In this conversation, Sarah Boston and Janet McMordie discuss the challenges of balancing a whimsical career path with a day job. They explore the pressure to excel in one thing and the fear of losing edge in a profession. They also touch on the desire to be good at everything and the struggle of being mediocre at two things. The conversation highlights the importance of artists supporting other artists and the value of being a supportive audience. Sarah shares her excitement about her upcoming performance at the Guelph Fringe and discusses her podcast, Co-Medicine, which focuses on healthcare professionals who are involved in comedy.TakeawaysBalancing a whimsical career path with a day job can be challenging, but it's important to find a balance that allows for pursuing creative passions while also meeting practical needs. The pressure to excel in one thing and the fear of losing edge in a profession can create internal conflicts, but it's important to remember that it's possible to be good at multiple things.Being a supportive audience member and supporting other artists is crucial in the creative community. It's important to let go of jokes or ideas that don't work and to embrace failure as an opportunity for growth and learning.Dr. Boston's podcast: https://www.drsarahboston.com/comedicine-podcastWHAT ANOTHER FUN PODCAST? He became a star as Mechanic Lowell Mather on the sitcom “Wings,” was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in “Sideways” and has had supporting roles in films such as Tombstone, George of the Jungle, The Specials, and Demon Knight. Today, we talk about his new movie, Acidman. In the film, he plays Lloyd, a reclusive man who lives in in the middle of nowhere, and spends his time searching for UFOs. He is estranged from his daughter Maggie and has been given the nickname "Acidman" by the locals. One day his daughter arrives to pass along some important news and they attempt to make contact, with UFOs and each other. We'll also meet actor Melanie Scrofano. You know her from everything from the Crave comedy series Letterkenny and the comedy-drama series Being Erica, to the CTV fantasy-drama series The Listener and the Syfy modern Western drama Wynonna Earp. Today we talk about her latest movie, “The End of Sex.” Later in the show we'll meet author Justin Cronin. In 2010, novel “The Passage” became a phenomenon. The unforgettable tale that critics and readers compared to the novels of Cormac McCarthy, Michael Crichton, Stephen King, and Margaret Atwood became a runaway bestseller and loved by readers around the globe. His latest book, “The Ferryman” is a riveting standalone novel about a group of survivors on a hidden island utopia—where the truth isn't what it seems. No less an expert than Stephen King said, ““The Ferryman is next to impossible to put down once you've read the first few pages. Exciting, mysterious, and totally satisfying, this is a book to get lost in…”

For the first time in the show's history, we travel to South America to discuss Netflix's Brazilian series Back To 15. The time travel series features likeable actors and a fun, Being Erica-esque premise about fixing the mistakes of the past, though it maintains too tight a focus on Anita at the expense of its more interesting supporting cast.We talk about the odd North American critiques of the show, debate about what is "messy interesting" and Joe has some issues with the trans storyline. Actor Reagan Pasternak (HBO's "Sharp Objects," "Being Erica" and "CSI: Las Vegas") joined Doc and Leah to talk about the case. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell were vacationing in Hawaii when the question was asked, "Where are your kids?" The answer, authorities would later find out, was that the kids were in shallow graves on Daybell's property.  As more of the yarn was pulled, other mysterious deaths were linked to Vallow. Her ex-husband, Charles, was shot and killed by her brother, Alex Cox. Cox later died of a "blood clot." In the same city, Brandon Boudreaux was shot and killed in his own driveway from a car registered to Charles.  Vallow went on to marry Daybell after, surprise, surprise, Daybell's wife mysteriously died in her sleep.  Pasternak and the Chalk Team put the timeline together and try to make sense of the Mormon cult behind the murders.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Melissa Shapiro, DVM, is a veterinarian and lifelong animal welfare advocate. Since bringing Piglet home in 2017, she has used his social media platform to educate, advocate, and inspire others to adopt pets with special needs. Her nonprofit organization, Piglet International Inc, supports the Piglet Mindset Educational Outreach, as well as various animal rights causes. She lives in Connecticut with her husband Warren, six rescued dogs, three rescued birds, and Piglet, the deaf blind pink puppy. About the book: In the tradition of the beloved New York Times bestsellers Marley and Me and Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, a charming, inspirational memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn't hesitate to say, “yes.” Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink pup. Piglet weighed under two pounds upon his welcome into the Shapiro household—which included Melissa's husband Warren and their three college-aged kids, plus six other rescued dogs. After weeks of reassurance, and lots of love, Piglet connected, gained confidence, and his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa soon forged a powerful bond with Piglet, allowing the two to communicate without sound or visual cues. Curious, engaged, and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family. On this episode we have a very special guest. You may know Reagan Pasternak from her roles in Movies and TV shows (Wynona Earp, Sharp Objects, and Being Erica to name a few). Now she is taking on a new role, the role of Author. Reagan has written a book about mourning the loss of a pet. After a personal journey that she went through after losing her cat Griffin, Reagan was compelled to write about her experience in order to tell her story and to help people who are in the same situation. I found her book to be informative and a good read. Although I personally was not mourning the loss of a pet, I feel the concepts and strategies that she discusses in her book pertain to all types of grief. I hope you enjoy the episode. Hey firecrackers! This week I found myself confined to my hotel room in Halifax and the more time I spent in there, I realized how easily hotels can make you feel shut in. So, I decided to get out there and do something creative, something away from the computer, something outdoors! I went out, got some paints, a canvas, and taught myself to paint. I’m definitely no artist, haha, but it helped with the mundanity of hotel living! And I want to know, what is it you guys do to get yourselves out of rut? To feel inspired and creative? Let me know on social media! Our guest this week is the kick-ass, hilarious, Melanie Scrofano! She’s blowing up our television screens right now as the lead on ‘Wynonna Earp’, but you may also remember her from ‘Designated Survivor’ ‘The Listener’ or ‘Being Erica’. We recorded this episode a little while ago, while it was still hush-hush that she had a baby, so when she showed up with her little guy, it was an incredible surprise! We talked all about her family, her path as an actress, creativity and learning to do new things, and so much more. I think you guys are going to be inspired by this vibrant firecracker. Enjoy!

Listen in on our chat today with Jamie Dagg and Rossif Sutherland talking about their new film River, the Mekong and unintended consequences.   River opens March 13th – 2016. Read more about the film here and it’s World premiere at TIFF and check out it’s trailer here.     Synopsis – River   Accused of murder after intervening in the sexual assault of a young woman, an American volunteer doctor in Laos is forced to go on the run.   One of the most energetic thrillers produced this year; Jamie M. Dagg's debut feature River takes us on a frantic getaway in Laos, from the shores of the Mekong River, up to the mountains in the north.   John Lake (Rossif Sutherland) is an American volunteer doctor working for an NGO in a village in southern Laos. On his way home after an alcohol-soaked evening at a local bar, John intervenes in the sexual assault of a young woman, and the violence quickly escalates. The next day, the assailant's body is pulled out of the water.   All the evidence points to John, who recognizes the nightmare that awaits if he's captured by the local authorities, and realizes that his only hope is to reach the US Embassy. With no time to think and no one to count on, he goes on the run.   Shot and edited with vigour, and propelled by Sutherland's spot-on performance as a man fuelled by fear and guided only by instinct, River nevertheless goes beyond the thrill of the chase.   Addressing the incompatibility of different nations' judicial systems, the film raises the questions: Was John's vigilante action the right thing to do? And is escaping the right thing for him to do now?   Dagg's exceptional film manages to keep these issues present in our minds while remaining relentlessly on the move, creating a feverish crescendo that doesn't let up for one single minute.   Biography   Rossif Sutherland, an established performer in Music, Film and Television has developed an extensive resume.  Film credits include “Big Muddy” directed by Jefferson Moneo, “I’m Yours” opposite Karine Vanasse, Gary Yates’ feature film “High Life” opposite Timothy Olyphant and Joe Anderson for which received a Genie nomination, and the critically acclaimed Clement Virgo feature “Poor Boy’s Game” opposite Danny Glover all of which premiered The Toronto International Film Festival. Others include “Timeline”, a Paramount feature directed by Richard Donner as well as the independent feature film “Red Doors” directed by Georgia Lee. Most recently he just completed filming a supporting role in ‘Back Country’ opposite Joel Kinnaman and the starring role in ‘River’ directed by Jamie Dagg which shot in Laos.   In Television, Sutherland has had recurring guest spots on shows such as NBC’s “Crossing Lines” and BBCA’s “Copper” with other guest starring roles in TMN’s “Living In Your Car”; “Monk” and “Being Erica” and “Cracked” for CBC as well as a recurring role in season 10 of NBC’s hit show “ER”. He’s been series regular on Showcase’s “King” and the hit show “Reign” for the CW. When he’s not acting, he is busy recording his music.   Biography   Jamie Dagg was born in Timmins, Ontario, and is based in Toronto. His shorts Waiting (05) and Sunday (08) played the Festival.     See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Face2Face with David Peck

Don’t miss this interview as Rossif talks about his move into acting, why he’s a storyteller at heart and why he feels “we’re all in this together.”Check out the quote from him below in a recent Toronto Sun article by Jane Stevenson.“I don’t mean to be existential or anything, but we find ourselves in this world with all these questions and so few answers and then we try and educate these beautiful children of ours and we try and guide them through one generation to another, we adopt whatever mistakes the previous generation has made. There’s a whole cycle to it all. This war, and this constant answer of correcting a wrong with another wrong. I hope one day…we get to accept each other and celebrate each others differences and in those differences realize how we are one and the same.”Film SynopsisTrailer here.IMDB here. Paul Gross (Passchendaele) directs and co-stars in this taut war drama about Canadian troops in Afghanistan weathering Taliban attacks while struggling to complete construction on a crucial highway link.Writer-director-star Paul Gross’ new film portrays the heroic duties undertaken by Canadian armed forces in Afghanistan with the same gut-wrenching immediacy that Gross brought to the blood-soaked Belgian battlefields of World War I in his epic Passchendaele. Hyena Road is a masterful examination of modern warfare that drops viewers straight into the belly of the beast.Depicting an embattled Canadian- American initiative to increase safe transport across Afghanistan, Hyena Road is a group portrait of men and women at work in a dangerous and often confounding conflict zone.We meet a sniper (Rossif Sutherland who becomes precariously implicated in the life of one of his targets — as well as the life of an alluring colleague (Christine Horne). There’s an intelligence officer whose customary world-weary wisecracks — “Even the dirt is hostile” — veil a fundamental belief in the ethics of war.And the film introduces us to a legendary former mujahid known as The Ghost (Neamat Arghandabi) who, for mysterious reasons, is lured back into the battle zone to assist the Canadian forces. All these characters’ trajectories collide in ways that illustrate the triumphs and frustrations that occur amid the moral uncertainty of war. Alternating between relatively tranquil scenes of life at the base and adrenalized sequences that thrust us into the heat of battle, Gross orchestrates a cinematic symphony of soldiering: the highs and lows, the brotherhood and barbarity.Hyena Road does what great war movies can do: it carefully examines the plight of a few so as to speak to the experience of many.BiographyRossif Sutherland, an established performer in Music, Film and Television has developed an extensive resume.Film credits include “Big Muddy” directed by Jefferson Moneo, “I’m Yours” opposite Karine Vanasse, Gary Yates’ feature film “High Life” opposite Timothy Olyphant and Joe Anderson for which received a Genie nomination, and the critically acclaimed Clement Virgo feature “Poor Boy’s Game” opposite Danny Glover all of which premiered The Toronto International Film Festival.
