From lightning fast development on the Las Vegas strip, to oil fueled expansion in Edmonton, Alberta, to once in a generation energy plant upgrades throughout the Southeast, to global mission critical and life science construction for enterprise owners, he thrives in the challenging delivery gap between “as is” conditions and the “to be” designed state. He knows that projects succeed because of people—what they believe, strategy—as it supports creativity and innovation, and tools—to deliver value, drive out waste, and improve safety. In football, as in life, the most important person on the field is often the least noticed – the left tackle: he protects the quarterback's blind side.” As a quarterback at Stanford University, this simple lesson laid the early foundation for Garrett's servant-leadership philosophy: “It's the people you work with every day who determine your ability to make an impact”. After achieving a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford, and despite an early desire to jump right into a Silicon Valley start-up after graduation, Garrett's passion to serve led him to San Diego to become an officer in the Navy SEALs. During this time, he was also selected to become an Olmsted Scholar (similar to a Rhodes Scholarship). After learning Hebrew from scratch, he earned his master's degree in Cybersecurity at Tel Aviv University…in Hebrew! Living there in Startup Nation, he learned another critical lesson, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world.” You might see two common denominators in these life shaping experiences – a love of high performing teams and fearlessness in the face of challenges. Garrett and his co-founder Kyle run headlong into the fray when most would hesitate. “If a problem is too hard for everyone else, it's probably just right for us”. And for that reason, he is wholly committed to solving America's elusive housing crisis. Garrett is married to his childhood sweetheart and loves to spend time with his family. It's no surprise that he's also an extreme sports guy, snowboarding, mountain biking and e-foiling whenever he can. By the way, don't ever get suckered into a ping pong game with him. "The biggest thing is time, right? Like time is probably the most valuable thing that we have."  In this conversation, Devon Tilly interviews Tom Hughes, the Vice President of Construction Operations at Genesis AEC, to demystify the concept of Engineering Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM). They discuss the criticality of pre-construction and the benefits of taking a fully integrated EPCM approach. They also touch on the importance of collaboration and communication among the different disciplines involved in the construction process. Tom emphasizes the need for a cohesive team and the role of pre-construction in setting targets and controlling costs. They also discuss the scalability of EPCM for projects of different sizes. Looking to the future, he highlights the importance of embracing technology, such as artificial intelligence and robotics, to improve productivity in construction. The key takeaway is the search for continuous improvement and the willingness to embrace change. Tom Hughes has more than 20 years of professional experience as a project manager, project engineer, and superintendent on construction projects, focusing on safety and quality objectives. As Vice President of Construction Operations, he spearheads the entire lifecycle of construction projects, from design to commissioning. His expertise extends to the development and upkeep of preconstruction, construction, and closeout execution plans, alongside detailed project scope documentation, including comprehensive schedules and seamless construction activity coordination. Not content with merely meeting standards, Tom is a fervent advocate for pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology within construction. Under his leadership, Genesis is at the forefront of EPCM, BIM, Design-Assist, Integrated Project Delivery, and prefabrication. He consistently harnesses new resources to propel Genesis's lean construction initiatives forward, all in an effort to minimize waste and maximizing client value. Devon Tilly is a visionary who sought me out to partner on a deep dive series on his Art of Construction podcast. He speaks often about platforms and master facilitators, and it took me quite some time to better understand that he is a big thinker whose objective is to bring the construction community together. Platforms can be companies, networking groups, like BS and Beer Metro Denver that I started, or other such organizations that are the catalyst that bring people together to effect change and move an industry forward. Master facilitators are those individuals that help lead the way to creating dynamic synergistic outcomes when people are brought together around a common interest. There are four parts to this deep dive series, but only edited versions of episodes 3 and 4 are included here, largely Because episode 1 is an interview of me and episode 2 is about a larger commercial efficiency program.  Episodes 3 and 4 give us a better understanding of Devon and his goal of building a master facilitator community as well as discussing some interesting building science around windows and heat pumps.   Links to Full unedited versions of each podcast can be found in the show notes Loosely Devon's Art of Construction deep dive series revolved around BS and Beer Metro Denver. In today's interview, I sit down with Devon Tilly from The Art Of Construction Podcast and learn how he built a company culture to take his successful business far into the future. Devon has been recognized nationally for his innovation and creativity within the building industry. In today's conversation, we go deep into people and technology. As we all know, there are more people going out of the industry than coming in. Devon has some great ideas on how to attract and retain the best from that limited supply, which is a requirement to grow any successful business.  What you'll hear in this episode: Devon's podcast, his company, Mountain View Window and Door, and his love of people and technology How Devon figured out that he didn't fit into the corporate world and found his Art of Construction tribe Why Devon started the podcast: to teach others and give good information How Devon uses YouTube to push out content without being “noise” What is your purpose, cause, and passion? Devon's is a commitment to excellence Focus on your WHY, not your WHAT Getting, retaining, and leading good people in your business As the CFO, know what you're good at and what you're not good at. Devon says to “Elevate and delegate and get it off your plate.” How Devon's company job titles “stand out from the crowd in a world of noise” What Devon says about price: Build trust and relationships first The key to not being sales-y: LISTEN The importance of price, service, and quality Four core values: do the right thing, be a problem solver, Get Stuff Done (GSD), and have a commitment to excellence Devon's internship program with Boulder University and others, to bring young people into the construction industry because so many are on the way out (the average roofer is 42 years old!) Devon explains his TAT program (Trusted Advisor Training) Why Devon describes himself as a disruptor and a micro-influencer What's next for Devon? What you'll hear in this episode: Why I choose to share my experiences over 30 years of roofing and how others can grow their business but yet have more free time “What's in it for me?” How I try to give info that I wish I'd had back in the tough days of running my business How I secure show guests and experts who can give a broad perspective of the roofing business What I wish I'd known a long time ago: Focus How to pinpoint my business by looking at the numbers How to avoid the “shotgun” approach Why “the riches are in the niches” Simplify Don't make it rocket science or get too complicated Do a FEW things really well Communicate Make sure everyone is on the same page Take the time for a pre-construction meeting Key Roofing 101 Tips: Sell work, do work, and keep score What I learned in selling my roofing business: It takes a while to “start with the end in mind” Two purposes for being in business: To provide a good lifestyle for you and your family To build a salable asset to support you in retirement Why your business can't be dependent on ONE person but has to be a workable system that you can leave in the hands of capable people The only way you'll grow in business is to delegate to others who can do it at least 50% as well as you If you don't delegate, then you'll never have a salable business and never have any fun or free time Resources: Need Help Answering the Phone? He’s the creator and host of the https://www.theartofconstruction.net (Art of Construction Podcast) and brand, cohosted by Kevin Keefe. There they talk about all things business, success, and building sustainable, thriving business. This week on EntreArchitect Podcast, Building an Online Media Empire with Devon Tilly of The Art of Construction Podcast. Devon’s Origin Story Devon was the oldest of five children whose father began as a contractor and worked himself up to district manager. Every time him and his large family moved, they would buy a house and fix it up. Devon was always interested in the art of construction and the marketing of construction. He is passionately interested in construction and has lived that life long enough to speak the language. Sometimes he felt the industry was too corporate (“what’s your lowest price”) or too construction (“we’ve always done it this way”). Devon moved to Colorado and earned his marketing degree, followed by a move into the construction world. He found he didn’t fit the corporate box very well as an expressive entrepreneur at heart. Thirteen years ago, he went to work for one of his customers. He loved the complication of construction that can either make or break the project. That passion drew him to focus on windows and doors. After meeting his wife, he bought a company out and started https://www.mtnview.us (Mountain View Window and Door). Now, they have two locations in Colorado, twenty-eight employees, and are about to close on an expansion of Art of Construction. After being interviewed for https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0ahUKEwid4P_ClMvVAhWnr1QKHV2CBxYQFggrMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fthechaiseloungepodcast.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNFn_4wW3RBrJY-uGuAJULckRKyanw (The Chaise Lounge: Interior Design Podcast), Devon decided to follow a dream and begin a podcast of his own. How did you grow https://www.mtnview.us (Mountain View Window and Door) so quickly? The first step was to have a really good plan. Next, he assembled a support team of a board of directors and an advisory counsel. Devon’s team was led by his father in law, Greg, who copyrighted a presentation “https://www.theartofconstruction.net/full-life-perspective-referral (The Full Life Perspective)“. From that, he was able to develop his full life perspective. With a good plan, Devon knew he needed to take a risk to succeed. Him and Greg decided to buy a business. Greg helped him put his why together: to be the best supplier for windows, doors and hardware to contractors, architects and project designers in Colorado. As Devon put his plan together, he followed everything laid out in http://amzn.to/2vodxXw (The E-Myth Revisited). He looked at different platforms to see what they did well and what they could improve on. He got his masters and figured out that he was a visionary leader. That was the key, to find out who he was and accelerate that.  Though most window and door companies wouldn’t hire a full-time, in-house marketing position, they did so that they could make changes and be active on the web. They hired an IT guy to create software and systems to scale in the future. What mistakes did you make along the way? Devon learned to hire slow and fire fast. At the beginning, he first hired really fast and filled the office up. None of the hires were bad people, but they didn’t fit the culture correctly. Where did the Art of Construction start and where is it going? The podcast began to grow the business, and Devon found that it really grew him. His...

Meet Todd Reding. The man that provides a roadmap of success to architects throughout the USA and Canada. Guest: Todd Reding From: Charrette Venture Group Back in episode TSS092 with Devon Tilly, Todd's name was put forward by Devon as a man that he's like to see appear on The Site Shed podcast. Todd has a great story of self success and customer success. Charrette Venture Group works with Architects in the USA and Canada (hopefully soon the UK and Australia), by providing an 'incubator' type service that has been refined for Architects specifically. Todd's team has a proven system that when plugged into organisations, it facilitates growth and development across 8 key areas of business. These areas have been derived from their own experiences, along with resources such as 'The E-Myth Architect' by Michael Gerber. Todd explains in this podcast, there's currently around 60,000 architectural firms/companies in the USA and Canada, many of which have little to no idea about how to run a business. Sure they may be great architects, however as we all know, it takes more than mere skill in your trade, or professions to run a successful business. Charrette Venture Group has goals and plans to be working with over 200 firms by 2018. Although they are a relatively new business at this stage, it's looking promising for them and the industry. It's always an honour when I get the opportunity to collaborate with individuals that share a similar vision to myself.  My guest on todays show is a man that I have a lot in common with from a professional point of view. Devon Tilly runs of The Art Of Construction Podcast based out of Colorado, where together with his cohost Kevin Keefe, they invest heavily in educating Tradespeople, Contractors and Architects about business. I was lucky enough to be a guest on their show a little while back (click here to check out that podcast) and it was fantastic to learn that we both share such similar motives. After speaking with Devon a little more, I approached him to see if he'd be willing to come on The Site Shed to speak about his business journey. Devon has a really interesting and inspiring story and unlike many of the overnight success stories we regularly hear about today, Devon's success has come as a result of great leadership, having strong mentors, strategic planning and hard work. Devon acquired his business five years ago, when at the time it was a two man show. Since then Devon his grown Mountain View Window &  Door to a team of over 20 and they are now regarded as Colorado's premier prestige door and window supply and instal company. In this podcast, Devon talks to me about his decision to Niche himself and he also talks about the approach he took to target the top end of the market, using strategic leverage with the strong partnerships he has formed and continues to form with suppliers and architects. Like most of us business owners, the road has not been easy for Devon, however as he quotes in this podcast, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger'. Devon's business is now growing steadily and the future is looking great. If you enjoy this podcast, please leave us a review in iTunes. Also, while you're there, be sure to check out The Art Of Construction podcast. Give it a subscribe and share it round. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
