APRIL 2025 NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURESAs expected, the new car registration figures for April 2025, were down following the jump in March prior to the tax changes. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) explained how there was a ten percent drop, year-on-year. However, BEV and PHEV registrations rose, but are not near the levels needed to comply with the ZEV mandate. Once again the SMMT called on the Government to assist the industry and buyers. GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR SUNDERLAND BATTERY FACTORYThe planned factory, by AESC, in Sunderland, which will make batteries for Nissan is to receive Government funding. £350 million has been allocated, with an expectation of a thousand well paid jobs, according to the chancellor Rachel Reeves. You can find out more, by clicking this Sunderland Echo article link, here. NISSAN CANCELLING JAPANESE BATTERY FACTORYNissan is not going to build the planned battery factory in Kitakyushu, Japan. This will save the company $1.1 billion, it is reported. If you wish to read more, click this Yahoo Finance article link here. UK - INDIA TRADE AGREEMENT ANNOUNCEDDetails are a bit sketchy, but the UK and Indian Governments announced that they had reached a trade agreement. One beneficiary is the car industry or at least those who produce “high end cars”, whatever they are. Until more information is more forthcoming it is difficult to confirm if it is good or not. The electrification transition and inflexible EV production quotas are taking a heavy toll on the automotive industry, but buses and commercial vehicles posted their best years since 2008. Will Stirling reports. MTD magazine is unwaveringly positive in its coverage of manufacturing news, but facts are facts: automotive manufacturing is on a downward slide. Combining cars and commercial vehicles (CVs), the UK produced 905,233 units in 2024, -11.8% from 2023, and slipping below the psychologically important one million units mark. Electric vehicles now comprise over one-fifth of all new car registrations, but the EV market contracted by 2.5% to 139,345 units. The bright spots are in the commercial vehicle (CV) and bus markets. Production in the UK rose 4% to 125,649 units, and both buses and CVs have had their best years since 2008. Carmakers face a multitude of challenges to produce both ICE (combustion engine) and EV cars in high volume. Higher energy and material costs, shortage of skilled people and potential tariffs on exports to the US, but the two most significant factors affecting the production of cars are the costly transition to electric and globally softer demand. The government has set onerous targets for the proportion of EVs that car companies make in Britain, from 22% last year to 28% this year – a tall order that experts believe won't happen – and 80% by 2030, after which the ICE car ban kicks in. The problem is that these targets are running ahead of demand. “The targets were set when demand forecasts were much higher; we know there'll be a significant shortfall,” says Professor David Bailey, an automotive business expert at the University of Birmingham. “Car firms are going to struggle to shift that volume of cars without very significant discounting, and therefore losses.” He adds: “Our two biggest producers, Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover, will struggle to meet that kind of stretched targets as they get bigger, so they will potentially be fined, and they may well have to buy credits from Chinese all-EV makers who can hit the target. So what a perverse policy that is – that you're subsidising the Chinese and fining domestic manufacturers.” Electric vehicle production and net zero targets have not been intelligently assessed. The government intends to phase out new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, and although the car industry was invited to consult on this in December 2024, many think the target is too early to hit. “The 2030 ban on ICE policy was plucked out of thin air to try to differentiate the UK from the European Union while signalling to investors that the UK is serious about decarbonisation to encourage investment in the UK. But it hasn't worked – because Brexit has made the UK less competitive and attractive, because of high energy costs, and it hasn't worked because we don't have a proper industrial strategy to support that transition,” David says. The government is now consulting on the industrial strategy, but it should have been firmly embedded in 2025 to help hit the 2030 ICE ban effectively. Stimulate demand; cost of electrification bites Demand for electric vehicles needs to be higher. The government has proposed cheap loans for EVs, but it sounds too complicated for the average car buyer, who wants to know the price, not a complex subsidy and loan. And a VAT break on EVs has been proposed, although this is a pro-tax government. “The government's problem is that it has boxed itself in agreeing to continue the fiscal rules that the Conservatives put in place, which I think was a bad mistake all along, and that has limited their room for manoeuvre. The industry wants a fiscal incentive for EVs, which could either be an upfront discount if you buy one or a VAT reduction on purchases and charging, to stimulate demand,” Bailey says. Demand for vehicles aside, car production volumes are also lower because factories spend millions of pounds and months retooling their lines for EV manufacture, affecting their ability to produce. Internalisation of component manufacturing Some tier one and smaller suppliers to UK automotive have gone, due partly to the complications and costs of Brexit. GKN Automotive moved its Birmingham factory capacity to Poland in 2021/2022. A lot of smaller companies have been cut out of European supply chains post-Brexit, and several auto suppliers have struggled or gone out of business, unable to cope with the export and reimport bureaucracy when some components may cross the English Channel several times before being assembled here. In addition, several big carmakers are internalising the manufacture of key components as these companies aim to be more vertically integrated. “Partly, this is in reaction to the semiconductor crisis where firms were caught out,” says David Bailey. “For example, Jaguar Land Rover will be making its new electric drive train in-house, probably at the i54 plant. Previously, for internal combustion engine cars, JLR would have bought the drives from GKN Driveline, but it is internalising it. We are seeing that shift broadly as well.” A good example is Nissan's partnership with battery company AESC, which supplies directly to Sunderland. This year, Nissan is expected to open a new 360m long, 23x football pitch-sized battery gigafactory in Sunderland. When operational, it will employ over 1,000 people and deliver a sixfold increase in UK electric vehicle battery production. The plant is basically an extension of Nissan's car factory, a tier-one supplier part-owned by Nissan right next door. Pay attention, subbies: Bus bonanza Deliveries of new buses, coaches and minibuses reached a 16-year high in 2024, with 8,390 new units hitting the UK's roads (total buses produced were higher due to healthy exports). Demand rose across the three main segments: minibuses, single-deckers and double-deckers, with minibuses posting 102.5% year-on-year growth. Zero emission is the main story in buses, and the UK is still Europe's biggest zero-emission bus market, with deliveries up by more than a third in 2024. As of 2023, Ballymena-based bus manufacturer Wrightbus reported a turnover of £283.4m, a significant 71% increase from £163.3m in 2022. Despite this, profits in 2023 were negative, probably reflecting the big investment in transitioning to net zero powertrains and new tooling. Wrightbus exemplifies the switch to zero emissions. “Alongside our market-leading EV bus, 95% of all buses produced by Wrightbus in Ballymena are now zero emissions – a marked change on 2019, when 95% of all orders were for diesels,” said Jean-Marc Gales, CEO of Wrightbus, when unveiling the new Streetdeck Hydroliner Gen 2.0 hydrogen-powered bus on 20 February. Wrightbus says production will increase to 1,200 this year and then again to 1,400 in 2026 – a record in the company's proud history of bus manufacture. Dozens of suppliers from across the UK and Europe visited the Wrightbus factory in February to hear how the firm's continued growth will act as a shot in the arm for the manufacturing sector, with the expected creation of up to 1,000 new supply chain jobs in the next two years. When will car making recover? Industry body The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders forecasts vehicle production to fall further in 2025 (cars and light vans to 839,000 units in 2025). Still, it adds that while the EV transition is affecting production, this will be temporary. While the volumes of all electrified technology cars were down 20.4% in 2023, with more than £20 billion worth of investment announced in 2023 and a further £3.5 billion in 2024 to support the UK's transition, the decline will be temporary; the SMMT stated in February. Car and light van output will increase to circa 930,000 units by 2027, it says. However, potential tariffs from the US are a real threat (second biggest UK car export market), and the lingering cost of living crisis affects EV sales. “Charging at home overnight is cheap but can be 10 times the cost at some public charging points. Plus there is 20 percent VAT at a charging point, but just five percent at home – so the one third of people who have no ability to charge at home will struggle with the transition,” says David Bailey. And while the Dept for Transport has said it is on track to install the target 300,000 charging points by 2030, many people have range and charging speed anxiety, so much more PR is needed to persuade a cash-strapped, conservative public to go electric.

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 28th June. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. HONDA WILL BUILD ITS OWN ELECTRIC VEHICLE - Although General Motors will build Honda's first two fully electric vehicles for North America, the Japanese automaker plans to change course and manufacture its own later this decade. - Company officials say they're developing their own EV architecture, and after two GM-made EVs go on sale in 2024, Honda will start building its own. - Honda and GM have been partners on hydrogen fuel cell and electric vehicles. Earlier this year they announced that GM would build one Honda SUV and one Acura SUV using its Ultium-branded electric vehicle architecture and battery system. The company said the Honda SUV would be named the Prologue - both SUVs will have bodies, interiors and driving characteristics designed by Honda.   Original Source : https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-technology-electric-vehicles-environment-and-nature-business-2b96916e9e6ce43fc55ab4455a97d419   CHINA: LFP BATTERY SHARE FOR MIC TESLA MODEL 3 REACHES 88% IN MAY   - According to very interesting insurance data released by EV Observer (via Moneyball), Tesla Model 3 sales in China are dominated by the version with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries. Tesla produces in China two versions of the Model 3 that, as far as we know, are equipped with LG Energy Solution's NCM batteries or CATL's LFP batteries - The data - assuming it is correct - indicates that the SR+ version stands for a record share of 88% of all Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3 sold in China in May 2021 - One of the most interesting things is what will happen once Tesla introduces the entry-level Model Y with LFP batteries? According to rumors, such a version might be launched in July   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/516453/china-lfp-share-tesla-model3/   NISSAN MAY CONFIRM THIS WEEK IT IS BUILDING A BATTERY PLANT IN UK   - Nissan Motor Co will confirm as soon as this week that it will build a battery gigafactory in Sunderland, northeastern England, as part of its electric vehicle strategy, a reporter for broadcaster Sky News said on Monday. - Japanese media firm Nikkei reported last month that Nissan would partner with China-based battery maker Envision AESC group to build new battery plants for electric vehicles in Japan and United Kingdom.   Original Source : https://www.euronews.com/2021/06/28/uk-nissan-electric-britain   Revealed: I understand Nissan will confirm as soon as this week details of its EV strategy for the UK, including the construction of a battery gigafactory in Sunderland - paving the way for thousands of the Japanese company's electric cars to be built in Britain every year.   Original Source : https://twitter.com/MarkKleinmanSky/status/1409455006600814596   RENAULT SIGNS EV BATTERY DEALS WITH ENVISION, VERKOR FOR FRENCH PLANTS   - Renault said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the French start-up Verkor to co-develop and then manufacture high-performance batteries, with a view to owning a more than 20 percent stake in Verkor. - "The combination of these two partnerships with Renault ElectriCity will create nearly 4,500 direct jobs in France by 2030, while developing a robust battery manufacturing ecosystem in the heart of Europe," Renault said in a statement. - Renault's electric vehicle production hub, with sites at Douai, Maubeuge and Ruitz, is expected to produce 400,000 cars a year and create 700 additional jobs in the region. With the French state as its most powerful shareholder, Renault has come under pressure to preserve jobs and keep EV technology in the country. - The automaker currently buys batteries for its Zoe model from an LG Energy Solution factory in Poland, an arrangement that will carry over to the coming Megane EV lineup planned for next year, according to the statement. - Renault is also still talking to Stellantis' battery joint venture with energy giant Total, called Automotive Cell Company, about a potential third battery tie-up for around 2027, according to its statement.   Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/renault-signs-ev-battery-deals-envision-verkor-french-plants   Renault confirms battery deals with AESC and Verkor - electrive.com   - Renault now officially confirms that Chinese battery manufacturer Envision AESC will build a battery factory at Renault's Douai site in northern France - a total capacity of 43 GWh is targeted by 2030, of which Renault is to purchase 24 GWh. The batteries from Douai are to be used in the future in the electric R5, among other vehicles. - “Our battery strategy builds on Renault Group's ten years of experience and investment in the electric mobility value chain,” expresses Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group. “The latest strategic partnerships with Envision AESC and Verkor greatly bolster our position as we ensure the Europe-based production of one million electric vehicles by 2030. This marks a major milestone as we strengthen our competitive edge, by rooting our Group in the underlying momentum of French industry and striving to reach our carbon neutrality objectives. The Group thus reaffirms its willingness to produce popular, affordable, and cost-effective electric cars in France.”   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/28/renault-confirms-battery-deals-with-aesc-and-verkor/   CHINA'S ENVISION TO BUILD RENAULT $2.4 BILLION BATTERY PLANT   - French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to unveil the agreements on Monday at Renault's assembly plant in Douai, where the Envision battery plant -- the first in Europe for the company that also makes wind turbines -- will be located. Ahead of a national election next year, Macron is seeking to reap political advantage from the prospect that some 4,500 jobs could be created by 2030 at the EV hub situated in a region that has long suffered from industrial decline.   Original Source : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-27/china-s-envision-to-build-2-4-billion-battery-plant-for-renault   RIVIAN SHOWCASES R1T CAMP KITCHEN'S FEATURES IN NEW VIDEO   - Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe shared a video showcasing the R1T's camp kitchen feature recently. The Rivian R1T modular camp kitchen seems to deliver as promised, with a full set of utensils and a makeshift kitchen sink to boot. - The entire kitchen comes in three modules, stored in the electric pickup's Gear Tunnel. The R1T camp kitchen includes an induction cooktop for at least two pots or pans and a removable sink with a hose reel to rinse off dirty dishes, utensils, food, and more. - The sink seems to be attached to a water tank module. It does not have a drain but can be detached to throw out the water. The sink could also be used as a basket when removed from its module based on the video. The sink's cover seems like it also functions as a cutting board. - The R1T's kitchen modules are easily detached from the Gear Tunnel shuttle, which is 65” long, 18.1” wide, and 20.3” in height. It includes features like LED lighting, a 12V outlet, a 110V outlet, and a safety release.   Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-r1t-camp-kitchen-features-video/   BRITAIN AIMS TO CAPTURE £8BN ELECTRIC CAR SPENDING SPREE   - Britain aims to seize on an imminent £8bn spending spree by international manufacturers to “catch the wave” of electric cars, Boris Johnson's investment tsar has revealed. The City grandee Lord Grimstone, who now leads the Government's Office for Investment, told The Telegraph he is in discussions with a raft of potential investors in the UK to capitalise on an “auto-Renaissance”. - Investment decisions are due from Japanese carmaker Nissan over a new gigafactory in Sunderland for electric car batteries. Stellantis, the owner of Vauxhall's Ellesmere port, has held talks over making electric vehicles on the site. The South Korean duo LG and Samsung are also reportedly in discussions over major gigafactory investments, while West Midlands carmaker JLR is looking to source batteries from a UK plant. - Lord Grimstone said: “I think we are in the middle of what I call the “auto-Renaissance” because all the manufacturers have been caught out across Europe and the UK by the speed at which the customer - not the manufacturer, not the Government - is moving towards electric vehicles. “Every single one of them I talk to - all of them - are changing their production schedules, bringing forward new models and reconfiguring their whole global footprint. - “This is a huge opportunity for the UK. Out of this kind of massive change, you are either going to catch the wave, or if you don't it is not going to be there for another 20 or 30 years.”   Original Source : https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/06/26/britain-aims-capture-8bn-electric-car-spending-spree/   2023 AUDI E-TRON FACELIFT RUMOURED TO GET NEW BATTERY, MORE RANGE   - The automaker began delivering the E-Tron crossover in 2019, and that model is due for a mid-cycle refresh. However, instead of the usual design tweaks automakers make, Audi is rumoured to be updating the electrified powertrain, too. - Not only will the E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback receive a new battery, which will increase its range, but the two will also receive improved electric motors that are more efficient. Autocar's sources say that the E-Tron will deliver more than 373 miles of range for both variants. The current 95-kilowatt-hour battery delivers 249 miles of range in the UK.   Original Source : https://uk.motor1.com/news/516603/audi-e-tron-battery-update/   VOLKSWAGEN IS #1 IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES ACROSS THESE 10 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES   - Looking across the same 10 European countries as before — Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland — the clear brand leader is Volkswagen, with 18.3% of the pure electric vehicle sales across those 10 markets. That's nearly one out of every five electric vehicles sold in those 10 countries. - Tesla, still carried by just the top-selling Model 3, is #2, holding 10% of EV sales. Renault is not far behind, with 9.2% EV market share, but expect Tesla to grow its lead notably in June, and probably further through the end of 2021. Peugeot (7.7%) and Hyundai (6%) round out the top 5.   Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/06/27/the-top-electric-vehicle-seller-in-europe-is-volkswagen/     Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

Show #504   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 18th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new PRODUCER DAVE GINNANE.   Hello to Richard Graham: "By the way, what would you think about doing a Model 3 delivery day special? i.e follow a Tesla customer on their delivery experience and post delivery first impressions etc. I would volunteer myself but I suspect my M3 might only be delivered July/August so the excitement may have died down by then."   NEW NISSAN LEAFS AVAILABLE IN EUROPE "The latest versions of the Nissan Leaf are now available for purchase in Europe. This includes the longer range Leaf e+, as well as the conventionally updated Leaf. First deliveries have already begun." says electrive: "The Leaf e+ has already marked over 8,000 orders since it’s January reveal. With a 62 kWh battery, provided by AESC, and a 160 kW electric motor. The starting price here goes for €45,000. The basic new Leaf starts at a price of €35,400 and features a 40 kWh battery for 40% less range compared to the larger version. Both vehicles still charge using CHAdeMO with 70 kW standard charge and a 100kW peak. Following the “Rapidgate” charging scandal, the software for the vehicles was undated to ensure longer and more stable battery life."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/18/new-nissan-leafs-available-in-europe/   TESLA’S OWNER-VOLUNTEERS FROM CHINA MOBILIZE TO HELP END-OF-Q2 DELIVERIES "Tesla’s second-quarter deliveries in China are getting a rather unexpected boost, thanks to a number of electric car owners who are volunteering their time to help the company hand over as many vehicles as possible before the end of the month. Tesla is currently attempting to set new delivery records this Q2, and it would take every one of its delivery teams across the globe to dig deep to achieve its goal of beating Q4 2018’s numbers. The fourth quarter, after all, was a time when Tesla delivered more than 90,000 vehicles globally." says Simon at Teslarati: "As could be seen in the efforts of Tesla owners in China, this willingness to help the company is not only true for electric car owners in the United States. Even in a place such as China, where the Model 3 only started deliveries earlier this year, owners are volunteering their time to help out the company. "   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-china-owners-help-model-3-deliveries-q2-2019/   NORWAY UPDATES: SUBARU, MAZDA, & FORD SALES PLUMMET "Norwegian Twitter user Tesla Driver tweeted an article from the daily Norwegian business paper Finansavisen (behind a paywall) that highlighted more bad news for car companies slow to electrify in Norway." according to CleanTechnica: "Subaru sales are down 66% in 2019, Mazda sales are down 45% in the last 3 years, and Ford sales are down 50% in the last 10 years. In case you missed it, last month we reported on layoffs at a leading Mercedes dealer due to its lack of competitive products. Automakers and dealers slow to electrify are suffering. Toyota and Hyundai have stopped selling hydrogen cars in Norway. The manufactures were forced to get loaner cars to the few people who had purchased hydrogen cars, since all the hydrogen fuel stations are closed while the government investigates an explosion at a hydrogen fueling station."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/17/norway-updates-subaru-mazda-ford-sales-plummet-hydrogen-car-sales-frozen-tesla-sales-jump/   GERMANY TO SUPPORT THREE BATTERY CELL ALLIANCES "Germany will support three company alliances with earmarked funds of 1 billion euros for the domestic production of battery cells in an effort to reduce carmakers’ dependence on Asian suppliers, Economy Minister Peter Altmaier told Reuters." says an article today on Reuters UK: "Among the more than 30 companies that applied for state funding at the German Economy Ministry are carmakers Volkswagen and BMW, as well as German battery maker Varta and Swedish battery manufacturing startup Northvolt. France and Germany have already asked the European Commission to approve state subsidies for a cross-border battery cell consortium including carmaker PSA, its German subsidiary Opel and French battery maker Saft."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-europe-batteries-germany/germany-to-support-three-battery-cell-alliances-economy-minister-idUKKCN1TJ1LC   2020 MINI COOPER S E ELECTRIC CAR'S REVEAL DATE ANNOUNCED "Although we've pretty much seen the production 2020 Mini Cooper S E electric hatchback, we've been in the dark about when the car, and more importantly its specifications, will officially be revealed. But now the company says we'll see it on July 9, just a few weeks away." write Joel for Autoblog: "We're most anxious for confirmation on performance specifications. In our prototype drive, we learned that the motor is based on the one from the BMW i3S, so it should make about 181 horsepower, just 8 shy of the gas-powered Mini Cooper S. But the range estimate given during the prototype drive was a rather low 120 miles."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/18/2020-mini-cooper-s-e-electric-car-reveal-date/   PORSCHE CEO PRAISES TESLA In USA Today, Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Porsche North America writes: "Tesla has made inroads, but now I believe we are approaching a turning point. In coming years we will see more widespread adoption as volume producers including General Motors, Nissan, and VW join with premium brands like Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche to launch numerous battery-only models. As more Americans experience the instant power and sporty handling that electric cars provide, more will want this new generation of electric vehicles. First, Tesla has proven there is significant demand for cars that combine sustainability with performance and design. Last year, the Model 3 outsold any other premium sedan in the U.S. We know that American consumers embrace new technology, especially if it delivers a new experience. And once a technology catches on, consumers respond well to expanded choice as competitors enter the field. Just look at how many models of SUV you can buy today, or the proliferation of smartphones since Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007.”   POLESTAR 1 PROTOTYPE REVIEW "The Polestar hybrid set-up with the limited lifespan is based on a 2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged, supercharged petrol engine. On its own it produces 304bhp – although an integrated starter-generator adds a useful extra 67bhp and tries its hardest to improve response." says evo when reviewing the Polestar 1: "Then at the rear, there’s a pair of electric motors, delivering four-wheel drive and another 228bhp again. The final tally? Some 599bhp. The powertrain can operate in a number of modes, including that pure-electric focus, a hybrid setting where the car manages the mix and focuses on efficiency, and a performance configuration that uses all available power sources. The system can also top up the battery while on the move, allowing you to build up enough charge during a long journey for zero-emissions running at your destination."   https://www.evo.co.uk/polestar/22796/polestar-1-prototype-review-a-hybrid-alternative-to-the-bentley-continental-gt   LEVC REVEALS NEW RANGE-EXTENDED LIGHT COMMERCIAL VAN LEVC’s new commercial vehicle, a zero-emission capable light van, draws on more than 70 years of knowledge from the same company that manufactures the world’s only purpose-built range extended electric taxi. Based on the same architecture and proven e-City range extender technology as LEVC’s TX taxi, of which there are now just under 2,000 on the roads – the vast majority in London – this second vehicle from LEVC will give operators and drivers huge amounts of flexibility with an electric range of 80 miles and a combined petrol and EV range of 377 miles. Targeting those who travel around 100 miles a day, LEVC’s LCV will offer ‘distribution to door’ – not just last mile – providing the link between out of town depots and city centres, capable of collecting goods outside of a major city in range extender mode, before switching to EV mode in an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone. This is currently a sector of the market dominated by one tonne medium size diesel vans.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #467   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 10th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ALREADY MORE THAN 10,000 REGISTRATIONS FOR THE ID.3 "At a press event held yesterday in Berlin, Volkswagen launched pre-booking in Europe for the first model in its new full-electric ID. model family, the ID.3. Customers’ interest in the special edition, the ID.3 1ST, which is limited to 30,000 vehicles, is significantly exceeding the brand’s expectations. Sometimes, the IT systems are unable to handle the large number of users accessing the system at the same time. This leads to long waiting times and interruptions in the registration process in some markets. Volkswagen is working hard to eliminate the hitches. Nevertheless, more than 10,000 registrations were received throughout Europe during the first 24 hours."   VW ZWICKAU PLANT ON SCHEDULE AS ID.3 ROLLS OUT "The transformation of the VW Zwickau site into a purely electric car plant is fully on schedule. According to VW, more than 200 ID.3 pre-series vehicles have already been successfully produced." reports electrive.com: "Volkswagen claims that this is the world’s first electric transformation of a large conventional car factory. In the future, the Zwickau plant will only make e-vehicles based on the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) and have a production capacity of 330,000 vehicles a year."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/10/vw-zwickau-plant-on-schedule-as-id-3-rolls-out/   DYSON PATENTS AND MEMO OFFER A CRYPTIC TEASE OF ITS FIRST EV "Sir James Dyson has revealed some early details about the company's electric car in a memo sent to employees and seen by Bloomberg and The Telegraph. A set of patents that recently became public also includes diagrams that make it seem like the vehicle will look like a Range Rover. " according to Engadget today: "While we might have to wait a bit before seeing a prototype, the company has reportedly sunk billions into the project, which already has 500 personnel. It's designed in house, after all, and will be manufactured -- in a facility in Singapore -- and sold by Dyson itself. Details unfortunately remain scant despite the sketches, but the billionaire's memo said testing will ramp up in June and that the EV is on track for launch in 2021."   BP CHARGEMASTER PLANS 100 NEW 150 KW CHARGERS IN UK THIS YEAR "British charging company BP Chargemaster (BP acquired the Chargemaster in 2018) announced a plan to install 400 ultra-fast charging stations in the UK by 2021. The first batch of 100 150 kW chargers will be installed by the end of 2019, at 50 locations (most likely at BP fuel stations) starting from July." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com. Whereas Autocar says: "The rollout will help future-proof the UK’s charging network, as currently very few EVs are capable of charging at 150kW. Audi’s e-tron is one that is, and its 95kWh battery can be charged to 80% in around 30 minutes. Companies such as Pod Point, Fastned and Ionity all claim to be rolling out chargers capable of supplying power at 150kW and above, but there’s currently only a handful that are operational in the UK. BP Chargemaster’s announcement is the biggest commitment so far as a result. "   https://insideevs.com/news/348682/bp-chargemaster-100-new-chargers-uk/   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/bp-chargemaster-install-100-ultra-fast-ev-chargers-year   SEAT ROLLS OUT ITS ELECTRIC OFFENSIVE IN BARCELONA SEAT celebrates its 69 years of history and is participating this year in the 100th edition of the Automobile Barcelona, where it has rolled out its vision of electric mobility with its two new concept cars – the first ever fully electric SEAT el-Born and the SEAT Minimo, a forward-looking approach that aims to become the companion of cities and revolutionis urban mobility. Moreover, CUPRA is also displaying the new CUPRA Formentor, the brand’s own first model, as well as the e-Racer, the first ever fully electric touring racecar. The el-Born concept car is the first SEAT that has been conceived as an electric vehicle and it is scheduled for market launch in 2020. SEAT will be the Volkswagen Group’s second brand to make a model on the MEB platform, whose assembly line is set to turn out a new generation of vehicles based on the market’s most advanced electric and connectivity technology. With a practical range of between 300 and 420 km thanks to its 58 kWh battery, this vehicle is ready to travel beyond urban limits.   BMW'S ELECTRIC SUV SPIED UP CLOSE WITH INTERIOR SHOWING "BMW's next electric vehicle, which will likely be named either the i5 or, appropriately enough, the iNEXT, was spied during testing. These photos don't reveal a lot about the exterior styling of the upcoming electrified crossover, but we do have our first look at the interior of the new BMW. At this point, we have absolutely no details about the powertrain in this new vehicle. All we have are these excellent close-up photos from our spy photographer." according to Cam for Motor1.com: "while we've gotten used to referring to this project as either the i5 or the iNEXT, the steering wheel appears to say "iNEXT" on it if you look closely. It's a small, blue, rhombus-shaped badge placed below the poorly-disguised BMW emblem."   https://www.motor1.com/news/349028/bmw-inext-interior-spy-shots/amp/   ENVISION AESC'S NCM 811 BATTERIES TO EXCEED 300 WH/KG IN 2020 "Envision AESC, formerly AESC (Automotive Energy Supply Corporation) acquired by Envision Group from Nissan (which still holds some 20% of shares), announced new 5th generation NCM 811 batteries." says InsideEVs: "Over nine years, AESC supplied more than 430,000 battery packs for electric cars (more than 90% to Nissan), having three manufacturing plants around the world with a total capacity of 7.5 GWh annually. In the longer term, the company hopes to decrease the battery cost to $50/kWh in 2025"   OPEL CORSA FULLY ELECTRIC VERSION READY TO ROLL "The new generation of the Opel Corsa will celebrate its world premiere on 4 June and can be ordered as a fully electric version from then on. In an interview, Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller promised an “attractive price” for the E-Corsa but did not specify any details." says Carrie at electrive: "At the end of last year, Opel announced its intention to open the order books for the new electric Corsa and the Grandland X as plug-in hybrids in the first half of 2019. The Corsa is likely to have the same technical data as the DS 3 Crossback. Lohscheller promised a competitive price for the market launch, which could be as early as December: “With the new Corsa, we are making e-mobility affordable for a wide range of customers. This will be a real “Volks” electric car.”   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/10/opel-corsa-fully-electric-version-ready-to-roll/   FERRARI HYBRID SUPERCAR CONFIRMED EVO reports on Ferrari adding batteries to their next car: "Ferrari has confirmed it will reveal a new V6 hybrid supercar in a matter of just weeks, after CEO Louis Camilleri made mention of the new model’s imminent arrival during the firm’s Q1 investors’ financial call. The new supercar will be the first series-production hybrid from Ferrari, after the strictly limited LaFerrari, and will combine its new electrified components with a new V6 power unit."   https://www.evo.co.uk/ferrari/22636/ferrari-hybrid-supercar-confirmed-mclaren-has-been-put-on-notice   TESPLAYER BRINGS SPOTIFY ACCESS TO TESLA MODEL S, 3, X OWNERS "Tesla owners finally have a way to play Spotify in their Model S, Model X and Model 3 thanks to third-party, browser-based app ‘TesPlayer‘ that can manage playlists and play music directly from the vehicle’s center touchscreen." according to Simon at Teslarati "Tesla uses Spotify as its provider of choice in Europe, though vehicles in the United States are equipped with Slacker Radio instead. While Slacker is impressive on its own right, it falls short when compared to Spotify and its insanely vast plethora of content."   https://www.teslarati.com/how-to-play-spotify-tesla-music-streaming/   TESLA MODEL 3 TRACKER: CUMULATIVE PRODUCTION EXCEEDS 250,000 InsideEVs has been looking at the Bloomberg Tracker and Model 3 just hit a big number: "Today, Bloomberg’s Tesla Model 3 Tracker shows for the very first time that a quarter million Tesla Model 3 have been produced cumulatively. The counter stands at 250,276 Model 3 produced, out of which about 218,612 was confirmed by Tesla at the end of March 2019. Read more about Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 9th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new Producer of the podcast ANDY HALL thank you being part of the Patreon family.   NISSAN LEAF E+ BRINGS MORE POWER, MORE RANGE So by now you may have seen the news online the long awaited Nissan LEAF has a new longer range variant. Well, it will do later in 2019 when you can finally get one. Here's everything I’ve been able to dig up for you, and some of my thoughts based on the first 12 hours of reaction. Let's start with what the same, everything you can see! Exterior will have a new badge and interior has an 8" screen rather than 7". You will charge it with CHAdeMO and not CCS. First up from InsideEVs, clarity on the name and when you can get one: "Nissan LEAF e+ is the global name for the car, but particularly in the U.S. and Canada, Nissan would like to name the top of the line version – the LEAF PLUS Series. There will be three trim levels: LEAF S PLUS, LEAF SV PLUS and LEAF SL PLUS. Market launch plan: Japan – January 2019, U.S. – Spring 2019 (pricing to be announced closer to on-sale date) Europe – Mid-2019. Battery - it's 62kWh not the 60kWh we were led to believe, or even the 64kWh assumed when rumours last year pointed towards them using LG Chem packs. "Even with a 25 percent increase in energy density and the increase in energy storage capacity, the LEAF e+ battery pack is almost the same size and configuration as the pack in the Nissan LEAF. Other than a 5-millimeter increase in overall height (16-inch wheels), the car’s exterior and interior dimensions are unchanged" says Nissan So that range is 226 miles (364 km) EPA range vs 151 miles (243 km) for the 40kW version. Nissan says: "Thanks to the available new 70 kW (100 kW peak) Quick Charging system, the 2019 Nissan LEAF e+ can charge more efficiently than ever.*3 Based on early testing, Nissan LEAF e+ owners can expect similar charging times when hooked up to a 100 kW charger as current LEAF owners do with a 50 kW charger, despite a 55 percent larger battery storage capacity.” Motor: the 160kW motor us up from 110kW, a 36% increase. They are drawing our attention to the 50mph-70mph difference.   Pricing: The base Nissan LEAF e+ will start from ¥4,162,320 (around $38,370). In the case of Europe, Nissan announced two Limited Edition versions for “old” and new version: LEAF 3.ZERO (40 kWh) – from €39,900 (orders now, deliveries from May). LEAF 3.ZERO e+ (62 kWh) – from €45,500 (orders now, deliveries from Summer).   If you add the same premium to US prices it should be ~$35k.   ZERO gets the bigger screen and phone mirroring, and colours. And it's available to order now.   Nissan says: "“The Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition will also be available to order from January 9 across European markets. This limited edition – of which only 5,000 units will be produced for Europe – will feature a higher output capable of delivering 160 kW (217 PS) and longer range capabilities with expected driving range of up to 385 km* from a single charge."   Forbes says: "The battery continues to be supplied by AESC, Nissan’s in-house battery division that is in the process of being sold to China's Envison Group. Like all prior iterations of the Leaf it is still air-cooled, running contrary to the industry conventions. Also contrary to some earlier speculation, Nissan hasn't switched to LG Chem as a cell supplier."   https://insideevs.com/nissan-reveals-leaf-e-plus-ces/   https://insideevs.com/nissan-announces-leaf-e-price-europe-japan/   https://www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2019/01/08/2020-nissan-leaf-plus-crosses-the-200-mile-threshold/#341706836ece     MINI PLOTS MAIDEN HOT HATCH EV FOR 2019 REVEAL "Mini’s first electric car will also be the industry’s first electric hot hatch, engineering sources in Germany have revealed." says Mark Tisshaw for Autocar: "Rather than a sole focus on economy and eking out range, Mini is developing its electric car with performance in mind. To that end, the model will be badged Cooper S E when it is unveiled later this year to reflect its performance hierarchy in the Mini range. The BMW i3 S’s 181bhp electric motor is understood to be the most likely power source for the new Mini, meaning it will give little away to the 189bhp 2.0-litre engine of the Cooper S." The drivetrain won't include BMW's 5th generation technology though.   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mini-plots-maiden-hot-hatch-ev-2019-reveal   NINE IN 10 ELECTRIC CAR DRIVERS WOULD NEVER GO BACK TO PETROL "Almost nine in 10 electric vehicle drivers would never go back to driving a car powered by petrol or diesel, according to new research" reports Motor1.com: "A study by electric vehicle YouTube channel Fully Charged found that 88 percent of plug-in car drivers said they would definitely not switch back to fossil fuels after having owned an electric vehicle (EV). Seven percent of those quizzed said they were not sure whether they would turn back to internal combustion, while the remaining five percent said they would consider making a return to petrol- or diesel-powered cars. However, just under a quarter of the channel’s audience (24 percent) said they currently owned an electric car, with the vast majority (54 percent) claiming to own a petrol-powered vehicle. Diesel was the second most popular fuel, accounting for 35 percent of viewers, while a combined total of 11 percent were the owners of petrol hybrids or plug-in hybrids." With 7,700 taking part in the survey it's a large number.   https://uk.motor1.com/news/299997/ev-drivers-wont-return-petrol/   MERCEDES EQC GETS SAMPLED BY JAY LENO "Until it actually makes market debut, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz EQC gets the Jay Leno treatment." according to DriveMag: "Naturally, Mr. Leno drives an EQC 400 4Matic in prototype guise and for more background on the EV, he takes Bastian Schult (Powertrain Testing Engineer at Mercedes-Benz) for a ride. Now, you might already know that the EQC relies on an 80-kWh battery pack that allows for a max range of 280 miles (450 km) on a single charge, with power coming from two electric motors that make together 408 PS (300 kW)"   MERCEDES EQC ELECTRIC SUV TO COST FROM UNDER £50K IN THE UK? .."The new Mercedes EQC – Mercedes’ electric SUV aimed at the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron – looks set to cost from under £50k when it arrives in the UK." speculates CarsUK.net: "When Leno asked the Mercedes man how much the EQC would cost in the US, he didn’t have an answer. But he did say that in Europe it will cost about the same as the Mercedes GLC 43. Which, in the UK, starts at £48,960. If the Mercedes man is right, you’ll be able to grab an electric Mercedes SUV with 400bhp, 0-62mph in around 5.0 seconds, an 80kWh battery pack and a range of over 200 miles for £15k less than an I-Pace and £20k less than an e-tron."   http://www.carsuk.net/mercedes-eqc-electric-suv-to-cost-from-under-50k-in-the-uk/   FIRST AUDI E-TRON DELIVERIES IN GERMANY FEBRUARY Talking of the e-tron, Mark Kane at InsdeiEV's.com published a story today: "So far, several hundred cars were registered in the first few markets, but it turns out that customer deliveries will not happen this month. According to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), first customers in Germany will get the e-tron in February. If Audi does not sort out its problems with the e-tron launch, it will be overtaken in Europe by Tesla Model 3, which also should hit the market in February."   https://insideevs.com/first-audi-e-tron-deliveries-germany-postponed/   TOYOTA PUSHES HYBRIDS DESPITE SLOWING GAS-ELECTRIC AUTO SALES "Don't tell Toyota the once hot gas-electric hybrid vehicle is losing its appeal." says CNBC: "The automaker is planning to leverage its dominance in hybrid autos as it grows the number of full- and hybrid-electric vehicles sold in the U.S. and around the world." Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales for Toyota North America "We are working on an entire portfolio of hybrids which we have been selling since 1997, plug-in hybrids, full battery electric vehicles as well as our fuel cell vehicles. Those vehicles represent about 9 percent of our sales in 2018. We have set a goal that it will be 15% of our sales next year in 2020."   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Wednesday 21st March 2018.   NEWS IN BRIEF First up some headlines. The Tesla Semi prototypes are continuing their real-world tour of the United States. The silver one has just been spotted at the Dallas, TX service centre. Where will it turn up next? The New York Times says: Prosecutors in Munich searched BMW’s headquarters on Tuesday as part of their continuing investigation into an emissions-cheating scandal. Munich prosecutors said in a statementthat they were investigating whether the software in some BMW diesel models functioned like so-called defeat devices”. BMW said in a statement: “In the course of internal testing, the BMW Group realized that a correctly developed software module had been allocated in error to models for which it was not suited,” Nissan LEAF sales are closing in on 10,000 per month and 100,000 yearly if you were to do a crude multiplication by 12. February numbers are looking strong with almost 4,000 in Japan and Europe each, coming in at 6.5% of all Nissans sold in Europe. Add in almost 1,000 more in the US that’s heading towards 10,000 in February alone. If Tesla can’t sort their issues, it could be the Model 3 in 2018, which would have been unthinkable last year. I’m still banking on Tesla getting to 5,000 cars a week from July so that would push Model 3 way in front. Playing devils advocate, you could say Nissan has three factories, Japan UK and US, with established supply chains and experience, so 3,000 per factory in a month doesn’t blow your socks off. In the UK the Plug In Car Grant of £4,500 off the price of a new BEV STILL officially ends in 10 days time, with the government saying something will continue from April onwards. This is just embarrassing now. Next week will see a panel discussion on whether California should ban all combustion cars from 2040. It’s being chaired by the GreenBiz and Verge writer Katie Fehrenbacher, and she’s asking for your opinion if you’re a Californian podcast listener – send your thoughts to katie@greenbiz.com Hyundai IONIQ pure Bev sales were down in February, with 1,531 sold worldwide. It’s hard to work out why, demand is pretty high for it judging by anecdotal evidence. They could be building slowly, or deliberately holding back because there’s a long range IONIQ BEV coming before the end of 2018. Or maybe there’s no conspiracy theory, and Hyundai are just busy, because the Kona deliveries are dues to start in their domestic market of South Korea in April. Pedro from Push EV’s published an article saying the current 40Kwh LEAF was a stop gap, which I thought was harsh, but he has good reasoning. Old cell chemistry, no thermal management, AESC now being an external battery supplier since Nissan sold it, all pointing towards a very conservative BMS which throttles rapid charging to be on the safe side. And today in my timeline I’ve seen two examples of new LEAF owners charging very slowly on rapids, when it’s only 2 or 3 degrees Celsius here right now. Rapid charging isn’t essential, look at the Zoe and how well it sells, but it’s something I’ll watch. And finally for news in brief, the Model 3 Owners Club tweeted a new option that has appeared in the Model 3 configurator. The 20” sport wheel and Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber is available for $4000 extra.   WILL YOU GO EV FOR EARTH HOUR? The WWF say: “climate change is the biggest future threat to people and nature around the world, especially in the polar regions. If we don’t up our action on climate change, we could lose almost 50% of species from the world’s most precious places by the end of this century.” That’s why they’re asking you to mark Earth Hour with a pledge to make your next car an EV. And if you own an electric car, why don’t you let a friend use it for a journey they would otherwise take in an ICE car during the earth hour? Get then insured for the day, and give them a taste of the power, silence and efficiency of an EV.   ELECTRIC CARS THE NEXT BIG THING According to Bo Bai, CEO of the private equity U.S.-China Green Fund, electric vehicles is the next big investment: "Solar technology has been there for a long time. China has gotten wholeheartedly into it. Reduced the cost to a ridiculous level right now to break even on many areas, many regions. Electric vehicles, it's similar. The technology has advanced to a certain stage with mass production and logistics management. The cost is reducing very substantially," He predicts a ripple effect that’s coming very soon, as price levels come down to a level that’s low enough.   WHEN DID THE EV REVOLUTION START? Last week Tesla celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the start of Roadster production. But when do you think the beginning of the modern era of electric cars was? According to CarBuzz, the Geneva Motor Show this month was the real start to the mainstream era of EVs. 12 new electric cars were showcased, not concepts or pretty sketches. These are production-ready cars from car companies a lot bigger that Tesla. Well, bigger in terms of how many cars they make, even if not the share price! The best news about the I-PACE is that production has started and models will soon be shipped around the world. The Audi e-tron is months away from production – or whatever I’m meant to call it. The most recent name seems to be the e-tron Quattro SUV, which highlights not only size and propulsion, but also because Audi are using e-tron for their next electric cars. So I must stop calling it just the Audi e-tron. Honda confirmed the Urban EV won’t be a million miles from the concept and the suicide doors will stay. My favourite, the Hyundai Kona, was showed off with it’s 64.5 kWh battery, LG Chem cells with thermal management so rapid charging should be OK, and we heard that from July the first 2,500 will be heading to Norway first. I would disagree that the VW VIZZION is coming soon, it’s didn’t have an interior and was basically four lovely seats from the IKEA catalogue and some very thick shagpile carpet. VW say it’s the future of motoring, I say the carpet looked nicer than the one in my bedroom.   TOSHIBA NEXT GEN BATTERY Toshiba recently unveiled a li-ion battery which they claim charges fully in just six minutes, delivering a 200-mile range on a full charge. Toshiba's next generation SCiB lithium ion battery replaces the conventional lithium titanium oxide anode with a titanium niobium oxide anode. The new battery maintains the longevity of the previous older configuration, promising a life cycle of 14 years, assuming a full charge and discharge cycle per day.    I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
