Craig is Tata Chancellor's Professor of Philosophy and a Founding Faculty and Co-Director of the Institute for Practical Ethics at the University of California San Diego. He is also part of the Campus Climate Change Committee, which has seen some historic enactment relative to the university and environmental policies. Here he and Andrea discuss disinformation and ethical responsibility within the realms of academia and corporations, particularly as related to the automotive industry, exploring the broader implications for environmental sustainability and change. Even as both speakers talk of the importance of vehicles in their own lives and the cars they have loved over the years, the conversation takes a long look at the automotive sector, from its ethical quandaries to the potential of its innovations like electric vehicles, highlighting the delicate balance between economic objectives, environmental stewardship, and the drive towards 'ecological motoring.' Through these discussions, the script paints a multidimensional picture of the quest for integrity and sustainability in an age fraught with challenges. Craig outlines the historical challenges of academic freedom versus corporate influence, exemplified by the similarity in various scandals such as those involving the tobacco industry and Volkswagen's Dieselgate, to discuss the intricate dance between personal accountability and the necessity for structural evolution. The narrative underscores the importance of transparency, the impact of social norms, and the proactive role of education in fostering a sustainable future. Please join our new Patreon and support a community that loves its vehicles and its earth. In Buddhist practice is based on compassion, and so there are a body of practices devoted to it. But what is compassion really? How do we know we have it? Compassion isn't a thing that you gather but a way of being in the world. In this episode, Dr. Erika Rosenberg discusses with Erric what the basis of compassion is, how it helps with every aspect of our lives, and gives practical, experientially focused exercises to help us have more compassion. Compassion is a revolution, both in how we view the world and its potentially radical effect on our world.   Erika Rosenberg, Ph.D. is a scientist, author, and educator who seeks to help people understand themselves and one another better, connect with one another, find peace and joy in life, and suffer less. Erika is a co-creator of the Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) program at Stanford University, Founding Faculty at The Compassion Institute, and faculty at The Nyingma Institute, Berkeley. He emphasizes the importance of calibrated questions and the role of evidence in belief formation.Peter also discusses the challenges of having conversations about emotionally laden topics and dealing with ideological entrenchment. We discuss the concept of preference falsification and how it can hinder productive dialogue. The importance of perspective taking and asking open-ended questions is highlighted as a way to facilitate understanding and challenge deeply held beliefs. We also touch on the application of hostage negotiation techniques in difficult conversations, including those between parents and their children with ROGD (rapid onset gender dysphoria). President Joe Biden on Friday said he will visit Michigan next week to support strikes by the United Auto Workers. “Tuesday, I'll go to Michigan to join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of UAW as they fight for a fair share of the value they helped create,” Biden said in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The president's announcement came hours after UAW boss Shawn Fain invited Biden to join the striking autoworkers. Biden's hastily arranged trip will occur only 24 hours before former President Donald Trump is scheduled to arrive in the state to show his own solidarity with the autoworkers. (As reported by CNBC) This strike, demanding fair compensation and better working conditions, draws parallels to historical struggles of labor movements in the United States, particularly in the context of the southern labor history and civil rights activism. Dr. Michael Honey, a distinguished scholar in African-American and labor history and a founding faculty member of the University of Washington Tacoma , joins Tavis to unpack the historical context of this strike and to explore these critical intersections of American history and contemporary politics.

Quantum information theory has given us a new and interesting twist on the old problem of quantum gravity: the Universe as a Computation. As the computation proceeds, reality unfolds. Information theory allows us to study the behavior of a system without committing to a particular story about it, for example, the story of spacetime. We can go beyond the point where the old story is no longer useful. Information theory comes with a new style of stories about how the world works, stories of complexity and emergence. This is not unique to physics. The same shift has happened in neuroscience where the predictive coding framework for the brain has turned our thoughts and emotions into emergent constructs, tools our brain uses to move our body. They are just like spacetime in physics. This talk explores recent developments both in physics and neuroscience to identify some of the key new ideas likely to shape our future stories of the world. Radical Self-Honesty.  That's the theme of this episode of Decide to Transform. What does it mean to you? Are you radically, painfully honest with yourself, or are you just staying comfortable, i.e. playing small? Each of us has a tendency to avoid pain. We construct our lives around never having to feel it. This leaves us craving familiarity and comfort, and sometimes it leads to addiction. Sometimes people seek to numb or distance themselves from pain with alcohol, drugs, sex or gambling. We all too often seek escape rather than owning what is deep inside us. My guest on this episode, Dylan Hunter Olson, is all too familiar with avoidance and addiction. Join me as Dylan takes us through his journey of addiction, as well as how he succeeded in moving beyond it. How did he overcome this? With Radical Self-Honesty. Radical Self-Honesty means taking personal accountability for your actions in life, as well as for the results of those actions. Yes, pain will come up, old wounds, dark and scary concepts. They are coming up for release. They emerge in your experience so you can recognize them and get rid of them, not with a violent dumping but by remaining calm and present and simply letting them pass. Dylan has learned this, and now lives each day like a lifetime. He encourages you to commit to Radical Self-Honesty in your own life, and in turn you commit to your own growth and to Love. --- Dylan Hunter Olson is an independent singer/songwriter, mentor, transformational teacher, and writer based in Boise, Idaho. After struggling for many years with drug addiction and alcohol abuse, he had a series of experiences that served as his awakening and went through a massive transformation that has made his life an inspiration to all those who meet and know him, and he strives to share his story and mission with the whole of humanity through the languages of music, writing, speech, comedy, and love. Dylan is a Council and Founding Faculty member of the International Academy of Universal Self Mastery (IAUSM). IAUSM is a worldwide online social learning platform launching October 5, 2020.   In 2003, I walked into The University of Santa Monica to embark on the journey of receiving a masters in spiritual psychology.  As a mom with two little girls at home, I was riddled with guilt as I left one weekend a month, venturing out of mommy mode into ALL ABOUT ME.  At the time, I really didn’t know what to expect. The only certainty I felt was that my life would change forever; and it most definitely did. Where to begin…   One weekend a month, we were taught a skill and then applied it in trio format experientially with 220 other like-minded soul tribe members.  We dove deep into our studies, completely reprogramming ourselves and dismantling how we viewed the world. Our belief systems and everything we were raised to believe would be called into question.  Like many, the typical goal line in life was the only way I knew how to navigate. We’re raised to believe that obtaining the college degree, the house, the kids, the perfect marriage, having the ability to travel, feeding the ego, and denying our souls genuine happiness is the only formula for happiness and success. I wholeheartedly lived by the shallowness of this mindset until Ron and Mary Hulnick showed up in my life. The pioneers and founders of USM, the soul centered approach to living, changed by perception of myself entirely. I had yet to discover that I was a spiritual being having a human experience until I stepped foot in this program and my world was flipped upside down. Or rather, right side up.  Finally, I was seeing everything through a different lens, and manufacturing a life dictated only by my own rules. For the first time, I was allowing my heart mind to be the ruler of my domain and my soul the compass to guide the way. It was the biggest gift I had ever given myself and I am so excited to share the woman-- who forever changed my life-- with you. She was my spiritual mentor, someone I admire so much, with qualities that I knew would one day would become a part of me as I navigated my way as a spiritual being having a human experience. Everything I knew up until this moment was simply a compilation of others’ projections of me. I can honestly admit that I never knew who I truly was. My sense of self was in shambles, my purpose was clouded, and I wasn’t aware of how to be fully present in my body without the tools and skills USM provided to teach me to live from my heart mind.  This was the beginning of my life’s work to love myself like I’ve never been loved, to know myself like I’ve never known how, and to build friendships with portions of myself that I often used to run from. As I began to integrate and live from this place, I understood the meaning of gratitude in all its grace. My heart overflowed with emotion as I walked up the stairs to Mary’s office to discuss how to stay in our loving, be loyal to our souls, and find purpose and meaning in our lives. This conversation will leave your heart wanting more and your soul speaking to you. Please give yourself the gift of this talk as we share the journey into waking up from the past, evolving into YOU, and knowing that there is another perspective to life. At SMU, Mark teaches classes focusing on software development, software engineering, and database systems. Previously, Mark was Founding Faculty-in-Residence of Loyd Residential Commons, and he served as Director of First Year Engineering Design in the Lyle School. His research interests are in engineering education focusing on the measurement of individual innovative behavior and fostering the creative and innovative capacity of undergraduate engineering and computer science students. In addition to teaching and research, Mark is an academic adviser to computer science majors, and serves on various committees throughout the university. On this weeks episode Mark and I are discussing what changes are needed when educating the next generation of computer scientists and engineers. During this episode we discuss what is wrong with the traditional model of engineering education and challenge the difference between teaching theory vs. application in the real-world. Mark cannot stress the importance of the human side of engineering education, and that the so-called “Soft Skills” don't necessarily come that easily to lots of engineering students. We discuss how education institutions must teach students the need to build products and solve problems for other humans, not just for the sake of building and using cool technology. These institutions need to be teaching students to think about the user – to be empathetic! Additionally students must gain experience not just working together with others in a team, but collaborating and communicating across teams and with different stakeholders. And finally we discuss how to nurture a culture of innovative and creative problem solvers. Mark outlines the Three (non-linear) components of Innovative Work Behavior: - Idea Generation - Idea Promotion - Idea Implementation Be sure to tweet at me (https://twitter.com/dougplatts) and let me know what you think of the show. A compelling new book presents information, stories, and simple, yet life-changing practices designed to assist you in doing the work you came to earth to do: Waking up into the Awareness that you are the Presence of Love, and living your unique life of meaning, purpose and fulfillment from within that Awakened state. Remembering the Light Within comes forth from today's special guests Drs. Ron and Mary Hulnick, Founding Faculty and Co-Directors of the University of Santa Monica, the Worldwide Center for the Study and Practice of Spiritual Psychology. Their book affirms that we all suffer from greater or lesser degrees of "Spiritual amnesia."  We've forgotten who we are and why we're here.  The process of Remembering is an active process through which step-by-step you remove or dissolve the barriers within your consciousness that are all that prevent you from knowing your Soul's nature-from experientially knowing that you are a Divine Being having a human experience.  Can you imagine walking through this world in a consciousness that is Awake to Love?  Wouldn't that be Amazing Grace? Drs. Ron and Mary Hulnick are pioneers and worldwide leaders in the field of Spiritual Psychology, as well as teachers and facilitators of Awakening in Consciousness. They are renowned educators, authors, and the Founding Faculty and Co-Directors of the University of Santa Monica (USM), where they have designed, developed, and facilitated educational programs for the past 35 years. Both are licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, and Mary is a licensed Clinical Psychologist. They are also the authors of Loyalty to Your Soul: The Heart of Spiritual Psychology.
