In this episode Elham Ansari takes us on a millennia-long journey inside of Ayurvedic medicine. In expert fashion, she distills down what can be a dauting philosophy to make pragmatic into a practice that anyone can adopt into their daily routine. We spend a lot of time covering Ayurvedic nutrition, from the exotic to the local, including animal-based food medicine. We also discuss other aspects of Ayurveda including marma points, which are similar to acupuncture points, and other therapeutic tools, and the philosophical foundations of Ayurveda, including the doshas and elements. From within this philosophy, we find the spiritual roots of Ayurveda and how it applies to our personal journeys in this life, the scientific roots that allude to genetics and DNA long before those terms existed, and the similarities to other traditional medicines. Elham has been an instructor of Ayurveda at Pacific Rim College for nearly a decade and has been in practice far longer. She studied under the renowned Ayurvedic practitioner Vasant Lad, and we talk about how that experience impacted her. Her Ayurvedic nutrition courses and clinics at PRC are all live online and thus her teachings and therapies can be accessed from around the globe. This week I'm keeping it super simple for ya'll - there is SO much out there around nutrition, and what "diet" is best. There are seemingly so many "rules" around nutrition, and so many "rule breakers" it can feel overwhelming to understand how to eat in a way that honours your body and mind, but that also makes you feel GOOD! In this episode I'm sharing 3 simple Ayurvedic concepts to live by, and we go deeper into: - Why simplicity is so important - Why we want to cultivate positive discipline within our relationship to food - Why most intuitive eating doesn't actually work - and how to approach this consciously for best results - There is no one size fits all approach to nutrition - And so much more My mission when it comes to nutrition is to empower shit $#@% out of you to eat in a way that is in alignment for your body and mind and that allows you to feel free on all levels. This sets you up powerfully for a calm clear body and mind, deeper spiritual practice, and the energy to fulfil on your deeper purpose and vision. Colette discusses Ayurveda's teachings on gross digestion. Understanding these stages, the timing of each stage of digestion and the doshas involved can help you have clarity around any digestive issues you may be experiencing. The digestive process starts at the mouth and ends at the rectum and the whole process can take up to 6 hours or more. The timing of digestion depends on the strength of the digestive fire or agni, the individuals constitution and the type or qualities of food that has been consumed. According to Ayurveda, there are 3 stages involved in gross digestion: Stage 1 - Sweet stage or Madhura Avastha Paka Stage 2 - Sour stage or Amla Avastha Paka Stage 3 - Pungent stage or Katu Avastha Paka Thanks to Kerala Ayurveda Academy for sponsoring this episode. Welcome Back to this weeks episode of the Yogi Fuel Podcast! In this episode I am diving deep into understanding the diets and the Doshas. There are sooo many diets out there, from Keto, to paleo, to FODMAP, to vegan, vegetarian, and it can be overwhelming to understand what way of eating works well for us, let alone understand these from an Ayurvedic lens. Well, in this episode I hope to dismantle some of that for you. I'm going to be covering: - What Ayurveda says about these “diets” - hint it depends ;) - How we can modify any way of eating in alignment with Ayurveda - because ultimately Ayurveda doesn't subscribe to one way of eating - How Ayurvedic eating isn't exclusive to an Indian Diet - Covering the main principles of eating in alignment with Ayurveda - And what Inuitive eating REALLY is - another hint it ISN'T about eating whatever you want, and how we can start to truly intuitively eat And so much more This episode was honestly so much fun to record, and as I was making the edits I was so happy with what came through, and I'm sooo excited for you to listen. A four-thousand-year-old art and science, Ayurveda is the cousin of traditional Chinese medicine, and yoga's sister-science. Within the context of Ayurveda, every person is completely unique, living in a wholly unique body, and having a fantastically unique experience of life that nobody else has ever experienced before, nor will anybody else experience after. It was a pleasure and honor to be a guest presenter for the Necessary Nutrition Academy to introduce theories behind Ayurvedic Nutrition. During this presentation students will learn the basic theories of Ayurveda as applied to nutrition principles, including the panchamahabhuta and tri-dosha theories. This information will be integrated to understand how certain foods aggravate or pacify the tri-doshas and overall health. Remember the saying, "If diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. If diet is correct, medicine is of no need.". Visit HealthierVibrations.com for more education, webinars and certifications with Dr. Christie Smirl.
The basic Ayurvedic nutrition guidelines have a lot to do with how we eat, not just what we eat. And, based on the 'one size does not fit all' principle in Ayurveda, nutrition is not generalized, it is personalized. This blend of personalized nutrition and eating in the right way is what Ayurvedic nutrition is all about.
Episode #92 The dhatus are the tissues of the body. Dhatu translates to ‘that which holds together’ because the dhatus/tissues support the body and give it shape, holding it together. The dhatus are made from and nourished by the food we eat. There are 7 dhatus or tissues in the body according to Ayurveda and in this episode, Colette explains the fascinating tissue nutrition system and how the nutrition is a step-by-step process of nourishment from the gross to the subtlest dhatu which is our reproductive tissue. The seven tissues or dhatus in the body are: Rasa - plasma/serum/lymph Rakta - blood, the red blood cells Mamsa - muscle tissue Meda - adipose tissue or fat tissue Asthi - bones & cartilage Majja - bone marrow, connective tissue, nerve tissue Sukra/Artava - male (sukra) and female (artava) reproductive tissue Contact Colette via email info@elementshealingandwellbeing.com Visit the Elements Healing and Wellbeing website to find out more about Colette's online services: Ayurvedic Reset Cleanse Online Ayurvedic Consultations Daily Habits for Holistic Health Online Course Click here for info on the French Riviera Ayurveda & Yoga Retreat October 11-13th, 2019. Episode #26 is all about Ayurvedic nutrition. It's so confusing these days with so much information on different eating regimes and diets! Ayurveda has a very logical approach to nutrition. First of all, Ayurveda tells us that there's no 'one size fits all' when it comes to food. Ayurveda takes an individualised approach to nutrition and what you eat depends on your constitution or mind/body type. In this episode, Colette breaks it all down and talks about: Ayurvedic nutrition vs. Conventional nutrition The six tastes of Ayurveda - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent The affect of each taste has on our body How each taste affects the doshas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha Dietary recommendations for each dosha The affects of each taste on the mind and the emotions The affect of too much of each taste on the body and mind The affect of too little of each taste on the body and mind The importance of food Ayurvedic guidlines for eating Choosing the right foods for you Poor food combinations Click here for more info and to register for the Daily Habits for Holistic Health course, starting May 10th, 2018 Download the six tastes and food combination chart here Book your in-depth Ayurvedic Consultation with Colette here Join us over at the Elements of Ayurveda podcast group Thanks for listening!
