++++++++++Song-Tipps zur Folge++++++++++ "Born in the U.S.A.", Cover Me", "Darlington County", "Downbound Train", "I'm On Fire", "No Surrender", "I'm Going Down", "Glory Days", "Dancing in the Dark", "My Hometown"
A brilliant record by The Wannadies from 1995 to conclude the Memorabilia Podcast and a bumper episode for our final outing. We discuss the career and discography of Sweden's hugely underrated indie popsters, look back on live performances we attended, and provide a comprehensive guide through their breakthrough third LP, Be A Girl, including their Gold-certified single 'You & Me Song' featured in the movie 'Romeo and Juliet' and a couple of episodes of Coronation Street! We conclude our very enjoyable Wannadies chat with our album ratings. Spoiler alert - they're high ones! We take a look back at August 1995 for the UK, and in particular, we share our thoughts and memories of the singles battle at the top of the UK singles charts between Blur and Oasis, which culminated in Blur hitting the number one spot the day before the release of Be A Girl. As well as the album charts from this week, the end-of-year singles charts for 1995 also come under scrutiny, which, on balance, was just about more good than bad. Artists discussed from 1995 include Radiohead, Supergrass, Michael Jackson, Coolio, Bjork, Ash, Robson & Jerome and Paul Weller. At the box office, the likes of Judge Dread, Batman Forever, The Usual Suspects and Die Hard with Avengance are doing well, and Rick recalls an embarrassing story of getting stranded in a lay-by with a date after parking up following a trip to see Bruce Willis' third outing as John McClane. We wrap things up with a recent gig review at The Crescent Community venue in York, where we saw Sheffield's Before Breakfast and York's The Howl & The Hum. We also discuss our favourite records, which we have covered on the podcast. "Tunes of the Season: Phish, Grateful Dead, and Merry Jams"Larry Mishkin discusses Christmas-themed songs performed by various artists, including The Who and Grateful Dead. Larry delves into The Who's rock opera "Tommy," particularly focusing on the song "Christmas" and its critical reception. He transitions to discussing Grateful Dead's rendition of Chuck Berry's "Run, Rudolph, Run" performed at the Felt Forum in 1971 and analyzes its significance in the band's repertoire.Larry further explores the potential residency of bands like Dead & Company at the Sphere in Las Vegas, following U2's shows there. He touches on Phish's upcoming performances at the same venue and discusses the difficulty in acquiring tickets for these highly anticipated shows.Later, Larry reminisces about New Year's Eve shows by various bands, specifically mentioning Grateful Dead's memorable performances during the countdown. He also features unconventional Christmas renditions by Phish and Jerry Garcia with David Grisman..Produced by PodConx Theme – Rock n Roll ChristmasIf you were in the Mishkin household earlier this morning, you might have heard this blasting out of the speakers:INTRO: ChristmasThe WhoFebruary 14, 1970University of Leeds, Leeds, England aka “Live At Leeds”The Who - Christmas - Live At Leeds (with Footage) (youtube.com)2:00 – 3:17 "Christmas" is a song written by Pete Townshend and is the seventh song on The Who's rock opera Tommy. On the original LP, it opens the second side of the album. Tommy is the fourth studio album by the English rock band the Who, first released on 19 May 1969.[2] Primarily written by guitarist Pete Townshend, Tommy is a double album and an early rock opera that tells the story of Tommy Walker and his experiences through life. The song tells how on Christmas morning, Tommy's father is worried about Tommy's future, and soul. His future is jeopardized due to being deaf, dumb, and blind.[2] The lyrics contrast religious themes such as Christmas and Jesus Christ with Tommy's ignorance of such matters. The rhetorical question, "How can he be saved from the eternal grave?" is asked about Tommy's condition and adds speculation as to the nature of original sin and eternal salvation. In the middle of the song, "Tommy can you hear me?" is repeated, with Tommy responding, "See me, feel me, touch me, heal me." "Christmas" was praised by critics. Richie Unterberger of AllMusic called it an "excellent song."[5]Rolling Stone's Mac Randall said it was one of several "prime Pete Townshend songs" on the album.[6] A review in Life by Albert Goldman considered it beautiful and highlighted the song's "croaking chorus".[7] James Perone said it was "perhaps one of the best sleeper tracks of the collection." Townshend came up with the concept of Tommy after being introduced to the work of Meher Baba, and he attempted to translate Baba's teachings into music. Recording on the album began in September 1968, but took six months to complete as material needed to be arranged and re-recorded in the studio. Tommy was acclaimed upon its release by critics, who hailed it as the Who's breakthrough. Its critical standing diminished slightly in later years; nonetheless, several writers view it as an important and influential album in the history of rock music. The Who promoted the album's release with an extensive tour, including a live version of Tommy, which lasted throughout 1969 and 1970. Key gigs from the tour included appearances at Woodstock, the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival, the University of Leeds, the Metropolitan Opera House, and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The live performances of Tommy drew critical praise and revitalised the band's career. Live at Leeds is the first live album by English rock band the Who. It was recorded at the University of Leeds Refectory on 14 February 1970, and is their only live album that was released while the group were still actively recording and performing with their best-known line-up of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. The album was released on 11 May 1970 by Decca and MCA in the United States,[2] and by Track and Polydor in the United Kingdom. It has been reissued on several occasions and in several different formats. Since its release, Live at Leeds has been ranked by several music critics as the best live rock recording of all time SHOW No. 1: Run Rudolph RunGrateful DeadFelt Forum at MSG, NYCDecember 7, 1971Track No. 10Grateful Dead Live at Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden on 1971-12-07 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive0:11 – 1:54 Run Rudolph Run"[2][3][4] is a Christmas song written by Chuck Berry but credited to Johnny Marks and M. Brodie due to Marks' trademark on the character of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.[5][note 1] It was published by St. Nicholas Music (ASCAP) and was first recorded by Berry in 1958, released as a single on Chess Records. It has since been covered by numerous other artists, sometimes with the title "Run Run Rudolph".[16] The song is a 12-bar blues, musically similar to Berry's popular and recognizable song "Johnny B. Goode", and melodically similar to his song "Little Queenie", the latter of which was released shortly after, in 1959.During its initial chart run, Berry's 1958 recording peaked at number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1958.[22] Sixty years later, the single re-entered the Hot 100 chart at number 45 (on the week ending January 5, 2019), reaching an overall peak position of number 10 on the week ending January 2, 2021, following its third chart re-entry, becoming Berry's third top-ten hit and his first since 1972's "My Ding-a-Ling". In doing so, it broke the record for the longest climb to the top 10 since its first entry in December 1958, at 62 years and two weeks. This Ciip:Out of Brokedown Palace and into You Win AgainPlayed a total of 7 times. This was the first timeLast: December 15, 1971 Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor, MI SHOW No. 2: Little Drummer BoyPhishJuly 3, 1999Coca Cola Lakewood Amphitheatre, Atlanta, GAPhish - The Little Drummer Boy - 7/3/1999 - Atlanta, GA (youtube.com)Start to 1:30 Out of Contact to close the second set. "The Little Drummer Boy" (originally known as "Carol of the Drum") is a Czechoslovakian popular Christmas song written by American composer Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941.[1] First recorded in 1951 by the Austrian Trapp Family, the song was further popularized by a 1958 recording by the Harry Simeone Chorale; the Simeone version was re-released successfully for several years, and the song has been recorded many times since.[2] In the lyrics, the singer relates how, as a poor young boy, he was summoned by the Magi to the Nativity of Jesus. Without a gift for the Infant, the little drummer boy played his drum with approval from Jesus' mother, Mary, recalling, "I played my best for him" and "He smiled at me". Phish has only performed the song three times during the month of December – the debut performance segueing out of “Mike's Song” and into “Whipping Post,” a tease during the 12/28/94 “Weekapaug Groove,” and jammed out of the “YEM” vocal jam (12/2/99) (which melted down until Jon was left singing it to close the set). But the song was jammed out of season during “My Friend, My Friend” (3/18/93) and “Stash” (7/15/93), and teased during “Weekapaug Groove” and “Big Ball Jam” (4/9/94), “Wilson” (8/13/97), “Silent in the Morning” (7/4/99), and "Wilson" (4/16/04). This version is generally considered to be Fishman's most memorable version. It is in the Roxburghe Collection (iii. 452), and is listed as no. 394 in the Roud Folk Song Index. It is also known as "Tidings of Comfort and Joy", and by other variant incipits. An early version of this carol is found in an anonymous manuscript, dating from the 1650s it appeared in a parody published in 1820 by William Hone. Story here is the way Jerry and David play so tight, trading off leads and filling in gaps. A great sound for a traditional tune. There are many sides of Jerry and we don't get to see all of them. Nice to take a break from the traditional Dead stuff and take a look in at what else Garcia was doing during that creative period of his life. SHOW No. 4: Stagger LeeGrateful DeadDecember 30, 1985Track No. 6Grateful Dead Live at Oakland Coliseum on 1985-12-30 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet ArchiveStart – 1:32 As is made clear by the opening lyrics, this is a tale about events that unfolded and played out on Christmas: “1940 Xmas Eve with a full moon over town”. On some occasions, Jerry was known to substitute in “Christmas” Eve. "Stagger Lee", also known as "Stagolee" and other variants, is a popular American folk song about the murder of Billy Lyons by "Stag" Lee Shelton, in St. Louis, Missouri, at Christmas 1895. The song was first published in 1911 and first recorded in 1923, by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians, titled "Stack O' Lee Blues". A version by Lloyd Price reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959. The historical Stagger Lee was Lee Shelton, an African-American pimp living in St. Louis, Missouri, in the late 19th century. He was nicknamed Stag Lee or Stack Lee, with a variety of explanations being given: he was given the nickname because he "went stag" (went to social events unaccompanied by a person of the opposite sex); he took the nickname from a well-known riverboat captain called Stack Lee; or, according to John and Alan Lomax, he took the name from a riverboat owned by the Lee family of Memphis called the Stack Lee, which was known for its on-board prostitution.[2] Shelton was well known locally as one of the Macks, a group of pimps who demanded attention through their flashy clothing and appearance.[3] In addition to those activities, he was the captain of a black Four Hundred Club, a social club with a dubious reputation. On Christmas night in 1895, Shelton and his acquaintance William "Billy" Lyons were drinking in the Bill Curtis Saloon. Lyons was also a member of St. Louis' underworld, and may have been a political and business rival to Shelton. Eventually, the two men got into a dispute, during which Lyons took Shelton's Stetson hat.[5]Subsequently, Shelton shot Lyons, recovered his hat, and left.[6] Lyons died of his injuries, and Shelton was charged, tried, and convicted of the murder in 1897. He was paroled in 1909, but returned to prison in 1911 for assault and robbery. He died in incarceration in 1912. The Grateful Dead frequently played and eventually recorded a version of the tale which focuses on the fictionalized hours after the death of "Billy DeLyon", when Billy's wife Delia tracks down Stagger Lee in a local saloon and "she shot him in the balls" in revenge for Billy's death. Based on the traditional song "Stagger Lee", "Stagolee" or "Stack O'Lee." Robert Hunter wrote a version that he performed solo, and Jerry Garcia subsequently re-ordered the lyrics and rewrote the music for the Grateful Dead's version. More recently Bob Weir has also been performing some of the older traditional versions with Ratdog. Dead released it on Shakedown Street, Nov. 8, 1978 Played 146 times by the Dead1st: August 30, 1978Last: June 18, 1995 Giants Stadium OUTRO: Santa Clause Is Coming To TownBruce Springsteen and the E Street BandCW Post University, Greenvale, NYDecember, 19756Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (Live at C.W. Post College, Greenvale, NY - December 1975) - Bing video2:15 - 4:00 Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" is a Christmas song featuring Santa Claus, written by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie and first recorded by Harry Reser and His Band.[1] When it was covered by Eddie Cantor on his radio show in November 1934 it became a hit; within 24 hours, 500,000 copies of sheet music and more than 30,000 records were sold.[2][3] The version for Bluebird Records by George Hall and His Orchestra (vocal by Sonny Schuyler) was very popular in 1934 and reached the various charts of the day.[4] The song has been recorded by over 200 artists including Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters, the Crystals, Neil Diamond, Fred Astaire, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Bill Evans, Chris Isaak, the Temptations, The Pointer Sisters, the Carpenters, Michael Bublé, Luis Miguel, and the Jackson 5 A rock version by Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band was recorded on December 12, 1975, at C. W. Post College in Brookville, New York, by Record Plant engineers Jimmy Iovine and Thom Panunzio.[14][15] This version borrows the chorus refrain from the 1963 recording by the Crystals.[16] It was first released as a track on the 1981 Sesame Street compilation album, In Harmony 2, as well as on a 1981 promotional, radio-only, 7-inch single (Columbia AE7 1332).[17][18] Four years later, it was released as the B-side to "My Hometown," a single off the Born in the U.S.A. album.[19] Springsteen's rendition of the song has received radio airplay perennially at Christmastime for years; it appeared on Billboard magazine's Hot Singles Recurrents chart each year from 2002 to 2009 due to seasonal air play. Live performances of the song often saw the band encouraging the audience to sing some of the lyrics with—or in place of—the band's vocalists (usually the line "you'd better be good for goodness sake", and occasionally the key line "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" as well). Sometimes, concert crowds would sing along with the entire song, and the band, who were known to encourage this behavior for the song, would do nothing to dissuade those audiences from doing so, instead welcoming the crowds' enthusiasm. This version remains a Springsteen concert favorite during the months of November and December (often concluding the show), and the band is among the few that keep it in their roster of songs during the holidays. It's been a remarkable journey! We're at a significant milestone - our 100th episode of the Mind Body Project! I want to take you back to the very beginning, tracing the remarkable conversations, the amazing guests, and the incredible content I have shared. The past two years' worth of content has been a voyage of personal growth and evolution, with me often playing the role of guinea pig. Trials, triumphs, and everything in between, I have covered it all.Diving into the art of podcasting has been an education in and of itself. The ability to follow the conversation, to take it in unexpected directions, has resulted in some of our most captivating content. This approach has filtered into my other podcast, My Hometown, and has influenced how I perceive other broadcasters' work. But it's not just about the conversations and the guests. The Mind Body Project has been a journey of learning and transformation. A journey that has reiterated one simple truth - we're not alone in our struggles. Each one of us grapples with similar issues, and sometimes, it takes that right moment for things to truly fall into place. So here's to our 100th episode, and many more to come, as we continue navigating the fascinating world of mind and body.https://aarondegler.com/

When you have music in your DNA, you know you're bound to end up on stage. The grandfather of today's guest was performing music in the 40s and 50s and his mother provided musical nurturing when he was young. While there may be a genetic component to musical ability, it is not necessarily the sole determinant of whether someone will perform on stage. It takes a combination of talent, hard work, dedication, opportunity, and luck to become a successful musician. In a special one-hour Dialogue, Marcia Franklin interviews Boise singer/songwriter Eilen Jewell. Jewell, known colloquially as the 'Queen of the Minor Key,' has attracted international kudos and fans for her Americana-style music. She talks with Franklin about why she moved back to Idaho; where she grew up; how she defines and crafts her music; and what's next for her and The Eilen Jewell Band, which also includes her husband, drummer Jason Beek. The couple just welcomed baby daughter Mavis, named after the gospel singer Mavis Staples. Eilen and Jason are also in a gospel band, The Sacred Shakers. Jewell talks with Franklin about why she's attracted to gospel music and performs a song she wrote for her new daughter. This program was taped at AudioLab Recording Studios in Garden City and includes footage of Jewell and her band performing at the Sapphire Room at the Riverside Hotel, also in Garden City. One of the songs, "My Hometown," is about Boise. Originally aired: 12/26/2014

From Eating Tree Bark to Richest Man In South Korea. Born of This Land: My Life Story by Chung Ju-yung. Founders #117 The most inspiring autobiography I've read: Chung Ju-yung the Founder of Hyundai Apr 04 2022 83 mins What I learned from reading Born of This Land: My Life Story by Chung Ju-yung. Upgrade to start learning from history's greatest entrepreneurs. You will immediately gain access to 247 full length episodes. About the Book “As a businessman and a hard working laborer born of this land, I feel an infinite sense of pride that I have contributed my share to this country's breakthrough.” – Chung Ju-yung Born of This Land: My Life Story is an English translation of the Chung Ju-yung's autobiography. Chung ju-yung is the founding chairman of the Hyundai Group. The story begins with the escape from his home to the beginning of Chung's first auto repair shop. Chung's personal account of the construction of Soyang River Dam and the Seoul-Busan Expressway, establishment of Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Seosan Reclamation Project are included in the book. Through Chung's account, we will gain a deeply personal insight into the man who contributed to the Miracle on the Han River. About the Author Chung Ju-yung(1915.11.25~2001.03.21) is the founder of Hyundai, which included the global consumer brand Hyundai Motor Company, one of the world's foremost shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries, and a large number of other affiliates. Born on November 25, 1915 in Tongcheon County, Gangwon Province, in what is now North Korea, Chung ran several small businesses prior to Korea's liberation from Japanese colonialism in 1945. In 1946, he founded the Hyundai Motor Service Center, and the next year Hyundai Construction Company. These two businesses would blossom into the bedrock of one of Korea's industrial titans. Chung presided over the Hyundai group during South Korea's rise from being one of the world's poorest nations to now one of its richest. Aside from his many achievements in the world of business, he also helped secure the 1988 Olympics for Seoul and sought to improve relations with North Korea through public diplomacy. Tap into eons of knowledge and experiences, condensed into digestible portions. Highly, highly recommend. “Uniquely outstanding. No fluff and all substance. David does an outstanding job summarizing these biographies and hones in on the elements that make his subjects so unique among entrepreneurs. I particularly enjoy that he focuses on both the founder's positive and negative characteristics as a way of highlighting things to mimic and avoid.” “I just paid for my first premium podcast subscription for Founders podcast. Learning from those who came before us is one of the highest value ways to invest time. David does his homework and exponentially improves my efficiency by focusing on the most valuable lessons.” “I haven't found a better return on my time and money than your podcast for inspiration and time-tested wisdom to help me on my journey. “I've now listened to every episode. From this knowledge I've doubled my business to $500k a year. Love your passion and recommend your podcast to everyone.” “Founders is the only podcast I pay for and it's worth 100x the cost.” “I have listened to many podcasts on entrepreneurship (HIBT, Masters of Scale, etc.) and find Founders to be consistently more helpful than any other entrepreneurship podcast. David is a craftsperson, he carefully reads biographies of founders, distills the most important anecdotes and themes from their life, and draws commonalities across lives. David's focus is rightfully not on teaching you a formula to succeed but on constantly pushing you to think different.” “I highly highly recommend this podcast. Holy cow. I've been binge listening to these and you start to see patterns across all these incredible humans.” Listening to your podcast has changed my life and that is not a statement I make often. “After one episode I quickly joined the Misfit feed. Love the insight and thoughts shared along the way. David loves what he does and it shines through on the podcast. Definitely my go-to podcast now.” “It is worth every penny. I cannot put into words how fantastic this podcast is. Just stop reading this and get the full access.” “Personally it's one of my top 3 favorite podcasts. If you're into business and startups and technology, this is for you. David covers good books and I've come to really appreciate his perspective. Can't say enough good things.” “I quickly subscribed and it's honestly been the best money I've spent all year. It has inspired me to read biographies. Highly recommend.” “This is the most inspirational and best business podcast out there. David has inspired me to focus on biographies rather than general business books. I'm addicted.” “Anyone interested in business must find the time to listen to each any every Founders podcast. A high return on investment will be a virtual certainty. Subscribe and start listening as soon as possible.” “David saves you hundreds of hours by summarizing bios of legendary business founders and providing valuable insight on what makes an individual successful. THE THESIS: The Party wants more violence. It's right there in their message. Satan cannot create, he can only twist. He cannot experience love, only hate. The Party refuses to build, they cannot really love, their power is fueled by hate and avarice. The rhetoric around this election proves this entirely. We cannot fight for Heaven using the tools of Hell. So . . . how do we fight? THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Modern politics is about the creation of hatred and envy. These things are not of God. We must be good citizens who seek law and order, structure, good leaders. More so, we must put God in our hearts and minds in His rightful place: at the top! Give God the respect to follow His word and let the politicians to their own hating (let the dead bury the dead). Mark 12:17 17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's.” And they were amazed at him. Most of us are praying for our Country. But, are you--like I have been doing--praying with a hardened heart? 1 John 4:19-21 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. Can I bring something for you to sign? Hahaha Anyway, a song popped into my head. Listening to your ideas about red state firewalls, and how so very many good conservative people (and moderate people who are just not crazy leftists) are moving out of destroyed blue cities and states. Although Bruce Springsteen is a leftist, his song "My Hometown" seems to really hit the themes of being forced to leave somewhere that you've spent most-or all-of your life, because of things changing. In the song, the narrator and his family make the hard decision move south because the local economy has collapsed and there are no jobs left. My understanding is the song is based on Springsteen's real experiences growing up in New Jersey. The song may be about leaving for economic reasons, but it makes me think about leaving somewhere for cultural or social reasons. The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life
Today, I'm going to make a few people really happy because this is the Bruce Springsteen Niche Episode that more than a handful of you have been waiting for. The episode where I explain the long-lasting appeal of Bruce Springsteen as told through select Springsteen tracks arranged in order of progressive maturity of narrative voice. The journey takes us from frustrated youth in a small town, to emergent adult getting into trouble, an adult desire for love and reconciliation with the past, deepening radicalization as the hardships of life are revealed to be so often caused by oppressive systems of class and hierarchy, and finally a swell of hope and resilience as a more mature voice of elderhood emerges. Features 15 of his 60+ albums. I have created this playlist in Tidal but I'm going to add a list of each track and the specific album it appears on - because the specific recording matters. This is a musician who is known for tireless touring having played over 2,600 concerts since he signed with Columbia Records in 1972. But of course, he had a career before that - Bruce Springsteen has been the front man of a rock and roll band since his first gig as a 17 year old with his band called The Castiles in 1965 and he's never had any other job since. Never had a workin man job. Not a day. But his dad did. His dad had lots of jobs, it was hard for him to keep jobs. Partially because of declining industrial jobs around New Jersey intensifying in the mid-60s, but also because Bruce's dad struggled with alcoholism and undiagnosed depression and schizophrenia, and that became a defining feature of Bruce's life and his music, wrestling with intergenerational demons and the mirroring of one family's life in the larger decline of America as a country and an idea at the end of the 20th century. “Jesus came into his own country.” He's has now left the place where he healed Jairus' daughter and the hemorrhaging women and has returned to Nazareth. It's the place where he grew up and spent the first thirty years of his life. He's come home, back to His hometown.I have often spoke about the little town I grew up in. I knew most everyone there. I had the same friends year after year after year. I graduated high school with many of the same kids I had known since first grade. I knew everyone and everyone knew me. There's was a closeness. We had a history; a common bond. I wonder what your hometown experience was like. But today I want to talk about more than a geographical location. More than old memories from a scrap book. This hometown I speak of tonight isn't something outside of us, it's within us. It's the place we form our routines and habits, attitudes, beliefs, opinions, prejudices, assumptions, and values. This hometown is a lens through which we see the world, one another, and ourselves. This is our internal hometown and it shapes who we are and how we live. It's our place of comfort and familiarity. It is that place inside your own skin where you feel you belong; your internal hometown.Join Dr. T. D. Worthington for this week's message "My Hometown."

Bonchon, which translates from Korean as “My Hometown,” has over the past year begun to offer a fast-casual version of the traditionally casual-dining fried chicken restaurant and plans to introduce a delivery-carry-out version later this year. “Our franchise partners are the ones that really led us down this path,” said Flynn Dekker, Bonchon CEO since 2019, in this Nation’s Restaurant News interview. “They were the ones that were saying, ‘Hey, we see where the market is going. We like casual [dining], but I'd like to test fast-casual and would like to test it in a delivery-carryout-only model.” The two fast-casual versions have opened in Addison, Texas, and Towson, Md. Dekker said the fast-casual Bonchon units cover about 1,800 to 2,000 square feet and the delivery-carryout, or DelCo, version will range from 1,500 to 1,700 square feet. In Datassential’s most recent Firefly 500-plus rankings, Bonchon rose from No. 235 in 2019 to No. 216 in 2020. Unit growth was about 10.2%. U.S. sales increased about 5.8% in the period.

The lyrics to one of the most popular Christmas hits of all came as bittersweet recollections from a lyricist who had just lost his brother. This is the story of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. Behind the Christmas Hits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! Santa Claus is Comin' to Town is one of the early original Christmas hits of the 20th Century. Written by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie, the first recording was believed to have been made in October 1934 by a banjoist named Harry Reser. Eddie Cantor was a popular performer in Vaudeville shows at the age of 15. Over the next 15 years, he became a star on Broadway and had several hit records. He was also the host of a daily radio show…and by 1933, he was the highest paid radio star in America AND the top box office draw at the movies. This was during the depression and Eddie felt strongly that the world needed a bright, upbeat Christmas song to feel good about. For months, he tried to write one of his own, but nothing clicked. This is where Haven Gillespie came in. A part-time newspaper writer from Covington, Ohio who was also trying to make it as a songwriter. Eddie Cantor started to call around to music publishers looking for unreleased Christmas songs. Edgar Bittner was a music publisher at Leo Feist Inc. in New York City. He called Gillespie to his office and pitched him to write something for Cantor. Gillespie once said Bittner told him he a vocabulary that children could understand – Gillespie didn’t quite know how to take that…so he passed. But on the subway ride home after the meeting, he had a thought. He remembered something his mother used to tell him when he was a child. Not only did Santa know when kids were sleeping – he also knew when they had been bad or good. He pulled out an envelope from his pocket and began to write down other images he had as a kid – how his mother’s warnings would keep him and his siblings in line. And that’s when he remembered his mom pointing a finger at his brother, Irwin, and saying “you better watch out…you better be good, because Santa Claus is coming.” Irwin had just died in Kentucky weeks earlier, so the recollection was bittersweet. For the rest of the ride home, Gillespie would continue to write about his childhood…but he didn’t have a melody…so he turned to his composer friend, J. Fred Coots. He was the one who noticed the rhythm in what Gillespie was writing and started banging away at the piano. 24 hours later, Gillespie and Coots went back to Edgar Bittner and presented the song, which was immediately sent to Eddie Cantor. Cantor didn’t love it right away, but his wife did…and that was the stamp of approval it needed. Before ever performing it live on his show, Eddie recorded it in the studio so the records were ready to go. He also worked with the publisher to print and distribute the sheet music to stores to sell, knowing that once the song was out there, people would want to know how to sing & play it themselves. Eddie Cantor was right. During his live Broadcast from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November 1934, Eddie performed the song live for the first time. And within 24 hours of that performance, 30,000 records and 500,000 copies of the sheet music had been sold. Despite it’s instant success, Gillespie always struggled with the song as it reminded him of his late brother Irwin, who died just before getting the call from Edgar Bittner to write something for Cantor’s show. The song is a classic and in 1970 was turned into an animated TV special. Countless versions have been recorded, but Bruce Springsteen’s has been the most popular of the modern era. It was recorded live in 1975, but wasn’t released until Bruce allowed it be included in a Sesame Street compilation album in 1982 called In Harmony. It didn’t really become popular until the Born in the USA album came out and Bruce made it the b-side of the single My Hometown in 1985. Behind the Christmas Hits is Presented by Pizza Pizza. This episode "Little Pink Houses in My Hometown of Allentown" is a "threefer" on the death of the American dream. Several big 80's hits by prominent rockers detailed the decline of industrialized jobs and the death of middle America and really, indicted America for failing to live up to its promises. Pink Houses by John Cougar Mellencamp, a top ten hit in 1983My Hometown by Bruce Springsteen, which went to #6 in 1985, andAllentown by Billy Joel - released in 1982, went to #17While Pink Houses' chorus is often misunderstood to be purely patriotic, it's a sarcastic reproach of middle America's declining opportunities. Even Mellencamp called it an “anti-American” song. We'll look at why this topic was so prevalent in the hits of the 80's and discuss the songs' continued resonance. ***Recommendations & Resources***Check out this Atlantic piece on Pink Houses as a track in their “Complicated Patriotism” feature.A similar piece from NPR, their “Sound of Your American Dream” mixtape.Want more info on the economics that caused the shifts in factory closures? There are tons of articles and books written about it, but here's an interesting lesson. Suggested Pairing: Enjoy some deviled eggs while you listen! Or try this recipe for copycat Taco Bell Meximelts. ****A wee correction, Joel doesn't wear a denim jacket in the Allentown video (memory fail) but Springsteen and Mellencamp are absolutely known for it. (Billy's a leather jacket guy). Note that denim czars Levi Strauss moved their production and manufacturing overseas in the 80's… here's where they manufacture now. ***AND***Check out our new website at www.sickburnspod.com to leave a comment or a voicemail!Follow us on Instagram @Sick_Burns_PodFollow us on twitter @Sick80sFollow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SickBurnsPodcastOr email us at Burningthe80s@gmail.com and tell us what you think.
