On this episode Jeff interviews Rasmus Hougaard, the founder and CEO of Potential Project and the author of "Compassionate Leadership, How to Do Hard Things in a Human Way." Jeff and Rasmus explore how leaders can expect top performance while also being compassionate. They discuss important differences between compassion and empathy, and Rasmus shares some examples of exceptional leaders who are also compassionate. He discusses how mindfulness can be used at work to help prevent burnout. Rasmus talks about his extensive research on the difference between female and male (identifying) leaders, and what that research says about who is the better leader, and how gender is not a limiting factor. Rasmus guides listeners through a short yet powerful mindfulness exercise to reconnect with the present.
How is compassionate leadership different from empathetic leadership? Difficult workplace conversations require a mindful touch, and while wisdom without compassion can be ruthless, compassion without wisdom is naive. In this episode, Karen and Lachy are in conversation with Jenny Steadman about the role of compassion in being a leader, and how this intersects with wisdom. Jenny Steadman is the Acting National Director for Potential Project, a global leadership training, consulting and research firm. She is also a highly qualified mindfulness trainer and corporate facilitator.
If you struggle to have difficult conversations then you aren't alone. According to Rasmus Hougaard, founder and CEO of global research, leadership development and consulting firm, Potential Project, only one in 100 of us are naturally wired to be able to give difficult feedback the right way, instinctively. “You really have to step up if you want to lead people and learn how to do the hard things. Because it's the most compassionate and kind thing you can do. Everything else is indecent, period.”Rasmus and the team at Potential Project have spent the last three years undertaking a huge research project to find out just how CEOs and leaders do hard stuff with humanity. In this episode, Rasmus shares why he learned the art of mindfulness in Buddhist monasteries not just as a way of driving employee wellness, but actually driving leadership behaviours. He also explains why, if we care deeply about people, it's on us to be direct and to give them the feedback they need to grow to be the best version of themselves that they can be. To find out more about the four behaviours Rasmus and the team uncovered, to create more trust, psychological safety, and improve performance in your individual employees, your teams, and the culture, download and listen to this episode. Jacqueline Carter is a partner and North American Director for Potential Project, and the co-author of Compassionate Leader: How to do Hard Things in a Human Way. Highlights: “Not only is it possible to do hard things in a human way, but when we do…our people thrive.” [9:50] Jacqueline Carter dives into the data behind her new book Compassionate Leader, delighted to find this human way of doing the hard things that solves the leadership challenge of better well-being and better performance. “How does being rated high on compassion help with our stress and anxiety levels, which are off the charts?” [10:55] Marcel, taking note of the rising stress levels post pandemic, asks Jacqueline how compassionate leadership changes that…interestingly enough, it benefits both the leader and the staff. “There are many leaders that are smart…being smart means you have the answer to the question; being wise is knowing when not to give the answer to the question.” [13:40] Not only is compassion important but Jacqueline drives home the point of the importance of wisdom in that equation. A wise leader can bring together the greatest potential of the team. “Empathy can lead to empathetic burnout; we can care SO much that we can get stuck and then we can't do anything.” [21:20] Don't let empathy hijack your brain. Jacqueline encourages leaders to ask the question, how can I be of benefit…to drive and influence their ability to lead with compassion. “Compassionate action can be no action, so long as it is done with wisdom.” [23:31] Leading with compassion can sometimes mean taking a step back. Jacqueline explains the need for space in decisions and actions…at times doing nothing at all. “Before we lead others with compassion, we must first learn to lead ourselves with compassion.” [23:45] Marcel quotes Jacqueline's principle of ‘Oxygen Mask First': a critical point for leaders to meet their needs and take care of themselves first so they can then be of service to others. “Busyness does not equal productivity” [25:30] Jacqueline's tip for leaders is to stop wearing busyness as a badge of honor and instead pause and approach tasks with a calmness and understanding of what is possible and reasonable to do. “Wouldn't it be amazing if as a culture, we valued our downtime as a restorative opportunity for us to be able to show up as a better version of ourselves.” [28:00] What does it mean to appreciate the "busylessness"? Jacqueline encourages an emphasis on creating space in your life and mind for actual downtime, where you are present as an individual. “It takes an immense amount of courage to see vulnerability as a leadership strength and not as a weakness.” [32:45] Marcel comments on the principle of ‘Courage over Comfort' in which Jacqueline explains the hard stuff, that requires courage and uncomfortability where leaders should embrace the fear and tame it. “We can both be hard and human. We can focus on results and care. Not only is that better for ourselves, for our people, but also for our business.” [36:55] Rounding out the discussion on the 6 principles, Jacqueline parts with what she hopes listeners and readers will take away from her book, Compassionate Leader. He received a Master's degree in Organization and Behavior Studies from Roskilde University.Key Insights:Rasmus Hougaard is on a mission to create a more human world of work.Behind the Why. While working for a large corporation, Rasmus realized that many of his coworkers were burned out, drained of creativity, and not living up to their potential. Armed with meditation and other practices he learned from Buddhist traditions, Rasmus set out to found the Potential Project and change the working world. (1:02)Rethinking the Great Resignation. An unprecedented number of employees are quitting, or considering quitting. Rasmus reframes this as an opportunity for leaders to be compassionate to their existing employees, and a chance to attract new talent. (19:32) Get Enough Sleep. Get enough sleep and make time for yourself. Self-compassion is fundamental to resiliency. Before you can take care of others, and the world, you need to take care of yourself. The idea of a leader single-handedly saving a company is outdated. Rasmus shares that leadership today is about motivating teams of people behind a shared vision. Leadership is through influence and communication, rather than commands and mandates. (14:05)Wise Compassion. Rasmus' research found that the most effective leaders combined a caring attitude with business acumen and the courage to do difficult things. Good leaders can do hard things in a human way. (19:38)Relearning Being Human. Leadership in the 21st century is about unlearning management and relearning being human. Leaders should enter conversations with vulnerability and honesty. They should put aside traditional prescriptions for leadership, and rather focus on the individual, unique employee in front of them. There's An Uplifting Movement To Teach CEOs And Executives To Empathetically Treat Workers Humanely After nearly two years of enduring a brutal pandemic, we're having to cope with Omicron surging. Despite the overhang of gloom, we see people striving to make this world a better place. Pre-pandemic it was a standard and accepted practice to have dictatorial CEOs, executives and middle managers rule with an iron fist without any concerns about the mental health and wellbeing of their workers. The virus outbreak has made many leaders rethink the way they manage their staff. In a war-for-talent and Great Resignation era, they finally realized it's imperative to display empathy and enact employee-centric policies and procedures to empower their workforce. From a practical standpoint, taking great care of workers is one of the best ways to attract, recruit and retain people. A leader in this new humanistic approach towards managing people is the Potential Project. The global organization has a bold mission to vastly improve the lives of workers by training and teaching leadership how to effectively and humanely run their companies. The Potential Project, a Danish based consulting firm, has a global roster of top companies advises an impressive roste of corporate clients including Cisco, IKEA, Microsoft, Unilever, Pfizer, Disney and Accenture. The organization educates C-suite executives to keep employees feeling happy and engaged. Potential Project calls for a modern day model for leadership, focused on making work more “human-centric” by prioritizing compassion and reducing busyness and creating a more human work world. Jacqueline Carter, is the director of North America at Potential Project and author of the forthcoming book “Compassionate Leadership: How to do Hard Things in a Human Way.” She is involved with leadership development, change management, consulting, and research along with her colleagues around the world. The management consulting firm has helped over 550,000 individuals at more than 600 clients to adopt new ways of working and leading. Potential Project delivers solutions globally in 28 countries in 17 languages, in-person and digitally. Carter points to Satya Nadella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, and CHRO Kathleen Hogan as examples of progressive leadership. She says that the tech giant exemplifies what new leadership really looks like—the ability to combine a drive for high performance with a drive for high care for employees. In an interview on Yahoo news, Carter said about Nadella, I think he's humble and he's really committed to being able to support the development of people. She highlights that the tech CEO possesses two attributes that are the cornerstone of leadership. The first is having a growth mindset. This mindset means you are willing to let go of things that don't work and switch gears to try different ways of innovating. Nadella's leadership is built upon his focus on empathy. He has the ability to see, feel and connect with others. He infused these two principles into the culture of Microsoft. Carter says that this is what employees today are looking for. They want leaders to be able to make sure that they can make the tough decisions, drive the results, and also create an environment of flexibility, where workers feel cared for, connected and have a sense of belonging, meaning and purpose. One of the ways to do this is by offering daily pulse checks to determine how the staff is feeling. It's just a simple question to all of their employees worldwide and to be able to find out, how are we doing today?

In her work, she saw teams come together in extraordinary ways, but she also shares findings from a UK study that has been replicated elsewhere, that show how we often see ourselves as having compassion, but not our neighbours. In her discussion with Pia and Dan, Gillian explores the differences between empathy and compassion, and the importance of self-compassion to resilience.Links Humankind: A Hopeful History, by Rutger Bregman Perceptions Matter: The Common Cause UK Values Survey Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself, by Dr. Kristin Neff Squadify
After finishing college, Grattan went to Australia for a year and returned home 12 years later. He lived and worked in Taiwan for 8 years, where he studied Chinese, taught English and eventually set up his own business. He also travelled extensively in South East Asia; often for months at a time.Returning to Ireland in 1998 he bought a training franchise, specialising in leadership and management development. Qualifying as an Executive & Business Coach in 2006 was a natural progression. Coaching also re-ignited his passion for learning, which was all but extinguished by his 17 years in the formal education system. In 2007 he attended his first coaching event, a talk by Sir John Whitmore, one of the founding fathers of coaching. Sir John articulated three ‘provocations':• Consumerism (more and more) is not compatible with sustainability (less)• Quantitative technical advance is way ahead of Qualitative wisdom (our technical capability is way beyond our wisdom in how to use that technology• Hierarchy is in decay and must be replaced by self-responsibilityHearing these provocations articulated with such clarity, lit a spark in Grattan which still burns to this day.In 2010 after suffering burnout, mindfulness found him. Recognising how beneficial mindfulness was for him personally, he joined Potential Project. With these global leaders in corporate mindfulness, over the next 6 years he trained mindfulness to thousands of people in organisations.Grattan believes we all know there are better ways we could be living and working. Better for our wellbeing. For our loved ones. Our organisations. Our communities. Our planet. If only we weren't too busy to explore them.He invites his clients to step back from the ‘busyness' of their lives and identify what is truly important. He is most interested to work with people who want to be the best FOR the world. People who want to step into their power, and work with the biggest challenges facing humanity - the climate, biodiversity and environmental crises. People who want to contribute to a better world; not just for humanity but also for the more-than-human world. As a Regenerative Leadership Coach, he supports clients to do their own inner transformational work first. Have you ever wanted to call your manager and say “I cannot take this job one day longer”? Well, Andy Lee did just that and changed his life. What happened to him after he made that call? Take a listen, as Andy shares his very personal and vulnerable story with us. He tells us that he was in denial and pretending everything was fine, when it wasn't. He took time off after that phone call and took a journey which included a month-long stay at a Buddhist Monastery. After his leaving his job, he made his decision to teach people mindfulness and help others work to avoid the situations that impacted him. His top advice: Listen to your quiet voice. You don't want to miss his courageous story and how he teaches mindfulness to others.Andy Lee has dedicated his career to helping leaders, teams and organizations leverage the power of mindfulness to create a culture of engagement, innovation and sustainable success. He has been teaching mindfulness in organizations since 2011. He is the founder of Mindful Ethos, and Senior Consultant with Potential Project. Before founding Mindful Ethos, Andy was Chief Mindfulness Officer at Aetna where he and his team developed a range of programs to create a deeply rooted culture of mindfulness. These programs included in-person courses, webinars and digital programs. He also developed a network of internal mindfulness advocates and created a Mindfulness Center in Aetna's home office.Previously, Andy held senior talent management roles at Merrill Lynch, Viacom, and Capital One. In these roles, he developed and managed a range of traditional talent management programs and processes including competency models, leadership development programs and performance management processes and survey feedback programs. Marcel’s guest on this week’s Love In Action show is Jacqueline Carter. Jacqueline is the international partner and the North American director for Potential Project. She has over 20 years of experience working with organizations around the globe, including Cisco, Marriott and Google, to improve performance. She is also the co-author along with Rasmus Hougaard, of the exciting new book, The Mind of a Leader: How to Lead Yourself, Your People and Your Organization For Extraordinary Results. The book is based on extensive research, including assessments of more than 35,000 leaders, and reveals how leaders can disrupt how they lead by training their brains. Most leaders are overwhelmed and overworked. Jacqueline calls it a leadership crisis. She says that it’s tough to be a leader today and it’s not getting easier. [4:30] Her research gave three major insights: The workplace has dramatically changed - people are looking for meaning, purpose and happiness in their jobs. Creating an environment where people feel happy is a big task for leaders, and most feel ill-equipped to do it. [5:41] Leadership is an inner game - it starts with understanding, managing and leading your own mind before you can lead others. [6:30] Mindfulness, selflessness and compassion are the three core qualities that make great leaders. [6:43] We’re most stressed first thing in the morning because of cortisol spikes, so it’s the most important time to do mind training practices which will help settle the mind and give us more clarity. [8:17] If you don’t set an intention, your day will just happen. [9:00] Because of its neuroplasticity, we can change the way our brain looks and functions. [9:52] Mindfulness is the ability to be present in the moment, to be focused on the task at hand and aware of what’s going on around us. Our mind has a natural tendency to wander, and research shows that our attention span is getting smaller over time. However, attention matters in business. Mindfulness training helps to train the attentional muscles so we can be more focused and more effective. [13:33] Marcel asks Jacqueline how to practice mindfulness. She shares a simple A-B-C-D technique and invites listeners to join in. [16:25] The main reason meetings are not as effective as they can be, Jacqueline says, is because people are not paying attention, their minds are wandering. She shares how practicing mindfulness helped one organization decrease their meeting time by 35% and become more efficient. [22:47] Marcel asks what to do with our devices so we can be more mindful. Jacqueline comments that even the mere presence of a smartphone during a conversation negatively impacts our ability to feel connected with each other. She shares some practical tips to help us get the best of technology without letting it get the best of us. [28:10] Selflessness is not allowing our natural egoistic tendencies to get in the way of being a good leader. We naturally see the world from our own point of view. Selflessness asks us to be more intentional about others and their needs and how we can best be of service. The foundation of selflessness is bringing more humility and gratitude into our leadership. [30:35] Empathy is when we feel with someone. Compassion is more focused on how we can make their life easier. If as a leader, you can help to alleviate some of the unnecessary stress and pressure your workers face, you will be able to create a kinder and more effective workplace. [35:23] Jacqueline appeals to listeners to put your own oxygen mask on first. You can’t take care of other people if you’re not taking good care of yourself. Her research has proven that the most successful leaders are disciplined about taking care of themselves. [41:14] Resources PotentialProject.com Email: jacqueline.carter@potentialproject.com

Elizabeth has taught mindfulness in many settings and is passionate about using it to cultivate business environments where individuals can thrive and perform at their very best. In addition, she teaches mindfulness to individuals and coaches those who are struggling to find meaning and purpose in their lives while looking for support along the way. Elizabeth’s areas of expertise include managed care provider services operations, fast-paced and rapidly growing organizations, training, customer service, healthcare consulting, non-profit program management and travel management. Elizabeth’s “Mindfulness at Work” programs integrate her deep mindfulness practice and business acumen to ensure sustainable results for clients. As a Senior Consultant and Trainer with the Potential Project (a global leader in corporate-based mindfulness programs), Elizabeth brings her expertise to organizations looking for improved performance and culture change. Elizabeth divides her time between working and immersing herself into mindfulness and meditation through learning and extended retreats. She engaged in a three-year silent meditation retreat in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, which was a transformative experience. During that retreat, it became clear to her that she should share the benefits of mindfulness and meditation with others—especially in the work environment. This week we chat with Marissa Afton, client solutions director at Potential Project. A mindfulness practitioner for the past 25 years, she shares one easy way to instantly become more mindful at work and other tips for bringing more mindfulness to performance discussions.
Researchers have found that the accelerated pace of modern office life is taking its toll on productivity, employee engagement, creativity and well-being. Faced with a relentless flood of information and distractions, our brains try to process everything at once increasing our stress, decreasing our effectiveness and negatively impacting our performance. Ironically, we have become too overworked, unfocused, and busy to stop and ask ourselves the most important question: What can we do to break the cycle of being constantly under pressure, always-on, overloaded with information and in environments filled with distractions? Do we need to accept this as the new workplace reality and continue to survive rather than thrive in modern day work environments? What if your organisation's culture could be fuelled by creativity and productivity? It is possible to train the brain to respond differently to today's constant pressures and distraction? The secret to dealing with life's interruptions is incredibly simple: Give each distraction just “one second's” time, mindfully. Many companies turn to mindfulness to help their workers become more attentive and less distracted. Today's guest has worked with a multitude of fortune 500 countries in over 22 countries. He is the founder and managing director of the Potential Project and the focus of today's show is his wonderful book “One Second Ahead”. Today Ross and Antoinette met with Jane Grafton…. Jane is a certified coach (ICF) and senior trainer with the Potential Project, a leading global corporate-based mindfulness training company. Jane shares the central insight she gained through her work with the Potential Project: the distinction between the talkative and the observing mind. The wandering, narrative mind goes off in all sorts of directions, and we have hardly any control over it, whereas that other part of us observes the wandering mind, and is a best described as a space of clarity and awareness. Ross agreed, “Mindfulness is an important aspect of connecting with yourself, to be more balanced so as to harness the right energies.” How can we sit in awareness? Jane shares, “the more we observe the wandering mind, the quieter it becomes over time.” The more we can withdraw from distractions and cultivate being present in the current moment, the more we can see things with clarity in ourselves and others and experience things around us thoroughly and without resistance. We then don’t draw upon the past or the future. To experience this space, we need to be here, now with a clear mind. To connect meaningfully with each other having a clear mind is essential, as otherwise our perception is tainted by judgment, thoughts, preconceived ideas and we don’t see the other for who she or he is. Being present with what is at this exact moment; to accept and feel what is happening, and to be present with family members, co-workers, a crisis, my fear or my energy. Jane, “We can’t develop this capacity to be present without some serious pausing practice.” In this state of presence, valuable information is more likely to come to us compared to being in a hectic, panicky mode. “Slowing down, reflecting on what is happening around you and taking in the situation for what it is, keeps the mind free of assumptions,” says Ross. The mind of the leader.

Mindfulness, selflessness and compassion are keys to successful leadership in the attention economy of today. This is Rasmus Hougaard's conclusion after interviews with hundreds of C-level executives from leading global companies. Originally from Denmark, Rasmus Hougaard was a researcher in organizational development before founding the organization Potential Project. Today he teaches mindfulness all over the world and has previously published the book One second ahead about mindfulness at work. A new leadership for our times After Rasmus Hougaard and his colleague Jacqueline Carter asked themselves what kind of leadership was needed in our times they launched an extensive research project. It took them hundreds of interviews with executives from companies like Accenture and McKinsey in cooperation with Harvard Business Review to reach the conclusions they present in their newly released book The mind of the leader. According to Hougaard and Carter, leaders need these three qualities to be successful today: Mindfulness helps us stay focused and present in spite of all the distractions that constantly fight for our attention. Selflessness counteracts the otherwise normal development when we are promoted to leaders - our ego grows! Selflessness means leaving our own ego "at the door" and instead lead towards the greater purpose. Compassion builds trust and security that our brains need to perform. It gives us and our colleagues a sense of having each other's backs. If we practice these qualities we will become better at them. Our brains are plastic and we become good at what we often do, just like in sports training. These three qualities build cultures that evolve around people rather than profits. Still, profits are crucial for businesses to survive and prosper. So will mindfulness, selflessness and compassion really drive results? According to Rasmus Hougaard the answer is yes and to prove it he tells the story about Marriott Hotel. When other businesses laid off employees during the great depression of the 1920's, Marriott chose to do the opposite instead and take extra good care of their workforce. Their philosophy was, and is, that "if we take care of our associates, they will take care of our guest, and our guests will come back". This was the right decision in the long term and today Marriott is one of the world's largest hotel chains. Mindfulness equips us for the attention economy We live in an attention economy today, where distractions are constantly threatening to steal our focus. Rasmus Hougaard describes how we experience the concept PAID: pressure, always on, information overload and distractions. Mindfulness is a way to handle this challenge and to master our own focus. Rasmus Hougaard, Founder of the Potential Project, was the keynote speaker at the IMI Membership Launch Day. Talking about how mindfulness techniques can create a better leader and deliver greater productivity across the board, Rasmus is one of the world's leading minds behind the 'soft' skills a leader needs to succeed.
Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter, of the global consulting firm Potential Project, make their case for mindfulness, selflessness, and compassion in leadership. Their survey of 30,000 leaders showed those characteristics are foundational — and often missing from leadership development programs. Practicing self-awareness, they say, leads to more focused and more people-focused organizations. They’re the authors of the new book, “The Mind of the Leader: How to Lead Yourself, Your People, and Your Organization for Extraordinary Results."
Hear Troy Cuthbertson, GM QT Melbourne, Scott Boyes VP Operations NSW-ACT for Accor Hotels, Olga Gelauff, Local Government Manager in Woerden, and Gillian Coutts, CEO of the Potential Project answer the leadership moments questions.
Gillian Coutts CEO of the Potential Project talks about how mindfulness can change your life in really significant ways and change the impact you are having on the people around you both at work and home. Gillian came to a crossroads seven years ago after two very significant events arose in her life - motherhood and cancer. Juggling a senior role at work, motherhood and the debilitating effects of chemotherapy almost brought her to her knees until the practice of mindfulness brought a new perspective and a calm that saved her sanity.

In this episode, I talk with Grattan Donnelly. Grattan does a number of different things in his portfolio but mainly working with people using Coaching and Mindfulness. He works as part of a Danish company called Potential Project. Grattan also does training and facilitation. I met Grattan through the IMI Diploma in Executive Coaching. He delivers an 8-week course on developing mindfulness as well which is really highly fulfilling for him. Grattan has always been fascinated by human behaviour and has always had a sense of adventure. Graduating from a B.Comm, Grattan was now free to follow his sense of adventure. He went to Australia for year and came back 12 years later. Grattan said it took him 53 years of his life to figure out what he wanted to do so that message is clear that it’s never too late to find this. We talk about values and one that is most prominent for Grattan is freedom and this matches well in his work. We talk about his journey during these 12 years travelling and many learnings along the way. Travel broadens the mind and the culture shock of coming home was memorable. In 1998, he bought a training franchise for 30k and this made him face one of the big fears that Grattan had from a very young age, which was a fear of public speaking. Something so many of us can relate to. He talks how he worked around confronting this fear for a number of years. We dig into the idea of the opponent in his own head dictated how he operated. This was a real struggle but he keep at it. Looking back now, after learning how the mind works with Mindfulness, he has a different perspective. He’s comfortable with the anxiety now and can deal with it. Then in 2006, when Grattan started the coaching qualification program. From here, he started to realise that he ‘loved learning’ and hated being taught and the cliché of Coaching changing your life became a reality. In 2010, Grattan hit a wall and had burn out. This was a blessing in disguise as it got him on the path of Mindfulness. This part of the journey starts here and we deep dive into how the mind works, the number of thoughts we have every day, what we worry about, and the benefits of mindfulness. We touch on a number of techniques that you can use that can help you slow down and be more present. Other topics touched on are challenges with our current systems, opening up with mindfulness, one-to-one coaching, being in the moment, self-awareness, triggers for mindful moments (like Crows), living on autopilot, dealing with ups and downs, accepting things for what they are, not being able to control everything. I hope you enjoy the story that is packed with good messages Grattan shares from his journey. His clear message is to ‘just enjoy the journey’ and to ‘relax’ as nothing is under control and to get out there and start your mindfulness practice via a proper course. And hopefully you can apply a mindfulness technique when meeting new people. Sometimes life gets in the way of your entrepreneurial journey. Stuff happens and you find yourself wondering if it is all worth it. The grind of keeping your dreams moving forward can weigh heavy. When this happens you might want to quit. Go back to a regular job. But don't. Bad days are just part of the journey. When you need entrepreneurial inspiration - take action to get back in the game. 1. Observe. Great entrepreneurs are always watching and learning. They see what other companies (inside and outside their industry) are doing and look for fresh ideas to get their business a kick in the pants. 2. Read a book. In a world of constant information overload, we benefit from going old school sometimes. Pick up a good book and read. Better yet, re-read a book that inspired you years ago and look for those nuggets that got you going in the first place. 3. Get away from your routine. Sometimes a vacation, even just for a few hours, is all you need to re-charge. Go do something that is not your normal activities, and that break could be just the reset you need. 4. Network across generational lines. Too many people only associate with people who are from their own age group. Millennials need to cultivate friendships with Baby Boomers and Gen Xers. Also the older group needs to make connections with younger professionals. Not just a LinkedIn relationship, but real friendships. When we are exposed to people who have had different experiences, we learn. 5. Ask smart people for advice. Reach out to those you admire and ask them for ideas . Smart people often love to share their ideas with others, but few people make the ask. It is easy to be inspired by people who have wisdom and experience, but if you do not seek them out, you are missing out. 6. Join a mastermind group or group coaching program. Surround yourself with supportive people who will hold you accountable. A group like "The Potential Project" (http://www.thomsinger.com/group-coaching-program) 7. Attend a conference. Get to your industry association and participate. Going to conferences brings you in direct contact with like minded people and fresh ideas. It many take a few years of participating before you will reap the whole value, but showing up at events is a great way to get inspired.
I get the opportunity this week to speak with another Culture Changer.
