Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl

This is the story of a three-year-old girl and the highest court in the land. The Supreme Court case Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl is a legal battle that has entangled a biological father, a heart-broken couple, and the tragic history of Native American children taken from their families. We originally released this story back in 2013, when that girl's fate was still in the balance of various legal decisions. We thought now was a good time to bring the story back, because the Act at the center of the story is still being questioned. When then-producer Tim Howard first read about this case, it struck him as a sad but seemingly straightforward custody dispute. But, as he started talking to lawyers and historians and the families involved in the case, it became clear that it was much more than that. Because Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl challenges parts of the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act, this case puts one little girl at the center of a storm of legal intricacies, Native American tribal culture, and heart-wrenching personal stakes.LATERAL CUTS:What Up Holmes? The GatekeeperEPISODE CREDITS:Reported by - Tim HowardProduced by - Tim HowardEPISODE CITATIONS (so many):Background and Reporting from a range of different perspectives"Couple forced to give up daughter"An introductory article by Allyson Bird, for the Charleston, SC Post and Courier"Supreme Court Takes on Indian Child Welfare Act in Baby Veronica Case" A report for Indian Country Today by Suzette Brewer, who has also written a two-part series on the case."Supreme Court hears Indian child custody case"Tulsa World article by Michael Overall which includes Dusten Brown's account of his break-up with Veronica's mother, and his understanding about his custodial rights. In return you'll get a whole extra Take 2 alongside Take 1 every week, with bonus reviews, more viewing recommendations from the Good Doctors and whole bonus episodes just for you. And if you're already a Vanguardista, we salute you.  Our very special guest from the small screen this week is Aimee Lou Wood. The White Lotus star is back on British screens this month in ‘Film Club'—a BBC rom com that celebrates the healing power of love and, of course, movies. Wood has co-written the series too, and she sits down with Simon to unpack it. She shares what her writing debut has taught her, how she's channeling the spirit of classic rom coms and bringing back “neurotic chatterboxes falling in love”. We might even have a scoop on her next big writing project...     Plus Mark reviews the week's most exciting cinema releases. First up, ‘The Smashing Machine'—Benny Safdie's UFC fighter biopic starring The Rock as you've never seen him before. Plus, the much-anticipated directorial debut from Harris Dickison—who you'll know from ‘Triangle of Sadness', ‘Scrapper', ‘Babygirl' and more. His social realist tale ‘Urchin' stars Frank Dillane as the homeless Mike—and it looks an indie treat. Last but not least, another nail-biter from Kathryn Bigelow, ‘A House of Dynamite', which charts the terrifying moments following a nuclear missile launch headed towards the US. Not soothing viewing.     We're keeping the banter coming too though with the Laughter Lift and the Good Doctors' thoughts on your stellar correspondence—plus news of our upcoming LIVE Christmas Extravaganza! It's a solo ep!  First up, Rihanna's baby girl announcement, and the internet's relief that her family is now “complete.” It speaks to the deep cultural obsession with gender balance and the right we think we have to comment. Gender disappointment is real, and so are the constant judgements about whether our families are “enough.” I share my own experience as a mum of three boys, and why envy and expectation around gender tell us more about society's scripts than our own worth. Then we shift to Bravo, where fractured friendships aredominating every franchise. RHOM ends with bonds in tatters, RHOSLC opens with explosions, and RHOC is still stuck in cycles of betrayal. Why do friendship breakups cut so deep, and how do we process that grief when the people wethought we'd have forever suddenly aren't there? Two conversations that ask: whose script are we living by,and what happens when those scripts fall apart? Thank you to our wonderful audio engineer/producer, Sam Talbot, as always. Connect with the show:Instagram: @jana.firestoneWebsite: janafirestone.comYouTube: Jana Firestone on YouTube

Send us a textNavigating the complex journey of being an "outside father" requires extraordinary commitment, unconditional love, and raw honesty. This deeply personal episode pulls back the curtain on fatherhood from a distance, revealing both its heartbreaking challenges and profound rewards. When my daughter called me upset because a boy at school called her unattractive, I responded with straightforward wisdom rather than empty comfort. "Is he attractive?" I asked. When she said no, the lesson was clear: "Then what does his opinion matter?" These moments of unfiltered guidance create the bedrock of trust our children need, especially daughters growing up in a world constantly testing their self-worth.The distinction between being a biological father and being a true "daddy" forms the emotional core of this conversation. As I learned from my own godfather who told me at my lowest moment, "I'm your daddy, I love you, and I'll love you until the day I die," real fatherhood transcends blood. This powerful truth—that blood doesn't make family, bonds do—shapes how I parent my own children despite the physical distance between us.Perhaps most gut-wrenching is the reality of temporary time together. When your child looks up with tears saying, "I don't want to go back, daddy, I want to stay with you," there are no perfect words. But through consistent calls, unwavering support, and showing up however possible, we demonstrate that love isn't diminished by distance. For anyone navigating co-parenting, separation from their children, or wondering how to maintain meaningful connections despite physical absence, this raw conversation offers both comfort and practical wisdom.Support the show

Hey lady! As many of you know a healing journey is more than face masks and bubble baths. It's a deeply personal cultivation of all of your life's experiences and the tools you've picked up along the way. It's the way you find yourself to wholeness and build a life of meaning and fulfillment and it is hard and cyclical and takes effort. It takes real courage to get into the insides of yourself and choose to grow, but it's possible and it's worth it.This week, Dr. Dom and Terri invite Dr. Raquel Martin, a licensed clinical psychologist and host of the Mind Your Mental podcast, to discuss the rigorous path to living a healed life and the enrichment and reward of finding a path that works for you. Mental health and therapy are buzzy right now but those words are more than a passing fad. Dr. Raquel offers a unique perspective via straight talk to illuminate how people can find a path to mental wellness that feels authentic for them. Sometimes that may be boundaries, sometimes that means finding a mental health professional to work with, but all of the time it requires divorcing our thoughts from the patriarchal and colonial constructs that we use to build our realities. Babygirl, that is neither easy nor is it quick work but it is necessary for lasting change.Wise words were once spoken that it all starts with looking ourselves in the mirror. When we begin to do the tough work of having honest conversations with ourselves, being real about our needs and untangling the deep wounding we have as a people we can begin to see more light in our lives so that we can be the light out in this world. Dr. Raquel may not be accepting clients but if you are ready to amplify your healing with support book a consultation with Dr. Dom or check our resources below for the right option for you! It's just Kevin and Lauren this week and they manage to keep it pretty tight with some Squid Game talk, Call me Izzy, Smoke, Baby Girl, and Ironheart. They open the show by discussing the first half of the new season, as Lauren has watched 4 of the episodes and Kevin has only watched 3. The review is definitely favorable and the two make their predictions about the finale, both with differing ides about where it could end up! Next up, Lauren takes us to Broadway with Call Me Izzy. It's a one owman show starring the always incredible Jean Smart. It tackles the tough topic of abuse and is delivered wonderfully in a way that only Jean Smart can do. If you're in the New York area and aren't looking for the most uplifting story, this one is worth catching. Kevin takes us back to the small screen with Smoke, the new series on Apple TV+. It follows 2 arson investigators, played by Taron Eggerton and Jurnee Smollett. They are tracking 2 separate arsonists while dealing with their own issues on the home front. Only the tow episodes have aired so far but it seems to be an excellent investigative series and has a great twist at the end of the second episode.  Continuing the recent trend of "we watched it so you don't have to," Lauren watched Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman. It's the tale of a highly successful business woman seduced by a younger man and the messiness that ensues. All in all, it doesn't do much to reinvent the wheel and leaves a lot to be desired, even in the genre of steamy romance. Kevin closes out the show with a review of the first 3 episodes of Ironheart on Disney+. The story of Riri Williams is carried over after Black Panther 2 and is surprisingly very solid so far. This is a character that Kevin did not enjoy in her previous appearance, but he's been impressed with the work done in this outing and he's enjoying it so far, even going as far as calling it one of the better Marvel shows.  As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture

Diddy's $150K Gifts to Trafficking Victim - Why She'd Return Every Dollar The Sean "Diddy" Combs federal trial reached a breaking point during June 12-16, 2025, with five earth-shattering moments that could determine whether the hip-hop mogul spends life in prison or walks free. In this comprehensive breakdown, we expose the most crucial testimonies, evidence reveals, and courtroom drama from what legal experts are calling the most pivotal week of the entire trial. Federal prosecutors unveiled devastating evidence including six firearms with defaced serial numbers found near alleged "freak off" supplies at Diddy's Los Angeles mansion. Homeland Security Agent Marc LaMon's testimony revealed AR-15 rifle parts stored alongside lubricants and drugs allegedly used in sex trafficking operations. The defense argued these weapons were properly secured by professional staff, but prosecutors painted a disturbing picture of a criminal enterprise where violence and coercion were always within reach. The week's most emotionally charged moment came when key witness "Jane" concluded six days of harrowing testimony about alleged forced sexual encounters. In an unprecedented courtroom scene, she hugged both prosecutor Maurene Comey and defense attorney Teny Geragos before glaring directly at Combs. Jane testified she would return over $150,000 in gifts and financial support to never participate in what Combs allegedly called "hotel nights" again, revealing the true cost of her alleged victimization. Jonathan Perez, Combs' former personal assistant, delivered immunity testimony that could make or break the prosecution's racketeering case. He detailed procuring cocaine, ketamine, molly, Adderall, and Xanax from dealers nicknamed "Guido" and "Babygirl," presenting text messages showing $700 payments for drugs. However, the defense scored a crucial victory when Perez admitted these activities represented only 1% of his job duties, potentially undermining the government's criminal enterprise theory. The trial took an unexpected turn when Kanye West made a surprise 40-minute courthouse appearance, arriving in a black Mercedes-Maybach wearing all white. Unable to enter the main courtroom, Ye watched proceedings from the overflow room before departing without comment, adding celebrity spectacle to an already high-stakes legal drama. Judge Arun Subramanian's controversial decision to dismiss Juror #6, a Black corrections officer, sparked accusations of racial bias from the defense team. The dismissal over alleged residence deception could provide grounds for appeal if Combs is convicted, highlighting how jury composition issues continue to complicate high-profile cases involving prominent Black defendants. #DiddyTrial #SeanCombs #SexTrafficking #FederalTrial #TrueCrime #JusticeSystem #HipHop #KanyeWest #LegalAnalysis #BreakingNews Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?  Check out our YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@hiddenkillerspod Instagram https://www.instagram.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Tik-Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@hiddenkillerspod X Twitter https://x.com/tonybpod Listen Ad-Free On Apple Podcasts Here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/true-crime-today-premium-plus-ad-free-advance-episode/id1705422872
