Queen Elizabeth II considered abdication to be a dirty word. She remained on the throne until her death at 96, and left her son Charles to waiting 73 years to take the job he was born to. But abdication is not so despised in other countries. In recent decades more monarchs have elected to retire and pass the throne on to the next generation. Thus allowing them to spend their golden years relaxing and enjoying their ridiculously well-funded retirement plans. Plus we'll find out what an ex monarch does in retirement; from studying fish to living in a log cabin to getting into even more scandal than they did on the throne. W swiatyniach szintoistycznych (shrine) mamy kapłanów, a w buddyjskich (temple) mnichów.

"As a natural life cycle occurrence, death invites either solidarity or diplomacy. The death of Japan's Emperor Hirohito in the first January weekend of 1989 brought an end to the so-called ‘62 year-long “Shōwa” (昭和) period of war and peace'. With imperial Japan's atrocities during World War II long laid to rest, the whole world—including nations formerly made victims of invasion and colonization—has sent its deepest sympathies. This also ushered in the birth of the “Heisei” (平成) era under the succeeding emperor Akihito. Radio NHK's English shortwave radio broadcast reported a global response to this significant and sad event, heard at 07:50 GMT in January 7th of 1989 at 15270kHz. “Weekend Rain” reimagines the sounds of rain, contained within recurring cyclical structures that expand in duration over time. Recordings of musical instruments—namely the piano and Japanese koto—and found objects diffuse a canvas of raining sounds as the Radio NHK broadcast interweaves with excerpts of haiku poetry I wrote in 2020 that bore the same title. While context bears no relation to the historical event during its writing, the poetry creates a unique narrative as it now forcibly responds to the broadcast: ‘Someone drops a grain of salt; Massive ocean waves jolt crowds awake! Wide-eyed stray cats rejoice.' A Spanish numbers station broadcast I randomly recorded (07:55 UTC, October 4th of 2021 at 9065kHz) joins this poetic garb of symbolism, alluding to encryption and secrecy of intelligence communications underneath public access of information with press and media broadcasts. This work catches a small glimpse of worlds inhabiting shortwave radio, while reflecting on the impact of Japan's past and continuing involvement in global affairs." Composition by Juro Kim Feliz. Ken Ruoff’s Japan’s Imperial House in the Postwar Era, 1945-2019 (Harvard UP, 2020), is a revised and expanded version of the author’s The People’s Emperor: Democracy and the Japanese Monarchy, 1945-1995 (2003). The book is an extensive and detailed treatment of the Japanese imperial institution as it enters a new era, Reiwa, with the abdication of the Heisei emperor (Akihito) in 2019. In addition to The People’s Emperor’s discussions of the creation of the postwar imperial institution as a “constitutional symbolic monarchy,” the continued (clandestine) role of Hirohito in politics, the postwar emperors’ approach to Japan’s war responsibility, the “massification” of the imperial family as a kind of model “middle-class” household for the postwar, and various forms of resistance from conservatives, Japan’s Imperial House adds two new chapters and an extensive and important addendum to one other. The two new chapters, respectively, provide a retrospective on the Heisei era (1989-2019) and an overview of the challenges facing the imperial line with Akihito’s son, Naruhito, now on the Chrysanthemum Throne as the Reiwa emperor. The addendum is to chapter 5, which discusses the ways in which anti-democratic and otherwise revanchist forces in postwar Japan coopted the playbook of democratic organizing to achieve (largely symbolic) victories. As we discuss in the interview, Ruoff returns to this topic because his analysis turned out to presage the tactics and successes of Nippon Kaigi, Japan’s most influential nongovernmental ultra-conservative lobbying group, during the Abe Shinzō regime. Terms and names perhaps unfamiliar to some listeners that get bandied about in our discussion include tennō (sovereign, emperor), Yoshida Shigeru (influential early postwar prime minister), Kobayashi Yoshinori (an often-controversial manga artist), and Yasukuni Shrine (which has enshrined prominent Class-A war criminals in addition to the general war dead since March 1978). In addition to The People's Emperor's discussions of the creation of the postwar imperial institution as a “constitutional symbolic monarchy,” the continued (clandestine) role of Hirohito in politics, the postwar emperors' approach to Japan's war responsibility, the “massification” of the imperial family as a kind of model “middle-class” household for the postwar, and various forms of resistance from conservatives, Japan's Imperial House adds two new chapters and an extensive and important addendum to one other. The two new chapters, respectively, provide a retrospective on the Heisei era (1989-2019) and an overview of the challenges facing the imperial line with Akihito's son, Naruhito, now on the Chrysanthemum Throne as the Reiwa emperor. The addendum is to chapter 5, which discusses the ways in which anti-democratic and otherwise revanchist forces in postwar Japan coopted the playbook of democratic organizing to achieve (largely symbolic) victories. As we discuss in the interview, Ruoff returns to this topic because his analysis turned out to presage the tactics and successes of Nippon Kaigi, Japan's most influential nongovernmental ultra-conservative lobbying group, during the Abe Shinzō regime. Akihito, who abdicated in April, was a paradoxical figure: a hereditary monarch, the son of the wartime emperor, Hirohito, strictly barred from political utterance, who even so stood out against the historical revisionism of the nationalist right. Richard Lloyd Parry considers the former emperor’s part in the intellectual and political debate over Japan’s wartime record, and its history of apology – or non-apology – for its conduct in East Asia.Read the lecture in the LRB: lrb.me/lloydparrypodSign up to the LRB newsletter: lrb.me/lrbnewsletterpod See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Mi a dolga a japán császárnak? Mi történt 1945 után? Mennyire stabil a japán monarchia?

Mīti vēsta, ka mūsdienu Japānas monarha senči sākuši valdīt arhipelāgā 7. gs. pirms Mūsu ēras, taču daudz maz droši ticamas ziņas par pirmajiem Jamato dzimtas imperatoriem atrodamas no Mūsu ēras 5. gadsimta. Tomēr vismaz kopš 13. gs. imperatoriem piekrita no zemes lietām attālinātu virspriesteru loma, laicīgo valdīšanu atstājot visvareno militāro virsvadoņu – šogunu ziņā. Kā Marts Helme, tā viņa dēls Martins izteikušies, ka no Igaunijas sabiedriskās raidorganizācijas būtu jāatlaiž žurnālisti, kuri atļāvušies kritizēt viņu partiju. Inaugurācijas ceremonijā abi aplaimoja klātesošos ar žestu, kuru pēdējos gados saista ar balto rasisma idejām. Marta sākumā notikušajās Igaunijas parlamenta vēlēšanās pārliecinošākie panākumi bija liberālajai Reformu partijai ar Kaju Kallasu priekšgalā, taču vēlēšanu uzvarētājus no varas atstūma trīs citas partijas, izveidojot ideoloģiski savādu, acīmredzami tīrā varas loģikā balstītu koalīciju.

Christopher robin) Part 4: 5 years later 00:38:16 - 5 years later Capt. Marvel ผมสั้นแล้วตาม Comic) 00:51:55 - Antman มาที่ฐาน Avengers ก่อนไปหา Tony ด้วยกัน (Morgan ลูกสาวของ Tony นี่ก็มาจากชื่อของลุง Tony ที่อยู่ใน Comic, Dr Strange เคยบอก Pepper ว่า Tony จะตั้งชื่อลูกว่า Morgan ในภาค infinity war ด้วย) 00:58:10 - Tony ไม่เอาด้วยกับ Antman เลยไปหา Hulk แทน (Hulk ในภาคนี้จะกลายเป็น Professor hulk ซึ่งตัวละครตัวนี้ก็เลียนแบบจาก comic นั่นเอง ) 01:06:10 - Tony คุยกับลูก และ I love you 3000 (3000 ถ้าแบบง่ายๆเลยคือแต้ม เหมือนเรารักเธอ 3000 แต้ม แต่ถ้ามองอีกมุมนึง 3000 ก็คือ จำนวนนาทีของหนังใน MCU ทั้งหมดซึ่งจะรวมไปถึง Spiderman Far from home ด้วย และยังมีอีกทฤษฎีคือจำนวนรายได้ทั่วโลกที่ Avatar เคยทำได้คือเกือบ 3000ล้านดอลลาร์ และ Endgame ก็ทิ้งไว้ให้คิดเล่นๆว่าจะทำลายสถิตินี้ได้หรือไม่ ) 01:11:40 - Tony ยอมร่วมมือย้อนเวลา (Antman นั่งกินชวาล่า ชวาล่าจะมีอยู่ในทุกๆเกมของ Marvel และขนมตัวนี้จะใช้กินเพื่อเพิ่มพลังชีวิต) 01:15:20 - New Asgard (New asgard คือเมืองที่ Odin พ่อของ Thor ได้สลายร่างไป, และเมืองนี้ก็เคยเป็นเมืองที่เก็บ Tesseract ใน Capt. Raiders of the lost ark (1981) ที่กำกับโดย Jame Gunn) Part 5: The war 02:20:13 - กลับมาปัจุบันได้ gem ครบแล้ว (Thor อาสาดีดนิ้วเอาคนกลับ และบอกว่าเค้าคือ avenger ที่แข็งแกร่งสุด ซึ่งประโยคนี้เขาเคยพูดใน Thor Raknarok) 02:34:40 - Thanos บุกโลกพร้อมบวก (Capt. ได้ยินเสียงเรียกว่า On your left ของ Sam ซึ่งก็เป็นประโยคเดียวกับเรื่อง Winter soldier ที่ Capt.

In 2016, Emperor Akihito announced he intended to step down from the throne because of his age and declining health. Now, with just two weeks until Akihito’s son Naruhito becomes the country’s 126th emperor and with the name of the new Reiwa Era announced, Deep Dive asks: What does it mean to be Emperor of Japan, and what can we expect from the next person to sit atop the Chrysanthemum Throne? Sakura Murakami joins Oscar Boyd to discuss. We had a lot of fun finding early Showa Era songs that run in the breaks in this episode. In order they were: * "Southern Bride" by Meiko Takamine * "Koiwa Umibe De" by Mitsuko Watanabe * "Sendo Kawaiya" by Kikutaro Takahashi Thanks to Dr. Kenneth Ruoff, author of several books on Japan's Imperial Family, for contributing to this podcast.
On May 1st, Japan's current Emperor Akihito is set to abdicate. As every Japanese emperor reigns in his own specific era, the post-Akihito era has been named Reiwa, promising a period of order and harmony. So, what will the Reiwa Imperial Era spell for Japan? Will it be an era of order and peace as the name suggests? In this episode, we'll be joined by SAGE International Australia's Prof. Purnendra Jain, our resident expert on Japan and Northeast Asia to discuss these issues. Tónlist: Doris Day - Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que será, será).
No one knows what is the name of the new era. On Monday, it will be revealed to the public through the media. Japanese Calender used the names Meiji, Taisho, Showa, and Heisei last four eras. The Meiji (enlightened rule) era of 1868-1912 is remembered as a period of western-inspired modernisation; the Showa (enlightened harmony) era, which began in 1926, is closely associated with Japan's economic rise, but also with its role in the second world war. How was the Heisei? I was born in Heisei five years. Japan's economy was declining(or say stop growing). Whatever. The first year of Heisei, consumption tax started at 3%. A quarter-century passed. The tax rate was inclining to 8% under Abe's policy. Heisei means "achieving peace". When I was two years old baby, Great Hansin-Awaji earthquake happened, more than six thousands people died. Two months later, Tokyo subway sarin attack killed 12 people, over 6,000 people injured and still struggling. "Armageddon will happen, you will be saved within us." The terrorist's message was shown. In the past, emperors would change era names mid-reign to foster a spirit of renewal after natural disasters or crises; more recently, a single era has been used to mark the entirety of a monarch's time on the Chrysanthemum throne. I think that earthquake or terrorism could be the one chance to change the name of new era? Akihito is one of the main protags and he has a glasses fetish and this is mentioned and brought up at every point and it was a trope that was overplayed and they rely on to much. It had the potential to be a good story but the plot had too many unnecessary twists.

Denis Vrain-Lucas was an undistinguished forger until he met gullible collector Michel Chasles. Through the 1860s Lucas sold Chasles thousands of phony letters by everyone from Plato to Louis the 14th, earning thousands of francs and touching off a firestorm among confused scholars. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll trace the career of the world's most prolific forger. We'll also count Queen Elizabeth's eggs and puzzle over a destroyed car. The ANC, the political party of Nelson Mandela, has barely lost a vote since the end of apartheid in 1994. Now it has lost control of several districts in municipal elections, in what's being called a tipping point in the nation's political history. Bill Corcoran reports from Johannesburg. Akihito, Emperor of Japan, is not allow to comment on Japanese politics or laws - including the law that established his own position. Therefore it was tricky for him to let the nation know that he'd quite like to retire at the age of 82, says David McNeill in Tokyo. And here in our Dublin studio, Ruadhan Mac Cormaic explains how a new selection process for U.N. Secretary General allows potential replacements for Ban Ki-moon to get the message and drop out with dignity, if they lack support - but there's still room for plenty of politicking over the crucial appointment.

Elizabeth was a young Quaker girl who fell happily in love and got married in 1929. “Morgan Vining, my husband, swept my little boat out of the shallows into the sunlit depths of life's stream and we had almost five years together before, in a single moment, he was gone.” Car wrecks happen quickly. Elizabeth Vining was adrift. A line from the Breton Fisherman's Prayer said it best, “Oh Lord, your sea is so great and my boat is so small.” Elizabeth became a schoolteacher who in the evening wrote children's books. Her most popular title was Adam on the Road (1942). Then, at the end of World War Two, 43 year-old Elizabeth Vining got a call. General Douglas MacArthur had decided not to charge Japan's Emperor Hirohito with war crimes. Instead, he asked that Elizabeth Vining become the tutor of Crown Prince Akihito, the emperor's son. Elizabeth accepted. Upon her arrival in Japan, she encountered a lonely 12 year-old boy whose eyes sparkled with “a hidden sense of humor.” As crown prince, Akihito lived separately from his parents. He saw them only once a week, for a one-hour meal together. The next 4 years were filled with English lessons, games of Hide and Seek, Monopoly and stories of Abraham Lincoln. The seeds of independent thinking were planted. Risk orientation. Individual effort and reward. Breaking the rules. Thinking outside the box. These ideas were profoundly unJapanese. In 1950, Elizabeth Vining returned quietly to the United States since Akihito's mastery of English was nearly as good as her own. Akihito's farewell gift to Mrs. Vining was a poem, written in his best calligraphy, about the birds returning to the Akasaka Palace Gardens after the war. Soon after the departure of Mrs. Vining, young Akihito met beautiful Michiko on the tennis court. In 1959, he broke 2,600 years of Japanese tradition by marrying Michiko, a commoner. And a Quaker woman from America was the only foreigner allowed to attend the wedding. But Akihito wasn't finished surprising the world. All Japan was stunned when he and Michiko announced they would raise their own children. Another 2,600 year-old tradition, shattered by the 125th emperor of Japan. Akihito's attitude gave freedom to other Japanese to begin thinking independently as well. Honda, Sony, Toyota, Mitsubishi and their amazing fruits of innovation sprouted from a single seed, planted by a Quaker widow. Vining opened the door in 1946. Deming walked through it in 1950. Elizabeth Vining lived to be 97 years old. And each year on her birthday, with all the precision and dependability we have come to expect from Japan, a limousine from the Japanese embassy would stop in front of her home as a tuxedoed ambassador delivered a giant bouquet of flowers. A simple woman quietly did her best, a young boy had a change of heart, and a nation opened the doors of its mind. It would appear that a small boat is able to cross a great sea. Roy H. Williams
