Located at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, MareNostrum 5 is part of a network of European supercomputers and is used to conduct research in fields such as biomedicine, geophysics, atmosphere, energy, society and economy, providing valuable data to the international scientific community. Gerard Escaich Folch visits the picturesque chapel Torre Girona, where the MareNostrum supercomputer is installed. There, he meets José María Cela Espín, the director of Computer Applications in Science and Engineering at the Barcelona Supercomputer Centre. His department uses the 314 petaflops of MareNostrum 5's processing power to develop software to efficiently exploit super-computing capabilities through the simulations and modeling. A flop is the unit to define how powerful a computer is, and is based on the number of calculations per second it can make. A standard computer would take 46 years to perform what MareNostrum 5 can achieve in just one hour. Host Beth Cohen learns about the future of computing and we talk to Jan Nogué, a quantum engineer from Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech responsible for building the groundbreaking computer at BSC. We also discuss the cybersecurity risks associated with these new technologies and the measures that the BSC is taking to remain one step ahead of the hackers. This week's Catalan phrase is ‘Aquí hi ha gat amagat!' which translates literally as ‘There is a cat shut in here!'. It is used to express suspicion that there is more to something than meets the eye… Rather like the case of Schrödinger's cat, which can be simultaneously alive and dead, or that of qubits, the unit of measurement used in quantum computing.

Chandra Orrill is a first-generation college graduate who has earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University and a B.A. in Computer Applications in Music from the University of Alabama. She worked as faculty in higher education for 24 years before stepping out to lead Rethink Learning Labs. Her work for most of those years has been driven by her own observation that even as an honors student in K-12, her educational experiences were not particularly engaging or enriching. She is driven by a desire to support students in learning to think critically, to feel capable of success, and to be able to succeed in any field(s) they want. To this end, her research has focused on middle grades mathematics. She is particularly interested in how teachers understand the math they teach and how to support teachers in becoming more expert in their content. More recently, she has expanded these efforts to include more problem-solving approaches and content areas. Specifically, she has worked in computational, cybersecurity, and design thinking in elementary and middle grades. Chandra's goals for Rethink Learning Labs are to transform education through research, to partner with schools and teachers who want to rethink education for the 21st century, and to mentor new researchers into applied research efforts that are driven by data and theory, but that also have a clear impact on teachers, students, and schools. Today we are joined by Rakhi Madan, a broker based in the GTA. Rakhi impressively funded $101 million in 2020 with no assistant, and shares how she was able to accomplish this feat. [2:06] Tell us about yourself. I came to Canada in 2004 and have an MA in Computer Applications. [3:08] How did you go from the tech business to mortgage brokering? I asked for a stake in the company after running it while the owner was retired. He said no. My husband said, ‘you’re really good with numbers, you should be a mortgage broker.’ [4:18] Who did you talk to about the mortgage business? I contacted the DLC office, explained my background, and was put in touch with Don. He showed me that you can make big money. [6:55] How did you go from there to making $101 million last year? I’ve never been afraid of trying new things. I went on a radio show and got experience talking to people about mortgages. [10:55] What is a failure you have experienced but learned from? Trying to do too many things at once. [12:35] Where does your business come from? 50% online, while the rest is referrals and past clients. [13:09] What software are you using? Filogix. [14:22] What changes have you made in the last 12 months? I didn’t make any. The pandemic led to lots of inquiries. [15:18] Have you changed anything in your systems in the past year? I don’t look at any paperwork from anyone that I haven’t pre-qualified by phone. [17:05] What is holding brokers back from success? Fear of trying new things. The networking research community is working to design the Next Generation Internet, which will meet the needs of the twenty-first century. The first requirement for the Next Generation Internet is security. Furthermore, the Internet will include heterogeneous environment, such as cellular and sensor networks. In this talk, I will present our research work related to above mentioned problems and focusing on a new security oriented Internet architecture and security solutions for heterogeneous environments. It should allow receivers to set policies for how and where they receive their information. The Next Generation Internet should be designed for mobile objects. Naming, addressing architecture, and routing have to be such that these objects can move and decide how and where they want to receive their Internet traffic with full rights of privacy of their location, if desired. In this talk, I will present our research work related to above mentioned problems and focusing on Internet architecture, mobile, wireless and security issues.
