They delve into the public's misconception of prioritizing today's needs over tomorrow's health, highlighting the need for preventative measures like strength training. The conversation touches upon the complexities of protein consumption, emphasizing the importance of meeting daily protein goals and the often-overlooked nutritional needs for healthy aging. Finally, they address common misconceptions regarding hormone replacement therapy and the importance of prioritizing muscle-centric medicine. This episode offers actionable insights and valuable knowledge for anyone seeking to optimize their health and longevity through a deeper understanding of muscle health.Guest-at-a-Glance
I am delighted to reconnect with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon today! She is a dear friend and a physician whose work has profoundly impacted my own work, particularly during the past few years. She previously appeared on the podcast in episode 95 about three years ago. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is a highly respected functional medicine provider, the founder of the Institute for Muscle-centric Medicine, a nationally recognized speaker and media contributor, and the author of the book Forever Strong. In our conversation, we dive into areas where confusion often clouds our understanding of protein intake. We explore the distinctions between commodities and consumer packaged goods and the impact of sarcopenia and other muscle-related changes that affect women during perimenopause and menopause. Our discussion also goes into the hallmarks of aging, uncovers the critical importance of a specific protein threshold to initiate muscle protein synthesis, and examines the role of food matrices and Leucine thresholds, misconceptions surrounding carbohydrates, and the most effective methods for tracking muscle mass. Additionally, we explore the connections between poor metabolic health and cognitive decline, making this conversation exceptionally relevant and informative. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Lyon's forthcoming book coming out in early October. Her work has played a significant role in shaping my personal and professional life and had a profound impact on many of my female patients and clients. I am confident that you will find today's show with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon as enlightening and valuable as I do. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Where did the confusion around the proper intake of protein originate? Physiological changes that occur in women as they age How hormonal changes during midlife lead to muscle loss and insulin resistance, which can contribute to aging What is insulin resistance? How unhealthy skeletal muscle leads to low energy efficiency and metabolic implications. The importance of protein for women's health How carbohydrates impact our metabolic health The impact of intermittent fasting on muscle health What is skeletal muscle and how does it affect our health? Diet and exercise culture tends to prioritize calorie restriction and calorie burning via cardio workouts. While fat loss is beneficial, building and maintaining healthy muscle mass is also crucial for metabolic health and longevity. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon and Dr. Casey Means discuss Lyon's book “Forever Strong,” why strength-training should be a priority for workout routines, how muscle is the body's metabolic currency, and why boosting protein intake aids in adding and preserving muscle mass. Another great lesson from the movie Forever Strong. When you perform poorly or have a bad day, gather information about what happened, flush the emotions, and get yourself back on track.
One of the lessons taught to us in the movie Forever Strong, is the concept of listen right. Use this concept to help you become the best version of yourself and understand the importance of playing like it is your last game.

Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:46 Hey, Be It babe, Happy Fuck Yeah Friday. We've got some wins of yours to share. We've got a win of mine. We are coming closer and closer with every single one of these Fridays at the end of the year. And so, my goodness, I hope you are taking some time to celebrate some wins by now. Because, if not now, when? And why wait till the end of the year to like, oh, I'm gonna make all these changes next year. Celebrate wins now, and these little wins can help you start to make changes this year. So let's get to yours first. Actually, that is the order. I almost went out of order. So let's get to yours first. Lesley Logan 1:15 We have a couple from Djamila, so she will be our wins for today from you guys. Djamila is an agency member, and has lived all over this world, all, all over this world, and now is in Switzerland, I believe. Here we go. Her wins, surviving a painful double ear infection with flu. Oh, my God. Published my second meta ad, and it's helped me understand the unique selling points of my product and generate a new trial session in two days, create a new promotional flyer and got it printed, training my coaches on what's important and non negotiable to me when working with the clients, it's working because the feedback from clients who have tested other studios has also been super positive, and this has boosted my confidence, because I am seeing the value of my experience. They are seeing the value of my experience. Had a coaching call with Kirsten, who really helps making social media accessible. Almost done reading Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's book Forever Strong. She is protein-obsessed, and I know that you'd eat more of it. What I like is how she flips a narrative from people are over fat to people are under muscled being thinking of other areas of my life and biz where a similar flip could help me. Code of the week that I got from a friend on LinkedIn, why seek a job that you are fully qualified for and can do? There'll be no room to grow and learn in. Ah, these wins are from earlier this year, and there's so many in there, and I do love the narrative change of people are under-muscled. I love that you are reading that Djamila and calling it a win in your life, because I think this is a really cool thing for us all to explore. I just, I really do. Lesley Logan 2:39 So your next set of wins came later this summer. Two little wins for me. Last week, I convinced a client who has back issues that instead of canceling his hit strength training membership with my studio, he should come try Pilates as it might suit his needs better, and if he liked it, we could discuss transferring his membership to Pilates classes. He accepted instead of haggling to get out of his contract, I'm totally being it till I see it, because I know I'm not even teaching Pilates at my studio yet. I just, she's a Pilates, side note, you guys, she's a Pilates instructor for many, many years, so just doesn't have it in her studio yet. Okay, back to her. I just sent out my first studio newsletter using MailChimp. Yay. Looks so much more professional than a regular Gmail. Met with a lawyer friend who has agreed to help sort me out with some legal docs I need in Switzerland. Sometimes daring to ask for help really pays off. Djamila, I think like asking for help somehow always, does pay off. And I just want to say thank you. Your wins, when you post them, they're so reflective. And I even learned something about how I, other things I can see as a win. And so I'm so excited to share your wins with our, with everyone listening to the Be It Pod today, because you know, you can survive a double ear infection with the flu, and that's a win. You can, you can, you can get that on the other side. So just absolutely thank you for being you, and thank you for being vulnerable, and thank you for sharing all of these wins. You guys, if you sent out a MailChimp for the first time, it's a win, right? It's really a win. Instead, we focus on how long it took and why I've been pushing up for so long, and what, like, someone unsubscribed instead of going, I actually did something really hard today. That's a win. That's an FYF. Lesley Logan 4:09 All right, so today, as you're listening to this, is the day before I am going to do my photoshoot for the Accessories Deck. And in my last, really, like, since 2007 I had a lot of stomach issues, and so a lot of the shoots that I've done, I've done in like stomach pain or just not having eaten that day because I don't want to start the stomach pain off while I'm on the photoshoot, which does affect my ability to do the actual exercise and have the energy and stamina to do it. But because I'm working with FemGevity, because I've been advocating my health. My stomach has been doing so, so much better. And so my body is ready for this photo shoot. And I, in caution say that because, out of context, I don't want everyone to think I'm talking about body appearance. That's not what I'm talking about at all. But like the strength of my body. I've been able to actually absorb the nutrition that I've been putting in my body, and all because I advocated myself earlier this year, and not that I ever stopped. I finally found someone who was listening, and in that collaboration together, I've gotten so much out of it, and so I share this with you, because if you have projects that you're just procrastinating on, if it is because of your health, because your hormones are not where you want them to be, or maybe you're feeling a little bit down, or maybe you're not feeling as strong as you used to, or as energized as you used to. Getting help for yourself is a win, and then you'll get to do those things you desire to do, because I would really, really hate to be sitting here and procrastinating on my deck because my stomach was bothering me and my body wasn't strong enough. This deck required more strength than any of the decks because there's so many little tools that I had to practice and so many little accessories, and I needed to practice all of them. And they're accessories for a reason. You don't practice all of them all the time, and I had to do that, plus the guillotine, which I don't always have access to. And so my win is I ready in my body for this, and it is ready for this, and I am ready for this shoot to bring you the most amazing deck possible. And it's because several months ago, I said yes to getting help. And so that's my win. So if you are needing that, please check out our FemGevity team because they are fabulous and wonderful and changed my life and truly have saved it and give me the strength that I need to do all the things I want to do. So there's this deck, but there's more to come, right? There's winter tour and things like that. Lesley Logan 6:28 So all right, let's get you a mantra for your weekend. There is peace in changing your mind when it is done in love. There is peace in changing your mind when it is done in love. There is peace in changing your mind when it is done in love. All right, loves, feel free to always change your mind. Send those wins in. We want to celebrate your wins here on the Be It Pod. And until next time, Be It Till You See It. Lesley Logan 6:54 That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. The Fat-Burning Man Show by Abel James: The Future of Health & Performance
Have you heard that eating animal protein causes cancer? Or that you'll save the world if you only give up hamburgers forever? Despite dutifully reducing our consumption of animal protein for decades, rates of obesity and chronic disease have skyrocketed. In the face of relentless anti-meat propaganda, what if the blanket advice to follow strict plant-based diets is actually accelerating rates of obesity and disease? When I gave up meat as a young athlete for the sake of health and the environment, my results were abysmal. I lost muscle, gained fat, lacked energy, recovered poorly, and my race performance suffered. Since plant-based fake meats and meat substitutes are incomplete proteins that are not well absorbed or utilized by our bodies, avoiding high-quality animal protein can lead to poor outcomes in health and performance for children and adults alike. Meatless Mondays may sound virtuous, but they're not saving the environment or solving the obesity epidemic as many are led to believe. Indiscriminately blaming cattle for the sins of fossil fuels and industrial agriculture is a mistake. We all want to save the world, but as this week's guest quips: “we can't eat our way out of a climate crisis.” Whether you're raising animals or growing crops, industrial agriculture isn't friendly to the environment or our health. Prioritizing the health of your body and the planet requires that we source real food according to the laws of nature, prioritizing regenerative agriculture and pasture-raised animals over the products of concentrated feedlots and industrial monocrops. When it comes to health and performance, eating high-quality protein from healthy animals is one of the most powerful weapons we have to fight obesity, muscle wasting, and premature aging. Today we're back with our friend Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, a New York Times Bestselling author, podcaster and functional medicine physician specializing in the concept of muscle-centric medicine, which focuses on the largest organ in the body, skeletal muscle, as the key to health and longevity. In this episode with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, you'll discover: Why what we think of as aging is actually a disease of impaired muscle The surprising relationship between meat, protein, and cancer How society's focus on weight loss has led to neglect of muscle building, which is critical for overall health The most effective exercises and training frequency to build skeletal muscle, optimize metabolism, and fight aging And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/gabrielle-lyon-why-meat-eating-and-strength-training-are-key-to-longevity/ Grab Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's new book “Forever Strong”: https://drgabriellelyon.com/forever-strong/ Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/ Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus Brought to you by: The Relax Infinity app at RelaxInfinity.com - Save 20% off with the promo code WILD Wild-caught seafood from MarithymeSeafood.com - Get 10% off your first order with code EATWILD

Have you ever felt like you were doing everything "right" for your health, but you're still not feeling your best? In this episode, I sit down with Errin Smith, also known as @that.health.chick, to discuss the journey of unstuffing our lives from things that don't serve us and finding true health and happiness. Errin shares her personal story of struggling with emotional eating despite being in the health space and how she overcame it by reconnecting with herself and finding balance. She discusses how we can take control of our health through the following: ▶︎ Be Present: Tune into what you truly want in the moment to address cravings and emotional eating. ▶︎ Find Your Purpose: Reconnect with yourself, nature, and spirituality to discover your true purpose. ▶︎ Implement Healthy Processes: Focus on practical health improvements like adequate protein, sleep, hydration, and gut health. ▶︎ Practice Patience: Understand that change is gradual and requires consistent, small steps. In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon chats with Dr. Anthony Gustin about Muscle-Centric-Medicine®. With her background in family medicine, geriatrics, and nutritional science, Dr. Lyon discovered that optimizing your health starts by focusing on the biggest organ in your body: skeletal muscle. Her book Forever Strong outlines how your muscle health directly impacts your metabolic health, mental health, and overall lifespan. As she says, “Muscle is the key to longevity and aging well. The more muscle health you have, the better your trajectory of aging.” So she uses this approach to help the world's game changers — from Navy SEALs and elite athletes to CEOs and entrepreneurs — become the best versions of themselves. During their conversation, Dr. Gustin and Dr. Lyon discuss: The habits, behaviors, and standards her high-performing patients share that predict success across every aspect of their lives. How to create systems that address your personal weaknesses and outsmart your predictability. Why muscle health is so underappreciated and often ignored. Signs you don't have healthy skeletal muscle. Why a lack of muscle is a greater health threat than obesity. Measuring strength vs. power to determine muscle quality. The importance of eating enough protein, working out hard enough, and building/preserving muscle mass as we age. Join our Telegram group!Welcome back to another episode of our Mafia Moments series. On this episode, we were joined by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, the author of Forever Strong and health coach to many of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. In this short episode we discuss:Going through the rigors of medical school and residency, while extremely challenging, gave you the broad knowledge base needed to truly appreciate the impact of lifestyle factors on health. Even though some of what was taught conflicted with your prior nutrition knowledge, it was a necessary process.Spending time with geriatric patients and routinely witnessing death gave you profound perspective on the importance of living courageously in the present and making thoughtful decisions about things like nutrition, relationships, and time management. Regrets at end of life often center around not spending enough time with loved ones. Many chronic diseases of aging like Alzheimer's, heart disease, diabetes, etc. have roots in midlife and are directly related to body composition (e.g. wider waistlines correlating with lower brain volumes). Caring for health when younger is crucial.Building skeletal muscle mass in your 20s-30s is important not just for aesthetics but as a metabolic reservoir and amino acid sink to safeguard health with aging. The habits and discipline required to build muscle are valuable in their own right.Muscle is our "health currency" that cannot be bought or bargained for - it requires consistent effort over time, but is a uniquely fair pursuit accessible to anyone willing to progressively work towards their potential.FULL EPISODE WITH DR. “It's important to grasp that we don't eat for protein, per se, but for AAs.” This week is the third and final part as I talk a bit about the book, Forever Strong - A new science based strategy for aging well. Written by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. In this final episode I share a little bit about nutritional science and then most of the time talking about protein and the amino acids that we get from protein that help to fuel our muscles, tendons, organs, and so much more. Protein is good and Dr. Lyon is all about animal protein. For show notes for to www.findingthefloor.com/ep174I would love to hear from you! Angela is joined by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon who's here to discuss her new book, "Forever Strong," which focuses on the importance of skeletal muscle health for overall well-being. Dr. Lyon shares insights on preventing muscle wastage, especially in the context of aging and hormonal changes like menopause, focusing on the significance of starting early with resistance training and proper nutrition to maintain skeletal muscle mass. They also investigate the relationship between physical strength and mental resilience, highlighting the role of courage, perseverance, self-discipline, adaptability, and resilience in achieving overall strength. KEY TAKEAWAYS Nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting healthy skeletal muscle mass, with a recommended protein intake of 1 gram per pound of ideal body weight. The discrepancy between DEXA and in-body scans for measuring body fat percentage highlights the need for alternative methods like waist-to-hip ratio for those without access to advanced scans. Building mental strength is just as important as physical strength, with attributes like courage, perseverance, self-discipline, adaptability, and resilience being key factors. Dr. Gabrielle's "Forever Strong" community offers a supportive platform for individuals to access resources, training programs, recipes, and engage in discussions on health and fitness. BEST MOMENTS "It is much more dangerous to lose skeletal muscle mass than it is to gain fat. So we have focused all about adipose tissue, but actually, who cares about that?" "The biggest, most exciting thing that I'm thrilled about is that we get questions like this all the time. So I have created a community and it's called a forever strong community." "The first thing that I would say is, What have you ever done worthwhile that didn't require courage?" "I was told I would never come off bipolar medication. And now I'm completely medication free and I credit that to the daily discipline of looking after myself." Obviously real food sources, dense protein sources of real food are critical, but sometimes we're not getting in the adequate amount of protein that our bodies need to get the results that we want. And so a lot of folks look to protein supplements, and there are a ton of protein supplements available on the market today, from plant source to animal source. But the vast majority of clinical evidence supporting the benefits of using a protein supplement are from studies done on whey protein. A randomized double-blind study published in the Journal of Nutrition, found that overweight test subjects who are instructed to consume whey protein daily for 23 weeks, lost more body fat, had greater loss in waist circumference and had a greater reduction of circulating ghrelin levels. That is our major hunger hormone, compared to test subjects who were taking soy protein or an isogenic carbohydrate drink. What's really interesting about this study is that the test subjects were not instructed to make any other dietary or lifestyle changes, they just started losing more belly fat by adding in whey protein. That's really something remarkable to pay attention to, and by the way whey protein is not a new invention, Socrates the father of modern medicine utilized whey protein, it was called serum, in their particular dialect, of course, but effectively that's what the translation is. So this has been around for a very long time and it's the most science-backed form of protein, so whatever protein you subscribe to, just make sure you get the best quality possible. And you're gonna find the best quality possible whether it's grass-fed whey protein or a plant-based protein from Onnit, go to onnit.com/model, that's onnit.com/model. And you will find the highest quality protein supplements in the world. Onnit is a health and human performance focused company that even puts their supplements through clinical trials, through randomized controlled trials to see their efficacy. So they're going above and beyond, go to onnit.com/model, check out their grass-fed whey protein, it's amazing and of course, if you're subscribed to a plant-based protocol their plant-based protein is just the best, it just is. My oldest son actually he utilizes it, it's his favorite protein when he's doing a plant-based protocol, some people just their body jives better with certain things and we have to honor that. But we wanna have delicious experiences and we wanna have things that taste good and also feel good in our bodies. So Onnit is that deal check them out, go to onnit.com/model This episode is brought to you by LMNT. Neuroplasticity, the ability of the human brain to grow and adapt and evolve and really to unlock our superhuman capacity is driven by our experiences, our practices, our activities, but also our nutrition. Fascinating new research published in the journal Neuron found that magnesium, this key electrolyte is able to restore critical brain plasticity and improve overall cognitive function. Again, neuroplasticity is the ability of our brain to change and adapt. Now, this is one key electrolyte, but it works in tandem with other electrolytes like sodium. Sodium is critical for maintaining proper hydration of the human brain. If you didn't know this, the human brain is primarily made of water. We're talking somewhere in the ballpark of 75, upwards of 80% water. It's so important because just a small decrease in our body's optimal hydration level, what's noted in the data, just a 2% decrease in our baseline hydration level can lead to dramatic cognitive decline, helping to sustain and maintain proper hydration levels in the brain. Sodium is critical in that. And also researchers at McGill University found that sodium functions as a "off on switch" for specific neurotransmitters that support our cognitive function and protect our brains from numerous degenerative diseases. Right now, the number one electrolyte company in the world is delivering a gift for new and returning customers with each purchase of LMNT. That's LMNT, the number one electrolyte in the market. No binders, no fillers, no artificial ingredients, no crazy sugar and sweeteners. My friend's son was just over at our house and my son, my oldest son Jordan, was training them, taking his teammates through some workouts. And we opened the freezer and there's a bottle of Gatorade, that's a bottle of Gatorade in our freezer. And my wife's like, whose is this? 'Cause we know we don't roll like that. We don't mess with the gators. All right. We don't mess with the Gatorades. And we knew who it was, it was one of his friends. And he came in, he's like, well, at least this is the no sugar kind. And then I go through some of the ingredients with him and I find those curve balls of like, here's where they're sneaking in these artificial ingredients and things that the human body has no association with. But you know, he's taken a step in the right direction by, by being in our environment. So, you know what I did? I put the LMNT in his hand. Alright, make sure that he's got the good stuff, the very best stuff. And also this is backed by peer-reviewed data in a huge body of evidence.
