What if you could transform your child's educational experience by stepping away from traditional schooling? Join us on The Homeschool How To as we sit down with Rachel Chioreanu, a former middle school teacher and school counselor, who made the leap to homeschooling her children. Rachel shares her candid observations on the inefficiencies of public schooling, especially for kids with learning differences, like her son who has dyslexia and dysgraphia. She emphasizes the value of tailoring a personalized homeschool curriculum that fits each child's unique needs, rather than replicating a conventional classroom environment at home.Discover an array of homeschooling resources that can make the educational journey both enriching and enjoyable. Rachel and I discuss programs like Brave Writer, Mystery Science, and the Tuttle Twins book series, which not only focus on core academic subjects but also uphold family values. We dive into how setting academic and social goals with your children can encourage self-driven learning and adaptability. The potential of AI in curriculum personalization also makes an appearance, promising a new frontier in homeschooling. The social dynamics of homeschooling are just as crucial as the academics. It's no secret that many parents struggle with exactly how much screen time is healthy for their kids. Some wage daily battles to manage their children's time with devices, and others feel powerless to do anything to control the siege. But the digital world is here to stay, so it's more important than ever for caregivers to understand and embrace technology in their kids' lives. For this episode in our Life Skills series, we talk with Keith Schacht, CEO and co-founder of The Explanation Company. He offers a new perspective on the role that technology plays in growing up today. He shares his vision for a world where using it becomes a skill that young people tap to open doors, explore new ideas, and develop their interests. Listen now to hear about: The danger of focusing solely on the duration of screen time [03:43]; The benefits kids gain from their time on devices (and not just when they're playing Mindcraft) [04:48]; How to encourage children to use screen time to explore interests, passions, and potential careers [07:49]; The value of proactively parenting in the digital age to help kids develop a healthy relationship with technology [15:10]; How technology can be a tool that builds independence [18:20]. What are the psychological building blocks that support a serial founder's journey from ideation to massive growth to acquisition, to building again—and again? On this special episode of The Founder's Mindset, Dr Gena Gorlin is joined by serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur Keith Schacht, who has founded and sold 4 technology companies. His latest, Mystery Science, was being used in over half of American elementary schools at the time of its acquisition by Discovery Education. Now, he's working on world-changing venture number 5. He joins Gena for a candid discussion of how he stays anchored to reality during that elusive, early search for product-market fit; why and when he made the decision to sell his company; and how he approaches starting all over again. Gena and Alice then debrief to explore what other founders can learn from his experience. Subscribe to The Founder's Mindset so you never miss an episode. This is a podcast from Entrepreneur First. How do you extrapolate insights on pandemic leadership, the role of women in edtech, and the dynamics of Zoom in just over 20 minutes? Listen to Kelli Campbell, President of Discovery Education as she imparts on how Discovery Education continues to reinvent products and services during COVID, how gender disparities in education need to be rectified, and what board meetings may look like in the “new normal.”In her new role as President, Campbell will expand her portfolio and oversee all aspects of Discovery Education's customer lifecycle management operations, as well as manage the recently acquired Mystery Science business. Most recently, Campbell served as the company's President of International and University. In that role she led the development of innovative partnerships with Ministries of Education in Egypt, Chile, and with channel partners worldwide, and oversaw the development of the Discovery Education's Impact Network, whose members offer educators online access to Discovery Education's high-quality graduate-level professional learning content.Previously, Campbell led the creation and launch of the Discovery Education's Techbook line of business. In 2015, Campbell served on the committee that developed President Barack Obama's “Digital Textbook Playbook.” Prior to joining Discovery Education in 2006, she served as Vice President of Marketing & Product Development at Clearvue & SVE. An early pioneer in using cloud-based digital content for instruction, Campbell directed the creation, launch, and distribution of the award-winning PowerMediaPlus.com media-on-demand system.“Throughout my career at Discovery Education, I've had the privilege of seeing firsthand the tremendous impact our digital resources and professional learning can have on teaching and learning,” said Campbell. “I'm excited to work alongside Scott, our Board of Directors, and the rest of the Discovery Education team on our shared mission to prepare all learners for tomorrow by creating innovative classrooms connected to today's world.”Below is an excerpt from a blog post Kelli wrote on LinkedIn last month:Right now, an estimated 76% of K-12 educators in the U.S. are women, according to AASA. The issue isn't that most teachers are women, but rather like far too many industries and sectors, women's leadership isn't reflected in leadership positions. Only 24% of school district's chief officers are women. While the total percent of women superintendents grew from 6.6% to 13.2% since 1990, 87% of men still hold that role within school districts nationwide. The lack of representation of women, particularly women of color, in these leadership levels impacts all of education.Diversity at all levels fosters innovation and stronger, more equitable informed decision making that is reflective of today's students. Women's leadership in education supports the need for ongoing equity and diverse voices in the content, resources, and access provided to teachers and students in the U.S. and around the world. While we need to have more women in leadership positions, reaching that goal cannot (and should not!) follow the old narrative of women ‘leaning in'. Research shows that addressing gender differences in leadership isn't as simple as encouraging women to be more like men. Rather, all genders must identify, practice, and emulate successful leadership styles, which in practice, include many traits commonly associated with women's working styles. In my experience, what makes a good leader are those very traits I see most often in my women colleagues: perseverance, empathy, open-mindedness, grace under pressure, multitasking, and open communication.

Results May Vary Podcast Podcast: Design Thinking for Living
Surprise, listeners! It’s been quite awhile since our last episode, but that doesn’t mean you’ve heard the last of me and Chris, or the amazing individuals we’ve met who have been intentionally designing their own lives. In fact, we dug into the Results May Vary vault and found 3 previously unreleased, yet truly inspiring episodes that we’re excited to be sharing with you now.In addition, Chris and I have big news: we’d already been planning to launch a comeback even before Covid hit, and now seems like a particularly useful time for us to follow through! Because a quarantine can’t kill our creativity. In fact, now that our well-worn habits and daily and even institutional structures have been thrown out the window, this transition period is an unprecedented opportunity for all of us to imagine new futures for ourselves, our communities, and the world. And you know what? Launching a brand new season of Results May Vary isn’t even the biggest news. Chris and I are absolutely thrilled to announce the addition of a third co-host, Katia Verresen. Katia provides transformational coaching for inspired leaders at companies like Airbnb, Facebook, Refinery29, Mystery Science, and The New York Times. Her passion is to help ambitious leaders achieve their full human potential, and once you meet her in episode 1 of our new season, you’ll understand from her infectious energy exactly why we had to add her to our team. Another team member we’re infinitely grateful for is Jenny Luna, who joins us as our first ever professional producer. Jenny has made auditory magic happen on podcasts for Mother Jones and Stanford University Graduate School of Business, and we’re excited to have her do the same for us.So stay tuned. We’ll be launching our 3 Vault episodes soon. And will follow up with our new season in short order after that. Now without further ado, feel free to dig into the treasures we discovered in our vault. And then we’ll talk to you soon in our new season, starting off with our interview introducing you to Katia!

Have you ever had a period in your athletic or professional career where you kind of felt like you were on fire? Maybe you made a whole streak of consecutive shots in a game, or executed one good idea after another at work. In his book, The Hot Hand: The Mystery and Science of Streaks, my guest today explores why success sometimes seems to arrive in clusters like this. His name is Ben Cohen and he's a sports writer for The Wall Street Journal. Ben and I begin our conversation with an explanation of what it means to have a hot hand, and how this phenomenon has often been studied in basketball, but can be seen in a wide range of areas, including the film career of Rob Reiner. We then discuss what may cause winning streaks, whether or not they can be induced, and what Stephen Curry does when he starts feeling hot in a game. We also talk about what the video game NBA Jam can tell us about the psychology of the hot hand. We then dig into what the academic research has found on whether the hot hand truly exists or is really just a cognitive illusion. We end our conversation with what you can start doing today to take advantage of having a hot hand. Get the show notes at aom.is/hothand.

Matthew Troy will lead the orchestra in the first Masterworks Concert of the 2018 - 2019 season in P. E. Monroe Auditorium at Lenoir-Rhyne University. He speaks with WDAV about the wide-ranging program he’ll conduct, titled “Mystery, Science and Theater,” with selections from Liszt and Weber, to Rimsky-Korsakov and Bernard Hermann. Toronto, Ontario Canada producer Futurewave and Washington DC emcee/producer J Scienide team up to bring “Mystery Science”. Futurewave was recently spotted on the pages of Mass Appeal with the heavy hitting “Trust the Process” feat Daniel Son. This time he’s behind the boards with J Scienide with this creepy sonic masterpiece. J Scienide has been making a name for himself with the release of his debut album “The Actual Heat” which has been getting major spins from the likes of Hot 97’s Funk Master Flex, Peter Rosenberg, Statik Selektah, Sway in the Morning, and many places around the world. Look out for more work between these two in the future. Dropping in February 6, 2018 on ALL DIGITAL PLATFORMS and our officialcratemusic.bandcamp.com page.

Bill Corbett is a third of the comedy powerhouse known as Rifftrax. Where all the guys cut their teeth making fun of bad movies on Mystery Science 3000 that aired on Comedy Central (Comedy Channel at the time) and the Sci-Fi Channel. I talk with Bill about the process of writing jokes for the movies with his comedy partners, filling in on Crow T Robot as a puppeter and voice talent, getting in trouble as a kid in Brooklyn, getting into fights in Colorado, co-writing the movie MEET DAVE starring Eddie Murphy and where that movie may have went wrong, how he met his wife, going to Yale, his love of the stage and Minneapolis, Minnesota, and much much more!! Had a great time talking with Bill. My girlfriend, Deborah Ann Woll, is such a big fan I asked her to help me intro the podcast. Please Share, Please Listen, Please Enjoy!!! Today we review Machine court where machine's judge humans. This is the second time we've reviewed a podcast that is just chock full of creativity, and “thinking outside the box.” I love the fact that its not another comedian interviewing comedians. It's not a tech show about Macs. It's not podcast reviewing movies. It's original. That's the good news. Their artwork is awesome. Their id3 tags are in place. Their website is easy to navigate, and the opportunity to subscribe to their podcast is abundant. I so wanted to love this podcast. But in the end the one thing missing was engaging content. It didn't make me laugh. It did make me think, and groan. This may be partly due to a lack of categories in iTunes. I see why they put this under comedy as they are attempting humor, but this is almost a drama as they put so much into the production with lavish sound effects and they really put a lot of gas into the theater of the mind. I was impressed. It just didn't make me laugh. It's labeled as a comedy, so I expected to laugh. This may be one of those podcasts where you need to give it a couple of spins. Go for more than one episode so you can get to know the characters. I know for me, the one robot's voice was like nails in a 400 foot chalkboard by the end of the episode. I give them credit for never breaking character, but it was annoying to me. They also did a bit where a robot sounding like Jimmy Stewart was partaking of “Glory Hole” in a men's bathroom. I get this joke. I was the one who wondered what it would be like to listen to George and Mary Bailey sounded like during sex back in 2005. Its funny to put squeaky clean Jimmy in a Glory Hole environment. The episode was called “Sexlandia” so I expected some sex stuff. In the end, it made me smile at the effort, but not a giggle. Sorry. Things They Might Want to Do: If these episodes need some setup, maybe add a “on last week's episode such and such happened.” For me, the content didn't move me. I'm not sure if any kind of setup that would explain the characters would help. I loved robots on Mystery Science theater, but not so much here. Things They Are Doing Great: So much effort goes into these episodes. The artwork is great. The website is clean. Their audio is good. They have a community on facebook. It truly bothered me that I couldn't give this a thumbs up. Listen to Monster Court with the Player Below
