the ë-SpaceTourer – by the end of the year." says electrive: "Peugeot will follow with the sister model Peugeot e-Traveller scheduled to hit the markets before the end of 2020. Both use the same technology with an electric motor of 100 kW, and there is a choice of two battery versions with 50 or 75 kWh. The latter enables a WLTP range of up to 330 kilometres. The third electric van in the group, the Opel Zafira Life, is announced for early 2021. Like its commercial vehicle counterparts Peugeot e-Expert, Citroën ë-Jumpy and Opel Vivaro-e, the Zafira Life also uses the well-known PSA drive. The individual leather seats in the second row can be turned, and a table can be folded out. The particularly strongly tinted rear windows are intended to provide the necessary privacy, for example, for chauffeur services and VIP shuttles."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/12/citroen-e-spacetourer-to-hit-markets-in-2020/   VOLKSWAGEN ROLLS OUT ID. CHARGER Volkswagen has started sale of the ID. Charger for quick and easy home charging for electric vehicles. The wallbox can be ordered online or from Volkswagen dealers in eight European countries2. The first boxes were delivered to customers recently. At an introductory price of €399. The ID. Charger will be gradually introduced in three versions. All have a charging capacity of up to 11kW, a permanently mounted Type 2 charging cable and integrated DC residual current protection for maximum safety. The two top models – the ID. Charger Connect and ID. Charger Pro – will also be fully connected and can be easily managed via smartphone. Customers can therefore control charging processes, and enjoy the advantages of practical functions such as remote maintenance, managing access via a charge card and regular software updates. The ID. Charger Pro also offers an integrated electricity meter that can be used, for example, to bill electricity costs for company car drivers.   TESLA POISED TO ROLL OUT SPEED LIMIT RECOGNITION AND ROUNDABOUT SUPPORT "Tesla is poised to improve its Autopilot functionality and its Full Self-Driving suite by rolling out speed limit recognition and roundabout support worldwide soon." says Teslarati: " Tesla hacker @greentheonly posted a tweet on the evening of June 11 describing the company’s intention to release the upcoming and highly-anticipated Autopilot improvements. It is unknown when the updates will roll out to Tesla owners, but the noted Tesla hacker indicated they would likely be coming soon, and that the features would be released worldwide. Tesla seems to be utilizing 3D-rendered icons for the upcoming features. This suggests that speed limit recognition may be integrated directly in the in-car displays of the company’s vehicles, similar to stop lights, stop signs, and other vehicles on the road."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-speed-limit-recognition-roundabout-support-worldwide-release-date/   RENAULT ENDS BATTERY LEASING IN SPAIN "Renault is slowly removing the option to lease the battery from its electric cars. First it was the UK, now it’s time to remove this option in Spain." reports PushEVs: "The battery of the new generation Renault ZOE is made with NCM 712 cells from LG Chem and the cost at the battery pack level is already below 100 euros per kWh. When compared to Clio, its ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) counterpart, the ZOE looks extremely overpriced."   Renault ZOE Life R110 with ZE 40 battery: 29.128 euros Renault Clio Life 53 kW: 10.267 euros   Renault ZOE Zen R135 with ZE 50 battery: 32.888 euros Renault Clio Zen E-TECH (hybrid) 104 kW: 19.582 euros   https://pushevs.com/2020/06/11/renault-ends-battery-leasing-in-spain/   ELECTRIC SHUTTLES TO START SERVICE IN SOUTH SACRAMENTO "The first of three new GreenPower EV Star shuttles will be put into service beginning Monday, 15 Jun 2020 as part of Electrify America’s more than $40 million Green Cities investments in Sacramento. The vehicles are being integrated into SacRT’s highly popular SmaRT Ride on-demand micro-shuttle program servicing the Franklin-South Sacramento communities." says Green Car Congress: "The GreenPower EV Star shuttles were assembled in Porterville, California and retrofitted with a unique side door configuration added to facilitate shuttle access for those with special needs. Electrify America fully subsidized the costs of the shuttles, the DC fast-charging infrastructure to support them, and the retrofit costs."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/06/20200612-sac.html   DPD SWITZERLAND GETS ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH 680-KWH BATTERY "DPD has purchased a Volvo electric truck with unprecedented range to use in its operations in Switzerland. The France-based parcel carrier has bought a Futuricum truck, based on a model by Volvo and developed by Designwerk, which offers battery capacity of 680kwH and a range of up to 760km (472 miles)." reports eDelivery.net: "Supplied via green-generated energy in DPD’s depot, the vehicle saves around 96 kilograms of CO2 per 100km, corresponding to 76.8 tons per year. Work has begun on the vehicle, with delivery anticipated for mid-December 2020.While DPD makes wide use of electric vans for shorter last-mile trips, using battery-powered vehicles for long distances and large payloads has generally been difficult because the size of the battery required takes up significant space and weight within the vehicle."   https://edelivery.net/2020/06/dpd-deploy-volvo-long-range-electric-truck-switzerland/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   Pete Glass Frankly if it can’t match the original 2012 Volt or Opel/Vauxhall Ampera’s 35miles or so, it’s completely pointless and the latest Kuga Phev or Prius Prime barely scrape past that. Now I hear of talk of 60miles plus from Merc [?], could be good for some people but only if they have home charging. Next generation Phevs must have rapid or at less semi-rapid charging [22kW] to be really worthwhile and now only the Mitsi Outlander does this.  Now here I emphasise and rant … if you don’t have home charging then a low miles Phev really is utterly pointless, faffing about hunting for a public charger for a few miles   Rich Fowler I find that the Clarity's 35-50 miles of range works pretty well for me for now, given where I live and how I use the car, but obviously, that's not going to work for everyone. Some people can get away with even less range than that, and some will want even more. Having less than 35 miles of range in the winter is annoying where I live, where things are a little spaced out and suburban. And it's just enough battery where I can get it fully charged up on a 120v 15A circuit overnight   Tom James In response to QOTW regarding PHEV range, I think that once you have a range of between 30-40 miles on full electric, it renders PHEVs unnecessary, as most people’s daily driving will fit into this range bracket. So one might as well buy a full EV with the extra 100 or so miles of range for the rare occasion that one drives a longer distance. As an Outlander PHEV owner (which gets 30 miles EV range on a good day), it only took around 2 months of ownership to realise I wasn’t using any petrol day to day and was carrying around an engine and fuel tank for no reason. I have regretted not going for a BEV ever since, now I have to steal my wife’s Ioniq EV!   Alan Northcutt, waco, tx USA answer:  0 miles because plug-in hybrids are a waste of resources now. they offer few e-miles, emit tailpipe and carbon pollution, require much maintenance, malfunction more frequently.  with the growing charge network, they are unnecessary and only delay the transition to battery-electrics.  analogous to natural gas, they are not a "bridge vehicle."   and they only delay the transition to reach "net zero" emissions by 2050 (IPCC)   Dan from Canada Ideal: 2 x your total daily commute, in a car with a heat pump - would allow for EV mode for 100% of local driving, including chores, even in winter. Use gasoline (hybrid mode) only for longer weekend/vacation drives. Good: 1.5 x your  total daiy commute, no heat pump - allows for EV mode for all local driving, including chores, except on some winter days. Again, hybrid mode for longer drives. That’s our situation with our Hyundai  Ioniq PHEV - “as EV as we can afford”. Marginal: 1 x your total daily commute - but may be actually good enough if you don’t need the  car for chores or you can charge at work. Too low: less than your total daily commute, but may be good enough if you can charge at work.   Rene Schneider The battery of the plug in hybrid car should cover the daily commute and you have to have the ability to charge at home (or at work), to make the driver happy. This means an absolute minimum of 50–60km standard battery range for a plug-in, better 80–100km (to cover for winter degrade). Otherwise the driver soon gets too lazy to plug in often enough and experience the joy of EV. Fast charge: What I most missed the last years was, to be able to „fast" charge my plug-in within less than an hour. Often it was not worthwhile to use a charger when you had an hour break somewhere. Strong EV motor: Key for the plug in is a strong enough EV motor (ours has 100kW). So to experience the joy of EV, and that the fossil gobbler has not to kick in regularly.   Joe Maher I say a PHEV should have 80 to 100kms range. 24kwh battery should do it. I have the outlander and the 40does most days but maybe twice a week I have to do 80 to 100 in a day and I hate dipping into the tank.   Mike H We bought a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid almost exactly 1 year ago. It's got a 16KWh battery (~12KWh useable) but is pretty heavy (~5000lbs). It's range is supposed to be about 52km, but I live in the mountains and my commute goes up a really big hill. Driving around in the city where it's flat, it'll go 60+km, but going to work and back (30km round trip) uses about 75% in the summer and 95% in the winter. In the year we've owned it, we've put just 5 tanks of gas (~250 litres) while doing almost 20,000km. It's insane how little gas we've used and on longer trips where there's charging available. In fact with cheap zero carbon hydro electricity here in BC and high gas prices, I figure we've saved about $1,800 in fuel!   patdbean The average commute in the UK at least is about 38 miles , so a good hybrid range is 40 to 50 miles that way , as long as you can charge at home and at work that should be enough to keep "most" hybrids  on electric  "most" of the time.   Bimi I think we should demand a minimum of 60km WLTP / real world range on hybrids. Having driven ev for 6 years now i see that more and more friends/people buy plugins and they like driving on EV mode so much that everywhere they go they will plug it in and charge it. This results in less charging spots available for those that really need it.   Steven Bollinger Question of the week: If hybrid cars had enough all-electric range so that their owners NEVER burned any gasoline, that would be perfect, in my humble opinion.   Paul F Enough range to do all city driving so 70ks would be perfect for a plug in hybrid. ICE cars are sort of economical at constant speed but they are very inefficient at start stop. Also it does not take much power to keep a car at speed but it takes a lot of energy to accelerate the Briggs and Stratton hybrid concept from 1980 proves that an air cooled lawnmower engine can keep a car moving   alan baker On question of week, PHEV's should be able to do  min 30 miles on battery to qualify for grant. Had a niro PHEV for about 18 mths  and found that I could do the majority of my local journeys on the battery, but is was nice to have engine as a back up because the Charge points in rural Wales is very poor   Cameron Hall 50 miles on the battery would probably be my minimum.  Not that I would ever buy a hybrid car,  way too many moving parts.   LTK  • 1 week ago I had a Ford PHEV with 21 mile EV range & got gas about once a month.  I charged at home every night.  I understand people with the Volt (42 EV Range) got gas about once every 3 months.  I’d like a PHEV with 80-100 mile EV range & get gas about once a year - only for road trips and to keep the ICE parts working.   Josh Pritt, Space Coast EV Drivers The 2nd generation Chevy Volt had a fairly perfect EV range of 52 miles.  That seemed to cover all of our daily driving and still have miles left to run an extra unplanned errand or two.  It even covers the weekend trips where we would go to the mall, movies, grocery store, visit parents and friends around town and still come home with 2 or 3 miles left on the battery. I would say any new plug in hybrid would have to have at least 52 miles range, otherwise they are starting out many years BEHIND a car that came out in 2015.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Tell me about a conversation you had with someone where you introduced them to EVs   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #783   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 18th May 2020. TESLA GIGAFACTORY 1 COULD GROW AS PARTNER PANASONIC REPORTS MORE PROFITS "Not only did Tesla pull a profit in the first quarter of 2020, but its battery partner Panasonic said on Monday its battery business recorded earnings in the black, too, for the second time. Now, Gigafactory 1, based in Nevada, could see an expansion." says Roadshow by CNET: "Panasonic Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda specifically said the company was "in discussions right now" to expand work at the facility. Although the company is no longer Tesla's exclusive battery provider (the company works with LG Chem in China), the partnership has blossomed in recent years and recorded two profitable quarters. Umeda mentioned demand is beyond the current capacity of 35 gigawatts per year."   And from that Reuters report, they say: "Umeda hinted that Panasonic has been developing new batteries with Tesla. “We will be working to improve materials and technologies throughout this financial year,” he said. The Tesla battery business provided a bright spot in Panasonic’s otherwise grim earnings, hit by plant closures and supply chain disruptions for its laptops, washing machines, automotive components and factory equipment. Panasonic has decided to exit solar cell production at Tesla’s New York plant this year. It also decided not to build a new battery plant for Tesla in China. The U.S. car maker has entered into partnerships with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd (051910.KS) and China’s CATL"   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-gigafactory-nevada-reopen-production-elon-musk   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results-idUSKBN22U0MF   ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES TO FALL 18% IN 2020 "Sales of electric passenger vehicles are forecast to fall 18% in 2020, to 1.7 million worldwide – with the coronavirus crisis interrupting ten successive years of strong growth." according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance: "However, sales of combustion engine cars are set to drop even faster this year (by 23%), and the long-term electrification of transport is projected to accelerate in the years ahead.  BNEF’s analysis suggests that global sales of internal combustion engine, or ICE, cars peaked in 2017 and will continue their long-term decline after a temporary post-crisis recovery. For the first time, BNEF sees overall new passenger vehicle sales peaking in 2036 as changing global demographics, increasing urbanization and more shared mobility outweigh the effects of economic development – though the fleet size keeps growing. Electric models are seen accounting for 3% of global car sales in 2020, rising to 7% in 2023, at some 5.4 million units."   https://bnef.turtl.co/story/evo-2020/   AS COVID-19 HITS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SOME THRIVE, OTHERS DIE And quoting the BNEF report, Bloomberg today looked at which countries will drive EV adoption: "The pandemic ravaged economy is expected to give electric vehicles a boost in China, Europe and countries committed to sparking battery power via financial stimulus and infrastructure spending, In the U.S., electric vehicles sales will shrink to just 1.7% of the personal auto market in 2021. At the same time, the sector will swell to 8.1% of all sales in China, which accounts for the largest share of global EV sales, and 5% of those in Europe, the BNEF report says."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-19/as-covid-19-hits-electric-vehicles-some-thrive-others-die?sref=W369vOBR   VW PARKS CARS WHEREVER THEY GO In an article translated (Google translate!) from German: "Volkswagen , the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, they are currently mainly occupied with parking. The group has had difficulties with software development for quite some time - the electric car ID.3 is therefore pre-produced without a complete operating system, in the hope that the software will be added later when it is finally ready. In the meantime, thousands of ID.3s are parked as soulless cases, partly on the premises of the VW factory in Zwickau, as shown here, partly in a huge parking lot in Saxony, which VW does not like to show to the public. But now the car manufacturer could soon run out of space: Because not only does VW have software problems with the production of the ID.3, but recently also with the good old Golf. Delivery of the Golf 8 had to be stopped because the emergency assistant was not working.  Nevertheless, the company wants to continue producing the Golf 8 and simply, exactly, park thousands of cars somewhere until this pretty embarrassing software problem is solved."   https://www.sueddeutsche.de/wirtschaft/vw-golf-software-problem-1.4911260   2020 BMW X5 XDRIVE45E REVIEW – THE NEW BEST BUY "Because the X5 is one of the best-selling cars it has on sale today and keeping the fleet’s CO2 emissions in check is a tricky ordeal. A hybrid will definitely help out with that, especially considering the tax systems in various countries around the world." says BMWBlog: "The new BMW X5 xDrive45e came with a host of improvements compared to its predecessor. t low speeds it does emit a hum to warn pedestrians, but it would still cause a couple of frowns from people as they probably had no idea BMW has an X5 hybrid.   Whereas the old hybrid X5 had a 9.2 kWh battery, the new one can store more than 2.5 times that, being rated for 24 kWh out of which you can use 21 kWh. So that’s a big hike, even though the physical size of the battery didn’t change that much. Keep the pedal glued to the floor and speed just keeps ticking up. This car picks up speed at an alarming rate. It may be a hybrid, 2.5-ton monster but it can move. 0-62 takes just 5.6 seconds and you’ll go all the way up to 250 km/h (155 mph) if you dare."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/05/18/2020-bmw-x5-xdrive45e-review/   HYUNDAI MOTOR’S EVS A POPULAR CHOICE IN POLICE FLEETS AROUND EUROPE "A growing number of police forces around Europe are turning to Hyundai EVs to use in their fleets. Amid growing concerns about inner-city air pollution, zero-emission vehicles such as battery electric (BEV) and fuel cell electric (FCEV) vehicles present an attractive solution for police officers’ mobility needs." says Automotiveworld.com: "Hyundai’s best-selling all-electric SUV Kona Electric is a popular choice for police forces in countries like Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. A year ago, the police force of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland added 13 Kona Electric models to their fleet – five as police cars and eight as civilian vehicles.  In the Netherlands, police forces in Amsterdam, East Netherlands and Central Netherlands are also testing Kona Electric’s suitability as a police cruiser. Its long driving range and fast charging make it an attractive choice for police use. Kona Electrics can be found in the police fleets in Valencia, Spain, in both the 39 kWh and 64 kWh editions. And in the U.K., Sussex Police and North Wales Police already have one Kona Electric each in their fleets. Additionally, Hampshire Police have ordered nine Kona Electric models for their fleet, which will be delivered early next month."   https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/hyundai-motors-evs-a-popular-choice-in-police-fleets-around-europe/   KIA E-NIRO VS KIA SOUL EV "Now, though, there's an all-new Soul EV, which uses the same 64kWh battery and 201bhp electric motor as its e-Niro sibling. And that raises an important question if you like the idea of a fully electric family SUV: which one is better?" asks WhatCar? "If the moment does take you, you can hustle both cars down a country road at a reasonable lick, but we’d describe their handling as tidy rather than fun. Of the two, it's the e-Niro that's more agile, because it leans less than the taller, marginally more top-heavy-feeling Soul, plus its steering reacts more naturally; the Soul's is quicker but not as progressively weighted, and that takes a bit of getting used to."   https://www.whatcar.com/news/kia-e-niro-vs-kia-soul-ev/n21450   MITSUBISHI EXTENDS 10,000 FREE ELECTRIC MILES OFFER ON OUTLANDER PHEV "Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has extended its 10,000 Free Green Miles offer for Outlander PHEV buyers until September. Offered in partnership with OVO Energy, the incentive provides drivers of the plug-in hybrid SUV with 10,000 miles worth of free electricity." according to AM Online "Customers will receive a £20.40 credit in their OVO account each month, for 24 months. The deal also includes Polar Plus membership, so Outlander PHEV drivers can charge away from home for free."   https://www.am-online.com/news/car-manufacturer-news/2020/05/19/mitsubishi-offers-10-000-free-electric-miles-with-outlander-phev   WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES, BRAND REPUTATION IS NOT A SURE THING "When the topic turns to brand reputation and electric vehicles, the case seems easy enough. Zero emission cars make an important contribution to decarbonization, and that reflects nicely on the auto companies who produce them. However, even the simplest of brand calculations can take an unexpected turn when politics are involved." writes TriplePundit: "Officials in Alameda County, California, had been working with Tesla on a May 18 reopening plan for its Fremont facility, but Musk launched a ferocious attack on Twitter demanding an earlier opening. The result was a blinding blitz of free publicity, during which Musk restarted his factory in Fremont, California days before Ford and GM were set to open. If the idea was to re-assert Tesla’s image as a maverick bucking the entrenched industry tide and bureaucrats alike, Musk certainly succeeded on that score. Last week the president tweeted his approval of Musk’s tactics over the Fremont opening, writing that “California should let Tesla & @elonmusk open the plant, NOW. It can be done Fast & Safely!” If things continue in this vein, it seems that Musk may accomplish the seemingly impossible task of turning Trump voters into Tesla buyers."   https://www.triplepundit.com/story/2020/electric-vehicles-brand-reputation-not-sure-thing/120316     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HIGH POWER CHARGERS BACK ONLINE! Fastned: "Good news! We switched on the CCS outlets of our 175 kW chargers again. Tests by HUBER+SUHNER confirm that the liquid cooled cables meet all safety standards. We will remove the tape and stickers from the cables today. If you are at a station that still has tape around the CCS outlet, feel free to give us a call if you want to help us out removing it." Electrify America: no statement I’ve seen but I was sent a Twitter note to say they’re online too   TESLA EXPECTS SMALL PROFIT CNBC reports on the Tesla Q4 2018 earnings ahead of the call: "Musk said preliminary results show the company made a profit on an unadjusted basis during the fourth quarter of 2018, but it was less than the previous three months. In the first quarter, higher-priced Model 3s to Europe and Asia "will hopefully allow us, with great difficulty, effort and some luck, to target a tiny profit," Musk said in a Jan. 18 company update."   https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/29/tesla-reports-earnings-as-shares-fall-amid-a-few-red-flags.html   ASPARK OWL ELECTRIC HYPERCAR TARGETS NÜRBURGRING LAP RECORD "You might remember the Aspark Owl electric hypercar from its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Development is still underway on the Japanese-built machine, and the company now says that a run at the Nürburgring record could be under consideration." says Chris Bruce, Editor for Motor1.com: "[The] Aspark Owl performances are allowing us to aim [for] the Nürburgring record," a company spokesperson told Top Gear. Aspark's testing already shows that the Owl is capable of reaching 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 1.9 seconds. The company's official specs show the hypercar being able to reach 174 mph (280 kph). At a price of 3.1 million euros ($3.5 million) and production of just 50 units, the Owl will be a very rare machine, and the company will deliver the first one in 2020."   https://www.motor1.com/news/302941/aspark-owl-nurburgring-record-attempt/   NEVS AND KOENIGSEGG FORM A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP Swedish car makers NEVS AB and Koenigsegg AB are together forming a strategic partnership, enabling the development of parallel vehicle models in slightly higher volumes with emphasis on electrification, as well as strengthening growth opportunities in the hyper car segment. A reminder NEVS came from ashes of Saab, and Koenigsegg was founded in 1994 by Christian von Koenigsegg, with the mission to create the perfect sports car NEVS is making a capital injection of EUR 150 million, thereby taking a 20 percent minority stake in Koenigsegg’s parent company. Additionally, the parties are forming a joint venture to expand into new market segments where NEVS AB is contributing USD 150 million in starting capital for a 65 percent stake and Koenigsegg obtains 35 percent by contributing primarily with intellectual property, technology licenses, and product design. Alongside NEVS capacity for production in Trollhättan and China, NEVS through its majority owner Evergrande, has a wide distribution platform and channels through ownership in one of China’s largest car retailers. Last week, Evergrande announced the acquisition of 58.07 percent in automobile battery maker Shanghai CENAT New Energy Co Ltd, a $156 million deal.   MITSUBISHI TO DEBUT ENGELBERG TOURER ELECTRIC SUV CONCEPT IN GENEVA "Mitsubishi will reveal at the 89th Geneva International Motor Show on March 5th its all-new Engelberg Tourer Concept." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "The short note about the car says that Engelberg Tourer Concept will bring: more SUV, more EV, more technology and more style (named after a beautiful; rugged Alpine town with a history of sporting success). It’s highly probable that the Engelberg Tourer Concept is actually a new plug-in hybrid, which is bigger and has more all-electric range than the current aging Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV." Top Gear said: "Lagonda Vision Geneva 2018: Aston Valkryrie AMR Pro and the Lagonda Vision Given the success of the Outlander PHEV, it’s no surprise that Mitsubishi are trying to cash-in on the electric SUV trend, although it’s currently unclear as to whether this will also be a plug-in hybrid or if it’ll go fully electric. We’ll have to wait until 5 March to find that out, when more technical details will be announced and we’ll meet Engelberg in the flesh."   https://insideevs.com/mitsubishi-engelberg-tourer-ev-geneva/   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/geneva-motor-show/mitsubishi-calling-its-geneva-concept-engelberg   UK ISP IS TURNING BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE INTO EV CHARGING STATIONS "Liberty Global is testing a secondary use for its broadband cabinets, the streetside boxes that link internet connections from exchanges to homes and businesses. It's harnessing the infrastructure of its Virgin Media subsidiary to build electric vehicle charging stations in the UK." according to Engadget: "Liberty hopes to have up to six trial charging points set up by mid-April. It's also planning tests in Belgium through its Telenet network. Last year, Deutsche Telekom revealed plans to turn 12,000 cabinets into charging points."   https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/28/virgin-media-ev-charging-trial-liberty-global   AUDI E-TRON IS QUIETEST EV IN BJØRN NYLAND’S TESTS InsideEVs has been keeping an eye on Bjorn Nylands e-tron review videos: "Audi e-tron turns out to be the quietest electric car ever tested by Bjørn Nyland, averaging just 63 dB. The silence, even at high speeds, was earlier signaled by the Autogefühl review, which clearly said that it’s better than in the case of Tesla. Bjorn revealed that e-tron is around 2-3 dB below the second best Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-PACE, despite not necessarily having the quietest winter tires on it, at all speed levels"   https://insideevs.com/audi-e-tron-is-the-quietest-ev-in-bjorn-nylands-tests/   IN SHANGHAI, EVERY IKEA DELIVERY IS NOW MADE WITH AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE "In 2018, Ingka Group–the parent company of Ikea–made a bold pledge: By 2025, the company will deliver every item worldwide by electric vehicle. It started with a closer-range target of accomplishing the full switch to EVs in five cities–New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, and Shanghai–by 2020." writes Fast Compnay: "As of January 23, it’s already reached that goal in Shanghai. The company announced that in the inner city of Shanghai, all home deliveries are now carried out by electric vehicle."   https://www.fastcompany.com/90297201/in-shanghai-every-ikea-delivery-is-now-made-with-an-electric-vehicle   LOTUS AND WILLIAMS TEAM UP FOR RUMORED ELECTRIC HYPERCAR "Sports car maker Lotus and Williams Advanced Engineering have officially announced a new strategic partnership which will allow the two companies to share “research and development into advanced propulsion technologies.” " says Anthony Karr at Motor1.com: "Autocar claims the Norfolk-based brand is actually developing a hybrid hypercar codenamed Omega. Lotus is believed to be leading the development to ensure the car carries the brand’s DNA and meets its criteria for lightness. Williams will contribute its technical expertise in electric systems to the project and will probably supply the batteries. It is believed the Omega hypercar will use “at least two electric motors” in an all-wheel-drive powertrain configuration. Advanced battery technology should provide a range of more than 250 miles (402 kilometers) between two charges with a fast charging option available."   https://www.motor1.com/news/302878/lotus-williams-partnership-hypercar-rumors/   MORE TESLOOP HIGH MILEAGAE "Tesloop’s Model X, named Deuxy, just hit the 350,000 mile threshold, and founder Haydn Sonnad took to YouTube to share some lessons learned on the road to that impressive milestone. Battery degradation had been of particular importance in Tesloop’s vehicles because they not only put a lot of miles on their vehicles, but did so by loading their vehicles up every day and running routes back to back, with Supercharging sessions in between to fill the batteries back up." reports Kyle for CleanTechnica: "After putting over 350,000 miles on Deuxy, Tesloop recorded a 13% degradation in the capacity of the battery — compared to the range per charge it had when new. That translates to a range of 215 miles / 346 kilometers at a 95% charge today compared to 247 miles / 398 kilometers at 95% when it was new."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/28/350000-miles-in-a-tesla-model-x-just-18000-in-maintenance/   TOYOTA ADMITS TO LOSING PREVIOUSLY LOYAL CUSTOMERS TO TESLA And finally from Steven at InsideEVs: "According to Automotive News, Toyota’s defection rate is around nine percent. Interestingly, CEO of Toyota Motor North America Jim Lentz admitted that half of those previously loyal customers are moving to Tesla. Nonetheless, according to a report by Tesla, the Toyota Prius tops the list of non-Tesla cars that are traded in by Model 3 buyers. It will be interesting to see what the future brings for Toyota."   https://insideevs.com/toyota-admits-losing-sales-to-tesla/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 27th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   FRIDAY FACTS "Chinas Electric Buses Are Hurting the Oil Industry to the tune of About 279,000 barrels of fuel a day and adds 9500 zero emision #EV buses every 5 weeks." From Greg Wester @gwestr "Tesla lets software engineers on the factory floor to join the line and turn wrenches so they can automate the work and retool the line for speed"   UPDATE ON KONA BATTERY CHARGING "Thanks for mentioning my recent Kona article on cleantechnica. The charging power info that you were not confident about is actually referenced (link through) in the article at the point where I make the 80 kW statement".   ...and my reply: "Hi Max,I think the confusion here is on the Hyundai press materials it says “when connected to a 100kW charger”. I wonder if everyone has seen that, assumed that’s the charge rate, and ran with it? If you search for “Hyundai Kona EV 100kW” which is what I did before that show, you get countless articles all saying it has 100kW charge speed. And if you want the 2hour video review from Bjorn Nyland, who had one from Hyundai for a test, he says he’s been told it will charge up to 100kW. So I think I’ve just heard that number a lot from people who also know a lot about it. But saying all that, I agree that you (and John) are working from the most reliable ‘first hand’ information. i.e. the engineers. I was wrong to trust those other sources. I’ve attached the datasheet from Hyundai North America which confirms the pack is 356v nominal. If it’s using the same LG Chem pack as the Bolt, the consensus  seems to be a configuration of 3.7V * 60Ah * 288 cells = 64kWh and 3.7V * 96 cell triplets = 355.2V. If the engineers were being specific with max current of 200amps, at that voltage, that’s 71.6kW which is in the ball park of the IONIQ. Also I have a feeling the maximum current you can put through the CCS connector is 200A.   JAGUAR DELAYS SOME I-PACE ALL-ELECTRIC SUV DELIVERIES Electrek says they have heard from some disappointed owners that some are seeing their deliveries being pushed back by several months. Fred Lambert says: "Dealers say it is due to “manufacturing issues” while Jaguar says it is “prioritizing” orders." "We contacted Jaguar over the issue and the automaker says that it still plans for customer production to start “late this summer”, but it confirmed that some customers are experiencing delays due to “prioritization”: “In some instances individual customers may have been informed of a delay regarding their order. This will be due to prioritisation of market specific orders to best meet the exceptional demand.”" "A source familiar with the matter told Electrek that Jaguar’s supply of Matrix LED headlights are actually limited and the company might be pushing orders of non-First Edition vehicles in order to focus on the First Edition vehicles which need to be 2019 model year."   https://electrek.co/2018/07/26/jaguar-i-pace-delay/     EV CONNECT CLOSES $8-MILLION FINANCING ROUND "EV Connect, a provider of charging solutions including a cloud-based network management platform, has closed an $8-million financing round, led by Ecosystem Integrity Fund" reports Charged EVs: "The company will use the new funds to accelerate the deployment of its EV Cloud management platform in the US, advance its integration with utility grid systems and expand into new global markets."   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/ev-connect-closes-8-million-financing-round/   MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS ARRIVE IN THE UK In preparation for the launch of the new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which goes on sale in the UK on August 1, the first shipment of vehicles has arrived in the UK at Bristol’s Royal Portbury Docks, with more shipments set to dock in the following weeks" according to Electric Cars Report: "The new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been engineered to meet the latest emissions regulations and comfortably qualifies for the government plug-in car grant thanks to its WLTP emissions of 46g/km and EV range of 28 miles, while also attracting the lowest possible BIK rate of 13 percent." The first batch of 200 will soon be followed by another 2000.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/07/first-shipment-of-2019-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-arrives-in-the-uk/   DAIMLER TO BUILD BATTERY FACTORIES IN SINDELFINGEN, UNTERTUERKHEIM "Daimler AG on Wednesday said it will add battery manufacturing capabilities to its Mercedes-Benz plants in Sindelfingen and Untertuerkheim, as the carmaker seeks to transition from combustion to electric cars." reports an Autoblog article: "The battery deal is part of a 1.5 billion euro ($1.75 billion) transformation plan to retool Mercedes-Benz plants to build zero-emission and autonomous vehicles, the carmaker said."   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/07/25/daimler-battery-factory-sindelfingen-untertuerkheim-germany/?guccounter=1     BARBADOS EMBRACES EVS Crippled with public debt and dogged by rising oil prices, the island's new government wants to make its bus network electric, and eventually switch all government transport too." reports Reuters: "Increased state investment in electric buses would help upgrade transport systems, while cutting climate-changing emissions and paving the way for consumers to follow. Plug-in vehicles could also "piggy-back" on a push to inject more power into the grid from renewables like solar, wind and hydro. Costs are high, however, and on some islands, import duties for electric vehicles are higher than on combustion-engine cars."     COMMUNITY Battery On Board Stickers! Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 25th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   TESLA EMPLOYEE TWEETS ABOUT PRODUCTION RATES Elon Musk tweets about Tesla's production rates, the challenges, the successes. Dave from accounts does NOT. Linda from HR does NOT. John from the Gigafactory does NOT. Except, John Totah did exactly that yesterday. John Totah is the Lead Material Flow for Model 3 at Gigafactory 1 and a Twitter account using his name, so we're assuming it is really him, make some bold claims before they were swiftly deleted. John said: "Our original goal was 2,500/wk and we didn't hit it. Now we just hit 5,000/wk throughput in June. Insanely hard work by @Tesla team." If you didn't know that’s exactly the kind of language and tweet we would get from Elon. You know, the CEO. One of a handful of people on the planet who can comment publicly on Tesla. And not just because they're being precious but because the Q2 production and deliveries, whether batteries or completed cars, is potentially the most important announcement in the history of the company. This is the last week of the quarter. On the bright side that's a doubling in two months so understandably he's proud. He even had time to send a follow up, before he found the delete button: "We want to sustain over 5k/wk since current capacity of the lines are built for a max 6k/wk. It was incredibly difficult to hit 2500 in March. We revised many processes and built new systems that worked better. Incredible work and brain power." As you may have heard before on the podcast, when I was talking about the production lines heading from Tesla Grohmann Engineering in Germany to Nevada, to fix one of the four zones, that was when Elon replied directly to me to confirm it. Super exciting, so we knew they had a shutdown to speed up Gigafactory. And once JB Straubel was tasked with sorting out Zone 4 at Giga, and it would amazing new if true before batteries were a bottleneck at one point. He wasn't clear on his tweet whether the throughput was specifically about his area of responsibility, or overall Model 3 production rates at Giga. And remember none of this means Freemont is on target for 5,000 Model 3's week. The twitter account has now been protected. The news was reported on Reddit, Electrek etc, so I feel it can be reported on.   ANOTHER TESLA INTERIOR UPDATE InternetDude: "So I finally got my 2018 Tesla Model S P100D. I ordered it with cream interior but it was supposed to have figured ash dark wood. Tesla made a production change just about 10 days after I ordered and changed almost all of the aluminium accents to dark graphite colour instead. They also changed to the wood to a natural oak decor finish, more like the Model 3."   MAD MAX MODE FOR AUTOPILOT LANE CHANGE Elon has tweeted a picture of the centre display with the car running in 'development mode'. Within Feature Settings you can now enable Mad Max mode in the 'Blind Spot Threshold'. He also joked: "We considered going beyond Mad Max to “LA Freeway” level, but that’s too loco". It follows his retweeting of an old post from 2017 from a twitter user which photoshopped a Tesla Semi into a Mad Max type future. The current options you can see in Dev Mode are Standard, Aggressive and Mad Max. He also talked about how a self-driving car is programmed to yield in the event of a conflict: "It’s a tough call. Reality is that it will be pretty easy to bully a self-driving car, as it will always yield. Will prob have a manual override that requires continuous press for hardcore lane changes." Surely this will be part of Version 9 software coming this Autumn with self-driving features. So whereas currently you initiate a lane change with the blinker, it's your call to ensure the road is clear, this is a hint towards more autonomy. The other options you can see now are “Follow Nav,” “Blinker to Fork,” “Enable ULC,” and “Vision Stops."   CAR MAGAZINE - MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REVIEW: A STRONG CASE FOR HYBRIDS CAR Magazine UK: "we headed out to Provence, France, for a spin to see how the changes stack up. This engine revision plus work on the battery – which gets 10% more power output and total capacity of 13.8kWh thanks to new cells and better management - has allowed Mitsubishi to recalculate maximum electric range, fuel economy and CO2 emissions for new-age, more realistic WLTP testing, and the results are more impressive for that reason. We’re talking 30 miles on electric power, 141mpg and 46g/km. You’re also able to drive faster on electric power – now 84 rather than 78mph. ts PHEV tech is so effective, in fact, that it’s set to be rolled out to larger Renault and Nissan models in the coming years as that new alliance comes to fruition. In return, pure EV bits from the Leaf will go the other way and be used on smaller Mitsubishis."   https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/mitsubishi/outlander-phev/   FIRST 350KW CHARGER OPENS IN GERMANY Fastned are a charging network here in Europe with 73 stations in and they just posted a Twitter video of their first station opening in Germany. That's the first of 18 in Germany this year but goal is in the hundreds. They say it's in the A3 at Limburg an der Lahn and if you have a car which can take advantage of slightly faster speeds like a Hyundai IONIQ or Jaguar I-PACE you'll be pleased to hear they're 350 kW DC chargers. The charging station is covered in solar panels too, and all of the energy they source is renewable. Bart Lubbers is the co-founder of Fastned and said: "In the next few years, German car manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes will introduce fully electric models that can charge at high power. This is a great challenge and opportunity for the automotive industry and charging companies like Fastned.” We heard recently Fastned also have plans for the UK and Belgium.   ITALY AIMS TO PASS NORWAY AS EUROPE'S NO. 1 EV MARKET Bloomberg broke the news yesterday: "The populist government in Italy, Europe’s most sluggish market for electric cars, has a big-bang plan to put 1 million of the vehicles on the nation’s roads. Getting anywhere near that target could cost the state $10 billion in incentives." com: "Italy’s new populist government has a plan to put 1 million electric vehicles on the nation's roads by 2022 in an effort to go from being the region's weakest EV market to replacing Norway as its strongest. Italians last year bought just some 2,600 full-electric cars, out of a total of about 2 million vehicles sold, and the number rises only to around 4,800 if plug-in hybrid models are included, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Fewer than 5,000 full-electric models are estimated to be on the country's roads today. And that's the problem, critics say. To go from being an EV backwater to Europe's biggest market, the Italian government would need to roll out incentives at least at the level of Norway's, which could cost several billion euros, analysts say. Even that might not be enough."   JAGUAR LAND ROVER'S £13.5BN INVESTMENT Times Of India report: "Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has lined up investment worth 13.5 billion pounds in the next three years on new models, technology development and capacity addition. The investments will be on new models, technology, capacity with significant amount of it on electrification and on a new platform" JLR said: "Our roll out to MLA will be fully complete by 2025, at which point every product can cater for an ICE (internal combustion engine), BEV (battery electric vehicle) or PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) derivative."   NEW PEUGEOT 308 PHEV COMING IN GTI FORM French motoring site Caradisiac says the next gen Peugeot 308, which you'll be able to buy in 2020, will rely on electric power for GT and GTi status. The GT model most likely to couple up a gas engine with electric motor both driving 220 hp to the front wheels. Whilst the GTi will add an electric motor to the rear axle for AWD and 300hp.   ELECTRA MECCANICA CONTINUES COMPLIANCE TESTING FOR SOLO EV The SOLO is priced at $15,500 USD, and interested consumers can place a fully-refundable $250 deposit by visiting EMVauto.com. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 20th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   CORRECTION: NORWAY'S ELECTRIC PLANE TOOK OFF First of all I can't begin without sorting out my mistake yesterday because I’m an idiot. And I need to learn which day of the week is Monday. On yesterday's show I talked with you about Norway’s electric plane taking off next Monday. Think again genius. It took off last Monday. Reuters reports: "Transport Minister Ketil Solvik-Olsen and Dag Falk-Petersen, head of state-run Avinor which runs most of Norway’s airports, took a few minutes’ flight around Oslo airport in an Alpha Electro G2 plane, built by Pipistrel in Slovenia. "Norway aims to be 100 percent electric by 2040 for all short-haul flights. Avinor, which is responsible for the country's 44 airports, has bought the electric aircraft used Monday. The operator plans to launch a tender offer to test a commercial route flown with a small electric plane with 19 seats, starting in 2025."   https://phys.org/news/2018-06-peek-future-electric-plane-cruises.html   SMALL FIRE, ELON ASKS STAFF TO REMAIN VIGILIANT IN THE FACE OF SABOTAGE Tesla said in an email that on Sunday night there had been a "Smouldering in an air filter in the welding area of the body line. The smouldering was extinguished in a matter of seconds. There were no injuries or significant equipment damage, and production is back online." The company did not specify the location of the fire, which Reuters was unable to independently confirm. And then came the really big news about sabotage. "I was dismayed to learn this weekend about a Tesla employee who had conducted quite extensive and damaging sabotage to our operations. This included making direct code changes to the Tesla Manufacturing Operating System under false usernames and exporting large amounts of highly sensitive Tesla data to unknown third parties. The full extent of his actions are not yet clear, but what he has admitted to so far is pretty bad. His stated motivation is that he wanted a promotion that he did not receive. In light of these actions, not promoting him was definitely the right move. As you know, there are a long list of organizations that want Tesla to die. These include Wall Street short-sellers, who have already lost billions of dollars and stand to lose a lot more. Then there are the oil & gas companies, the wealthiest industry in the world — they don't love the idea of Tesla advancing the progress of solar power & electric cars. Don't want to blow your mind, but rumor has it that those companies are sometimes not super nice. Then there are the multitude of big gas/diesel car company competitors. If they're willing to cheat so much about emissions, maybe they're willing to cheat in other ways? Please be extremely vigilant, particularly over the next few weeks as we ramp up the production rate to 5k/week. This is when outside forces have the strongest motivation to stop us. Looking forward to having a great week with you as we charge up the super exciting ramp to 5000 Model 3 cars per week!"   2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV WLTP-RATED 45 KILOMETERS OF ELECTRIC RANGE AutoEvolution is one of a few outlets today reporting on the updated Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: "A significant update over the previous model year, the Outlander PHEV tops at 135 km/h (84 mph) in all-electric mode compared to the old version’s 125 km/h (78 mph). But being a plug-in hybrid, it’s best to drive the mid-size utility vehicle at lower speeds in order to maximize the efficiency of the drivetrain. In addition to the mechanical improvements, electric range also goes up to 45 kilometres (28 miles) on WLTP." The battery gets a bump to 19.5kWh.   WHY GHOSN'S RENAULT PAYCHECK DEPENDS ON EV SALES Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn has a new incentive to promote development and sales of electric vehicles: A significant part of his pay now depends on it." according to AutoNews.com: "Under the new pay plan, 30 percent of Ghosn's long-term incentives depend on electric-vehicle sales (shareholder return, free cash flow and alliance platform transition, another new category, make up the rest). An increase of 5 percent over internal forecasts will earn him the full 30 percent, but if sales meet targets, he will get only 21 percent." "last year the company sold 36,000 all-electric vehicles, including about 32,000 Zoe compact hatchbacks (the remainder were almost all Kangoo small vans). That was an increase of about 10,000 from 2016."   HOW BIG WILL THE BATTERY BOOM GET? TRY $548 BILLION, BNEF SAYS "Batteries will attract $548 billion in investments by 2050 as costs fall and homes and businesses push to use more clean energy" according to Mark Chediak at Bloomberg.com: "That’s one of the conclusions of the New Energy Outlook released Tuesday by analysts at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Batteries will become increasingly viable on the grid as demand for electric cars spurs manufacturing of lithium-ion systems, driving down prices. Batteries will allow more solar and wind to meet demand -- even when the sun isn’t shining or wind isn’t blowing, helping end the era of fossil fuel dominance on the grid by mid-century, BNEF said. Battery prices are expected to fall to $70 a kilowatt-hour by 2030, down 67 percent from today, according to the report. BNEF expects 1,288 gigawatts of new batteries to be commissioned by 2050."   SMART CHARGING COULD DELIVER EVS A DECADE EARLIER "Smart charging of electric vehicles (EVs) could cut the cost of integration into the UK power system by over £1 billion compared to standard charging, according to a new report that also found running an EV could be ten times cheaper than a conventional car." on CurrentNews.co.uk: "On top of the financial advantages to grid operators, Vivid Economics also argues such action would have a direct benefit to consumers, who could save substantial amounts on their annual car bill." The report says: "“The smartness of the transition to electric vehicles will be the main factor determining how cost effective the transition is, not the speed of the transition" One the big unknowns when it comes to modelling the grid is how much we'll be using Vehicle 2 Grid on our EVs.   OFF GRID ENERGY CEO HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF BATTERY STORAGE Danny Jones is the founder and CEO of Off Grid Energy and has stressed the importance of battery storage and smart charging systems as the take up of electric vehicles. He says: "The benefits of deploying these systems are manifold and are absolutely necessary to prevent a delay in EV deployment because of the cost and lead-in times to reinforce the electricity network at substations, not to mention they can start working right away with minimal installation time needed."   CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT LEADING THE CHARGE TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Christchurch Airport is the first business in the South Island to sign up to a global initiative, EV100, committing to transitioning its vehicle fleet to 100% electric." "The airport already has eight electric vehicles (EVs) so its fleet is currently 40% electric. It also hosts Yoogo an EV sharing scheme for community use. EV100 is an initiative of The Climate Group, an international not-for-profit based in London, New Delhi and New York, with the mission of accelerating climate action. EV100 members commit to becoming 100% electric by 2030."     COMMUNITY Youtube comments. Wednesday 21st February 2018. On the podcast today… coming up we’ll talk about electric hyper cars and we’ll pick on Australians, but just a little.   We’ll start with news about a possible new commercial vehicle, now stay with me because this isn’t a sexy way to start. I promise the next story will be all speed and smoke and wheel spin. I think commercial vehicles are really important to electrify because they do a lot of miles in places where pollution is high.   Your own car might sit on the driveway or outside work for most of the day, whereas a working vehicle is always on the go. This is also really important for last mile situations, around cities, where pollution levels are so high they cause respiratory disease.  Now, have you seen the new London black cab?   If not, pause this and go and watch the Fully Charged episode recently. And I know I keep talking about Jonny Smith – I promise I don’t want to kiss him. Much.   However Chinese EV owner Geely have ploughed hundreds of millions into the range-extended new Black Cab, which costs just £10 more a week to lease but saves you £100 in fuel. No brainer. Now Geely want to use the platform and powertrain to change the taxi dimensions into a van, add a passenger seat up front, and bring it to market.   Spy spots featured on Motor1.com show it heavily camouflaged but with the unmistakeable front end. According to them the conversion is costing $42million which is small change in terms of bringing releasing a new vehicle.   https://www.motor1.com/news/233531/london-taxi-testing-commercial-vehicle/   Next I promised something faster than a van. What about a Koenigsegg? Maker of insane sport cars from the mad hypercar brain of Christian von Koenigsegg. They have a new plug-in hybrid called the Regera which he says is “on the bleeding edge of EV technology”.   According to leftlanenews he was so impressed by the instant torque of a Model S, he incorporated batteries into the drivetrain of his next hypercar. Yes it comes with a dirty 5.0 liter V8 but also three motors, and electric acceleration up to 30mph. He says it’s probably the most advanced EV in the world, but doesn’t get the headlines for being so because of the ICE. The battery pack is only 70 kilos but helps generate 700bhp. As for a full electric version, he says “that technology is getting better and better very rapidly”.   https://www.leftlanenews.com/koenigsegg-expects-to-build-all-electric-car-eventually-99943.html   Mitsubishi are making a moderate upgrade to a very important car. The new Outlander PHEV will be available from autumn and it has been a huge success for those wanting to add electrons to dino juice.   They’ve sold 100,000 of them in Europe, and 140,000 worldwide. For the new model they’re increasing battery performance by 15%. But there’s not need to brace yourself, in real numbers, that’s a battery pack going from 12kWh to a dizzy 13.8kWh. However it’s welcome, it’s a popular car, and it’s very handy to plug in to the growing CHAdeMO fast chargers. Although suggesting a PHEV using one might get me hate mail.   https://www.electrive.com/2018/02/20/mitsubishi-presents-new-outlander-phev-suv-concept/   However Mitsubishi want to show they’re serious about full electric cars, so fresh from the Tokyo Motor Show they’re heading to Geneva Motor Show with the e-EVOLUTION concept which will lay out their direction and thinking. 4 wheel drive, three motors, and electronically controlled torque vectoring – which I’ve no idea what that is, but I definitely need it in my life.   https://insideevs.com/new-2019-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-with-15-more-battery-capacity/   Talking of Geely earlier, according to GasGoo.com they’re introducing 20 new energy vehicles by 2020. Just to put that in perspective, that’s 22 months away. They’ll practically release a new model a month and everyone is so used to the pace of EV news lately, it’s not even front page news. In fact it got trumped today by a VAN to be top story! In 2018 watch out for the Emgrand EV 450 and the Emgrand PHEV, as long as you’re in China of course. They say two thirds of their range in the future will he plug ins or hybrids, and around a third will be pure electric cars.   http://autonews.gasgoo.com/new_energy/70013721.html   The first of two stories about oil now, and tomorrow in Germany, their top court could hand down a landmark ruling on Diesels, which will accelerate EV growth there. The environmental group DUH sued Stuttgart and Dusseldorf over levels of particulates.   Local courts ruled the worst diesels could be used on heavy pollution days, which the German states appealed against. So tomorrow we’ll hear if the ban stands, and if so, could wipe huge values off diesel cars, the diesel makers and inspire more people to drive electric.   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/02/19/german-court-diesel-bans-car-value/   Secondly BP (British Petroleum) have released their annual Energy Outlook report. They say travel demand will double by 2040 mainly due to increases in personal mobility in China and India. BP predict todays 3million EV’s will grow to 320million by 2040, which would be 15% of the worldwide fleet of cars. And shared mobility will accelerate that, because self-driving cars will be electric thanks to lower cost of maintenance and ability to recharge themselves via wireless charging. In 2016 the total fuel demand from cars was 18.7million barrels of oil per day which is one fifth of total oil demand. BP also predict electric cars will be driven 2.5x more than ICE cars.   https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-oil-bp/bp-sees-self-driving-electric-vehicles-crimping-oil-demand-by-2040-idUKKCN1G41XK   Finally, if you listen to an EV podcast I’m guessing you’re a fan. But so this isn’t a little echo chamber with you and me banging battery drum, let’s take a look at today’s Sydney Morning Herald. They point out that all is not well with EV’s because they’ve done some maths.   Charging your electric car from the grid in Australia means a Tesla (the paper doesn’t say which model, does it matter? Maybe not) would emit 168 grams of CO2 per km, versus a Toyota Corolla at 178 grams, a Renault Zoe at 121 grams and a Toyota Prius at 84 grams per km. But let’s look at that – charging from the grid. Because those numbers seem way too high. And you what? They are. Because your grid, and I’m talking to any Aussies listening, is disgusting.   The average greenhouse gas intensity is 910kg of CO2 per MWh. That’s insanely high. Are you literally just burning whatever you can lay your hands on? Australia is one of the sunniest countries on the planet why don’t you all have solar panels? You see them everywhere where in the UK, a country that officially has 5 sunny days per year. Every other day it’s cloudy and it rains. And we still have solar. The UK grid intensity for Summer 2017 was 216 kg CO2/MWh.   Get some solar Australia! It’s what you’re good at. Take Norway, or Iceland, or Paraguay, they all have grid intensity
