Publisher Kris Millegan speaks with is Dr. Gregg Wager and attorney Barry Bachrach about Dr. Wager's book, AQUASH'S MURDER: Hermeneutical and Post-Modern Legal Analysis in Light of the Murder of Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash (feisty American Indian Movement activist). Months before Aquash's murder, a deadly gun battle between AIM members and two young FBI agents forced her to flee with her friend and fellow agitator Leonard Peltier. Although Peltier always denied FBI claims that he was the one who delivered coup de grâce shots to the agents, he was eventually convicted of double murder. This prompted unsuccessful popular movements for a Presidential pardon as inept lies from both sides helped stalemate any legal or political progress.

As Pride season continues with festivals, parades, and increased nightlife, there is a community within our LGBTQ+ family that continues to thrive and grow, gaining a stronger voice in the last decade – that of our sober community. Pride celebrations now include safe spaces and events that cater to those on their journey from addiction, the stigma towards our sober family and the assumption that they can't party with us is being diminished. Yet, there is still a long way to go. Because of our battle with discrimination, isolation, gender identity, and abandonment, the LGBTQ community struggles with substance abuse at a rate of two to three times that of the general population. Alarmingly, up until now, there have been zero facilities dedicated to our particular needs. Enter Rainbow Hill, founded by Southern California-based couple Andrew Fox and Joey Bachrach. The two, inspired by their own journey in recovery, left lucrative careers in real estate to open the doors of Rainbow Hill Sober Living in 2021, and, this summer, Rainbow Hill Recovery, an intensive outpatient treatment center in the Los Angeles area.In this episode, we chat about how these two met and got Rainbow Hill off the ground, we talk about addiction in the LGBTQ community, advice for friends and family of those suffering addiction, relapse rates, spreading the message of sobriety, the services that Rainbow Hill has to offer, and what the future of the organization holds. Hosted by Alexander Rodriguez. You can find out more about Rainbow Hill RainbowHillRecovery.com Check out our in-depth article with Andrew and Joey at Metrosource.com
Religious texts are not stable objects, passed down unchanged through generations. The way in which religious communities receive their scriptures changes over time and in different social contexts. Emilia Bachrach's Religious Reading and Everyday Lives in Devotional Hinduism (Oxford UP, 2022) considers religious reading through a study of the Pushtimarg, a Hindu community whose devotional practices and community identity have developed in close relationship with Vārtā Sāhitya (Chronicle Literature), a genre of Hindi prose hagiography written during the 17th century. Through hagiographies that narrate the relationships between the deity Krishna and the Pushtimarg's early leaders and their disciples, these hagiographies provide community history, theology, vicarious epiphany, and models of devotion. While steeped in the social world of early-modern north India, these texts have continued to be immensely popular among generations of modern devotees, whose techniques of reading and exegesis allow them to maintain the narratives as primary guides for devotional living in Gujarat-the western state of India where the Pushtimarg thrives today. Combining ethnographic fieldwork with close readings of Hindi and Gujarati texts, the book examines how members of the community engage with the hagiographies through recitation and dialogue in temples and homes, through commentary and translation in print publications and on the Internet, and even through debates in courts of law. The book argues that these acts of "reading" inform and are informed by both intimate negotiations of the family and the self, and also by politically potent disputes over matters such as temple governance. By studying the texts themselves, as well as the social contexts of their reading, Religious Reading and Everyday Lives in Devotional Hinduism provides a distinct example of how changing class, regional, and gender identities continue to shape interpretations of a scriptural canon, and how, in turn, these interpretations influence ongoing projects of self and community fashioning. Joining me fr this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is Tom Bachrach, CIO of PFH Capital, a value investing partnership in the Philadelphia area. Several of Tom's letters to his investors caught my eye in recent months and so I invited him onto the show to talk to me about how an investor looking for undervalued, sustainable businesses goes about navigating the new investment landscape - one of rising rates, falling inflation and ever-escalating madness. Our conversation took numerous twists and turns from value investing to debt and, eventually, onto energy and each of those turns made for highly thought-provoking discussion. Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. Copper Tier subscribers get access to all podcasts, while members of the Silver Tier get both the podcasts and my monthly newsletter, Things That Make You Go Hmmm… Gold Tier subscribers have access to my new series of in-depth video conversations, About Time.

Nate is joined by Taylor Bachrach, who makes a strong case for why we should lower the voting age to 16 and, at a minimum, send Bill C-210 to a parliamentary committee for further study. Taylor makes the argument that the government is facing some of the most consequential decisions in history with respect to the lives of young people and that we, therefore, ought to give young people a say in the future they will face. Taylor Bachrach has represented the riding of Skeena-Bulkley Valley since 2019. Prior to entering federal politics, Taylor served as municipal councillor in the Village of Telkwa and as mayor of the Town of Smithers.

So there's no shortage of the ways that companies use celebrities nor in the different applications in the various disciplines, advertising, marketing, PR, sales, promotion. — @RicBachrachIn every single case, it's the same thing: The celebrity serves as the vehicle for the dissemination of corporate messages. — @RicBachrachOne of the things that I always counsel my clients on right out of the gate is the understanding that they are not buying a new best friend. — @RicBachrachThey can now be compensated by a brand or by an organization for the use of their name, their images, their likenesses — @RicBachrachNIL is here to stay; the challenge with it right now is that it's unchartered territory — @RicBachrachAbout Ric BachrachRic is the CEO and president of Celebrity Focus. When Dr. Bachrach joined Nemours in 1987, he became a witness to - and a driver of - the changes that would occur here that helped set the stage for "Well Beyond Medicine," including the transition from an orthopedic-only institution to a full-service pediatric hospital, the establishment of a world-renowned cerebral palsy center, the building of a new hospital in Orlando, and the evolution of Nemours Children's Health into a full-fledged pediatric healthcare system. In this episode, Dr. Bachrach shares highlights of his distinguished Nemours career, memories of patients who inspired him, colleagues who have become his friends, and his perspective on change, retirement, and the Nemours culture that brought him here. Part of the power of having conversations is the perspectives and insights that come out over the course of the interaction. Such is the case with my conversation with David Bachrach a few weeks ago. David is married to an extraordinary planner. He, on the other hand, feels like he is less of a planner and more of someone who has intentions and a few smart habits. We got to talk about a few of these habits and "see what happens" approach he uses to successfully navigate through his day-to-day life and work. He brings up insights and points that I am exploring more since I am a big fan of using a set of habits to plan your time on a weekly basis toward meeting your goals or aspirations. David also got into some of the habits he's seen in his work with government and corporations that is confusing and a detriment to many who work as contractors to these entities. I was reminded of my experiences on both sides of these equations and the frustrations, opportunities, and growth they present to those that are constantly seeking to offer up their best work. And, sometimes don't get to experience the reward of doing so. Tune in to hear great examples of willingness to learn, focusing on a small habit, and using your guiding principles on your resume to uplevel your work.

Today I talked to Dr. Emilia Bachrach about In the Service of Krishna: Illustrating the Lives of Eighty-Four Vaishnavas from a 1702 Manuscript in the Amit Ambalal Collection (Mapin, 2020). The Pushtimarg, or the Path of Grace, is a Hindu tradition whose ritual worship of the deity Krishna has developed in close relationship to a distinct genre of early-modern Hindi prose hagiography. This bookintroduces readers to the most popular hagiographic text of the Pushtimarg which tells the sacred life stories of the community's first preceptor Vallabhacharya (1497-1531) and his most beloved disciples. This book focuses on the only extant Chaurasi Vaishnavan ki Varta manuscript dated to the beginning of the 18th century, now in artist Amit Ambalal's collection. The volume will appeal to scholars and students of Indian art and literature, to those who have grown up in the Pushtimarg tradition, and more broadly to those with an appreciation for the distinct ways in which pictures can tell stories that unite the everyday with intimate experiences of the Divine. Way before there was an internet, the way people learned about buildings outside of their city was in architecture magazines. Initially in black and white, which still has a certain allure, and later in color, magazines such as Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, Art and Architecture, Architecture Forum, House and Home, and Architecture Plus chronicled new construction. All of these publications, sadly, are gone – except for one. At 130 years old and still wild and frisky, Architectural Record continues to bring readers stories of amazing buildings and architects around the world – and we do love their annual Record Houses issue. We’ll talk today with Architectural Record publisher Alex Bachrach, host Aaron Prinz of the magazine’s podcast Design:ED, and all the way from the Netherlands, Phoebus Panigyrakis who did his PhD on Record's midcentury Modernist heyday. Later on, double trouble jazz with singer and trumpeter Bria Skonberg.

The NDP MP discusses the federal government's agreement with Air Canada to restore flights and refund customers.
From Policy Concepts in 1000 Words: Power and Ideas Compare with Policy in 500 Words: Power and Knowledge Policy theory is about the relationship between power and ideas. These terms are difficult to disentangle, even analytically, because people often exercise power by influencing the beliefs of others. A good rule of thumb, from classic studies, is that the more profound and worrying kinds of power are the hardest to observe. Dahl argued that elitism was unobservable; that it was ‘virtually impossible to disprove' the idea that inequalities in society translate into systematic advantages across the political system. Dahl's classic statement is that, ‘A has power over B to the extent that he can [or does] get B to do something that B would not otherwise do'. To demonstrate this power requires the identification of A's: resources, means to exploit those resources, willingness to engage in political action; the amount of power exerted (or threatened) by A and the effect of A's action on B. Dahl identified ‘key political choices' involving a significant conflict of preferences – suggesting that the powerful are those that benefit from ‘concrete outcomes'. He identified inequalities in many areas but no overall, coordinated, control of the policy process. His work is often described as ‘pluralist'. Subsequent debates were based on a critique of pluralist methods. Bachrach and Baratz argued that the ‘second face' of power is exercised before Dahl's ‘key political choices'. Power is not simply about visible conflicts. It can relate to two barriers to engagement. First, groups may exercise power to reinforce social attitudes. If the weight of public opinion is against government action, maybe governments will not intervene. In such cases, power and powerlessness relates to the inability of groups to persuade the public, media and/ or government that there is a reason to make policy; a problem to be solved. Second, policymakers can only pay attention to a tiny amount of issues for which they are responsible. So, groups may exercise power to keep some issues on their agenda at the expense of others. Issues on the agenda may be ‘safe' – more attention to them means less attention to the imbalances of power within society. Schattschneider argues (in A Realist's View of Democracy) that the structures of government, such as legislative procedures controlling debate, reinforce this problem when determining which conflicts receive attention and which are ignored. The ‘third dimension' of power suggests that people or organizations can be powerful without appearing to act. [see Policy Concepts in 1000 Words: Power and Ideas for more]

Travel is the name of the game, which is a little strange considering we're probably in the least-traveled time in the past 50 years. Regardless, people like going places, and today those places are very small. Mo goes to small towns to give a voice to the voiceless, and Jamie acts as Iceland's voice because nobody can understand them. Considering that's probably the only bad thing you can say about the country, that's pretty good.

For this episode of Planet MicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Thomas Bachrach, Founder and Principal at PFH Capital. I met Thomas at the MicroCap Leadership Summit back in September.

We’ve all heard of Near Death Experiences, but what about those who have actually physically died–been medically declared dead–and come back? Judy Bachrach is a contributing editor of Vanity Fair as well as a professor of journalism. Her journalism work for the Washington Post led National Geographic to commission her to write the book Glimpsing Heaven: The Stories and Science of Life After Death, a journalistic odyssey filled with the author’s extensive interviews with those who have died and then been resuscitated – ordinary individuals who return to life with vivid, specific and structured recollections of what Bachrach calls their “Death Travels”. She also interviews the doctors, scientists and nurses who have examined both the death travelers and their memories of what occurred during those voyages beyond life’s borders – scientists, doctors and nurses who find these memories credible and accurate. Clinical death—the moment when the heart stops beating and brain stem activity ceases—is not necessarily the end of consciousness, as a number of doctors are now beginning to concede. Modern medicine is reinventing death... More at: http://philoofhealth.org/2015/01/death-travels-jury-bachrach.html
