There is a scene in the 1999 documentary Beyond the Mat where Dennis Stamp tells Terry Funk why he's not going to be at his retirement show: "Because I'm not booked." Dennis would end up appearing on the show, but "I'm not booked" became a classic line from the movie. In music, there are plenty of songs that are "not booked," so to speak, in that they don't make the original tracklist for the album. They might end up appearing on B-sides, reissues, deluxe editions, compilation albums, or box sets. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Kevin Hare (Voices of Wrestling, 185 Miles South) play a selection of songs that didn't get booked. Artists played include Alkaline Trio, Faces, Chamillionaire, Oasis, Black Flag, The KLF, The Undertones, and many more. Grab the weights and jump on the trampoline, because you never know when the next booking will come.Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrewListen to Kevin on the 185 Miles South podcast: 185milessouth.comAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Eclipse 2026: Where, When & How to Watch (Both Hemispheres)

Astronomy Daily - The Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2026 16:18 Transcription Available

In this episode •      Shadow Day: the only total solar eclipse of 2026 crosses Arctic Russia, Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain today — the first total eclipse over western mainland Europe since 1999 (Spain's first since 1905, Iceland's since 1954). Max totality ~2 min 18 s. Reykjavík ~17:48 UT; northern Spain ~18:27–18:33 UT (Sun very low, ~4–10° up). Live via NASA, timeanddate and the Exploratorium. •      Where you are: North America gets an afternoon partial (Nova Scotia ~33%, N. Maine ~28%, Montreal ~18%, Boston ~16%, NYC ~9–10%, Toronto ~8%, DC ~10%; Fairbanks ~37% in the morning) — no totality anywhere on the continent, glasses on throughout. Europe outside the path sees a deep evening partial (London ~91%). Australia/SH: not visible directly — watch the streams (~1:30–6:00 am AEST Thu). •      Chasing the shadow: NASA's WB-57 jet flies the path at ~50,000 ft (~740 km/h), extending totality to nearly 3 minutes with four visible/IR cameras (SCIFI) to probe coronal heating, prominences and the solar wind (PI Amir Caspi, SwRI). The Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project (A. Des Jardins, Montana State) launches ~86 balloons from Iceland and Spain to measure atmospheric changes. •      A star-building magnetic field: ALMA captures the first direct high-resolution image of a twisted, toroidal magnetic field wrapped around a protostellar jet in NGC 1333 IRAS 4A (~960 ly, Perseus cloud), confirming a decades-old prediction of how young stars launch jets and shed spin — the same physics that scales up to black-hole jets (Ching et al., Nature Communications 2026; NSF NRAO/ALMA). •      Why worlds turn hellish: UC Riverside's Stephen Kane argues planetary rotation is an overlooked driver of climate and habitability — slow spin may help tip a world into a Venus-style runaway greenhouse. Measuring true spin is hard because winds can masquerade as rotation; ESA's PLATO (launch March 2027) could test the idea across hundreds of Venus-like planets (Astronomical Journal, accepted). •      Skywatch — both hemispheres: the Perseids peak overnight 12–13 Aug under a genuinely moonless sky (best midnight–dawn; NH-favoured). Southern Hemisphere: evening Venus (mag −4.4, just past dichotomy), the pre-dawn planet line-up, and Comet 10P/Tempel 2. ISO 12312-2 eye-safety line included.   Sources •      NASA Science — Total Solar Eclipse on August 12, 2026; “NASA Science Soars During August Total Solar Eclipse” •      timeanddate; Eclipsophile; NationalEclipse.com; azmth.space — path, contact times, magnitudes •      Astronomy.com; Forbes; CBS News — North American partial times & percentages •      Space.com; Smithsonian — WB-57 SCIFI campaign & Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project •      NSF NRAO / phys.org — Ching et al., “Unveiling dominant toroidal magnetic fields in a protostellar outflow,” Nature Communications (2026) •      UC Riverside (news.ucr.edu) / phys.org — S. Astronomy Daily · S05E164 “Eclipse Eve” · Tuesday 11 August 2026. Sources are primary/agency where possible; aggregator dates were checked against originals. In this episode •    LEAD — The 12 August total solar eclipse: the only total eclipse of 2026 and the first over mainland Europe since 1999. Totality arcs from Siberia over the North Pole to eastern Greenland, western Iceland, northern Spain and a sliver of Portugal; maximum totality ~2 min 18 s. Partial for much of North America near sunset; not visible from Australia. ESA livestreams from the Javalambre Observatory, Spain. •    MIDDLE 1 — A state CASC Long March 7A exploded ~85 seconds after lifting off from Wenchang on 10 August, a total loss (payload reported as the Zhongxing-4B communications satellite). Separately, Landspace's private Zhuque-3 was on the same-night manifest from Jiuquan for its second propulsive landing-legs recovery attempt — outcome unconfirmed at recording. China's first orbital-booster landing (net-capture, Long March 10B) already succeeded on 10 July. •    MIDDLE 2 — The Perseids peak overnight 12–13 August under a New Moon — the darkest conditions in roughly two decades. Parent comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Realistic ~30–50 meteors/hr from dark sites (nominal ~100), with a slim chance of a dust-trail boost; the next confidently forecast outburst is 2028. •    MIDDLE 3 — Japan's H3 launched Michibiki No. 7 (QZS-7) from Tanegashima, bringing the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System up to the strength Japan needs to run it as a standalone service — a regional navigation layer that keeps a satellite near the zenith over Japan/Asia-Pacific, reinforcing GPS and building navigation resilience. The satellite also hosts a US Space Force space-surveillance sensor (SACHI). •    CLOSER — Both-hemispheres skywatch: eclipse viewing times (totality window ~16:58–18:34 UT, greatest ~17:46 UT) and the ISO 12312-2 eye-safety rule; Perseid how-to for the North (best 2 a.m.–dawn); and Southern-Hemisphere content — pre-dawn planets, evening Venus, Comet 10P/Tempel 2. Eye safety •    A partial eclipse is never safe to view with the naked eye. Use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses/viewers, or indirect projection (pinhole). Direct viewing is only safe during true totality, and only inside the path (Greenland, Iceland, Spain). What does a safari look like when the guide isn't a man? Award-winning writer and editor Ellen Carpenter went to Botswana's Okavango Delta to find out. (To learn more, read her Afar story about the experience.) Meet this week's guests Ellen Carpenter is a New York–based culture and travel journalist. She served as editor in chief of Hemispheres, United's inflight magazine, for seven years, and before that was an editor at Rhapsody, Nylon, Spin, and Rolling Stone. Baemule "Bae" Siethuka, 32, grew up in Tutume in northeastern Botswana and was working in HR when she saw African Bush Camps' guiding program posted on Facebook. She became the program's first graduate in 2025 and is now a junior guide at Atzaró Okavango. Tshidi Phalaagae, 28, is a trainee guide from Gaborone, Botswana's capital — a true city girl who came to the program with, in her words, "zero knowledge of nature." At the time of Ellen's visit, she was just a few weeks shy of graduating. Jessica Motshegwa, 26, is a trainee guide from Mmadinare, Botswana, who joined the program in 2025. He explains how Cuba remains a geopolitical foothold for intelligence activity and how changes in leadership or policy could significantly alter the balance of power in the Western Hemisphere. The conversation expands into broader regional strategy, including coordinated pressure on Venezuela and the effort to limit Chinese influence through infrastructure and port control across the Americas. Harding also addresses Iran policy, emphasizing the shared U.S. and regional objective of preventing a nuclear-armed Iran, while noting that Gulf allies such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE now align more closely with Washington due to Tehran's use of proxy forces and regional destabilization. He frames the current moment as a strategic “chessboard” where U.S. actions are increasingly interconnected across multiple theaters rather than isolated conflicts. The discussion explores how recent geopolitical shifts — including changes in Bolivia, increased counter-cartel cooperation with Mexico, new regional military coalitions, and Nicaragua distancing itself from Cuban migration routes — point toward a broader realignment away from Russian and Chinese influence in Latin America. Kempfer breaks down the strategic implications of renewed U.S. dominance in the region, the role of covert and overt pressure campaigns, and why Cuba may be approaching a historic turning point that could reshape hemispheric security for decades to come.Takeaways:The U.S. may pursue criminal charges against Raúl Castro over the 1996 Brothers to the Rescue shootdown.Cuba faces increasing economic and political pressure from Washington.Regional governments are shifting away from alliances with Russia and China.Bolivia's new leadership signals a return toward closer U.S. relations.Mexico is quietly expanding cooperation with U.S. counter-cartel operations.Nicaragua's policy changes suggest regional leaders are recalculating their stance toward the U.S.Operation Southern Spear and the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition demonstrate growing military coordination in the hemisphere.A collapse or transformation of Cuba's communist system would dramatically reshape Western Hemisphere geopolitics.#STRATPodcast #HalKempfer #MutualBroadcastingSystem #StrategicRiskAnalysis #Cuba #RaulCastro #BrothersToTheRescue #WesternHemisphere #Geopolitics #LatinAmerica #USForeignPolicy #Communism #CIA #CounterCartel #NationalSecurity #CubaCrisis #Russia #China #Narcoterrorism #GlobalThreats

In this episode, we return to Iain McGilchrist as he spirals upwards from his binary hemispheric model into full cosmic spirituality. The rule is simple: everything McGilchrist likes is due to the subtle, nuanced, and deeply sophisticated right brain, while the left brain (pffft) is responsible for reductionism, modernity, and most of the problems in your life. From this neuroscientific foundation, the theory expands with admirable ambition. Civilisations rise and fall depending on which hemisphere they inhabit. Ancient societies were properly attuned to the right brain, while the modern world has gone mechanical and spiritually bankrupt. The details are, of course, very complex, but the moral is clear.Scientific evidence features occasionally, mostly in a decorative capacity or as parables of scientists being baffled by mystical forces. Hence, we learn that decapitated worms retain perfect memories, Nobel Prizes have been awarded for demonstrating a mystical direction powering evolution, and near-death experiences establish that memories form when the brain isn't functioning.Alongside this hard science, McGilchrist also ventures into more spiritual realms, where we learn that artificial intelligence is likely to be channelling demons, schizophrenia might be caused by malign spiritual forces treating our brains as a luxury resort, and recently exorcised demons prefer to communicate via text message. No really...Ultimately, what matters is that McGilchrist's bespoke theology, bespoke metaphysics, bespoke biological teleology, and bespoke panentheist philosophy are really very impressive. And if you don't find any of it compelling, well, we are sad to inform you that this itself proves you are stuck in the wrong mode of thinking and failing to recognise true profundity. And if that doesn't work, then let's just say it was all a metaphor anyway!LinksAlex O' Connor: Why Evolution Gave You Two Brains - Iain McGilchristJonathan Pageau: Artificial Intelligence, Possession, and Mental Illness - Dr. Iain McGilchristThink Faith: Philosopher Iain McGilchrist DEBATES neuroscientist Anil Seth on God & minds | Uncommon GroundSpezio, M. 1. Support for Regime Change Without “Boots on the Ground” Regime change can be morally and strategically justified when it leads to the fall of tyrannical or hostile regimes (e.g., Soviet Union, Iran). Strongly distinguishes between: Non-military or indirect regime change (diplomatic pressure, moral support, rhetoric, economic pressure) Full-scale military invasions, which the speaker opposes based on lessons from Iraq and Libya. Frames “regime change” as a concept unfairly discredited due to past U.S. military failures. 2. Historical Analogy: Reagan and the Cold War Ronald Reagan is a model: “Peace through strength,” rebuilding the military without large-scale invasions. Moral clarity and public rhetoric (e.g., “evil empire,” “tear down this wall”) are catalysts for systemic collapse. The power of words and leadership signaling can inspire dissidents inside authoritarian regimes. 3. Iran as an Active Enemy of the United States Iran is fundamentally different from prior dictatorships: Actively funds terrorism targeting Americans Governed by a theocratic regime portrayed as irredeemable Open U.S. rhetorical and moral support for Iranian protesters and dissidents. Acknowledges uncertainty and risks following a revolution but argues the status quo is worse. 4. Venezuela: Engagement With María Corina Machado A bipartisan Senate meeting with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado following her meeting with President Trump. Highlights her strategic emphasis on: U.S. unity Avoiding partisan attacks on Trump She is an effective, pragmatic opposition leader acting in Venezuela’s national interest. Strong ties between U.S. senators and Venezuelan communities, especially in Florida and Texas. 5. Trump’s Role in Global Opposition Movements Donald Trump’s leadership and rhetoric is a motivating force behind opposition movements in: Iran Venezuela Cuba These three countries are simultaneously nearing potential regime collapse or elections. Claims this could represent the most significant geopolitical shift since the fall of the Berlin Wall, while acknowledging high risks. 6.
