Ambassador Cindy Courville joins Mike Shanley to discuss her work as the first Ambassador for the African Union. She talks about what it was like to enter into that role and how she worked with African Leaders to ensure their voices were heard, as well as what it meant to them to have someone assigned to Africa. Ambassador Courville describes the way the relationships have changed throughout different Presidencies and that it is critical to choose our next President based on the needs of other countries. Lastly, Ambassador Courville talks about what someone looking to get started in the development and diplomatic sector should be focused on. Tune in to learn more about the African Union.    IN THIS EPISODE: [1:49] What is Ambassador Courville's view on global security? [2:43] What does she see as the interplay between intelligence and development in promoting development outcomes?  [5:32] What was Ambassador Courville's experience being the first Ambassador to the African Union and what was her role? [9:25] How have the policies changed since the first implemented policies? [14:28] What did it mean to the African Leaders to have an Ambassador assigned to them? [16:25] Has there been momentum on the foundation of engagement with African nations and leaders under the Biden administration?  [19:56] How do the current African leaders see geopolitical options to them in the US, China, and other nations? [24:26] What is Ambassador Courville's insight on good development and the importance of interagency work? [27:25] What is Ambassador Courville's insight to someone that wants to cut development funding or diplomatic funding? [31:53] Ambassador Courville's advice for someone getting started in the development or diplomatic sector.   KEY TAKEAWAYS:  If we fall or shift to a more authoritarian situation, that is not in the best interest of African countries or developing countries in general.  We need to have a democracy and a leadership that is focused on maintaining democracy, not curtailing the rights and freedoms of Americans.  The more politically and economically stable we are, the less you have to use other tools, and you only want to use those other tools in the most extreme situations.    QUOTES: [21:35] “The Africans have been extremely forgiving and understanding. I would say, extremely democratic in their outlook, so they recognize the dynamics and shifts on a level that the average American just doesn't get. I'm not just talking the leadership of Africa, but the people themselves, and so you can't expect them not to engage.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville [24:33] “If I were writing the policy for USAID today, or for the administration, not just for Africa, but in general, I would say we need to increase the size of USAID. USAID's mission is so huge, but the number of personnel and NGOs are great, but we need more continuity in that process.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville [31:19] “We haven't resolved our civil war issues, women's issues, all of those things that are fundamentally part of a democracy.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville   RESOURCES: NSL4A Steering Committee  Aid Market Podcast Aid Market Podcast YouTube   BIOGRAPHY: Ambassador (retired) Cindy Courville, Ph.D. currently serves on the executive board of the National Security Executives and Professional Association (NSEPA) and as a member of the Steering Committee of the Leadership Council for Women in National Security (LCWINS).  Previously Ambassador Courville served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Social Science Foundation Board for the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. Africa will shape the future — not just the future of the African people, but of the world. These were the exact words quoted from President Joe Biden when he delivered his speech at the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit on Dec. 13-15, 2022. President Biden invited 49 African Heads of State to Washington D.C. along with leaders from civil society, business leaders, women, and youth to discuss U.S.-Africa relations. The agenda included discussions on efforts to strengthen business and trade relations, war and political instability, COVID-19, and poverty. Africa is a major geopolitical player, especially with other countries like China and Russia courting the continent too. In this episode, Alexanderia Haidara spoke with Florizelle Liser, CEO and President of the Corporate Council on Africa, to discuss American companies doing business in Africa. Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) is the leading U.S. business association focused solely on connecting business interests in Africa and co-hosted the U.S.-Africa Business Forum and several special side events at the conference. Alexanderia also talked to Mark Tatum, COO and Deputy Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to discuss its expansion on the continent. The Basketball Africa League is Africa's premier men's basketball league. The league consists of twelve teams, each qualified through their domestic competition. NBA Africa is in its 3rd season with teams in Senegal Egypt, and Rwanda to name a few. Given both the criticism of the conference, Alexanderia spoke with the State Department's Principal Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel to discuss the deliverables, diaspora engagement, and the future of U.S.-Africa policy.

Tweet The #1 listed "food radio show Philadelphia" from Google and Bing is back LIVE this Sunday, October 21st at 635pm. That's right Derek is back in studio and Small Bites with Glenn Gross and Derek Timm of Bluejeanfood.com on Wildfire Radio is a #Foodie star studded spectacular! Things get started with Ingrid Hoffmann who has partnered with the American Diabetes Association to publish “Latin Comfort Foods Made Healthy (Clásicos latinos a lo saludable): More than 100 diabetes-friendly Latin favorites”. The book celebrates the joys of cooking and eating healthier versions of traditional Latin recipes bursting with flavor while staying within the nutritional guidelines of the ADA and relying on Ingrid's concept of delicious, easy, and simple recipes with a healthy twist. Raised in Colombia and the Netherlands, Ingrid Hoffmann is a professional eater, author and host of Top ChefEstrellas (Telemundo, NBC), Simply, Delicioso (Cooking Channel) and Delicioso(Univision) is passionate about cooking, entertaining, and helping her fans lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Via her cookbooks, “chica tips” and social media platforms, Ingrid hopes to educate her followers about “better for you” ingredients, implementing cooking habits and to think of food as medicine. With this in mind, in 2015, Ingrid launched her very own food brand, Cocina by Ingrid Hoffmann, which focuses on easy, delicious and healthy meal solutions for the family. She writes a monthly column for Delta Air Lines Delta Sky Magazine and AARP en Español and is a frequent guest of shows like Un Nuevo Día, The Talk, Oprah, Martha Stewart, The View, The Today Show, The Early Show, and The Wendy Williams Show. Then we talk to Dorie Greenspan who has a new book “Everyday Dorie: The Way I Cook” from Rux Martin/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt being released October 23rd and available for pre-order on Amazon.com. To the hundreds of thousands who follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, Dorie Greenspan's food is powerfully cookable—her recipes instant classics. In Everyday Dorie, she invites readers into her kitchen to savor the dishes that she makes all the time, from Miso-Glazed Salmon to Lemon Goop. What makes a “Dorie recipe”? Each one has a small surprise that makes it special. The dishes are practical, made with common ingredients from the supermarket, farmers' market, or pantry, like Sweet Chili Chicken Thighs, which is both weeknight simple and fine enough for company, and Eton Mess, a beautifully casual dessert of crumbled meringue, fruit, and whipped cream. They are easygoing, providing swaps and substitutions. They invite mixing and matching. Many can be served as dinner, or as a side dish, or as an appetizer, or hot, cold, or room temperature. And every single one is like a best friend in the kitchen, full of Dorie's infectious love of cooking and her trademark hand-holding directions. Inducted into the James Beard Foundation's Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America, Dorie Greenspan is also the author of Dorie's Cookies, a 2017 James Beard Award-winner for Best Baking and Dessert book; Around My French Table, a New York Times bestseller that was named Cookbook of the Year by the IACP: The International Association of Culinary Professionals, Baking Chez Moi, also a Times bestseller; and Baking: From My Home to Yours, another James Beard Award winner. The book Breakfast is an exploration of everything about breakfast and brunch. Discover exciting new ingredients and the secrets to making Entenmann's Cake Doughnuts and Taco Bell Crunchwraps at home, among many other dishes. Learn the origins of scrapple and how to brew barista-level drinks. Based on the popular website ExtraCrispy.com, this book—the perfect gift for anyone who loves all-day-breakfast—is packed with 100 photos, humorous illustrations, and amazing, craveable food. Ryan was previously the deputy editor of Tasting Table, but covering all three meals was too much of a burden, so he decided to get into the breakfast media world. Before that, he was the managing editor of VICE magazine. Now Extra Crispy is the authority on breakfast, brunch, and every nook and cranny of morning culture. It is the leader of the growing global breakfast trend, showcasing celebrity chefs and emerging voices. Last, but certainly not least we are thrilled to welcome Steven Cook the co-author of new cookbook “Israeli Soul: Easy, Essential, Delicious” from Rux Martin/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Usually served from tiny eateries, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, or market stalls, these food specialties have passed from father to son or mother to daughter for generations. To find the best versions, the authors Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook scoured bustling cities like Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa, and sleepy towns on mountaintops. They visited bakeries, juice carts, beaches, even weddings. Their finds include meals in the hand like falafel and pita; juicy, grilled and roasted spice-rubbed meats; stuffed vegetables; a wealth of chopped vegetable salads; a five-minute fluffy hummus with more than two dozen toppings; pastries, ice creams, and shakes and adapted every recipe for the home kitchen. Each chapter weaves history with contemporary portrayals of the food. Striking photographs capture all its flavor and vitality, while step-by-step how-to and close-ups of finished dishes make everything simple and accessible. Steven Cook is the co-founder of CookNSolo Restaurant Partners. He is the co-author of Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking, winner of two James Beard Awards in 2016 for "Best International Cookbook" and "Book of the Year". Cook also sits on Broad Street Ministry Hospitality and Corporate Council, which supports Broad Street's mission of providing meals and social services to Philadelphia's most vulnerable citizens. Prior to founding CookNSolo, Cook was the owner and executive chef of Marigold Kitchen. Cook is a graduate of the The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the The-French-Culinary-Institute. He left a job as an investment banker in New York to return to Philadelphia and pursue a career as a hospitality entrepreneur overseeing highly acclaimed and award winning Zahav Federal Donuts, Abe Fisher, Dizengoff, The Roosterand Goldie Falafel restaurants. Jack Gerard is the CEO of the American Petroleum Institute. He joins the podcast to discuss the economic impacts of the predicted capital investments in oil and natural gas. He also gives his outlook on the oil & gas industry in 2014 and beyond.  Gerard explains how the latest oil numbers affect jobs. He dissects whether the Obama energy agenda is that of "command and control", and if the U.S. is becoming self-reliant? Gerard finally addresses the myths about prices at the pump being controlled by market factors out of the oil industry's control. Find out more about the American Petroleum Institute at www.api.org. Jack N. Gerard is president and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, the national trade association that represents all aspects of America's oil and natural gas industry.   Gerard has led API since November 2008, expanding its membership and influence in all 50 states and globally, adding offices in Dubai and Singapore to its operations in Beijing, enabling API to better inform the public and policymakers on important energy issues. API's Washington presence is the foundation for the oil and natural gas industry's advocacy and outreach at state, federal and global levels on public policy, standards and certification programs, and as the source for information on industry best practices.   Gerard is recognized by numerous publications and his peers as one of Washington's most influential advocates. Washington Life magazine named him one of the city's "Power 100" and a Fortune magazine profile said Gerard's effort to build a 50-state advocacy network for the oil and natural gas industry was "showing signs of success" through its outreach to workers and non-traditional allies.   Prior to joining API, Gerard served as president and CEO of the American Chemistry Council, and earlier held the same position at the National Mining Association. Gerard also spent close to a decade working in the U.S. Senate and House. He came to Washington in 1981, and worked for Rep. George Hansen. He also worked for Sen. James A. McClure, who chaired the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.   Sen. McClure retired in 1990, and Gerard joined him in founding McClure, Gerard & Neuenschwander, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based government relations consulting firm. Gerard served as Chairman and Chief Executive officer and focused on issues such as international sports, telecommunications, energy and mining.   He serves as a board member and is a past chairman of the National Capital Area Council - Boy Scouts of America, is a board member and former chair of The George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management, is chairman of the board of directors for the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, and is a member of the Conservation Fund's Corporate Council.   As the industry's national trade association, API has over 500 members. They range from the largest major oil company to the smallest of independents and represent all segments of the industry.   Gerard was born and grew up in Idaho. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Juris Doctor from George Washington University. Gerard lives in Virginia with his wife, Claudette, and their eight children, including twin boys the family adopted from Guatemala.
