The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Lubbock County's Bowtie Bully, Curtis Parrish, held a press conference in which he did little but offer deception to the people about what it means to adopt the No New Revenue Rate, meaning no tax increase for next year, by commissioners Rackler and Corley properly using a provision of the law to deny the Bowtie Bully's planed $7.5 million spending increase and accompanying tax increase. He made such incredibly ridiculous claims such as: Not raising taxes will destroy the county's bond rating increasing costs in the future. Never mind that all bond payment spending is in the current budget and will be in the new budget with the No New Revenue Tax Rate. That not adopting his $7.5 million INCREASE in spending will cause them to “make the deepest, most massive cuts in the history of the county.” That my friends is an outright, undebatable lie. The budget with not tax increase will still be larger than that of the current year. That commissioners breaking a quorum, the only way they can prevent a big tax increase given the other three are voting for such, is the same as Democrats breaking the legislative quorum. Another baldfaced lie from the Bowtie Bully. It is against state law to break a legislative quorum but state law specifically allows for blocking a tax increase by two commissioners refusing to show up for the vote. It has been done in Lubbock County before, in Harris County, the state's largest just a few years ago, and who knows where else in our 254 counties. Parrish claims that, somehow, not having a tax increase and increasing spending by $7.5 million this coming year will greatly harm the county for many years to come. Really? Not growing government beyond population, inflation, and economic growth will be a harm? That's a D.C. Democrat idea. Interestingly, after harping on non-existent “cuts,” Sheriff Rowe admitted that a budget with the No New Revenue Tax Rate would still be a big increase in spending over the current budget when he said that he was expecting 8 new deputies with the tax increase but will only get half that amount, 4, without the tax increase. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Texas workforce keeps growing, unemployment at 4.2% for August.Rig count goes up.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: “Voting Deserts,” voter registration rates, turnout, and other nonsense of the Left take up much political coverage and discussion time by people on all sides and do so to the exclusion of something few harping on the matters ever think about: Individual freedom. Most of this is in reaction to a very well written piece by Gromer Jeffers, Jr. at the Dallas Morning (s)News: In ‘voting deserts,' D-FW advocacy groups want to drive more voters to the polls. There is something very elitist, in the most negative sense of the word, about the entire everyone-should-register, everyone-should-vote movement when adherents to such drone on with their speculations as to why other citizens choose not to participate. It is almost always tinged with the idea that the nonvoter would share my enthusiasm for voting, almost presented as something sacred, if it weren't for his ignorance at how to go about it, how to register, or knowing for whom he should vote. Our republic is not well served by ignoring the right of people to not vote; it is not well served by having people vote who don't care enough to educate themselves, and; it is not well served by people voting who are simply manipulated into the polling booth. A representative republic is based on its participants being educated and interested in self-government. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Ongoing federal agency probes in the Rio Grande Valley expose, once again, the problems with so-called “game rooms” in Texas. So, what top officials in Lubbock County, or your city or county, are on the take, if any, from game room operators? In Lubbock County citizens were promised an ordinance to add transparency to who owns and operates these game rooms by September; it's now November. Add to that the District Attorney's office, the sheriff, County Judge Curtis Parrish, and others were astonishingly negative toward enacting the ordinance offered up by Commissioner, Precinct 2, Jason Corley in the spring of this year, and an informed and reasonable person would naturally wonder if any of them are on the take from these establishments. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.More Border B.S. – Operation Lone Star officers modify tactics as border surge continues. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Pornographers (Houston Chronicle calls them “adult entertainment” advocates) sue Texas to fight against HB 1181 which requires age verification to enter the online pornography websites. Additionally, in an absurd assertion, the pornographers claim that pornography is not addictive and want the provisions of the bill that require a warning of such to be ruled unconstitutional. I guess we know where the plaintiffs in this case stand: They appear to want children and youth to have access to their pornography. Many have said that the judiciary often trails the private sector in its use of technology. Courts have been attempting to close this gap but need the help of the technology sector to succeed. David Slayton and Jeff Aresty will discuss how the technology sector can get involved and what plans they have for hacking for justice in Texas. In May of 2012, David W. Slayton began serving in his current position as the Admin. Dir. for the TX Office of Court Administration. He has been employed by the judicial branch in various roles for over 15 years. He has published an article entitled “An Analysis of the Effective Use of Jurors in Lubbock County” and was instrumental in the publication of the 2007 version of the Nat. Assoc. for Court Management’s Model Code of Conduct. He currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Nat. Assoc. for Court Management’s Board and was formerly the Secretary on the Board of Dir. for the TX Asso. for Drug Court Professionals. Jeffrey M. Aresty, Esq. is a Massachusetts lawyer based in Houston, TX and has been involved in international business law and the role of technology in the transformation of the practice of law for almost three decades. Mr. Aresty is the founder and current President of Internet Bar Organization. Among Mr. Aresty’s accomplishments are initiating and directing the “ Computer College” program (1983-1987). He co-edited two books on cross cultural influence in Int.business and e-commerce for the ABA, including “The ABA Guide to International Business Negotiations”.
