The presence of lead in cinnamon has recently emerged as a significant food safety concern. This toxic element, when consumed in large amounts, can lead to serious health issues, including neurological damage and developmental delays in children. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the discovery of elevated lead levels in cinnamon products, which has prompted a closer look at food safety practices and regulations. Cinnamon can become contaminated with lead through various pathways. One primary source is the processing of cinnamon, including drying, grinding and packaging, which can introduce lead if the equipment or materials are contaminated. Water used in irrigation can also be a source of lead, especially in areas with old, corroding pipes. In response to the alarming findings of lead in cinnamon, there have been several recalls of cinnamon products in the last few months alone. The team discusses the differences between lead poisoning and foodborne illness, the former of which can take decades to discover whereas the latter is almost immediate. Also in this episode, Sydney talks about Kaiser Permanente's new Food Is Medicine Center of Excellence. This initiative seeks to blend the organization's comprehensive care model with evidence-based food and nutrition interventions, thereby addressing nutrition security and diet-related diseases, which are a leading cause of death in the US among adults. The centre is rooted in a comprehensive framework inspired by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), blending clinical services, research, education and community engagement. This allows for a holistic approach to tackling diet-related health issues. Notably, the center's ambition to shape the future of food as medicine within healthcare is a testament to its innovative approach. Kaiser Permanente's vision is to ensure members can access, afford and consume nutritious foods, not just in times of need but as a continuous lifestyle. The team talks about the crucial differences between medicine and food but praise the center for its comprehensive approach to nutrition. You might think, this is no big deal, the kids are home all summer long while we are farming and we deal with that every year. However, having them home during planting season is something new, and during a time of the year when we are so busy, sleep deprived and stressed out it can make us overlook things that we might otherwise pay attention to. The issues of kids being home and a myriad of other things that we may never give any thought to are what we are going to address on this bonus episode of the Off-Farm Income Podcast. I will have Dr. Casper Bendixsen from the National Farm Medicine Center back on the show to discuss some of the things to look out for. We will also talk about resources that are out there for folks wanting to know how to deal with this on the farm. Here is to hoping we get back to normal really soon. SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS: As prospective farmers and ranchers, you are seeking to be involved in one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. And, if you are already engaged in this pursuit, then you are already exposed. The fact that farming involves risk, and requires skill to remain safe is one of the things that I like about it. I like the fact that you need to think and that you cannot be protected by a shell of bubble wrap while you are working. This is what makes it special - not everyone can do this. With that said, I also believe in mitigating risks and remaining as safe as possible. Farming and ranching is an unbelievably rewarding profession, and we don't want to mar that experience with tragedy, financial devastation or a loss of the lifestyle due to an accident or illness. Even when we do mitigate the risks that are associated with farming and ranching, it does not eliminate potential injury or even death. And if one of those moments were arrive on your farm, you would be calling for help, most likely from your neighbors on the volunteer fire department. You know your farm. They do not. So, when something is going wrong and they are coming to help they could be walking into dangers that they do not know exist. This could be anything from trying to bring a heavy truck over a bridge that cannot support the load to entering a building with dangerous gases present inside that are unknown to the first responders. Today I get to speak with Casper Bendixsen, the director of the National Farm Medicine Center. He is going to talk a lot about RF-DASH or Rural Firefighters Delivering Agricultural Safety And Health. This is all about having first responders in rural communities train farmers about occupational safety. Casper will also be discussing some of the statistics and risks associated with farming and how people like him are working to mitigate these risks for the benefit of everyone in agriculture. Neural Implant podcast - the people behind Brain-Machine Interface revolutions
Jack Judy is the director of Nanoscience Institute for Medical and Engineering Technologies at the University of Florida He serves to bridge the divide between engineering, medicine, and the sciences through the work he does with neurotechnologies and neural implants. He has focused on peripheral nerve interfaces and how stimulating these could help amputees in the Wounded Warrior Project. He has worked with DARPA for several years where he has revolutionized biotechnology and biomedicine to confront issues many in the field were ignoring. Top Three Takeaways: 1. Biomedicine and biotechnology provide an avenue for innovation in the future of neural implants that could provide alternative forms of treatment for certain treatments. 2. Many issue concerning neural implants are not being discussed openly which thwarts improvement in much for the field. 3. The field of biotechnologies and biomedicine has potential but very strong challenges that include funding, research, and over excitement without delivery. Show Notes [0:00] Jack Judy Introduces himself [2:50] Ladan asks about the approaches Judy and his colleagues are taking in building physical objects that will work with neural tissue. [6:30] Judy explains how higher channel counts in neural implants could compromise good electrical connection. [11:30] Judy explains how he got involved in the field of neurotechnology through DARPA. [16:00] Judy explains the problems he perceives in neurotechnology. [22:30] Judy explains how he worked with DARPA to serve the nation and assist the defense. [26:00] Judy explains how DARPA chose to shed a light on the reliability issues neurotechnology has. [29:05] The hype cycle concerning MEMS technology is discussed; the relationship between the hype cycle of neural implants is also explained. [37:00] Judy acknowledges the excitement in the field of biomedicine, but he advocates for research and funding. [43:00] Judy explains how the field does face obstacles but the strong engineering school and strong medical school in close proximity at the University of Florida provides a good environment for progression.

Available for over 25 years, the ALCAT Test identifies cellular reactions to over 350 foods, chemicals and herbs. These inflammatory reactions are linked to chronic health problems like obesity and diabetes, as well as skin, heart, joint, and digestive disorders. Dr. Karen Kan will interview Dr. BlyWeiss about how this test works and who should get one. Dr. Blyweiss began his medical career as a clinical pharmacist in South Florida prior to earning his medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine in 1982. This dual background allowed him to appreciate the relevance of conventional pharmaceutical/surgical based treatments in acute medical conditions, but also to recognize where these approaches fell short in treating the majority of patients who suffered from the chronic degenerative diseases of "western civilization origin". Dr. Blyweiss became an early adherent and experienced practitioner of what would become known as "functional medicine". Dr. Blyweiss has used this matrix of systems biology to effectively manage and alleviate the symptoms related to the most "difficult-to-treat" conditions by addressing the underlying causes, allowing the body to heal itself. He is adjunct faculty at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Center for integrative medicine helping to train both future and practicing physicians in “ functional medicine”. He is both a local authority and national speaker on functional medicine. He is currently in private practice in South Florida where he resides with his family.
