"Every day as pediatric nurses, we used to take after-hours patient calls for a busy pediatric practice in Atlanta, meaning if any of the 9,000 patients had a question at night or on weekends, we got paged. For years, we answered questions from concerned parents who, interestingly, all had the same questions! We decided it was time to give parents a simple and easy-to-follow guide addressing their most common curiosities and concerns. This was so well received, our print-outs quickly grew into a library of resources including 3 books, 3 video courses, 2 apps and a flourishing network of consultants. Her passion for spreadsheets has guided me through slowly delving into the details. Her friendship sustains me. Her voice fills my heart with joy. She's the person I try to call when I get a free moment in the car. If you are a mom you know how sacred those moments are.Her resilience and tenacity inspire me. Her steady sails lead the way to uncharted adventure. I am who I am because she is who she is. We are constantly changing together, and I am deeply thankful for that. #thekindnessgames __________________ Kindness Matters: What does Kindness mean to you? This may be my most controversial interview yet! I'm interviewing award-winning author Laura Hunter, who recently released her book, Summer of No Rain. Being southern herself, Laura eloquently captures the southern culture of the 1960s in this fictional book based on real-life events. During her research as a writer, Laura Hunter stumbled upon a case of eugenics in Alabama made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The government was using a secret drug to sterilize "certain" populations. As an author who endorsed this book personally, I found this information extremely eye-opening because the drug is still in use today, and I myself was offered it in the 90s. This is an interview you don't want to miss! Laura Hunter's interview is also available inside of GEMS Magazine. After interviewing Laura I felt it was important to add my editorial thoughts to both the magazine article and at the end of this Podcast interview because we touched on some controversial topics and used some terms that many may be sensitive to, especially during the time of the airing of this interview, February - which is Black History Month. I asked Laura Hunter the direct question, "How do you justify (as some may feel you need to) being a White author writing about Black topics?" And she gave me her very frank answer. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ If you're an author interested in being a guest on Dropping GEMS make sure you're signed up on my email list, so you can be first in the know, when I call out for guests. How do you build a healthy, connected, and intentional life that fulfills your greatest purpose? In this episode, Caroline Fausel shares how it all started. She talks about her journey, how she became an intentionalist and why she created this podcast. A voracious reader herself, Caroline also shares some books that have changed her life and shaped her aspiration for intentionalism in all aspects of her life. For instance, the book “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer heavily influenced her to become vegetarian. She thought it was a good way to bio-hack her genetics and keep certain diseases at bay. Learning about factory farming and what's in our food also sparked her passion for the environment. She believes that while individual action is not enough to turn the entire environment around, it's definitely a huge part of it, and it's something she could do. Eventually, upon reading “It Starts with Food” by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig, which talks about nutrition science, she went straight from vegan to the paleo-based Whole30 diet, which she and her husband, Chaz, did for 30 days. It was an intense time but they felt better than ever and they became more intentional about what they were eating. And so, the book is what started it all for her – the lifestyle, the blog, and this podcast. In this episode, Caroline shares how becoming intentional has dramatically changed the way she lives her life – as a wife, as a mother, and as a human being. In this episode, you will hear: Books on nutrition Books on minimalism Books on marriage Books on parenting Books on personal growth and development Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? I had a wonderful conversation with Catriona MacDonald, Kari Stultz and Laura Hunter on April 18, 2021. I have recorded podcasts with each of them but Laura's had some technical difficulties. I had a wonderful time speaking with these ladies about how Nature and Intuition are connected. I hope that their insights give you something to think about and perhaps you are already on their wavelength. BiosKari Stultz is an Artist, Educator, Adventure-seeker and Nature-Lover but feels these are best summed up as a Learner. She is a Teacher by trade and has recently started a journey back to her roots. She also enjoys spending time creating, with her recent focus being on salves, tinctures and tonics. These medicines are created in her kitchen with plants from her garden and from her foraging adventures. Combining these loves with her intuition has been amazing. She lights up just talking about it.Laura Hunter is a connector, advocator, communicator and educator. She loves nature and has always had roots in doing what she can to raise awareness of Mother Nature's need. She is a Diaconal Minister in the United Church and is now the director of Open Sky Cooperative Open Sky Co-opCatriona MacDonald has practiced as a cranial osteopath, healer and animal communicator for 30 years. Helping animals through osteopathy and healing became her passion in 1991.Through encountering a disconnection between humans and the animals in her practice, and the trauma that resulted, she began to uncover and develop a practical methodology for awakening her own kinship with life in its many forms. Sharing these practices with others is the work of her heart and this endeavor is now her entire focus. Catriona guides courses both in animal communication skills, along with nature based courses, awakening our innate ability to sense the lives of others, to know the beauty of all the More-than-Humans that we share this beautiful Earth with and to remember ourselves as “one of the myriad wild ones of this world”. You can connect with her through her website www.re-embracingkinship.co.uk or on Facebook or Instagram re-embracing kinship.
Who doesn't love a good movie? Getting lost in a story or having a good cry, disconnecting from everyday life, just to be entertained. Unfortunately, it doesn't take much to recognize how our entertainment reinforces stereotypes and gender expectations. On this episode, I'm joined by Laura Hunter Drago - Award Winning Film Producer, Member of SAG AFTRA and Women In Media, and Assistant Editor in Chief of Ms. In The Biz. Laura co-founded New Girl Pictures, a production company that's committed to getting women into positions both in front of and behind the camera. Representation does matter and we need women in key roles that will share our stories honestly and with care. I for one am excited to see women with complex, full and imperfect lives. And for the love of God, more women who go to bed without a full set of makeup on...who does that?! It's time we hear the real stories of real women, and I guarantee it will be plenty entertaining. This Is Woman's Work. To learn more about Laura Hunter Drago please visit: laurahunterdrago.com To learn more about what we are up to outside of this podcast, visit us at NicoleKalil.com

Product licensing expert Stephen Key brings back Laura Hunter, the entrepreneur who invented and commercialized a huge hit in the beauty industry called the Lash Liner System, an improved way of applying false lashes using magnetic eyeliner. Stephen asks Laura, what's the right way for someone to contact you with a question? What kinds of questions or style is most likely to prompt a response from you? Stephen wants to know what the right way to ask an expert, in this case a successful entrepreneur, for help and/or advice. Per usual, Laura gives direct, helpful advice. https://www.lashliner.com/ 1. Do your homework. Look first! And then, if you can't find an answer to your question after really trying, reach out. "I have looked everywhere, and I cannot figure out what this thing is...." 2. Be succinct. Be quick. Unsolicited offers should be brief. Laura likes to look at innovative products! But if you send her a book, she'll never read it. Do you click on links? Not a great start! 3. Be respectful. This should go without saying, but it's important. #caregiverstories #caregiver #dementia #thatkimberly In this episode of Caregiver Stories, Kimberly D. Scott a former Video Girl, and now Podcast Practitioner interviews Lauren Hunter. A former Recreation and Physical Therapy Aide and a loving granddaughter to someone who was diagnosed with dementia. Lauren shared her experience and the changes her family went through when her grandmother was diagnosed. It was around 20 years ago when her family started to notice the early signs but it was not until her grandmother moved from Florida to Tennessee when the signs started to intensify. She shared that one of the major declines she will never forget was after her grandparents got into an accident. The trauma from the accident played a huge role because the decline was almost immediate. Though the pace of someone’s decline can be unpredictable, Lauren highlighted the importance of ensuring safety precautionary measures like placing a locator on the car and on the patient’s phone. Leveraging with technology will surely help each member of the family especially the primary caregivers. Listen to the entire conversation for Kimberly and Lauren tackled how important it is to reach out to family and friends or even any group support because during tough situations it's okay to ask for help. The lessons they learned from there experience will be a great reminder for you to start talking about the what-ifs with your family now because tomorrow is promised to no one. Don't forget to share with your family and friends, for you will never know who needs to hear this. Laura Hunter, Author & Co-Founder of Moms on Call, shares her experience of raising 5 children and starting her successful business while her youngest was just 1 week old.
https://www.lashliner.com/ Laura Hunter is the inventor and entrepreneur of the Lash Liner System, a smash hit in the beauty industry, and the world's first patent pending magnetic eyeliner. If you have struggled to attach false eyelashes, struggle no more! The magnetic bond between Laura's eyeliner and false lashes actually gets stronger throughout the day. The Lash Liner System is reusable up to 30 times and the liner lasts a year, giving you anywhere from 30 to 100 uses depending on how often you use it. Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Laura, a former photographer of 25 years who also frequently styled her client's hair and makeup, to learn more about her journey to market. She explains how she tested her initial hypothesis using products she bought from the drugstore. How many prototypes did she make? Hundreds! Laura says, "Do not stop! Do not give up." Laura explains her aha moment of inspiration at Sally's Beauty Supply: "I was so excited to try on the new magnetic lashes. I really wanted to love them. I was so eager to try them that I sat in my car, outside the store and tried them on. They were awful. They slid down, they stuck out on the corners, they jumped around when I tried to connect them and they were so bulky that I could clearly see them in my field of view. I was extremely disappointed. It suddenly struck me that false eyelashes that were attached to magnetic eyeliner would be so much better. But there was no such thing as magnetic eyeliner. I realized that I could probably invent it myself! I immediately went home, started researching and bought everything I thought I needed. After a lot of trial and error and working with different materials and magnets I came up with an amazing and strong product that I'm in love with. I hope you love it as much as I do!" Laura has received lots of awesome press for her invention, including mentions in Good Morning America, Elle, ABC News, Buzzfeed, and more. Stephen and Laura discuss how she struggled to find the right manufacturer, the nuances of the cosmetic industry, her Kickstarter campaign, the speed of copycats and how she deals with them today, how PayPal and Shopify helped her with cash flow for about a six month period when she needed it, and more. Having $100,000 in orders and no product?! Stressful. But Laura flew to China to make it happen. Some of us live near grandma or parents and friends who can give us advice about our kids. For those of us who don’t, who can you ask who has years of experience and the most up-to-date information? You can try calling your pediatrician every few minutes. You can read all the books you can get your hands on. Or you can try Moms on Call. Jennifer Walker and Laura Hunter were on-call nurses for a busy pediatric practice in Atlanta. They realized parents needed help with their questions and they needed fast answers. They found during their in-home visits that parents often had the same concerns — like “why do babies fuss? or “why is my baby crying?” So they made a folder in simple outline form and that was the start of Moms On Call. Now, three books and two apps later — plus a worldwide consulting practice through various digital communications (phone, email, video conferencing)— Moms on Call has become a consultation service for parents who need practical, real-life answers they can put into practice now. Here's my interview with Jennifer Walker.

The November 21st podcast focuses on my day on set shooting the pilot for "Rules for Dudes" produced by Jack Talbert, starring Russ Garwood and Laura Hunter, supported by a huge group of talented actors, writers and crew. * The challenges of production are discussed. * I give props to supporting actors Jason Daniel, Chip Wood, Shanna Olsen, Rene Hamlet, Anna Lee White and more, as well as the crew of Alex on camera, Alex on sound, Zach on PA/AD, Kirsten on PA/AD and too many more to mention. * And even more props to the ever-aweseome Griffen Hadden, who not only works as a co-writer on the script, but in a prominent role.
