Dr. Allen Yeh shares about generational distinctives and provides perspective on how this impacts views on faith, values, church, and global missions. “When we talk about culture, it's not just ethnicity and nationality or even gender, it's also age. So the different generations are different cultures, even if they come from the same country.” “With Gen Zers, it's harder to reach them with the institutional church. It's not necessarily that they are less interested in Christianity; it's just that the traditional methods don't work as well.” True Story: A Christianity Worth Believing In by James Choung “The four generations each have a gateway question in order to reach them. For Boomers, their gateway question is ‘what is true?' For Gen Xers, our gateway question is ‘what is real?' For Millennials, the gateway question is “what is good?' and for Gen Zers, the gateway question is ‘what is beautiful?'” “If you look at Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the numbers of Christians continue to grow, and in the West, the number of Christians continues to decline.” “If the Global Church is starting to look more like the first century church, I think this will attract Gen Zers.” “We need to be much more sensitive about our language with Gen Z. Maybe a better word than ‘mission' could be something like ‘witness.' That is actually a Biblical word.” “The chief verb of the Great Commission is not to evangelize; it is to make disciples.” “Discipleship is a long obedience in the same direction.” - Eugene Peterson “In the West, we often teach that people have to do believing, then behaving, then belonging. But, in the Bible, it's more belonging, then believing, then behaving.” Jason Dorsey, The Center for Generational Kinetics “If the older generation always rolls their eyes at Gen Z and denigrates them, then Gen Z is not going to fulfill their potential; in fact, there's just going to be generational warfare.” “Gen Z has such a huge potential for fulfilling mission in this world.” What's changing our lives: Keane: Taking a trip to the mountains in North Carolina to go sledding Heather: Unseasonably warm days to read outside on my balcony Allen: Job transition Weekly Spotlight: Thinking Christian International School We'd love to hear from you! podcast@teachbeyond.org Podcast Website: https://teachbeyond.org/podcast Learn about TeachBeyond: https://teachbeyond.org/

No one likes change, but it is inevitable and we must grow and adapt to our every evolving world. Typically, unwillingness to change comes from a fear of learning a new way to do things. For example, adjusting to a smart phone from previous cell phone models took a whole lot of learning; but now they are the most efficient and powerful tool we have. As a business owner, it is absolutely necessary to follow the trends of the generation and, when possible, grow with them instead of trying to catch up. Generation Z, is the emerging generation that is not only the fastest growing, but the most diverse and influential. Baby boomers, Millennials, and Gen X follow the trends that Generation Z are setting, in business, lifestyle and social causes. This proves that it is now more important that ever to listen and understand the voice of this generation, in order to run a successful business. To help us better understand the mindset of Generation Z - I've brought on speaker and researcher, Jason Dorsey. Our panel of executive experts discuss Skip's most recent interview with Jason Dorsey and dig deeper on the subject of generational context.
Every generation has its strengths--and the role of leaders working with diverse generations is to leverage those strengths, make space for them to build bridges and engage with each other. That's the main message from Jason Dorsey, generation expert, author, and research guru. In this episode of "Aim Higher," Jason and I talk about how every generation has something to offer your business... if you take the time to learn from them. And since he's the foremost researcher on Gen Z, I know you'll want to hear what he has to say about this cohort who, at ages 16-24, are just now starting to enter the labor pool in full force.
While almost every financial institutions wants to market to, and build relationships with, the Gen Z consumer, few organizations understand who the Gen Z consumer is, what they want from a brand, how to market to them, or how to make them loyal customers. Just as importantly, few organizations understand how to recruit and retain them as loyal employees. Bottom line, the Gen Z consumer is often misunderstood or categorized only by their digital channel inclinations. Financial institutions need to much dig deeper to maximize the value of this important segment. We are joined today by Jason Dorsey, president of the Center for Generational Kinetics and the foremost leader in the understanding of the Gen Z consumer. On the show, Jason shares insights from his most recent global research that is featured in his new book, Zconomy, How Gen Z Will Change the Future of Business – And What to Do About It.
For years, experts have talked about millennials and looked towards the future of Generation Z, the generation to follow. But Gen Z is now here and already having a massive impact, both as employees and as consumers. Marketers need to understand Gen Z to realize its full impact and to separate the truth from long held myths. Generational researcher Jason Dorsey is an expert on all things Gen Z. He studies generational behavior so that leaders, marketers, employers and others can understand the differences between each generation. But he warns against putting generations in boxes. The wide range of ages and life experiences means that within a generation are multiple different groups. However, generations offer powerful clues that can drive trust and help marketers create valuable experiences by bringing them one step closer to understanding their consumers. Contrary to what many people think, Gen Z isn't made up entirely of teenagers. The group is growing up, so that the oldest members are now approaching their mid-20s. Gen Z is the fastest growing generation in the workforce. Most people view Gen Z as the next wave of millennials, but Dorsey's research shows that Gen Z is actually very different. He calls Gen Z a throwback generation that actually has more in common with baby boomers than millennials. Gen Z is one of the most frugal generations. They are more likely to use coupons and find deals than their millennial predecessors. They want to graduate college without debt and tend to care more about their workplace benefits. A large number of Gen Z is even already saving for retirement. Dorsey's research also found that Gen Z will soon leapfrog some millennials in the workforce, creating a strange combination of generations and ideologies. Gen Z is more likely to trust an influencer or someone like them over someone with advanced degrees. And because they've grown up with technology and smartphones, Gen Z values social media and the news it provides, but realizes it creates many mental health triggers. Gen Z doesn't remember 9/11, which was the generational defining event for millennials. Gen Z doesn't know life before 9/11, and their lives aren't shaped by the changes that happened after the event. Gen Z doesn't represent change because this is all they've ever known. In many ways, the COVID-19 pandemic will be the generational defining event for Gen Z and impact their mindset moving forward. So what does this mean for marketers? Understanding that Gen Z isn't simply millennials 2.0 is an important differentiation. Gen Z values different things than millennials and has different priorities. They also aren't the teenagers many have long considered Gen Z to be. Gen Z will have a tremendous impact on the workforce and the economy going forward as they become the most powerful generation. Understanding generations gives marketers clues and tools to know their consumers. With this understanding of generational cues, marketers can create more personalized experiences that best target this influential group. Top Takeaways:- To understand Generation Z as consumers is to understand the future of your (and every) business. They are the fastest growing generation in the workforce, the number one generation of consumer trendsetters (they even influence Baby Boomers!) and the most likely to write positive things online and recommend brands to others. - The oldest members of Gen Z are 25 and most of them do not remember 9/11. - While it’s important not to box people in by generation, knowing a customer’s generation can give you clues that help you better understand them. This, in turn, can help you faster connect, build trust and drive influence with those customers. - When making a purchase decision, Gen Z customers look for a few key things: low price, ease of purchase, ratings and reviews, ease of returns and if someone they know previously made that purchase. - Gen Z wants an experience before they buy something. When they do buy something, price (not the lowest price) is important to them and they always expect a good deal. They will pay more for an all-inclusive experience if they feel it is a better deal than the cheapest option. - Ease of purchase is all about asking yourself how simple you can make something so it just works. Often, this involves utilizing new tech—but be careful not to sacrifice the human connection! - Offering easy returns reduces the risk for online and first-time purchases, which consumers perceive to be very high-risk. Reducing risk helps overcome objection in the sales process. - Ratings and reviews are incredibly important to all consumers, not just Gen Z. Even more important is knowing someone personally who bought that product or service before. Family and friends’ opinions are the most trusted, even if their tastes do not match the purchaser’s. - To understand your consumer base better, create a generational snapshot and put it into a pie chart. Create practical urgency to bring in that next generation to ensure your business lasts. Quote:“Generations are not boxes. Generations are powerful and predictive clues. If you know those clues, you can faster connect with, build trust and drive influence, which is ultimately what customers want.” About:Jason Dorsey is the President and Co-Founder of The Center for Generational Kinetics as well as a leading generational researcher, speaker and author. Especialista: Nayara Martins (@nayaracffm) é Business Partner no Grupo Boticário. Today we talk about a fascinating topic, one that affects every single one of you in one way or another in your business. When we think about marketing, we tend to think about psychology in general and the things that inherently appeal to all people. But, there is a better way to approach marketing and it pertains to the different generations. Ever thought about why people of different ages think and behave so differently from one another and often bump heads, whether in families or in business? What we discuss today will shed a whole lot of light on this subject. We compare and contrast the generations, from the traditionalists up to Gen Z and everything in between. Each new generation is constructed in a unique way with different things that impact how they view the world and what kinds of consumers they are. For this reason, marketing efforts should be adjusted accordingly to ensure that you speak to the needs of the generation you are targeting and so that you better understand why certain initiatives will be more effective than others. We have relied heavily on the research of the amazing Jason Dorsey for this episode, so a lot of the information provided here is from his work on the topic. Definitely check out his website if you want to find out more. Jason also speaks about a very interesting new thought about millennials, one which we will get into on this episode, so be sure to tune in! Thank you for listening! We are at the Innovation Showcase this month. The show was great. There was no way to talk to all the amazing vendors. We did talk to Melanie Greben from Conagra Brands about snacking (:54), Pat Hughes from eGrowcery on how to optimize your labor force for online shopping (5:34), Steve Mehmert from T4 Solutions about e-commerce delivery solutions. Finally, we talked to one of the main speakers at the show, Jason Dorsey (26:38). Jason studies generational differences, and how retailers can harness those differences both in terms of sales and workforce management. Apologies for the sound issue on the conversation with Jason, but the information was too good to leave out.

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” —Theodore Roosevelt Your decision is clear—you’re going make your imprint in your industry. You work hard, do your research, and put yourself out there. Feeling great, you think, “I’ve got this!” Then, you watch as someone else brilliantly outshines you, and think, “I could never be that good, so why bother.” Deflated, you begin questioning your goals, and start wondering if you should try a different route to success. Has this happened to you? It happens to me nearly every time I watch someone deliver (what looks like) a flawless speech. It doesn’t matter whether I’m watching them on YouTube, in a small gathering, or on a giant stage. In fact, it doesn’t even matter if they speak on a totally different topic. Watching his ridiculously powerful stage presence, I found it difficult to stop analyzing the way he told his stories long enough to even appreciate how Dan Barber fell in love with a fish. Fortunately, I caught myself and was able to appreciate both his content and soak up his story-telling brilliance. It’s a love-hate relationship I have with talented speakers. I love their talent, passion, and dedication to the craft, but I also hate dealing with the inner monologue they prompt. Before I get a chance to appreciate their perspective, my internal monologue starts convincing me… "They’re already doing everything you want to do—and so much better—so what’s the point? Quit now. Go find something to focus on, where you can be the best." Of course, that doesn’t exist, and fortunately there will always be someone whose brilliance can help us develop and improve. Seriously though, why should I bother stirring up enthusiasm, productivity, and provoking greatness… across generations, when Eric Chester and Jason Dorsey are kicking some major butt out there? Seriously, their dedication, commitment, passion, and performance are top-notch. Hire them, and your audience will walk away not only more knowledgeable, but motivated. Here are a few other remarkable speakers who have prompted my “Why bother” monologue: Dr. Nido Qubein, Brené Brown, Seth Godin, Mark Scharenbroich, Lou Heckler. Of course, it’s not like we pick mediocre people to compare ourselves to—No, we chose award-winning superstars who consistently and courageously work at their craft. Ready to break free of the debilitating effect of such paralyzing comparisons, the following five steps aid greatly in remaining focused on moving your own ball forward: Notice and Acknowledge your thoughts. Please, do yourself a favor and avoid trying to hide, fade, or fix them. What we resist, persists. Simply begin to notice what you’re telling yourself. Get Curious. With the curiosity of a 5-year-old that has to know why, why, why, become curious about the nature of the conversation going on inside your head. Defuse your storyline. Rather than allow yourself to get caught up in self-judgment, consider literally saying to yourself, “Isn’t that interesting. I wonder where that thought comes from.” This allows you to remove the "good/bad, right/wrong" of the stories you're telling yourself. Remember where you started (or, are starting) and keep perspective on YOUR growth. Or, as Brene Brown suggested, “Stay in your own lane,” when she shared about her competitive nature in swimming. Act anyway. Keep practicing, keep learning, and keep sharing your passions, especially when that voice creeps in. Otherwise, we risk the possibility of allowing our fears to ruin our dreams. Repeat these steps over and over again as you bare silent witness to the magic of the process. And, remember: it's never about being the best, but giving your best every single day. As don Miguel Ruiz says, "Your best is different every day." Honor YOUR journey, listen, be curious, and keep moving your ball forward. "To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself." ― Thich Nhat Hanh Here’s to Your Greatness, Misti Burmeister NEW!
