RW Franklin, a writer and past Lit Youngstown board member, is here to break down the film, which is a coming-of-age story of a young man finding his place in the world—and his voice as a writer. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 21, 2025 is: jabberwocky JAB-er-wah-kee noun Jabberwocky refers to meaningless speech or writing. // When the character gets angry or flustered, she talks in a sort of agitated jabberwocky that is really quite comical. See the entry > Examples: "The British press now converted the book into their native tongue, that jabberwocky of bonkers hot takes and classist snark. Facts were wrenched out of context, complex emotions were reduced to cartoonish idiocy, innocent passages were hyped into outrages—and there were so many falsehoods." — J. R. Moehringer, The New Yorker, 15 May 2023 Did you know? In his poem titled "Jabberwocky," from Through the Looking-Glass, Lewis Carroll warned readers about a frightful beast: Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch! This nonsensical poem caught the public's fancy upon its publication in late 1871, and by the turn of the 20th century jabberwocky was being used as a generic term for meaningless speech or writing. The word bandersnatch has also seen some use as a general noun, with the meaning "a wildly grotesque or bizarre individual." It's a much rarer word than jabberwocky, though, and is entered only in the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary.
La puntata 146, che non è un VideoPodcast e si scusa ancora dichiarando di chi è la colpa, inizia commentando i retroscena di “Le Mille e una Novella”, di cui sono molto orgogliosa, e continua parlando delle mie letture e delle filosofie connesse all'atto della lettura, includendo “Tutta la vita che resta” di Roberta Recchia, “The Tender Bar” di J. Today, we're focusing on social and emotional learning (SEL) with Abby from Mrs. Mo's Modifications. Abby, a behavior specialist and former special education teacher, is passionate about helping teachers incorporate social and emotional learning into their classrooms. In our conversation, she explains what SEL is and its importance, emphasizing the need to explicitly teach and practice these skills with students. As the new school year approaches, I challenge you to embed social and emotional learning practices in your classroom. Consider incorporating welcoming activities to build rapport, engaging lessons that encourage participation, and teaching topics such as friendship, goal setting, dealing with failure, and coping skills. Model these practices and give students time to practice them.Teaching social and emotional learning is crucial for whole child development. When we are teaching academics, we are teaching human beings. We need to make sure that we're addressing the whole child and giving them support in all areas, not just our content specialist area. Grace and peace to you. I'm Rev. Joe Cailles, the pastor of Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Virginia. Today is Wednesday, July 5, 2023 I started reading an autobiography this weekend called The Tender Bar, written by J.R. Moehringer. J.R. is just a few years older than I am, and he writes about growing up in the mid1970s and early 80s in the town of Manhasset on Long Island. His childhood is straight out of a Dickens novel. His famous radio DJ father abandoned him. He and his mother lived with her abusive and sadistic father. Growing up, JR was hungry for male role models until he found them at the local bar where his uncle worked. The bar's name is fittingly enough called Dickens, and at Dickens JR meets a whole host of men who have issues with work and money and health and gambling and women and many, many issues around alcohol consumption. But they welcome young JR and they teach him about life and love and having confidence, even when life is cold and so hard. They provide community and acceptance for him. I'm just a hundred or so pages into the book but I believe JR's life story is headed toward a good ending. When JR grows up he becomes a journalist and he was the ghost writer for the autobiographies of Andre Agassi and Prince Harry. He is now married with 2 children of his own. When I was growing up one of the most popular TV shows was the sitcom Cheers, set in a bar in Boston. The theme song for cheers was: Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got. Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came. I am not the first pastor to hope that the church could be more like Cheers and the Dickens bar. I want Peakland to be the place where when life is hard, you come here, and folks know your name and they're always glad you came. I want Peakland to be a place where all folks find community and acceptance. We at Peakland had an excellent time last week at vacation bible school. We had about 50 children in the church and 30 adults and youth who gave generously of their time and talents. Just this morning, I delivered to Daily Bread the homemade trail mix that the VBS kids made. In so many ways, this past week of vacation bible school was one of the highpoints of my time at Peakland so far. But I know full well that there are so many of us in the church and in the community who are finding life cold and so hard. We are dealing with our own issues with work and money and health and addictions and challenging family issues. I want Peakland to be the place where we have good times together and we welcome and accept one another and are genuinely glad to see one another, AND I want Peakland to be the place where we aspire to be more than we are right now, where God's love empowers us and resurrects us. As I read about the men in the Dickens bar, and as I remember the characters of Cheers, they don't change much. Many of them feel run over by life and unable to change. I don't what that for us at Peakland. I want a community of folks where we seek a greater connection with our One Trinity God and with each other. I want a community of folks who are hurting and hopeful, who maybe down but will never be out. We are people who dream big for our church and for the wider world. We do that by following Jesus. By following the ways of Jesus, we at Peakland become more generous with our time and our talents. We become more forgiving and more loving. We seek a better way in life not just for ourselves but for all of those around us. Here at Peakland, we have acceptance and aspiration! We extend a warm welcome to others, and we seek spiritual growth! Here at Peakland we want community for us and for all our neighbors.
In this week's episode we look back at the Royal Saga that captured the world media's attention, especially in the UK, but also globally in the early post-pandemic years. As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex fled England to eventually settle in California, the public was made aware of Harry's life long battle with the British tabloid media and the couple's journey as they tried to get out from under the pressure it was placing on Meghan's experience as a woman - and specifically a black woman - entering the institution of the monarchy. Our education started with the release of a prime-time bombshell interview with Oprah, was followed by a 6 part documentary series Harry & Megan (Netflix), and capped off by the now fastest selling non-fiction book of all time Spare by Prince Harry (& J. R. Moehringer). We talk about the parts of the book and the docs that surprised and elicited empathy for their position, as well the ethical questions we need to ask ourselves about how we consume 'celebrity gossip' and what our values really are if we are complicit in the dehumanization of others (even if they are rich, famous, and privileged). Finally, we discuss the rhetoric and narratives that were used with respect to race and the history of colonialism and how Prince Harry was playing the role of the rebel, not the revolutionary. In this episode, I talk about my new fascination with ghostwriting, which has inspired me to listen to Prince Harry's memoir and to read Andre Agassi's autobiography, both of which were ghostwritten by J.R. Moehringer, who recently wrote a compelling article about his ghostwriting experiences in The New Yorker. I also explore my recent attempt at watching The Handmaid's Tale TV series, which I abandoned early on into season two, opting for the novel instead, which I found a much more enjoyable form of entertainment. Another book I discuss is The Consolations of Philosophy, by Alain de Botton, focusing mostly on the section about Seneca, and the consolations he offered for frustration. I talk at great length about my recent, first-ever meditation retreat, the inherent challenges of which were exacerbated first by a head cold and then by biblical rain, chilly temperatures (in late May!), and some unfortunate sleeping accommodations. Lastly, I share my struggles with some recent minor health issues, revisiting de Botton's book and what Montaigne had to say about "physical inadequacy." And in my enduring rebellion against artificial intelligence, I revisit J. Krishnamurti's The Awakening of Intelligence by reading a few passages from it.

Ghostwriting has been made more visible recently with Prince Harry's writer, J. R. Moehringer. But the practice has been around long before the prince's memoir—and is utilized by people other than princes. In fact, an estimated 60 percent of all nonfiction books and 70 percent on the New York Time's best-seller list are ghostwritten. In this episode, I am demystifying all things ghostwriting with writer, developmental editor, and book coach Robin Bethel. This episode is like listening in to two ghostwriters talking shop, trading notes, and discussing the many misconceptions about our craft. Not only do we dive into a detailed discussion of how ghostwriting works, why someone might hire one, and our approach to the craft, but we also talk dollar bills. As in: How much will this cost you? Ghostwriting is not only a powerful process but also a smart investment for entrepreneurs, CEOs, consultants, coaches, and people who want to uncover their unique story and message to make an impact. We discuss how to create a “shelf stable” book that becomes a business sustainability tool—and how to engage fully in the process with a ghostwriter to uncover new insights about yourself and your business. Episode 126 Memoir-Palooza with Denise Massar Today, I'm so happy to welcome back the very first guest of the show, an amazing writer and reader, and, not to brag, but my best friend and soul sister, Denise Massar. Denise is a memoir junkie, and it occurred to me that mid-December is a perfect time to host a Memoir-Palooza, since so many of us like to give them as gifts over the holiday season, and I thought it would be interesting to hear which ones she liked best over the last year. A lot of the ones we talk about today deal with grief and loss, which also makes a lot of sense to address right now, as the holidays can be rough for a lot of people. Denise is my all-time most trusted memoir resource, and I know you're going to love hearing her tell me why she thinks Memoirs are the Best Books Ever. Denise Massar is an author, a mom via birth and adoption, and an adoptee. She writes about parenting, caregiving, racism, and anything else she can't stop thinking about. As a reader, she's most interested in stories about women's day-to-day lives—in the 80s when grade-school classmates were reading Judy Blume, Denise was into Erma Bombeck. Her essays have been published in RAISE Magazine, TODAY Parenting, An Injustice!, MUTHA Magazine, and Jane Friedman's blog. Denise's memoir, SEARCH HISTORY: A Memoir of Loss, Obsession, and Meeting My Mom at 40, is currently on submission. She is represented by Jacquie Flynn at Joelle Delbourgo Associates. “I wish I could tell you that I went to a cabin and wrote it perfectly and got it in on time, and it just flowed out of me. But really, the truth of the matter is, it came in fits and starts. And it was written on notepads and half-filled notebooks and phone apps and bar napkins….I grew up in a time of a lot of white men writing, Oh, my sad childhood stories. And so, my whole thing was I'm not going to do that, I'm not going to do that.” Isaac Fitzgerald walks through the world with an open heart, and luckily for readers, he takes notes. Dirtbag, Massachusetts is his memoir-in-essays, and it covers plenty of ground, from his unconventional childhood and the librarians who helped change the trajectory of his life, to issues of class and code switching and complicated family dynamics, to the craft of writing and his literary inspirations. He joins us on the show to talk about all that and more, including a few things that didn't make the book's final draft, with Poured Over's host, Miwa Messer. And we end this episode with TBR Topoff book recommendations from Marc and Becky. Featured Books (episode) Dirtbag, Massachusetts by Isaac Fitzgerald Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay The White Boy Shuffle by Paul Beatty The Stories of Breece D'J Pancake by Andre Dubus III, Breece D'J Pancake Featured Books (TBR Topoff) Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs The Tender Bar by J.R. Intimating the end, Castaneda decides it is time for him to anoint his successor, the next nagual. His selection is Tony Karam—a student not only of his but also the Dalia Lama. Castaneda informs Tony that has a year to decide whether or not to take the position of the nagual. With the start of the ‘80s, Carlos Castaneda has now become the darling of the New Age movement. But while New Agers are busy championing his past work, Castaneda has begun turning his sights to something new—a secretive project unlike anything he's done before. To secure the help needed, Castaneda opens up admission to his circle of followers. Hollywood producer Janet Yang soon becomes one of his most prized recruits. Gavin Toth, founder of Divine Barrel in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a big believer in the beauty of craft beer. “Beer is art, if you ask any brewer,” he says. “[Breweries] are a community of artists, and sharing that love helps us build this community." Divine Barrel became part of that community back in 2018, when Toth launched the brewery along with his two business partners, Ben Dolphens and Scott Davis. Gavin had been a home brewer for 10 years before that. He also has an extensive background in the restaurant industry. Now, his business card says he “manages generally” — a nod to “The Office” and to Gavin's role overseeing all front-of-house logistics for Divine Barrel. In this episode, Gavin talks through Divine Barrel's strategy to always keep the customer guessing — there is never a set tap list — as well as its strategies for growth and people management. Cheers! And thank you for listening. For more information, visit the Divine Barrel website here. Gavin's book recommendation: The Tender Bar: A Memoir by J.R. Moehringer
Today we're talking to Hollywood Music in Media Awards-winning composer Dara Taylor, best known for her collaborations with composer Christopher Lennertz on a variety of projects, from the Netflix series Lost in Space to the cult 2020 comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar. But her latest solo project is the biggest yet for the young composer - the George Clooney-directed drama The Tender Bar. Based on the memoir by J.R. Moehringer, The Tender Bar is a coming-of-age story about a young writer (Daniel Ranieri as a child, Tye Sheridan as a young man) growing up in 1970s Long Island. With an absentee father and little to do, he spends much of his childhood at the bar his Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck) owns, absorbing the man's homespun wisdom through the cigarette haze of the past. It's a sleepy tale soaked in hazy nostalgia, leading Dara Taylor down a stripped-down approach sufficed with plaintive guitars and pleasant piano. Her sound accentuates the film's ever-present '70s soundtrack, weaving through needledrops from Jackson Browne and Steely Dan without clashing with it. I spoke to Dara about the incredible opportunity this prestige awards-season drama presented her, the challenges of working within an assignment so heavy on source music, and the long, challenging road it takes for a composer to get to this level. You can find Dara Taylor at her official website here. The Tender Bar is currently streaming on Prime Video.
This week, on The Goggler Podcast, Bahir and Uma watch and review George Clooney's adaptation of J.R. Moehringer's The Tender Bar.
We're sharpening our knives this week for our long-anticipated review of the latest Scream film, or Scream 5 unofficially. This is the first of the franchise to not be directed by Wes Craven, as we instead of the filmmakers behind Ready or Not. Is this meta slasher whodunnit as much of a scream? And afterward, we discuss George Clooney's latest directorial effort, The Tender Bar, which is based on the memoir by J.R. Moehringer and stars Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, and Lily Rabe. The Tender Bar…unfortunately this is not the chicken tender documentary stating Ben Affleck that I was hoping for. Join me as we review the memoir of J.R. Moehringer as seen through the creative eyes of George Clooney.
We are re-sharing our interview with J.R. Moehringer in which he talks about his memoir titled "The Tender Bar." The book was recently made into a major motion picture (directed by George Clooney and starring Ben Affleck) .... and the film begins streaming today (January 7th.)
The latest film directed by George Clooney is "The Tender Bar," starring Ben Affleck and based on the memoir of the same name by J.R. Moehringer. Both the film and memoir tell the story of a young J.R., who found a sense community at a local bar after his father left the family before he could remember him. Moehringer, who is also an executive producer of the film, joins us to discuss. "The Tender Bar" is in select theaters now and will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on January 7.
On this episode, I am joined by the twin team of Cole and Justin, better known as The Oscar Expert and Brother Bro, who return to the AwardsWatch Oscar Podcast to talk about the Screen Actors Guild and offer our predictions. We hit all categories and dive into both likely nominations, weird SAG-only possibilities (like Viola Davis and Sandra Bullock in The Unforgivable) and break down how many nominations Belfast and The Power of the Dog can score. Each stand a chance to to get in 3 or even 4 individual actors plus the SAG Cast category. The all-time record still stands at 5 nominations for a single film and we could see it happen once, or even twice, this year. West Side Story is a big part of the conversation, which was recorded on December 26, because at the time no screeners, digital or physical, had been sent to the SAG nominating committee for voting. As of this writing, digital screeners have now reached the 2000-2500 voters but is it too late? Voting opened on December 6 ends on January 9 and many might have already submitted their picks, deciding not to wait on 20th Century/Disney to drop those screeners. Our predictions for WSS reflect that here. Support for this podcast comes from Amazon Studios, presenting Being the Ricardos. Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) are threatened by shocking personal accusations, a political smear, and cultural taboos in Academy Award-winning writer and director Aaron Sorkin's behind-the-scenes drama Being the Ricardos. A revealing glimpse of the couple's complex romantic and professional relationship, the film takes audiences into the writers' room, onto the soundstage, and behind closed doors with Ball and Arnaz during one critical production week of their groundbreaking sitcom I Love Lucy. Featuring J.K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, Jake Lacy, Linda Lavin, Ronny Cox, and John Rubinstein. Now nominated for three Critics Choice Awards for Best Original Screenplay Aaron Sorkin, Best Actress Nicole Kidman, and Best Supporting Actor J.K. Simmons. Variety raves the film is “intoxicating; a beautiful illustration of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz." Being the Ricardos is streaming now on Prime Video. Support for this podcast also comes from Amazon Studios' The Tender Bar, which tells the story of J.R. (Tye Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. As the boy's determined mother (Lily Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie's bar. The Tender Bar is based on the best-selling memoir of the same name by J.R. Moehringer. The Los Angeles Times calls the film “a nostalgic coming-of-age drama lovingly directed by George Clooney... Affleck has never been better." The Tender Bar is in theaters now and streaming January 7 on Prime Video. This podcast runs 1h 20m with music and sponsorship content.
Bryan is joined by journalist J.R. Moehringer to discuss his career working at The New York Times and Los Angeles Times before then discussing his memoir ‘The Tender Bar.' They touch on details of the memoir including Moehringer's reason for writing the book, the significance of the bar Publicans, and how it was received by the individuals featured. "The Tender Bar" is the latest film by George Clooney, which tells the simple but inspiring story of J.R. Moehringer (whose memoir the film is based on), who dealt with struggles related to his absent father and class. Production Designer Kalina Ivanov was responsible for not only crafting period sets during the pandemic but environments that would subliminally inform the audience about the characters, the journey J.R. was going on, and take us through multiple decades. She was kind enough to speak with me about her work on the film, which you can listen to down below. J.R. Moehringer grew up with an absent dad and found a home, of sorts, in the bar where his uncle worked. His memoir, 'The Tender Bar,' has been adapted into a film directed by George Clooney. Writer Anne Rice, who died Dec. 11, grew up in New Orleans and hit it big in 1976 with her first novel, 'Interview with the Vampire.' She followed up with more than a dozen novels. Rice spoke with Terry Gross in 1990.Also, we remember culture critic Greg Tate. His whirlwind writing appeared in 'The Village Voice' and 'Rolling Stone,' often referencing pop culture, literary theory and the latest slang. Tate made an impact on New York's cultural scene in the '80s, at a time when the city was full of aspiring rappers and writers, disco DJs and punk rockers. He died Dec. 7.

To be a man, a boy must see a man. – J. R. Moehringer, The Tender Bar Adultery. Rumors. Scandal. A growing cloud of suspicion. God invades humanity through the womb of an unwed 14-year-old Jewish girl? Mary had been betrothed to Joseph in a romance fit for a fairytale, but her story suddenly appeared to be going sideways. Joseph could've bailed; it was his right given the alleged adultery. How does a woman get pregnant without having sex? If he had chosen this path, would Mary have been left, like most unwed young mothers at the time, with no recourse but to sell her body as a prostitute in order to ensure the survival of her child? But he didn't. What was going on in the heart and soul of Joseph that caused him to risk everything on God? G. K. Chesterton observed that Jesus made three promises to those who consented to being his disciples: they could be completely without fear, absurdly happy, and in constant trouble. No story highlights this trinity of experiences more than the circumstances of the Incarnation. Friends, as we draw closer to Christmas and the celebration of the Rescuing Creator's great invasion of our raw and fragile human scene, may this creative rendering from Joseph's perspective grant you pause. May his story slow you down and draw you afresh into the Deep Magic of the Kingdom of God. May this story strengthen you with wonder, and may you find yourself newly awed before the invitation that your Father in the Heavens extends to you to play an irreplaceable role as his apprentice in the greatest Story of all. Christ has come. Christ is coming. Christ will come again. For the Kingdom, Morgan P.S. To reflect even more on the paradox of this "Average Joe," take six minutes and dive into this video created by one of our BGS allies. P.P.S. Much of this episode is drawn from a compelling Christmas book, The Indescribable Gift. Blending tradition, biblical story, historical fact, and sanctified imagination, Richard Exley uses words like chisels and scalpels to unveil the heart of the Incarnation. You don't want to miss a chance to add this collection of beautifully imagined eyewitness accounts to your holiday library.

Carlos Castaneda didn't just write about a Don Juan—he was one. Over the course of his life, his magnetic personality pulled innumerable women into his orbit. Most stayed briefly. Only a few lasted long enough to see all the different facets that lay underneath the surface of his charismatic personality. One of them was Gloria Garvin. And this is her story. Take This Man (Simon & Schuster) Join us this evening and welcome back an icon of literary Los Angeles, Brando Skyhorse! From PEN/Hemingway award winner Brando Skyhorse comes this stunning, heartfelt memoir in the vein of "The Glass Castle "or "The Tender Bar," the true story of a boy's turbulent childhood growing up with five stepfathers and the mother who was determined to give her son everything but the truth. When he was three years old, Brando Kelly Ulloa was abandoned by his Mexican father. His mother, Maria, dreaming of a more exciting life, saw no reason for her son to live his life as a Mexican just because he started out as one. The life of "Brando Skyhorse," the American Indian son of an incarcerated political activist, was about to begin. Through a series of letters to Paul Skyhorse Johnson, a stranger in prison for armed robbery, Maria reinvents herself and her young son as American Indians in the colorful Mexican-American neighborhood of Echo Park, California. There Brando and his mother live with his acerbic grandmother and a rotating cast of surrogate fathers. It will be over thirty years before Brando begins to untangle the truth of his own past, when a surprise discovery online leads him to his biological father at last. From an acclaimed, prize-winning novelist celebrated for his "indelible storytelling" ("O, The Oprah Magazine"), this extraordinary literary memoir captures a son's single-minded search for a father wherever he can find one, and is destined to become a classic. Praise for Take This Man "Take This Man is a grand story full of fantastic characters--characters whom the author brings vividly to life because they ARE his life. Skyhorses's shifting identity creates an intense quest for meaning, a kind of whodunit memoir that explores the sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, often absurd, and always fascinating childhood that the author, no matter his lineage, has no choice but to claim as his own. Pour a shot of Wolff's This Boy's Life, add a jigger of Moehringer's The Tender Bar, throw in a splash of Rivera's Family Installments, and this is what you get: a heady cocktail of memories with a twist."--Kim Barnes, Author of In the Kingdom of Men and In the Wilderness: Coming of Age in Unknown Country "Take This Man is as astonishing a memoir as I've ever read. Brando Skyhorse's beautifully-told tale of his truly bizarre childhood and his search for a father moved me in a way that few books have. I will never forget Skyhorse's charismatic mother and grandmother, nor the tortured triangle the three of them formed. I was reminded at times of Geoffrey Wolff's "The Duke of Deception", and also of "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls and "The Tender Bar" by J.R. Moehringer. But I guarantee that this is a family story unlike any you've read before. It deserves to become a classic."--Will Schwalbe, New York Times bestselling author of The End of Your Life Book Club "The details of Brando Skyhorse's life are as outlandish and attention-grabbing as his name. Imagine the kind of mother who advertises you for adoption in the back of a magazine and then denies it to your face, or the kind of stepfather who calls his prison 'Arizona State, ' as if discussing his alma mater. Take This Man is a funny and harrowing and touching portrait of the abyss in families between what we know we should do and how our hearts lead us to behave."--Jim Shepard, author of Like You'd Understand, Anyway and You Think That's Bad "A beautiful, compassionate, but also hilarious and hair-raising tale of one boy's life, the lies and truths his mother told, and the damage and the magic she created. Brando Skyhorse is an irresistible writer with an incredible story."--Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle "This gorgeous, wrenching, ultimately uplifting book is a testament to the large and generous heart of its author. Brando Skyhorse has made art out of the chaos of his own extraordinary family history, and, in so doing, has raised the bar, not only for memoirists, but for us all."--Dani Shapiro, bestselling author of Still Writing "Take This Man reaches beyond the bounds of my imagination. We use the word "survivor" with disgracefully casual ease. But this writer truly survived being held hostage, raised by wolves. Brando's grandmother and mother are terrifying and mesmerizing. Their cruelty to their biographer was audacious, calculated and thrilling to read. Stories molested him and nourished him. And it is with relief that I read in Take This Man flashes of Brando's bitterness and heat, sane fury directed at the Scheherazades who toyed with him. Whatever else they did to him, when he escaped he knew how to tell a story, and this is one hell of story."--Geoffrey Wolff, author of The Duke of Deception Brando Skyhorse's debut novel, The Madonnas of Echo Park, received the 2011 PEN/Hemingway Award and the Sue Kaufman Award for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The book was also a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick. He has been awarded fellowships at Ucross and Can Serrat, Spain. Skyhorse is a graduate of Stanford University and the MFA Writers' Workshop program at UC Irvine. He is the 2014 Jenny McKean Moore Writer-In-Washington at George Washington University.
