Pascal Finette, Co-Founder of beradical Group says that common sense, isn't always common practice. The simplicity of execution is paramount when innovating, but it is human to complicate. When digging into what innovation actually looks like on the frontline, it usually is much more messy, iterative and raw than how the MBA and strategy books make it seem. When companies are inspired to bring folks on who can run through walls and cowboy their way through problems; it is typically short-lived because these "cowboys" don't conform to corporate culture. Doing some thing new requires bold action, but you can't require a cowboy to wear a suit and clean boots, while trying to trudge through the mud. Looking For Adventure? We're once again joined by Pascal Finnette, co-founder and chief heretic of be radical. Be radical is a guiding force for organizations seeking to restructure in anticipation of future challenges, and it inspires individuals to evolve into leaders prepared for the demands of tomorrow's world. I've engaged in numerous discussions with Pascal about shifting mindsets and embracing disruption. In this episode, we delve deeper into the realm of artificial intelligence, seamlessly continuing our exploration from the previous episode featuring Don Tomoff on how CPAs can initiate their journey with A.I.Pascal recently delivered a thought-provoking address at the digital CPA conference, asserting, "Companies and individuals leveraging A.I. won't just outperform those who refrain from its use; they will exponentially surpass them." Similar sentiments have echoed lately, urging us to harness the power of A.I. to our professional advantage. The expectations surrounding the transformative impact of this technology on our work, lives, and the world are immense. While most c-suite executives anticipate cost savings this year through A.I.'s contributions to increased productivity, streamlined operations, improved customer service, and enhanced I.T., it's essential to recognize that A.I. cannot entirely replace human expertise in addressing the intricacies of tax and financial assessment problems. Many of the cutting-edge technologies developed by vendors are still works in progress.Despite ongoing refinement needs, the utilization and potential of A.I. are experiencing rapid growth, making it an undeniable game changer. In my conversation with Pascal, we explore how A.I. has already reshaped our work and lifestyles. We discuss the challenge of regulating A.I., the first steps CPAs should consider when integrating A.I. into their business, and focus on what isn't going to change. Pascal Finette is a well-respected entrepreneur and innovation expert with a wealth of knowledge and insights to share about achieving success in the business world. Having led entrepreneurship and open innovation tracks at Singularity University, Pascal is an experienced mentor and coach with a focus on amplifying positive change in the world. He is an advocate for finding companies with a greater purpose and mission, and emphasizes the importance of taking risks and being open to new opportunities. Pascal has also recently released a book, Disruption: How to Decode the Future, Disrupt Your Industry, and Transform Your Business, which shares his insights on innovation and navigating disruption in the business world. Pascal provides insights into the mindset and experiences of a successful entrepreneur and innovator. In this episode of the Unlearn Podcast, host Barry O'Reilly converses with Pascal Finette about the importance of purpose, community, and an innovative, risk-taking spirit. He shares his story as he encourages listeners to follow their intuition and take action. Following Your Intellectual Curiosity Rather than being guided by a clear plan or strategy, Pascal relied on his gut feeling to guide him towards interesting opportunities. While his resume looks impressive in hindsight, he acknowledges that in the moment, his decisions never seemed to make any sense. By being willing to say yes to opportunities that presented themselves, he was able to forge a unique path that ultimately led to success. This eagerness to take risks and try new things is an important trait for anyone looking to innovate and create change in their personal or professional life. As Pascal puts it, "if it doesn't work out, it's fine.” Open Innovation Open innovation is about creating a community of people, including customers and collaborators, for the purpose of building something together. This is based on the principles of how communities work together, such as how the Amish build a church or a building. The idea is to apply these principles to the world of business to create something greater than what one organization or team could create on their own. Companies like Mozilla have made their code open source, inviting people to contribute to make it better for the benefit of everyone. In its heyday, something like 40% of Firefox's code was written by volunteers, Pascal points out. be radical be radical is a company that helps individuals and organizations discover what matters for their future and how they can go and transform. Pascal was inspired to start this company while working at Singularity University where he helped people see the future differently, particularly when it comes to technology. Pascal found that there was an interesting gap between people seeing what could be and not knowing what to do about it. He wanted to help people build a future they could see. Looking Ahead Pascal is looking forward to the changes that AI will bring to the way we think about information retrieval, especially in terms of crafting better questions rather than just seeking answers. He believes that we are at a pivotal moment where the systems that define the web will change dramatically, and the way we think about browsers, searching, and information retrieval will change. Pascal is excited to see how people will make use of these changes and what they will create from them. Pascal Finette, Co-Founder & Chief Heretic of the be radical Group, is back on the show to share insights from his new book “Disrupt Disruption” and provide perspective on how we navigate the future. After speaking with many Leaders and industry operators, a common thread as it pertains to innovation, is that the glamour of it was not obvious when doing the work. The way innovation is talked about in magazines and on TV, is not the same way it is seen, in the trenches. Pascal shares that innovating for innovation's sake is not always the best intent, when trying to create real value. Most of what is disruptive is actually common sense, but not common practice. If organizations are able to scale this mentality and practice, the opportunities for growth are endless. Common practice is about using simple tools to attack complex problems. Specialized methods are only good for specific applications, nuanced issues and for a certain amounts of time. Pascal also shares that many companies want “Cowboys” to help them pave a new path, without accepting everything that comes with it. Much of making a difference is messy and requires boldness, but most folks don't have the stomach or patience for it. As companies grow, continuing to find greater purpose is key. Many companies struggle to keep talent, innovate and grow because it is not clear why they exist. Utility alone is not enough to push a Team forward, but understanding that what you do is making an impact and adjusting tactics to fulfill you mission, is paramount. Although the future is uncertain, we can decide how to influence it. Pascal says that we often articulate the future as just a single point in time, but there are actually multiple futures and opportunities to impact that future. What will you do to influence yours? And the one thing you don't want to beat out of them because, unfortunately, we do it and have a tendency to do it. It's curiosity... Kids ask, like, why, why, why, why. And then the unfortunate reality is we send them to school and beat it out of them, right? We say no, no, no, stop asking why here's the book, read it. For man, however, the root is man himself.” So, radical compassion, empathy, generosity, leadership, humanity - perhaps it's time to be a radical.  Pascal Finette is a founder of a boutique advisory firm, Be Radical, and the ‘posse leader' at The Heretic, one of my favorite–very opinionated–newsletters. Pascal Finette, Chief Heretic and Co-Founder of be radical, is helping companies better understand their futures and pursue them with a practical approach. Pascal's experience spans Leadership roles at technology titans like Google and Mozilla, to the world of start-ups and VCs. After years as an operator, he now finds his purpose in helping companies better understand their future, what they can do to achieve it and how to stay grounded in that pursuit. Pascal describes how be radical's "jester" approach allows his Team to be unfiltered and extremely honest with their client's, because like a jester, there is no personal gain for telling the king/queen the truth. He shares his perspective on what makes founders and their companies go the distance. Much of being a successful entrepreneur is perseverance- Understand that what you're doing has to personally matter and completely embrace that your endeavor will take longer than you think. Additionally, starting a company to grow and scale may not be for everyone. There's no shortage of success stigmas that have unfortunately mis-guided aspiring entrepreneurs- He talks about his time working in tech and how it was culturally shameful to be making a living in a company that was not destined for billions. As this narrative continues today, Pascal believes that companies and individuals really need to check their north star. However, if you are one of those folks who is meant to pursue this endeavor, Pascal outlines the foundational undercurrents in the market and how successful entrepreneurs understand how to tap into those currents, instead of create new ones. Those currents can be entertainment, transportation, communication, etc, but whether it's a horse & buggy or new electric car, getting somewhere is the constant. He shares that entrepreneurs can struggle when their idea or business doesn't solve a fundamental human need. Pascal and the be radical Team continues to help great companies pursue their futures more pragmatically and be the outside voice that helps organizations call their own BS and cut through the noise. Previously he held leadership positions at Google.org, Mozilla, eBay, built technology startups and launched a Venture Capital firm. So it was most natural that we discussed vividly the changes that need to disrupt society to welcome new technologies. “I think a lot of the tension comes from the fact that we're living in a society which was not built for this age and we need to really rapidly upgrade our societies.

“Our mission is to educate, inspire and empower leaders to apply exponential technologies to address humanity’s grand challenges.” Pascal Finette of Singularity University is the Vice Chairman of their Startup Program for Next-Generation Entrepreneurs who will be creating exponential organizations that leverage Exponential Technologies. Pascal details how some startups are utilizing exponential technology to find creative solutions to complex problems that affect literally billions of people. Two examples are Made in Space (3D Printing in zero gravity on the Space Station), and Miroculus – analyzing RNA (a Subset of DNA) in the blood, which helps identify various cancers super early, possibly allowing for better treatment and less mortality. Further he explains some of the core challenges startups face – ex: failure of a team to work together as the main downfall of startups. Pascal says a company must be “a team effort rather than a one man show” – that's why Co- Founded companies are preferred over single founders. I recently had a wonderful talk with Pascal Finette. I am really excited to share our conversation on the exponential technologies with you. Pascal is the head of Singularity University's SU Labs, where he leverages most intractable problems with cutting-edge technologies. One of the concepts we have delved into during our discussion was the concept of innovating organization at the edge instead of the core and how to approach growth through the lens of this concept. A lot of us are familiar with innovation when it comes to processes. How is it done with a product that is a business unit? Listen to more about the question to ask about open-sourcing, concept of “crow funding”, and the importance of moonshot thinking and exploring more at the edge.  4 Key Learning Points: The importance of the innovation at the edge of the core of an organization. The importance of moonshot thinking and asking big questions. What to be aware of when it comes to implementing open source concept. How to use the crowd funding mechanism to utilize talent from outside of the organization.
