In June 1972, 23-year-old Harry Walker left Alabama for the adventure of a lifetime. Days after arriving in Yellowstone National Park, he was killed by a grizzly bear. Harry's death exposed decades of controversial bear management practices and sparked a legal battle against the federal government. At the center of it all was a question that Yellowstone had been struggling to answer for generations: how do you keep bears wild while keeping people safe? On October 15, 2022, four college wrestlers hiked into Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest to hunt for shed antlers. They never saw the grizzly coming. When the bear attacked, one teammate made a split-second decision that would later earn him North America's highest civilian honor for heroism—and leave both young men fighting for their lives on a remote mountainside. With a broken arm and hundreds of stitches between them, getting off that mountain would take everything they had, and everyone they came with. This is a story about what happens when training, instinct, and brotherhood collide with the raw power of the wild. 00:00 Welcome to The Crux 00:38 Grizzly Charge Cold Open 01:35 Meet the Wrestlers 03:49 Split Up on the Trail 04:33 Brady Gets Mauled 06:35 Kendall Runs In 10:25 Second Attack and Silence 11:28 911 Call and Rescue Push 16:15 Hospital and Injury Breakdown 19:37 Bear Spray Lessons 20:47 Recovery and Hero Medal 22:30 Documentary and Facing Bears Again 24:12 Bear Spray vs Firearms Data 27:18 Practical Bear Country Tips 29:17 Bonus Bear in the House 30:56 Final Takeaway and Wrap Up 32:40 Outro and Listener Support Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ REFERENCES CNN — "College wrestlers mauled in gruesome grizzly bear attack" (October 20, 2022) ESPN — "Northwest College wrestlers hospitalized after bear attack" (October 19, 2022) ABC News — "Wyoming college wrestlers recount near-death fight with grizzly bear" (October 19, 2022) NBC News — "Two college wrestlers injured in grizzly bear attack while hunting in Wyoming" (October 18, 2022) CBS Sports — "Wyoming college wrestler saves teammate from being mauled by grizzly bear" (October 19, 2022) Deseret News — "Grizzly bear attacks two college wrestlers in Wyoming" (October 17, 2022) FloWrestling — "Northwest College Wrestlers Recovering After 'Horrifying' Bear Attack" (October 19, 2022) Cowboy State Daily — "Highest Heroism Award For Wyoming Wrestler Who Saved Teammate From Grizzly" (March 25, 2024) Cowboy State Daily — "There's More To Kendell Cummings Than Being The Guy Who Wrestled A Grizzly" (March 26, 2024) KTVQ — "Northwest College wrestlers 'in face of adversity, made it through' months after grizzly bear attack" (February 27, 2024) Powell Tribune — "Northwest College wrestler honored for extraordinary heroism" (March 28, 2024) Carnegie Hero Fund Commission — "17 recognized by Carnegie Hero Fund for saving others from peril" (March 2024) East Idaho News — "Young man who saved friend during grizzly bear attack among 17 receiving prestigious national honor" (April 7, 2024) KSL — "Man who saved friend during grizzly attack receives prestigious national honor" (2024) Wyoming Game and Fish Department Statement (October 2022) Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The excitement of being within Trad range of an animal definitely will make the heart pound. But being within Trad range of a grizzly takes it to a whole other level. It is imperative that the hunter makes no mistakes and stays focused on the job at hand. One small lapse in focus can mean a blown hunt, or death in the jaws of one of the most formative animals a bowhunter could ever dream of hunting. It takes a special hunter to take a grizzly with traditional gear. Rick Snell, “Mr. Grizzly”, has spent much of his life hunting these magnificent animals with his recurve. This week Rick joins Alan Altizer as he shares several grizzly hunts and a couple of black bear stories. Having taken over 20 grizzlies with a recurve, he has some incredible stories. This is an exciting show!!!
Rick planned to discuss the new I Know With You Did Last Summer with Brianna Sig from Soraia. We talk about the original, spoil the new 1, these characters being more likeable, attractive podcasters, wearing fancy headphones in the bathtub, what we enjoyed, what we didn't & the story of how Freddie Prinze Sr. intended to kill John Travolta. We inadvertently made this a 2 topic episode by talking about Grizzly 2. We get into how it sat unreleased for 35 years, Sallah from the Indiana Jones movies, how the film is about 50% footage from a European music festival & that the ending actually is a purloined conclusion from Jaws 2. Please subscribe, review & give us that 5 star boop!
On the first hour of Nuanez Now, Colter Nuanez broadcasts live from the historic Missoula Club in downtown Missoula and is joined by former Montana Grizzlies standout Sammy Akem for another edition of Inside the FCS. The two break down a variety of storylines from around the FCS landscape and discuss the latest news and developments in college football.Later, Colter and Sammy continue their conversation by discussing the youth football camp hosted by Montana star running back Eli Gillman in Missoula. The two also examine Gillman's place in Grizzly football history and the legacy he could leave behind as he enters the final season of his collegiate career.
Uff!

The episode kicks off with Luke sharing a story about a summer pear tree in his front yard in Northeast Texas. The tree drops a massive amount of fruit, which squirrels nibble on during the day. By nightfall—around 9:30 PM—a sounder of about ten wild hogs arrives like clockwork to eat the fallen pears. Luke reveals he has been tracking them with a thermal monocular and plans to hunt them from his front porch (about 45 yards away) using his new Ten-Point crossbow. Larry and Luke dive into the fascinating intelligence and sensory capabilities of wild hogs. Larry notes that research shows hogs have an extraordinary sense of smell (capable of detecting truffles six feet underground in Europe) and an incredible multi-generational memory that maps out seasonal feeding patterns year after year. The duo reminisces about their shared history hunting hogs and their co-authored book, Poor Man's Grizzly. They look back at the timeline of the wild hog population in Texas: The 1970s: Hogs were sparse and considered a highly prized, rare trophy in places like South Texas. The 1980s: The population boomed. Luke and Larry candidly admit that back then, it was common—and legal—for hunters to trap and relocate wild hogs all over the state to create hunting opportunities, inadvertently fueling the massive population explosion seen today. Luke's Roots: Luke shares that his fascination with hogs started at age eight when he saved up pecan-picking money to buy his first two domestic pigs for $6 each. Luke recants his latest fishing adventures with his colleague Jeff Rice from A Sportsman's Life TV Show which can be found on Carbon TV and YouTube. They recently fished the Red River below the Eisenhower Dam at Lake Texoma with airboat guide JC McCullah. Using heavy casts into 15-foot-deep washouts, they hammered channel and blue catfish, including a massive blue catfish weighing around 40 pounds. JC McCullah also uses his airboats to transport hunters to remote, untouched wilderness areas along the Red River on the Oklahoma side. Luke and Larry discuss plans to head up there this fall for an isolated deer hunt, utilizing a remote FEMA building JC has set up as a rustic camp. Larry celebrates his long-standing friendship with Luke, noting that he has been a regular guest on Luke's commercial radio show and podcast, Catfish Radio, for over 20 years. They close the episode by highlighting a few major upcoming events for outdoor enthusiasts: DSC Summer Show: Taking place July 23–26 at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas, featuring over 400 exhibitors and the DSC Foundation Gala on July 25th. An Evening at the DSC Office: Scheduled for September 17th, featuring wild game cooking and storytelling. Luke's Annual Rendezvous: Held every spring (typically the first Saturday in March) in Greenville, Texas. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Are you ready for the next grizzly bear?—not the animal, but a major market downturn. He discusses the history of market corrections, bear markets, and the rare but devastating grizzly bear markets, illustrating why it's crucial to evaluate your portfolio's risk level during strong market conditions—not during times of crisis. Whether you're approaching retirement or still in your wealth-building years, this episode will prompt you to reconsider your risk tolerance, portfolio diversification, and readiness for inevitable market storms.Outline of This Episode[03:34] Importance of communicating about conflict before it arises [06:27] Discussing market downturns and returns[10:16] Understanding Market Corrections[11:31] S&P 500 correction frequency[16:51] Assessing portfolio risk levels[18:01] Understanding risk and portfolio deviations[24:03] Preparing for market downturns[25:11] Preparing for market downturnsThe Importance of Talking About Risk—Before the DownturnMuch like in relationships, it's best to address potential conflicts before they arise; investors address risk before markets turn volatile. Re-evaluating your comfort with risk and your portfolio's construction when things are calm puts you in the driver's seat. Waiting until a downturn hits can leave you reactionary and vulnerable to poor decisions—like panic selling when it hurts the most.Understanding Corrections, Bear Markets, and Grizzly Bear MarketsI break market volatility into three categories:1. Corrections – The Baby BearA correction is a market drop of at least 10% from its recent high. While the news can make a big fuss about corrections, they are common and, historically, have historically recovered relatively quickly. The S&P 500 has seen 28 corrections since 1969—that's about one every two years. The best move during a correction is strategic rebalancing, not panic.2. Bear Markets – The BearBear markets are drops of 20% or more. Since 1969, they've happened eight times—about once every seven years. Bear markets are more serious than corrections and can be emotionally challenging, but they're still a normal part of the investing cycle. If you're lying awake at night during a bear market, it probably means your portfolio risk wasn't suited to your comfort level before the downturn.3. Grizzly Bear Markets – The Real ThreatA grizzly bear market is a severe drop of 30% or more, and these are rare but devastating. Since 1969, only three have occurred: during the oil and stagflation crisis of the ‘70s, the dot-com bubble in the early 2000s, and the 2008 financial crisis. These markets can take years to recover—some up to 91 months for a portfolio invested solely in the S&P 500.Diversification and RebalancingWhat separates those who weather grizzly bear markets from those who don't? Preparation and portfolio construction. A diversified 60% stocks/40% bonds portfolio has historically fared much better during grizzly bear markets—experiencing smaller drawdowns and much faster recovery times than a pure stock portfolio. By owning more than one asset class and maintaining an “airbag” of bonds and cash, retirees can draw on their safer reserves during downturns, giving stocks time to recover. The Questions Every Investor Should Be AskingIf you're living off your investments, in or near retirement, now is the time to ask:Is my plan set up for the next grizzly bear? Can I withstand a major downturn?Do I have the right mix of stocks, bonds, and cash?Has my advisor “back-tested” my plan against worst-case scenarios?Grizzly bear markets, though rare, are inevitable over a long investing life. The pain is real—but so are the solutions. Assess your risk now, diversify, prepare your cash and bond airbags, and ensure your plan has been rigorously tested for rough times. Addressing risk in your portfolio now leaves you sleeping soundly—no matter what the market throws your way.Connect With Scott WellensSchedule a discovery call with ScottSend a message to ScottVisit Fortress Planning GroupConnect with Scott on LinkedInFollow Scott on TwitterFortress Planning Group on FacebookSubscribe to Best In WealthAudio Production and Show Notes byPODCAST FAST TRACKhttps://www.podcastfasttrack.comPodcast Disclaimer:The Best In Wealth Podcast is hosted by Scott Wellens. Alright, if you want a raw, unfiltered elk hunting conversation from a guy who is absolutely obsessed with the game — this is your episode. Brandon Schmitz out of North Idaho joins the show for his very first podcast appearance, and let me tell you, this dude brings it. No fluff, no highlight reel — just honest elk hunting from a guy who has spent the last six years grinding through some of the most demanding country in the West. Brandon didn't grow up with a silver spoon handed to him in the elk woods. His dad lost the fire for hunting after wolves moved into North Idaho and wrecked what used to be some of the best big game hunting in the country. So Brandon had to figure it out himself, and that journey is exactly what makes this conversation so good. From his very first elk hunt — where his cousin smoked a bull that basically walked up to a truck parked in the middle of the road — to going toe-to-toe with grizzly bears, packs of wolves, and rutting bull moose in the same drainage, this guy has seen it all. Six-plus years in, Brandon still hasn't notched his tag, but don't let that fool you. This dude is FINDING elk — like, legitimately locating 20-plus bulls in a single season. The problem he keeps running into is the same one that trips up a ton of DIY hunters: closing the deal. We dig deep into that in this episode, and I think a lot of you guys are going to hear yourselves in Brandon's story. We talk about the mental side of solo hunting, what it really means to "be in striking distance," how to work a bull when your setup goes sideways, the art of building a bull's ego so he's absolutely fired up the next morning, and why sometimes the laziest move IS the right move. We also get into the very real challenges of elk hunting in grizzly and wolf country, the predator management problem that nobody in power wants to touch, and what it's like to be solo in the woods surrounded by apex predators that don't have a healthy fear of humans anymore. This is one of those conversations that reminds you why we love this thing so damn much — even when it's hard. Maybe especially when it's hard. This Episode's Sponsors TricerIf you're not running Tricer gear in the field, you're leaving performance on the table. Stop Trying to Kill the Elk — Start Trying to Stay Close to ItOne of the most useful mindset shifts in this episode: instead of putting the pressure of "I need to kill this elk tonight" on every single move, just focus on getting into striking distance and staying there. Elk hunting rarely goes according to the exact plan, but things tend to happen when you're consistently close. Measure your days by time spent within range of elk, not by whether a shot materialized. This single reframe takes the anxiety out of solo hunting and keeps you in the game longer.2. Let Curiosity Kill the Cat — Silence Is a WeaponWhen a bull hangs up and won't commit, most hunters feel compelled to keep calling. Big mistake. A quiet elk is a suspicious elk — a quiet *location* is a curious elk. When you go dark after a bull responds, you're not losing the conversation, you're winning it. He'll start wondering where you went, and that curiosity will often pull him toward you. Learn to sit on your hands, let the shot clock run a little, and only break the silence if you truly feel him losing interest. When you do break it, try raking over calling — it's less demanding and gives you the chance to move.3. The Decision Fatigue Problem Is Real — Have a Plan and Commit to ItBeing physically tough enough to elk hunt is table stakes. The thing that actually determines success — especially for solo hunters — is the mental discipline to stick to a plan when everything is going sideways. It's easy to leave a drainage after a tough morning and convince yourself the elk blew out. It's harder to say "I committed to this spot for two days and I'm seeing it through." The hunters who string together good at-bats aren't necessarily the ones who work the hardest — they're the ones who make fewer panic decisions and have the confidence (sometimes fake confidence) to stay the course when doubt creeps in.
While I have never had the pleasure of living in Bear country, I have hiked and camped in Bear's world and had the ecstatic experience of seeing a Grizzly Bear sow and her three cubs. Seeing them in the Montana wilds, separated only by physical space, induced feelings of reverent terror coupled with awe that is impossible to achieve when viewing Bear from the safety of the protective barriers zoos erect to prevent the mayhem of the great bear harvesting a human or three. After all, it is difficult to feel reverent awe when viewing a clown in a cage or an incarcerated prisoner, a poor imitation of an authentic being able to snuff out human life with one swipe of its massive, clawed paw.

There are now more grizzly bears in more places in and around Yellowstone National Park than at any time in over a century. But until this spring, the population lacked genetic diversity. Montana Public Radio's Nick Mott reports on how fresh bear genes got into Yellowstone, and what it could mean for the bears' endangered species protections.

Discover the unspoken rules of branding season etiquette every ranch hand should know, from proper cattle handling to respecting the crew. Plus the story of an Idaho hunter who survived a grizzly bear charge while protecting himself and his young son. Follow along and start cooking outdoors with confidence. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Why Branding Etiquette Matters on the Ranch Branding season is one of the busiest and most important times of the year in cattle country. It's where long days, hard work, and tradition all meet in the branding pen. Whether you grew up ranching or you're showing up to help neighbors for the first time, knowing the unspoken rules matters. Good etiquette keeps the crew safe, the cattle handled properly, and the day moving smoothly. Respect still goes a long way in cowboy culture. The Unspoken Rules of Branding Season Don't Ride in Front of the Boss Every ranch has a flow and leadership structure. Cutting in front of the ranch owner or lead rider is seen as disrespectful and disruptive to the cattle. Only Come if You Were Invited Brandings are community events, but they're still working operations. Showing up uninvited can create unnecessary confusion, safety concerns, and extra mouths to feed. Do the Job You're Assigned Not everyone ropes calves. Not everyone runs the branding irons. The Ranch Boss will place people where they're needed most. A good hand works where asked without complaint. Drag Calves Properly Never drag calves above the hock and/or drag by one leg. Learn How to Vaccinate Correctly Giving vaccines improperly can injure cattle and reduce effectiveness. If you don't know, ask someone experienced. Secondly, if multiple vaccines are being given - work as a team to understand for example who is going high or low on the neck. Leave the Dogs at Home Even well-trained dogs can create problems in a crowded branding pen. Extra animals increase stress on cattle and distract working horses. No Loping in the Pen A branding pen is tight, crowded, and dangerous. Moving too fast puts horses, riders, calves, and ground crews at risk. Let the Crew Handle the Roping Every ranch has trusted ropers who know the cattle and understand the pace of the operation. Unless asked, don't ride into the roping pen. Learn How to Wrestle Calves Roping is only part of the job. Good calf wrestlers are valuable because they know how to control calves safely and efficiently. Ask to be shown how, everyone is always happy to teach. Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings Brandings move fast. Horses, ropes, cattle, gates, and people are all moving at once. Situational awareness keeps everyone safer. Thank The Cooks and the Ranch Boss Events like a branding are a lot of work to host. From cooking for large crews with weather unknowns to leading the branding crew, be courteous and always thank the hosts for allowing you to be a part of the western way of life few have the chance to experience! Tradition, Respect, and Ranch Culture Branding season is about more than cattle work. It's about neighbors helping neighbors, preserving ranch traditions, and earning respect through hard work and awareness. The best ranch hands are usually the ones who stay humble, pay attention, and understand that cowboy etiquette is still very much alive. Hunter Survives Grizzly Charge in Idaho Forest An Idaho hunter shot and killed a charging grizzly bear after officials say the animal rushed toward him and his young son in a remote area near Yellowstone National Park. Wildlife investigators determined the man acted in self-defense and will not face charges. The encounter happened the evening of Saturday, May 16, 2026 in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest while the pair were hunting black bears near Cave Falls Road. According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the grizzly crossed a meadow, caught the hunters' scent, and suddenly turned toward them. Officials say the hunters tried to alert the bear to their presence, but it charged anyway. The man first fired a handgun, then switched to his rifle and killed the bear only about five yards away. The hunter later contacted the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, which notified state wildlife officers. After investigating, officials concluded the shooting was justified because the bear posed an immediate threat to the man and his son. Grizzly bears remain protected under both state and federal law, meaning they can only legally be killed in situations involving defense of human life. The incident comes just weeks after another grizzly attack inside Yellowstone National Park, where two brothers were injured while hiking near Old Faithful. Both survived after being rescued and flown out by helicopter. Wildlife officials are reminding hunters and hikers in grizzly country to carry bear spray, travel with partners, make noise in dense areas, and stay alert for fresh bear tracks or signs. Grizzly bears were once native to California, from the redwoods all the way to the Mexican border. Euro-American settlers wiped out the species in roughly 75 years, with the last reported grizzly bear seen near what is now Sequoia National Park in 1924. Despite that literal absence from the state, grizzlies are also still everywhere: from the California state flag, to place names (like Los Osos, meaning "the bears" in Spanish), to college football team mascots, like the Berkeley Golden Bears. A new effort led by the Yurok and Tejon Tribes is proposing to study the feasibility of bringing back our grizzlies to the state. A new bill in the legislature, SB 1305 (Richardson), would direct the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to study potentially reintroducing the species to the state through scientific, socioeconomic, and tribal consultations to assess its feasibility.Tiana Williams Clausen, Director of the Yurok Tribe Wildlife Department, and Peter Alagona, professor at UC, Santa Barbara, join the program to talk about grizzlies in California, both in the past and hopefully the future. Celebrate Mother's Day with fresh ideas, then dive into gripping real-life wildlife encounters from an Alaska bear attack to a hunter's shocking bobcat encounter and a heartwarming viral story of a playful baby bison. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! From Alaska Bear Attacks to a Baby Bison Gone Viral — Plus Meaningful Mother's Day Ideas Mother's Day Ideas First off - before buying, planning, booking something special... Think about How well you know your mother! From a young mom to one dealing with now teenagers to grandma that just wants to spend time with you all come with different expectations, or one might call wants. A young mom with little kids - I hear this often how they would love just to sleep in, rise and shine on their own time to take a shower without kids banging on the door to binge watching their favorite shows. Mom on the go with kids activities - friends have told me how they'd appreciate a day at home where Dad takes over chasing soccer games, etc. Empty Nesters - this is where I hear from mother's wanting time with their kids the most. Time as we often say is the most expensive gift anyone can gift! Do an activity together from cleaning flower beds to taking in a movie or going to brunch. A Night Away. A friend recently shared her yearly tradition, and thought it was fantastic, especially for the Moms trying to juggle it all. Their husbands will book them a hotel room for themselves, get dropped off on a Saturday for example and then enjoy their time ordering room service or take out, even book a massage... just some peace and quiet with a change of scenery to recharge. Then on Sunday, the family picks her up at checkout and they all go to brunch as a family. Adventures: Many women say they want a day with their family but the key is NOT TO HAVE TO PLAN it. Take a hike, go fishing, put the kayak in for the first time of the year and then either pack a picnic or grab sandwiches to go. Now to help the men - Mom's know that it is OKAY to vocalize what you would like or your expectations for Mother's Day to Birthdays to Christmas. What I have learned from my own spouse is to only have brothers, they do want to make us happy and feel appreciated at the end of the day, so a little direction actually is a Good Thing. Happy Mother's Day to you all!! Off-Duty Medic Rushes to Save Soldiers After Alaska Bear Attack Two soldiers wounded in a bear attack during a military training exercise in Alaska are now out of the hospital, in part because of the fast action of an off-duty combat medic who rushed to help. The attack happened at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson during a land-navigation exercise, where troops train to move through unfamiliar terrain with limited gear. A bear—initially believed to be a brown bear—mauled two soldiers in a remote area. The victims used bear spray, which officials say likely helped them survive. When Zachariah Clark learned of the attack, he immediately headed toward the injured soldiers, despite not having his full medical equipment. He pushed through deep snow and thick woods, gathering other soldiers along the way and guiding them to the scene. Using only basic first-aid kits and whatever supplies they had, Clark and the group treated the wounded—working to control injuries and prevent hypothermia by sharing extra clothing. He then coordinated with arriving emergency teams and helped prepare the soldiers for helicopter evacuation. Both injured soldiers have since been released, though details about their injuries have not been shared as the investigation continues. Officials are still confirming the type of bear involved through DNA testing. Brown bears and grizzly bears are technically the same species, but they differ by habitat and size. Brown bears typically live in coastal areas with rich food sources like salmon and can weigh up to 1,000 pounds. Grizzly bears live inland, have fewer food resources, and are usually about half that size. Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson is in an area known for bear encounters, but the scene of this most recent attack is in a remote and restricted section of Alaska that's not accessible by the general public. Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/survival/combat-medic-responds-bear-attack/ https://www.nps.gov/articles/bear-identification.htm Hunter Surprised by Bobcat Attack While Calling Turkeys A young hunter in Wisconsin had an unexpected and startling encounter when a bobcat pounced on him during a turkey hunt—an incident he captured on video. Carson Bender, 19, was hunting near Nekoosa early one morning, using turkey calls to draw in gobblers. Sitting camouflaged against a tree with his shotgun ready, he heard faint movement behind him. Using his phone to check, he discovered a bobcat quietly stalking him from just a few feet away. The animal, likely drawn in by Bender's turkey calls, crept closer in a hunting posture. After about a minute, it suddenly leapt, scratching his arm before quickly realizing something was wrong and running off. Bender described the roughly 25-pound bobcat as more startled than he was. He suffered minor scratches, which were later treated by a doctor with antibiotics to prevent infection. Despite the scare, he continued hunting that day but missed a shot at a turkey, saying the encounter may have shaken his focus. A few days later, he returned to the same area and successfully harvested a gobbler. The incident highlights how realistic hunting calls can sometimes attract unintended predators, especially in areas where wildlife is active. John Otto and his wife, Makayla, recently brought home a young bison calf named Georgie to their ranch near Plaza. What started as a routine bottle-feeding effort quickly turned into a viral hit, as Georgie repeatedly headbutts and knocks Otto over — clips that have now drawn millions of views online. Despite weighing only a fraction of a full-grown bison, Georgie has a strong personality and surprisingly, is often targeting John while remaining calm and affectionate with Makayla. Otto describes the calf as both lovable and relentless, joking that he may have finally met his match. The Ottos are no strangers to raising bison. Their first attempt ended tragically, but they were determined to try again. This time, they're using frequent, hands-on feedings to help socialize Georgie and build trust — even if it means enduring a few bruises along the way. Experts say early interaction is key when raising animals like bison, and the couple hopes their persistence will eventually turn Georgie into a friendly, well-adjusted member of their ranch, which includes cattle, goats, and other animals. Brians Questions: Hello and greetings from Texas, I'm an amateur woodworker who may have bitten off a little more than I could chew. I started building full closet cabinets for my walk-in master closet, and at this point I'm too far in to turn back, so I'm learning as I go. All of the cabinet boxes are installed, and I'm now working on shelves and drawer fronts. My question is about face frames. I've seen a lot of people recommend assembling the full face frame first and then installing it as a unit, rather than attaching each rail and stile individually. What are the real advantages of building and installing the face frame as one piece versus installing it piece by piece? One complication in my situation is that my walls weren't perfectly square when I started, and as a result some of my cabinets aren't perfectly square either. I'm trying to figure out which approach will give me the best final result given those imperfections. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for all the knowledge you put out there—it's been a huge help on this project. Thank you, Casey Wood You Rather 1. The first question is about accuracy. What is your own degree of tolerance when it comes to measurements, without going crazy? I guess it depends on the project, but for example, when cutting panels to specific dimensions with a track saw, do you try to get the measurements down to the nearest 1/16th? nearest 1/32nd? 1/64th? 2. On a related note, the measuring marks on the ruler or parallel guides of course have a width themselves… Do you place your pencil or stop pointer just before the line/mark, in the middle of the line, or just after the line? Does it not matter as long as you're consistent? I know this isn't NASA, but I don't want the project to ultimately look amateurish. Josh Guys Questions: First, thank you for answering my other questions. Guy points out that Rubio Monocoat is made for wood floors when others talk about using it on wood furniture. Is there an actual disadvantage or problem with using Rubio on fine furniture when you want a finish that can withstand the abuse that a floor gets? Thanks again for the great show! George 3. Any advice for staining blotchy baltic birch plywood with Gel stain and tips for finishing with water-based urethane topcoat? I have heard so many different opinions, from putting a slip coat of mineral spirits, to using preconditioner, to applying gel stain directly on the wood, etc. Josh Huys Questions: I am working on a large kitchen cabinet project and have come across a few questions I thought would make good discussion. Project includes 16 base cabinets, 14 uppers, range hood and a couple of custom spice racks, open shelves etc. Upper will have 14" upper uppers stacked on them with glass fronts. Lowers are almost entirely drawers. Carcasses are about done heading into face frames and drawers. -Ripping down face frame lumber. When batching out large amounts of 1 1/2" strips what is your preferred method. Table saw then sand? Table saw proud then plane? Table saw then drum sand? Will a bandsaw with ripping blade provide a nicer edge? Major concerns are efficiency and accuracy while avoiding saw marks that have to be hand sanded off. -Ever use a shaper to add dado on 8' strips of wood for drawer box parts? Wondering if there is a good way to setup the shaper with power feeder to run through all the strips then cut to length. Essentially making my own drawer blanks. Any other thoughts or recommendations when batching out large cabinet projects. Matt I have the Grizzly benchtop oscillating edge and spindle sander that I believe a couple of you have mentioned owning currently or in the past. I'm working on some oak glue-ups that are using some odd angles that will be template routed later. The problem I'm having is that when I use the edge sander to dial in these pieces my edges are getting slightly rounded over and becoming convex. I'd love to have a large disk sander but this is what I'm working with and I can't figure out if it's a tension or pressure issue or the oscillation is causing it… any help is greatly appreciated! Keep up the great work! Shawn
Most people think grizzly bear is inedible or only fit for trophies. Chef Chris Irving flips that narrative, sharing how he prepares and celebrates this often-misunderstood meat proving it can be delicious, sustainable, and deeply connected to land and culture. In this episode, Chris takes us into the wilds of the Yukon, where he's been cooking grizzly bear and other game meats with respect and expertise. He explains the meticulous process of handling primal cuts, emphasizing that grizzly bear can rival the best beef or lamb when treated thoughtfully. Discover how slow-cooking and proper trimming can transform tough, lean game into tender, flavorful dishes that challenge stereotypes and inspire new culinary possibilities. This episode reshapes narratives around grizzly bear hunting and cultural identity, offering fresh insights into the potential that grizzly bear meat can nourish and unite us. For decades, the hunting and conservation community has advocated—through organizations, programs, and initiatives—for educating the non-hunting majority on the value of hunting to wildlife and habitat conservation. This need is even enshrined in the Wild Sheep Foundation mission: to educate the public and youth on sustainable use. But have we succeeded? Is this focus still critical? And how do we move the needle on public perception? In this episode, Mark Hall of the Wild Origins Canada Foundation joins Gray N. Thornton to explore how storytelling can reach the "moderate middle"—impacting, educating, informing, and challenging thought around hunting and conservation. They discuss what messages resonate, which fall flat, and how to shape hearts and minds in a changing landscape. Mark also shares the vision behind Project Grizzly Balance—an effort to restore the sustainable use of grizzly bears across British Columbia and beyond for the benefit of both wildlife and people.

To kick off Nuanez Now, Colter Nuanez is joined by an FCS expert and former Grizzly receiver Sammy Akem to take a deep dive into the FCS landscape, including a preview of Montana State's upcoming spring game and a discussion on the controversy surrounding recent FCS quarterback rankings, along with insight on the biggest storylines across the subdivision.Later, Colter reports on the results from the Big Sky Women's Golf Championship, highlighting strong performances from both Montana and Montana State, including a third-place finish for the Bobcats, led by junior Norah Seidl, who captured the individual conference title in a playoff after firing a 67 in the final round.
On this unbearable episode of The Great Hang Podcast Tim is trying to get a new saying off the ground. Myka is concerned with Tim's knowledge of pick up artist culture. Tim had a good play in softball, Myka doesn't seem to care. We talk a little about D4vd and the case they have against him. Riffman shows up during the Hot Take segment, and this week's news is pretty Grizzly. The Advice Tim wanted to get got taken down and he of course didn't screenshot so now they are giving some friendship advice to some idiots. Today, in episode 814, things go wrong during the recording of an April Fool's Day episode of The Yeti Spaghetti Show which was originally a test broadcast LIVE from outer space; although sadly things did not quite go to plan. However, as usual the show is introduced by Cromitty and Yeti Uncle John and their special guests are Grizzly and Charlotte! Along the way the gang experienced technology issues and some pre-recorded material was played whilst Ikk put things back together again! This material includes a previously unreleased article recorded with Paul and Toppie Smellie which was originally intended for Round The Archives, before it sadly went on hiatus. There are also some additional agony aunt recordings concerning rollerskating mice! Thank you to Grizzly, Gianluca and Toppie Smellie for his help with this edition. Our next show, #815 sees Paul and Martin Holmes returning to 1979 as the decade is about to change! Do join us! Email us at shyyeti@yahoo.co.uk if you have comments - you can even send audio and I'll include it. The music is by Udio and Various Artists. Sound effects are by Shy Yeti and Pixabay. Episode 814 was recorded on the 23rd February 2026, with the article recorded on the 15th March 2025 and agony aunt letters recorded on 12th April 2026. Cuthbert's commentary was recorded on the 15th April 2026.
Brians Questions: I am getting ready to build a mission style entertainment center. This project will use what I'm told is arched pedestal legs which was used a lot by Gustav Stickley. I will be gluing up three 5 3/4"x 28" quarter sawn white oak blanks to make the legs. I will then route the curve using a compression bit and template which I made using the Shaper Origin. My question is what are some good methods to ensure there is a tight (almost invisible) line on the glue up of the blanks. The legs are going to be a major feature on this piece and I would hate for the lines to be visible. I've done glue ups for square legs before and have pretty good success although not perfect. I know grain match is a big deal but wanted to pick your guys brains on clamping methods, glue type and anything else you can suggest to ensure success. Yours is the best podcast on the net. Tom Young I recently upgraded from a 9” ryobi bench top bandsaw to a craftsman 10” Floor standing. I'd like to build a mobile base for it. My question is, how tall should the table be? Should it be elbow high? Waste high? Higher ? Lower? For context, I'm mostly a hand tool guy and, although I have a dinky table saw, I don't use it much, favoring the bandsaw. I'll do some light resawing and other more detailed work with it. Thanks guys and Guy. Love the show.Jason Guys Questions: I am working on a large kitchen cabinet project and have come across a few questions I thought would make good discussion. -Drawer box preferences or use cases for solid wood vs plywood with edge banding. I am leaning towards plywood due to number I need (38), being simpler to use prefinished ply then mill down rough cut. But it seems like cheating.....Large Pots and pans drawers 3/4" sides or 5/8" sides? -Drawer box construction when using overlay fronts. I do not have a dovetail jig. I may end up just pocket screwing them which is what I have done in the past but I wanted to add an upscale touch. I tried my domino with Sipo dominoes, pin nailed the box together first and then put two 5x30 dominoes in. To me the hole created was not that tight with the domino, didn't look nice. I see some YouTube experts make it seem easy, any experience or thoughts? Also thought of using drawer lock bit on the new to me shaper I just picked up but no experience yet. (Grizzly 3hp) Thoughts or preferences? Any other thoughts or recommendations when batching out large cabinet projects. Matt Hola Y'all, I have been listening to y'all for a little over a year, and woodworking for two years. Best Podcast on the interwebs! I was recently gifted a used Grizzly Go555 14" 1HP. I have never owned a Bandsaw and I want to use it mainly for resawing. I was told it is working fine, but I prefer to "Trust, but Verify". My questions are: 1. What tune-up/preventive maintenance should I do immediately? 2. What upgrades should I do for resawing hardwood? Thanks so much! Peace, Love, and Sawdust Norris Sebastian Grandad's Workshop Huy's Questions: Hey guys! I am a full-time journeyman carpenter and I work in the commercial sector around the Indianapolis area. Currently working at the new IU Health Hospital downtown. I've been doing carpentry professionally for nearly 9 years. Almost half of a year ago, I decided to purchase a 4x4 shapeoko 5 pro and got involved with learning about cnc. As friends and family found out about my new acquired skill, I've been asked to make various types of wood related projects-some requiring cnc and some that don't. I have a decent amount of handheld power tools and jobsite tools I've acquired through the years. Thankfully those tools have helped me in completing non-cnc related projects but my problem is the lack of woodworking tools and equipment at my disposal. Many times I've turned down projects due to not having the right tools. Other times I've taken extra steps to complete tasks, but had I just had the right tool, it could've been a breeze. I want to have a nice wood shop in my barn eventually but not sure how to prioritize my wants and needs. Considering trading the cnc to instantly increase my wood shop tool budget and maybe revisiting it in the future. With a focus on increasing my wood working tools and building up my shop—What are some upgrades/ tool trades/ must-have-tools to kickstart my wood shop? What tools should I get rid of? Tools at my current disposal/ 4x4 shapeoko 5 pro, a dw 8-1/4” table saw, dw 735 planer, dw 10” miter saw, Bosch random orbital sander, metabo belt sander , ridgid oscillating spindle sander, central machine drill press, various dw drills/ impacts/ saw zalls/ oscillator/ hammer drill/ jig saw/ circular saw etc. Tools that could've made my life easier in the past- a jointer, band saw, track saw, drum sander, router table, etc Thanks, Holden P.s. My dad and I carpool together during the work week and love listening to the podcast-we especially have come fond of Guy's no bs, straightforward attitude. Keep up the good work! Korey from Independence, KY again. I was thinking about getting radial arm saw to use exclusively for dados. I have never seen a radial arm saw in person. They can be found very cheaply on Facebook marketplace and space in not an issue for me. Do you think it would be worth it and can you use it to cut dados safely. What are some other good uses for a radial arm saw. Thank you and keep up the good work. Korey

Happy Monday, everybody. This week, Tyler and I are getting into lockers — specifically, which locker is actually best for the situation you’re in. We covered the basics back in episode 460, so if you’re brand new to this stuff, go check that one out first. Today we’re going deeper: we ran through the main use cases — mud, sand, snow, rock crawling, high-speed Baja-style, and more — and debated which locker type wins in each one. We covered all six categories: open diff, limited slip/Posi-Trac, mechanical auto-lockers (Detroit, Grizzly), slow-speed selectables (e-lockers, OX), high-speed selectables (air lockers like ARB), and spools/welded diffs. It got a little heated on the mud section right out of the gate, which is why we just started recording. You’ll hear it. A few things we covered this week before the main discussion: https://www.snailtrail4x4.com/460-lockers/ **Gift Box Month** — April is gift box month.
