Send us a textForget everything you thought you knew about the Chisholm Trail. Join us as historians Gary and Margaret Kraisinger reveal groundbreaking research that challenges the traditional story of this iconic route. Contrary to popular belief, the Chisholm Trail wasn't a singular path from South Texas to Kansas. Instead, it was a vast network of military, stagecoach, and trading roads used by cowboys in the post-Civil War era. We'll shed light on Jesse Chisholm's true legacy, not as a cattle trailblazer but as the creator of a wagon road, using primary sources like archival maps and historic Kansas newspapers. This episode invites us to rethink our understanding of historic cattle drives and encourages a critical re-examination of longstanding narratives. What we found from Garry and Margaret Kraisinger's comments and research invites all of us who cherish the facts behind history to actively participate in rethinking the very nature of the Chisholm Trail and the broader historical context of cattle drives in post-Civil War America. By doing so, we gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities and nuances of this period and the diverse routes that defined it. The vital research being done by the Kraisingers serves as a reminder that history is not static; it is a dynamic narrative that evolves with new discoveries and perspectives, and we, as part of this narrative, have the power to shape it.Support the show

Where does a ghost love to go swimming? The Dead Sea Today we are discussing Fort Reno in El Reno, Oklahoma. The U.S. Government commissioned Fort Reno in 1874, the same year that George Custer's expedition confirmed reports of gold in the Black Hills, and used the fort as a military post until just after World War II. Fort Reno policed and enforced the government's aims for the surrounding area. The historic city of El Reno, Oklahoma lies at the crossroads of Route 66 and the Chisholm Trail, now known as U.S. Highway 81. It has plenty of Historic Landmarks and RT66 attractions and sights plus we hear you may find some famous onion burgers.
From 1867 to 1889, the two most prominent cattle trails in Texas were the Western Trail, also known as the Fort Griffin-Dodge City Trail, and the Eastern Trail, also known as the Chisholm Trail. To confuse matters further, the Chisholm Trail has also been historically referred to as the Abilene, Caldwell, Cattle, Great Texas Cattle, Kansas, and McCoy's Trail. Still, Texas historians acknowledge that the names of these trails do not resonate as loudly within American history or attract as much tourism as Chisholm Trail. The first cattle trail is named after Jesse Chisholm, a Scotch-Cherokee fur trader who forged a route from Wichita, Kansas, to the North Canadian River. To follow the history of the cattle trails, Joseph G. McCoy, a businessman, and entrepreneur, is credited with the extension of the trail as far south as Brownsville, Texas. The Chisholm Trail became popularized in American history through songs, stories, mythical tales, radio, television, and movies. To this day, historians and enthusiasts debate various aspects of the Chisholm Trail's history, especially the route and name. Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show
As we've seen, Brutus is deeply concerned that the proposed Constitution will result in a government that extends its reach into every aspect of Americans lives. And not in a good way. We turn next to Brutus' concerns about the judiciary. He will explain that it's too complicated for a simple everyday man such as himself to completely grasp - because, he reminds us - lawyers make everything over complicated on purpose. He points out that the plain language of the text would eliminate the long standing Sovereign Immunity of the States. Hamilton and Madison will argue - vociferously - that is not the case, that nothing has changed. Meanwhile in South Carolina, an executor for the estate of a man who sold Georgia some much needed supplies during the War, hasn't been paid by Georgia. Mr. Chisholm seemingly has no recourse to recover the unpaid funds... or... will he? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/plausibly-live/message

What are you doing in May? We are discussing some of the fun events happening throughout Oklahoma during the month of May. If you want to find something new to do this month, check out the show. The German-American Society of Tulsa steps up by hosting the annual Germanfest, an authentic German experience you never thought could exist in Oklahoma. Guests are invited to sink their teeth into scrumptious German cuisine, dance happily to upbeat polka music and slam back a couple of German beers, among many other activities. Tulsa is a city on the Arkansas River. It's known for its art deco architecture, mostly in the central Deco District. Landmarks like the Philcade and Philtower buildings reflect a 20th-century construction boom fueled by the prosperous local oil industry. The annual Oklahoma Steam Threshers and Gas Engine Association's show is held in Pawnee, Oklahoma during the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in May. If your interests find themselves leaning you to the way things were done in the past, On the western edge of Pawnee, Oklahoma, atop Blue Hawk Peak sits the Pawnee Bill Ranch Historic Site & Museum, the well-preserved dream home and ranch of Gordon Lillie (a.k.a. Pawnee Bill) and his wife, May Lillie. This picturesque historic site offers a wagon-load of family fun. Each summer, the ranch puts on Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show, an extravaganza in the Wild West show tradition. Other events such as the Oklahoma Steam Threshing & Gas Engine Show and the Pawnee Indian Veterans Powwow keep the town hopping. Downtown Pawnee is replete with century-old native stone buildings, unique shops and outstanding eateries such as Click's Steakhouse. Don't miss the well-appointed Pawnee County Historical Society Museum, with its special area devoted to Pawnee native Chester Gould, creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip. An all-American event, the El Reno Fried Onion Burger Day Festival traces its origins back to Ross Davis, who owned and operated the Hamburger Inn on Route 66 in downtown El Reno. During the Depression, when onions were cheap but meat was expensive, Davis began adding shredded onion to five-cent meat patties in order to make the burgers look bigger. What resulted on the grill of the Hamburger Inn was a hamburger with a tremendous amount of flavor and the birth of a local tradition and delicacy. The historic city of El Reno, Oklahoma lies at the crossroads of Route 66 and the Chisholm Trail, now known as U.S. Highway 81. Ride an authentic rail trolley through the historic downtown area, stop to shop the antique and specialty stores or savor one of El Reno's famous onion burgers. The burgers are so well-known that they've spawned the annual El Reno Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, where the world's largest onion burger is cooked and served to the crowd. Fort Reno is located four miles west of the city and hosts the Tombstone Tales each fall, featuring Buffalo Soldiers, Indian scouts and World War II German prisoners of war sharing their stories. Kick-off the start of summer each May with a trip to the Stilwell Strawberry Festival and enjoy free strawberries and ice cream plus endless family-friendly entertainment. Bid on plump, ripe strawberries harvested from local crops in the annual strawberry auction, see which lucky lady is crowned this year's Strawberry Queen or check out the Strawberry Festival Rodeo for exciting rodeo action. Nothing screams summer quite like biting into a Stilwell strawberry. In 1949, the Oklahoma governor and legislature proclaimed Stilwell as the "Strawberry Capital of the World." Stilwell also serves as a gateway to Lake Tenkiller and Adair Park. Make your way to Claremore for all the excitement of the annual Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo. Rodeo events include bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, mutton bustin' for the kids, rodeo clowns and a dance following the nightly performance. See area cowboys compete in steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and more. Vendors will be on-site to sell Western wear and goods to the crowds. Pick up a cowboy hat and secure a spot in the stands for the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo, an action-packed event you won't want to miss. Rodeo queens will also be on hand to lead the opening ceremonies. Claremore also offers a historic downtown area full of unique shopping and dining experiences, the Belvidere Mansion, Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs and the JM Davis Arms & Historical Museum, among other interesting sites to see and things to do. The Chuck Wagon Festival will include Liichokoshkomo', the Museum's interactive outdoor addition showcasing the diversity of the West with inter-tribal native dwellings, a pioneer village and interactive natural history features. Native American food samples will be available. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City is America's premier institution of Western history, art and culture. Founded in 1955, the Museum collects, preserves and exhibits an internationally renowned collection of Western art and artifacts while sponsoring dynamic educational programs to promote interest in the enduring legacy of the American West. Oklahoma City embodies the Modern Frontier and defines its own future. A young city steeped in Native American and Western culture, openness, and an enterprising nature, OKC embraces its roots and continues to pave the way as a center of innovation and entrepreneurship. #TravelOK #onlyinokshow #Oklahoma #MadeinOklahoma #oklaproud #podcast #okherewego #traveloklahoma #events #May #festival #concert #music #Tulsa #okc #cowboy #german #rodeo #museum #claremore #food #Stilwell #chuckwagon #chickasawcountry #elreno #onionburger #pawnee
Spoken-word introduction followed by an old-time radio cowboy song. Chisholm Trail: Stranger, will you let us paint a picture of a home out in the West? Where the stars shine from the heavens on the scenes that we love best? On the mountains, Hills and valleys, on the Plains, in deserts too, and the moon comes up in glory and casts its beams on you? Were you born to catch the spirit of the nightbird on the wing? Where the freedom of wide spaces and your heart just has to sing? Where the touch of evening breezes blow from out of that boundless blue, like a blessing from the heavens, it reaches out to you. And should you, my weary traveler, chance to pass this way and seeking shelter from the night and rest till break of day. We hope you'll drop into our camp and join without delay. It's the Kingwood Kowboy and his Ranch Hands, and you'll find us charming hosts. We'll give you some sweet music that'll sooth your soul the most. Now, listen as the Ranch Hands sing one of their favorite songs. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/larry-w-jones/support
Before Delano was a part of Wichita - it was the center of lawlessness on the Chisholm Trail. Cowboys would come to bathe nude, participate in drinking and gambling, and get themselves into gun fights. Eventually Wichita couldn't turn a blind eye any longer and incorporated Delano or West Wichita into the city. Delano today is vastly different than it was in cowboy days but it is still a great place to shop and eat and hang out.Follow/Like Us!Website - https://www.wichitapodcast.com/Wichita Podcast Jams - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5-HvQ16Chb5FzfXBeXuOMAFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/WichitaPodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/WichitaPodcastInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wichitapodcast/TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@wichitapodcastEmail - wichitapodcast@gmail.comTheme music by Emily Hahn - @emilyhahnmusic on Instagram. In this episode I am joined by Jaime, Johnny and Hiram (virtually) as we start off talking some UFC fight night. Jaime gives us a run down of the weekend's fights. The Dallas Cowboys pull off a close one against the Football team and the Texas Longhorns land a huge signing at QB. Johnny and I compete at the Donna Chisolm Trail Cookoff over the weekend. We talk about what we did to prep our meats and the addition of the Hector rubs to our Brisket and Ribs. We battle the Valley elements as we struggle to keep our gear from flying away. We manage to cook some good meats regardless of the inclement weather. We share some additional details about the days cook and then it's time for the results. As always even though we are confident in the food we turned in, the nerves kick in as we go to the results stage. We manage to pull off a 1st place chicken in the first category. Then we get to ribs and get another 1st place call. The pork butt was not a winner today but we managed a 4th place call. We pretty much tied up with another cooking team going into brisket and drum roll.......1st place. Good enough for a Grand Champion award. Hiram gets around to cooking a steak. He used Hector's An(g)us rub on the ribeyes that he bought. He gives us a play by play as he cooks one steak on a gas grill in a cast iron and on steak in a pizza oven in a cast iron steak. He has an audience that gives him some up and down reviews. I think he can only get better. We talk about some upcoming remote podcasts we plan to do at GW BBQ and the Chillin and Grillin headquarters. Johnny and Jaime have a debate over why all the celebrity starlets are into Pete Davidson. Jaime has some shocking opinions that he is convinced about. Johnny is just tired of hearing about him and the Kardashians in the news every 5 seconds. Yukon's Christmas in the Park offers a beautiful lighted drive through three interconnecting parks. Yukon's Chisholm Trail, Freedom Trail and city parks make up over 100 acres of Christmas cheer that include over 500 displays and five million lights. Highlights of this beloved holiday event include the 50-ft, multi-colored, lighted Christmas tree, the Santa Express Train ride and an ice skating rink. Start your journey through a magnificent arch that reads “Christmas in the Park” and follow the winding path through three interconnected parks transformed into a winter wonderland. There are three ways to enjoy Christmas in the Park. Motorists from the contiguous 48 states have driven through this wonderland. Twinkling animated displays amuse as you leisurely make your way through, while LED displays synchronized with music wow young and old alike. Guest can get up-close and personal to the lights with a walking tour. The romantic pond area in Chisholm Trail Park is ideal for a winter date. There is even a “Will You Marry Me?” sign for guests who are ready to pop the question. The Christmas in the Park Train Station is the junction of tasty treats, selfie spots and an ice skating rink. For a small fee, the Santa Express takes guests on a tour of the lights that adorn Chisholm Trail Park. Seeing the magnificence of millions of lights over three inter-connected parks, no one would guess that it started out as a handful of displays around the Yukon Community Center. One of the reasons that Christmas in the Park is so special is that every large sponsored display is specifically designed by the sponsor. So, you won't be able to find it anywhere else. If you look closely, each display tells a Christmas-themed story about the person, business or organization that designed it. Christmas in the Park is one of the oldest and most popular traditions in Yukon. Yukon's three lighted parks are great for tour buses or anyone searching for the ultimate holiday experience. Admission to Christmas in the Park is free; however, donations are merrily accepted. https://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.18012/28630 Yukon. In fact, Bob was already so well established by the time of the 1959 Newport Folk Festival that it was he who introduced the crowd to a then-unknown Joan Baez. His songs were recorded by everybody from Peter, Paul and Mary and Simon & Garfunkel to the Byrds and Bob Dylan. Perhaps Gibson's best-known song is “Abilene,” which he wrote with Lester Brown and John D. Loudermilk in the early 1960s. Bob always said he was inspired to write the song after watching cowboy star Randolph Scott's film “Abilene Town,” which was set in Abilene, Kansas, the railhead town at the end of the Chisholm Trail. The Flood's been doing some version of this tune for at least a decade now. Here's the 2021 rendition, with Randy rocking the vocal harmonies, supported by sweet solos from Veezy, Doug and Sam.

Today, I-35 is one of the country's main freight highways, but before it existed, a different path fed America: The Chisholm Trail. 1 out of 4 of the cowboys driving cattle up to Kansas along the Chisholm Trail were Black men, and Texas' history is filled with forgotten stories of the Black cowboys who tamed the Wild West and, later, gained rodeo competition titles across the country. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/35podcast/support

Texas is famous for its cowboy boots and a boot making tradition that has its earliest roots right here in Nocona, Texas, home of the Fenoglio Boot Company. Nocona, Texas Nocona, in the North Texas Hill Country, has a rich deep history based in the cowboy's life from the infamous Chisholm Trail, to the boot companies like Justin and Nocona. To meet the needs of the cowboys driving cattle along The Chisholm Trail, H.J. "Daddy Joe" Justin moved to the banks of the Red River where he founded Justin Boots. Following Daddy Joe's death, the Justin brothers moved the business to The Fort Worth Stockyards. His Daughter, Enid Justin "Miss Enid" stayed in Nocona and founded Nocona Boot Company, in direct competition with her brothers, in efforts to follow her father's wishes and support the small town that had supported her family for so long. Under Miss Enid's direction Nocona Boots became an infamous and respected boot brand in the great state of Texas. In 1990, with the death of Miss Enid, the Justin brothers acquired the Nocona brand. The town facing hard times but with talented specific personnel, the Fenoglio family stepped up. The Fenoglio family, who settled in Nocona in 1886, picked up the reigns and charted a new course in boot making. Holding onto Miss Enid's business model, with modern updates, the Fenoglio Boot Company was founded. Today the Fenoglio Boot Company utilizes the specialized personnel skill set available, some who have been crafting quality boots the time-honored way for over 40 years. Fenoglio Boot Company builds the highest quality truly Texas made boots, living up to their company's motto: "There's Nothing Finer than Fenoglio."

In this episode, Stephen and the team are kicking off a new investigative series at Pioneer Farms, a living history museum and historic site situated along the banks of Walnut Creek in North Austin. The property was once home to an actual pioneer homestead dating back as far as 1844, and prior to that, archeological evidence revealed that a Tonkawa tribe inhabited the area that runs along the creek as well. Now, the many volunteers reenacting the daily pioneer activities on this 90 plus acre farm are wondering if maybe they aren’t the only ones reliving the past on this property. Unlike any of their other cases, Pioneer Farms will prove to be one of the most challenging cases for the Night Owl team, as not only does the site have approximately ten historic buildings and sites on it, but it also sits on nearly one hundred acres of land that once a Tonkawa Native American encampment, and even had part of the famous Chisholm Trail cutting through the property. So get ready listeners, this series will be rich with both history and haunts.

During the first two decades after the Civil War, Texans drove herds north into Kansas and points beyond. In 1867, they began bringing them to Abilene, Kansas on the Chisholm Trail. As the frontier moved west, the railheads shifted to the southern Kansas towns of Newton and Wichita, as well as the western Kansas town of Ellsworth. Later, a branch of the Chisholm Trail, known as the Eastern Trail, forked into Dodge City.
