In a special series of a few podcasts under the theme of 'What's the point'? Marcus talks with Brendan Perring, General Manager and Chairman of IPIA and BAPC about industry issues, ideas, opinions and musings. In the first instalment, they discuss the point of Events, and why formats are changing...More about Brendan PerringStarting out in the heroic world of student journalism, Brendan moved on to becoming a freelance reporter in the bonny land of Scotland. After graduating from Edinburgh University with an MA (Hons) in English Literature and History, he worked as an investigative reporter for the Sunday Times of Scotland. Following this experience he moved to Wales and attained a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from Cardiff University and carried out freelance work for a number of regional newspapers. Brendan's next move took him into the printing world as Editor at Signlink magazine and Deputy Editor of Print Monthly magazine. After two years he was promoted to Editor of Print Monthly and then this was shortly followed by becoming Managing Editor of Link Publishing, which owns these national print titles. Link Publishing is a multi-media business-to-business publisher, the platforms of which focus on in-depth technical, business and investigative news in their respective sectors. As part of his role he also developed and managed its online presence, social media presence, and multi-channel marketing strategy. After helping to found Link Exhibitions, and with the successful launch of The Print Show, which took place for the first time in October 2015, Brendan was made director of Link Publishing and Link Exhibitions. Key responsibilities included managing its PR and marketing content and strategy, in addition to business development and creating its visitor attractions. Seeking a fresh challenge after gaining this experience and finding he loved PR and creative project development, he moved to Speed Communications (The Mission Marketing Group) looking after four clients in the insurance, marketing, outsourcing and exhibition sectors. With an opportunity then presenting itself from the IPIA to return to print and take up its newly created position of General Manager, Brendan jumped at the chance to use his accumulated experience and skills to support its members to grow and thrive through mutual cooperation. Listen on:Apple PodcastGoogle PodcastSpotifyWhat is FuturePrint? In this episode of "Keen On", Andrew talks with anthropologist James Suzman about his new book, Work: A Deep History, From the Stone Age to the Age of Robots. With a head full of Laurens van der Post and half an anthropology degree from St Andrews University under his belt, James Suzman hitched a ride into Botswana’s eastern Kalahari in June 1991. He has been working with the Bushmen ever since. He remains involved in a number of Kalahari initiatives through the Cambridge based research and support organisation he heads, Anthropos. James is an anthropologist and the author of Affluence Without Abundance: The disappearing world of the Bushmen published by Bloomsbury in 2017. He is the nephew of Janet Suzman and great-nephew of Helen Suzman. Suzman was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and educated at Michaelhouse. He graduated with an MA (Hons) in social anthropology from the University of St Andrews in 1993. He was awarded a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Edinburgh in 1996. Suzman was the first social anthropologist to work in Namibia's eastern Omaheke among "Southern Ju/'hoansi", where he exposed the brutal marginalisation of San people who had lost their lands to white cattle ranchers and pastoralist Herero people. In 1998 Suzman was appointed to lead the landmark study, "The Regional Assessment of the Status of the San in Southern Africa", based on an ACP/EU resolution. Suzman later led an assessment by Minority Rights Group International to assess how Namibia's ethnic minorities had fared in the first ten years of Namibian Independence. The subsequent report was published in 2002. Emerging during period of political upheaval in Namibia, it led to calls for the better protection of ethnic minorities in Namibia. The Namibian Government rejected the report's findings and the President, Sam Nujoma, accused Suzman of amplifying "ethnic tensions". In 2001, Suzman was awarded the Smuts Commonwealth Fellowship in African Studies at the University of Cambridge. Suzman later established a program to establish opportunities for Hai//om San to benefit from tourism revenues in Etosha National Park. He was also involved in the dispute that arose as a result of the illegal relocation of Gwi and Gana San from Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve. He was highly critical of the Botswana Government's actions and, later, Survival International's campaign, which he claimed undermined ongoing negotiations between the Botswana Government and a coalition of organisations supporting the evicted San. Survival International, in turn, criticised Suzman and members of the negotiating team led by Ditshwanelo, The Botswana Centre for Human Rights of complicity with the Botswana Government. In 2007, Suzman joined De Beers, where, as global head of public affairs, he developed the company's award-winning sustainability functions. He resigned in 2013. In 2013 Suzman and Jimmy Wales teamed up with Lily Cole to launch Impossible.com at the Cambridge Union.[citation needed] In the same year he was invited to deliver the second Protimos Lecture at the Parliament Chamber of London's Inner Temple. Suzman has published widely on San and other issues in academic journals, magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times. In 2017 he published Affluence Without Abundance: The Disappearing World of the Bushmen. Work: A History of How We Spend Our Time, was published in September 2020. Learn more about your ad choices. Colleen's Full Bio: Colleen Kerr is Vice President for External Affairs and Government Relations and Chief Legislative Officer for Washington State University (WSU) and founder and co-owner of Sweetgrass Food Co. in Seattle.   In her position at WSU, Colleen serves on the senior administrative team for Washington State’s land-grant university, reporting directly to the President. She currently serves as the co-chair of WSU’s Economic Development Council, where she is leading the efforts around the Seattle Initiative, dedicated to connecting WSU’s research, academic and service mission to the greater Seattle region. She also sits on the Executive Committee of the Seattle Chamber and the Executive Roundtable for the Washington Global Health Alliance.   Colleen serves as an institutional leader in defining external strategic priorities and conducting outreach with multiple stakeholders from the public and private sectors. Her office had the leadership role in securing legislation that launched the WSU Everett campus, in securing the federal designation and funding for the Center of Excellence designation of ASCENT, the launch of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, the second publicly funded medical school in Washington.   Colleen brings a wealth of experience to WSU and her role in advancing the public policy benefits of WSU’s extensive research and educational programs. Following a human rights fellowship with Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland, she worked on the Bloody Sunday Inquiry for Madden and Finucane Solicitors, one of the premier legal firms in the European Union and located in Belfast. After coming back to the U.S., she was an attorney with Preston Gates and Ellis, LLP in Seattle and then was a special assistant on government accountability for the state’s Office of Economic Development in the Washington State Department of Commerce. She served as legislative director for State Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown and deputy chief of staff for the Senate Democratic Caucus in Washington State. Previous work for the legislature includes being tribal counsel for the Washington State House of Representatives.   In 2015 with her husband and best friend, she opened Sweetgrass Food Co. restaurant, which serves 100% Good Food in an intentionally designed space in downtown Seattle. Sweetgrass focuses on a premier cafe experience, catering, and offers a "creative space" for the neighborhood. Reflecting the owners' values, it participates in the local food economy by prioritizing organic, local producers and paying a living wage. The menu highlights "real" food and defaults to plant-based, inviting guests to make additions or changes to suits their tastes or dietary needs—making nutritionally dense food delicious, accessible, and even chic. Indeed, the food genre—from Buddha bowls and soaked oats to matcha lattes and celery juice—is most aptly categorized as "hippie-chic".   Colleen holds a JD degree from the University of Washington, an AM in Public Policy from the University of Chicago and a MA Hons in Modern History and a MLitt in International Security Studies, earned with distinction, from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.   In her spare time (?!?), Colleen is outdoors as many days as she can with Mike and Trixie and Molly, travels extensively at home and abroad, is a 20 year student of yoga, is an avid reader, baker, and a burgeoning astrologist.   Connect with Colleen and Sweetgrass Food Co.: Sweetgrass' website: www.sweetgrassfoodco.com  Sweetgrass' Instagram: www.instagram.com/sweetgrassfoodco Colleen's Instagram: www.instagram.com/colleenaelizabeth   Connect with Sara and Women Who Went for It: Facebook: www.facebook.com/womenwhowentforit  Website: www.womenwhowentforit.com  Nominate a Podcast Guest: www.saramcardle.com/podcast-guest  Email: womenwhowentforit@gmail.com  Phone: 503.893.2043   Want to make your own career change? Invest in weapons manufacturers, don't forget to read the prospectus on the tobacco company, think about how you can make money out of war - whilst 'sin stocks' may have been 'in' stocks back in the day, investors are now voting with their dollars. Bannerman is a 'Creative Change Agent' who "combines Creativity with Psychology to help businesses innovate". His most recent books are "r" and "". Kindly note: In the US, the first of these two books is published as ' Bannerman says that the books aren't going to turn you into a genius, but he says you already knew that. What it will do, he maintains, is increase the number of genius moments in your life. You know, those amazing times when you cleverly solve a problem that others have been struggling with, or come up with a brilliant idea that makes the ordinary extraordinary. We could all do with a touch more inner genius: The ability to see what others miss. The ability to shape an ingeniously persuasive argument. The ability to create, adapt, adjust, rethink, tweak, and polish. This is the stuff upon which amazing careers and great businesses are built. And while we can’t all be the next Einstein, Shakespeare, or Steve Jobs, we can all develop and hone our genius thinking skills. His combined work just might enable you, the reader, to: Solve problems and dissolve obstacles Spot opportunities that others miss Win arguments with persuasive lines Turn the distinctly average into something truly special Those who think creatively are given a massive advantage, he argues, —in the workplace and at home—and everyone can do it, with a bit of help. As an innovation consultant Bannerman has worked with many leading organisations including Aston Martin, British Airways, Orange, Starbucks, Rolls-Royce and HSBC, as well as at the National Space Centre on a mission to Mars. He also lectures on business creativity and innovation on the MBA programmes at Warwick Business School, Grenoble Ecole de Management, and Oxford Brookes University, where he is currently doing a PhD on the impact of lateral thinking upon organizational advantage. Before working in business he was a platinum-selling songwriter, a freelance cartoonist (eg. When your marketing team is focusing on the channels rather than the primary asset, the content, you loose the ability to understand the quality of your leads coming from your site. You don't know what they have seen, where you think they are going, and why they are where they are. Being able to have a ledger of content consumption habits of this user and comparing that to where you want them to go and what others have found valuable, you really start to be able to drive customer journeys. In this podcast, Nick Edouard discusses the need for triggering content assets that are part of a journey to drive the bingeing habits of site visitors for greater engagement and giving them more control over the journey. We also answer the following questions:Why is Content Marketing software needed?Where does the Content Management System fit in?How do we bring content together that is spread throughout the web?Not all Content Marketing software is the same. If you buy a CMS, CRM, or Marketing Automation platform, there is a particular set of problems each is tasked to complete to be in that category, but that is not so in Content Marketing software. Near the end, we get into a topic that is near and dear to my heart, the interoperability of MarTech vendors and the need for a Knight's Round Table conference for beginning the conversation about how we can work together in harmony for the health of the stack and customers, rather than be in an arm's race and be competing with companies that we should not actually be competing with.Full Show: https://enterprisemarketer.com/podcasts/enterprise-marketer-podcast-conference/65-nick-edouard/Biography:Nick Edouard is Co-Founder, President, and CMO of LookBookHQ.
