Private Clients partner Theresa Balducci and corporate associate Adam Unger are joined by Matt Joyce, 14-year veteran of Major League Baseball and one-time Major League Baseball All-Star, to discuss issues faced by professional athletes in managing their personal finances. Matt shares his personal experiences, both during and after his tenure as a professional athlete. The podcast discusses how to engage in strategic financial planning and have a long-term mindset if you are in a position of coming into a significant amount of money. The podcast further discusses the importance of retaining and engaging reputable professionals, including a lawyer, investment manager and an accountant, particularly when considering potential investment opportunities. Theresa, Matt and Adam highlight that professional athletes, for whom risk-taking is the norm, need to consult with seasoned professionals to minimize potential risks in new investment opportunities and to draft documents critical for asset protection including a will, power of attorney, health care proxy and a pre-nuptial agreement. Theresa elaborates on how professional athletes can achieve their financial goals, including asset growth and protection and tax planning, at different life stages.Music by Michelangelo Sosnowitz

It seems like every day, a Private Client or subscriber to our newsletter asks me about El Salvador. I can't say I necessarily blame them; with everything Bukele has done, from turning around the violent crime situation to legalizing Bitcoin, there are plenty of reasons for expats to take an interest in the direction of this emerging Latin American country.  But having not been to El Salvador myself for twenty-some-odd years, I decided to take a long weekend trip down there to meet up with a few business contacts and check out how things had progressed since I had last hitchhiked through it as a much younger man. This episode is my full report from the trip and my thoughts on El Salvador's potential for expats.  TODAY'S EL SALVADOR TRIP REPORT: Hear about the good (I'm still thinking about the pupusas!), the bat (that's not a typo…), and the ugly of my hotel and Airbnb stays in El Salvador. Listen in for the inside scoop on some of the quite frankly terrible things I learned about El Salvador for expats, which mostly centers around the unfavourable tax situation. What about the visas? Tune in as I discuss all the available options for expats to live legally in El Salvador. Is Bukele really going to be giving out 5,000 “free passports,” as he proclaimed in a tweet? Hear what my El Salvadoran insiders had to say. How does the proposed $1 million “Freedom Visa” stack up to other regional citizenship-by-investment programs? Hear my thoughts on this pricey offer. What about company structures? I dissect whether El Salvador could be a viable option for forming offshore companies. How does El Salvador's banking system stack up to its neighbours? Discover what I learned about finance in the nation. Lastly, hear my final analysis of whether El Salvador could serve as a potential Plan-B destination for expats.  DON'T MISS THIS YEAR'S EXPAT MONEY SUMMIT! In this episode of the All Things Wildfire podcast, the host welcomes Heather Posner, Vice President of National Product Manager at Private Client in Burns and Wilcox. The host commends Heather's expertise, having attended one of her classes and observed her participation in webinars. They discuss Heather's extensive background, starting with Progressive Insurance in 1999 and later moving to AIG and Pure Insurance, focusing on high net worth individuals. Heather and the host delve into the current challenges in the insurance market, emphasizing the transition from a soft market to a hard market. They explain the concept of a hard market, where rates are high, competition is low, and capacity is limited. Heather emphasizes the need for individuals to adapt to the changing market conditions and discusses the emotional process clients and brokers go through as they adjust to the new reality. The conversation turns to the intricacies of the admitted and non-admitted markets. Heather provides insights into how admitted carriers must navigate state regulations and gain approval for their rates, while non-admitted carriers, like Burns and Wilcox, have more flexibility in crafting policies tailored to individual risks. The discussion touches on the challenges faced by carriers in a hard market, leading some to exit certain lines of business or states. Heather sheds light on the impact of recent severe weather events, supply chain issues, and the overall complexity of the insurance market. They discuss how brokers turn to wholesalers like Burns and Wilcox to find flexible solutions for their clients, particularly in high-risk areas such as California. The conversation also explores the role of risk management in mitigating potential losses and the ongoing efforts to strike a balance between profitability and providing coverage in wildfire-prone regions. The host raises the topic of risk management initiatives mandated by the California Department of Insurance to secure premium discounts. Heather expresses skepticism about the effectiveness of such measures in achieving long-term profitability for carriers, emphasizing the importance of educating clients on managing their risks to prevent claims. The episode concludes with a personal touch as Heather shares her own experience with a house fire during her childhood, highlighting the emotional and practical challenges that families face in the aftermath of such disasters. Highlights: Transition to a Hard Market: Heather Posner discusses the shift from a soft market to a hard market in the insurance industry, emphasizing the challenges posed by higher rates, reduced competition, and limited capacity. Admitted vs. Non-Admitted Markets: The conversation explores the differences between admitted and non-admitted insurance markets, revealing how regulatory constraints impact carriers in the former while non-admitted carriers, like Burns and Wilcox, have greater flexibility in tailoring policies to individual risks. Impact of Severe Weather and Supply Chain Issues: Heather provides insights into the broader challenges faced by the insurance market, including the impact of severe weather events, supply chain issues, and the complexity of adapting to changing market conditions.
