Especially the Potlatch. As he learns more about both, he wishes that his people could see that value in each. He feels like the traditional potlatch is going away--and wishes that he knew how to revive it. But he also sees that by learning the Gospel, he really is living a potlatch-life. He wishes he could share the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone so everyone can live a potlatch-life!

EK On the Go

What becomes possible when solutions to modern urban society's most pressing challenges—housing the unhoused, corporate innovation, designing more beautiful places & objects—originate from the communities who have inhabited this place from time immemorial? Guiding us through this multifaceted exploration is Colleen Echohawk. Currently CEO of the Native lifestyle brand Eighth Generation, Colleen's resume encompasses city politics including a Seattle mayoral run 2021. Earlier, as Executive Director of Chief Seattle Club for seven years, she oversaw the creation of 300 new units of affordable housing. Collen spotlights today's rising generation of indigenous government and business leaders as well Indian Country's most admired cultural creators. She suggests that a more enduring and just society would be place-based. In the case of Seattle, this involves incorporating Native values including those of the region's indigenous Lushootseed-speaking Coast Salish peoples. Inspired by Potlatch culture, for example, Colleen challenges corporate leaders to reimagine established notions of prestige and prosperity. Colleen's mellifluous tales fuse with the harmonies of Black Belt Eagle Scout and the rhythms of Supaman. These young recording artists amplify the critical and ongoing dialogue between tradition and invention, a dynamic embedded in Colleen's heartening life, work and stories. "We talk in Indian Country about how we are trying to help reframe folks to say, hey; ‘we are not just in these museums, we are not just artifacts…we are actually living, thriving communities." ~Colleen Echohawk

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - Cortes Island's own Jemma Hicken just released her first major album, ‘Get it Together.' Cortes Currents interviewed her shortly before that.
“I love performing and  I love playing music by myself too, but it does feel special to come back to Cortes and be able to perform on Cortes because it's really where it started for me,” she said.
"Home is definitely Cortes. I was just telling somebody the other day, that there's a beach access down at the bottom of Hayes Road. I grew up on Potlatch, so that was the closest beach access to my house. There's this big rock at the bottom of the beach access. It's a rock that you can climb on, sit on, and I went down there alot. My parents also got married at that rock. I spent a lot of time at that one big rock, and if I was to pinpoint the centre of my universe, that would be it."
CC: Tell us about the album.
JH: “I'm so excited! It came out on July 21st and It's been a long time coming. I've had so many songs that have been backlogged. There's been a whole host of things in the way. I didn't have the time or space to do the recording, but finally I bit the bullet this year and contacted Corwin Fox in Cumberland. He has a studio called Hidden Well.”
“We did all of the recordings in April. It was a pretty fast process, just a couple of months from start to finish. It was really amazing. I went in twice over the course of maybe six or seven days and recorded all of my parts.”
“Corwin  recorded, mixed, mastered, and produced the album. He's been adding instruments to the songs over the next couple of months after that. It's been really exciting to get to hear them with new textures and layers coming to life in the studio. So he's a huge part of it and I'm really excited to release it. It's gonna be fun.”

In 1884, the Canadian government banned the Haida potlatch. But Haida elders kept the knowledge of the ceremony alive until the ban was lifted. In 1969, a potlatch was held to honour the raising of the first totem pole in 80 years, carved by Robert Davidson. Sara Florence Davidson co-wrote Potlatch as Pedagogy with her father to show how Haida traditions can be brought into present-day classrooms. She joins us in our studio to talk about the process of writing the book – and tells the story of how her father came to carve that first pole at the age of 22.

IntroCheck Step 46 for a history of how money developed from sacred origins into “a force for evil.”Part 1: Separation and OnenessThis illusion is a prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for only the few people nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living beings and all of nature.” ~ Charles Eisenstein He goes as far as to say to bring forth generosity and love and all dimensions of life, “we must dismantle the systems of domination that perpetuate the illusion of separation. Most notably the neoliberal system of Economics but also religion and politics.”The difficulty is, we are perpetually bombarded and distracted by the reinforced narrative of individual sovereignty and freedom (liberty) with no discourse on social morality or what we owe each other.  Eisenstein says we must disengage from this system, not oppose it. To do this, we need a new story. Not the age of separation, but the story of Ascent. Part 2Systemically we need policy in place that align wealth with the sacred.  Eisenstein brings up negative interest. This is when money circulates and investment continues, but the original capital loses value. These would lead us to “value” the capital less than the products or services. With positive interest, there is an incentive to hoard money (pull it out of circulation) and be rewarded through stockpiling, which encourages stagnation, otherwise known as a recession. In 1906 Silvio Gesell proposed “ the natural economic order” where a stamp of a small percentage was periodically pasted onto paper currency, this maintenance was a fee on the currency.  If wealth is instead measured through happiness and well-being, it will be linked with intimate connections and communities, mutual benefit and attentiveness, which also provides emotional stability, and can generate it's own economies.Part 3But what about land use, property, and ownership? The consumer citizen has increasingly been distanced from the means of production, and nature, to remain focused on the separated individual self. We become “rational actors” or “rational optimizers.”The tragedy of the Commons is an economic parable about how “rational actors” optimize individual wellbeing at the cost of the entire community, destroying the equilibrium to thrive for self-interest. Our current model exacerbates or encourages extraction, or commodifying the commons into private wealth, which leads to increase wealth consolidation and extractive damage. As the myth of perpetual growth become obvious, we need a support system, which is why Eisenstein recommends a social dividend: call it UBI or welfare. You may ask: where will the money come from, because with negative interest the money supply would continue to shrink? We will develop a “Commons backed currency” to generate new money and align it with preserving nature. If the land was in a public trust, a social shared resource that could be lent (leased) to corporations for a limited amount of time, the lease would be our social dividend, capital, and currency. This is a three-pronged attack torealign money with natural decay, alter the way land is used, letting it become the currency backing or capital as a communally shared resource, andletting pre-pollution taxing redirect innovation (and community) towards enriching a sustainable commons.

Eisenstein asks “Why is money a force for evil in the world?” When did money, once a sacred promise and gift, become a means to separate individuals from each other and nature, to create competition, extraction, and hoarding? Key takeaways from Eisenstein's book "Sacred Economics" 1: We are ungrateful teenagers: the earth nurtured us into adolescence, but we won't become responsible adults. 2: The parable of the Eleventh Round. 3: Negative interest. Instead of money accruing value… what if it lost it? We discuss the origin of money, how it developed as a sacred trust and could enrich lives and community, but through Interest (usury) and the parable of the Eleventh round we see how it destroyed community and the environment through unsustainable growth (capitalism) built into it's design. We also discuss the Tunnel Effect, and how it leads to the problem of solving capitalism's problems with more capitalism. Primarily this is a doubling down into existing systems and ideologies when under stress, which -of course- is manufactured by capitalism. 0:00 Intro (Ryder's 3 takeaways) 8:23 Part 1: Getting stuck 11:47 Part 2: History of money (potlatch into trade) 18:09 Part 3: The Eleventh Round 28: 19 Part 4: Transition from The Hedonic Treadmill 31:36 Part 5: Outro

The "aeronauts" of yore, with their biplanes, have been replaced by Navy propaganda squad the Blue Angels. And Seattle's corporate tycoons still hate socialists.

Charlie grows up in the logging cap begging scraps from cook Potlatch and dodging his nemesis, the fox terrier Chainsaw. Good-natured Charlie is friendly and curious, but this gets him into a lot of trouble, destroying multiple kitchens and just causing general mayhem because of his size and not understanding that he is a cougar not a person. When Charlie’s misbehavior causes too much trouble in the logging camp, Jess has to keep him penned up, but bored Charlie manages to escape and meet up with a young “cougarette”. Charlie gets lost, and has to spend time out in the wild, learning to survive and to fear humans after a farmer takes a couple shots at him. When Charlie returns to the logging camp and behaves aggressively, Jess calms him down, but realizes that Charlie can’t live among humans anymore. He takes Charlie to live in a wildlife sanctuary, where he once again meets the lady cougar and settles into a happy, wild-life with her.○ Trivia: i. Last project approved by Disney himself ii. On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how a non-invasive, tail mounted sensor gathers over 600 pieces of data a second. It can accurately predict when your cow is most likely to give birth by measuring tail movement patterns triggered by labor contractions. When they reach a certain level of intensity over a period of time it then sends an SMS text alert directly to your cell phone on average 1 hour prior to calving. Then, a caller calls in to Coast to Coast and tells a bizarre ghost sighting he and a friend had in South Bend, Indiana. Then, apparently a Benewah County woman swears Bigfoot caused her to crash on US Highway 95 in North Latah County late Wednesday night.  The Latah County Sheriff’s Office reports that a 50 year old Tensed woman walked into their office early Thursday morning around 12:30 to report the incident.  She told a deputy she was driving on US95 North of the Potlatch “Y “near mile post 367 earlier that evening around 11:00 Wednesday night when the incident occurred.  The woman believes she saw a Sasquatch chasing some deer along the highway and when she looked into her mirror to see the “hairy beast” she hit a deer which was running from the Bigfoot. Then, a woman on the Dr. Phil show claims that she died 15 years ago and when she woke up, she had psychic abilities. She claims God sent her back with a mission and some gifts. She has stated that I can speak French, I can write the Bengali alphabet, I can understand any foreign language. After the break Cam tells the incredible story simply known as "The Bell Witch". The Bell Witch or Bell Witch Haunting is a poltergeist legend from Southern folklore, centered on the 19th-century Bell family of Adams, Tennessee. John Bell Sr., who made his living as a farmer, resided with his family along the Red River in northwest Robertson County in an area currently within the town of Adams. According to legend, from 1817-1821, his family and the local area came under attack by an invisible entity subsequently described as a witch. The entity was able to speak, affect the physical environment and change forms. Some accounts record the spirit with the capability to be in more than one place at a time, cross distances with rapid speed and the power of prophecy. Thanks for listening to Expanded Perspectives! Raised with the rich culture and heritage of this coastal First Nations Tribe, he was brought up hearing the stories of the animal kingdom and seeing the great ceremony known as Potlatch. At Potlatch he has witnessed the ancient dances with carved masks and beautiful traditional regalia hosted in the great buildings known as Bighouse’s. Raised to be a commercial seine fisherman from an early age he would work his way up the ranks to be a captain of salmon seine boats during the 1990s. Thomas has also participated in numerous other commercial fisheries throughout the entire British Columbia coast. During this time, he would meet other First Nations from throughout the coast and hear their stories pertaining to the Sasquatch/Bigfoot.

Don't Piss In My Pocket And Tell Me It's Raining

Recently I attended a very touching world-prayer service at a church in Woodstock. Representatives of all of the major faiths spoke and prayed. Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Native Americans prayed together for peace, and for the healing of the earth, especially the Gulf of Mexico.I was very touched by the earnest and forthright prayers from all of those present, but one presentation, though equally well intentioned, stuck in my craw nonetheless.A women who is actually from England but part of a local Native American community got up to speak. The first thing she said was that indigenous peoples the world over have always had reverence for the environment and for human dignity. This is a patently absurd statement. Entire indigenous cultures have imploded due to overuse and misuse of resources. And, of course, there is the egregious example of the Northwest American tribes Potlatch ceremonies. These ceremonies sometimes devolved from simple giving away of goods and food (and, I might add, slaves) to the actual destruction of food – a sort of keep up with the joneses frenzy wherein two tribes tried to outdo each other in the wanton destruction of foodstuffs to prove that they were the most prosperous and powerful. Oprah Winfrey seems very proud of her Zulu roots, though the Zulus were famous for raping and pillaging their enemies, and zealously practicing impalement and other forms of torture. Other tribes viewed them as human locusts. The obvious truth, if one looks past a sort of paternalistic ‘Noble Savage’ reductionism that reveres anyone non-white as implicitly wiser, kinder and gentler, is that white people have no lock on evil deeds in this world, and people of color have no lock on grace, decency or environmental sensitivity. To me, such idealizations of any ethnic group are at their most benign the product of simplistic thinking, and at their most malignant, the bases for prejudice, war, and terror. There seems to be a self-hating aspect to many white people. They see how their race’s dominance on the planet, economically and technologically, has decimated the world’s species, and caused untold human suffering and death. Yet to implicitly blame this on the color of the perpetrators skin by putting all non-whites on a sort of pedestal not only flies in the face of the historic record, but indulges in the same style of racist thinking that these same people would find reprehensible in an unreconstructed Klansman or Nazi.Blacks seeking reparations only seem intent on getting them from the white countries involved in slaving, never from the African countries that of course made the entire slave trade possible through their collusion with whites. A white researcher in the southwest is virtually pilloried for proving that the ancestors of the Navajo practiced cannibalism against the Anasazi. Yet all he did was find the evidence, not fabricate it; And one has only to visit places like Mesa Verde and Canyon de Chelly to see the evidence of a people under siege, living not on the open plain, but clinging instead to high cliff faces, walled into houses with tiny windows. And all was not peace and love among the bloodthirsty Incans and Mayans either. The truth is that all humanity shares linked proclivities for evil as well as for good. None are immune from the violence and hierarchical nature we’ve inherited from our primate forbears, just as we all share a divine spark capable of the most exquisite love, creativity, and caring for all living creatures. The reductionist Politically Correct thinking that denies this universal human duality has been the cause of much suffering, whether used in the service of supporting slavery in the nascent United States, or in drumming out white farmers in Zimbabwe, which turned that country into a famine-wracked ruin.As a Taoist I find it odd that people seem to focus on only one side of things. Some see humankind – or some subset thereof - as inherently evil, some as inherently good. I see a duality well reflected in nature itself. Look to the lioness, tenderly playing with her cubs , and ruthlessly ripping out the throat of the zebra, to see the duality of all creation manifest all around us.
