South Africa's Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) expects to appoint a developer within months for the common-user infrastructure required to support the proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at the Port of Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal. In January, the State-owned company announced that it had selected a consortium comprising Vopak and Transnet Pipelines to design, develop, construct, finance, operate, and maintain an LNG terminal in the South Dunes Precinct at the deep-water port for a period of 25 years. In parallel, TNPA was evaluating bids for a service provider to complete detailed engineering, design and construction of the marine infrastructure, gas transmission pipeline and bulk services required to operate the LNG terminal and to link it to a dedicated LNG berth able to accommodate a floating storage regasification unit. The request for proposals (RFP) closed on November 20 and TNPA is targeting to make the appointment during March. The developer will carry out the construction of marine structures such as berths, bollards, fenders, pipe racks and bund walls as well as the development of a gas transmission pipeline for handling LNG imports and bulk services infrastructure. The project, together with the terminal itself, has been described as one of two catalytic projects already under way within TNPA's Eastern Region, which incorporates the ports of Durban and Richards Bay. At the Port of Durban, meanwhile, TNPA anticipates appointing a service provider for the detailed design and commissioning of berth infrastructure works of the Point Container Terminal Marine Infrastructure and Bulk Services project by April. The project seeks to expand the terminal's capacity from 0.2-million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 1.8-million TEUs. During a recent stakeholder engagement held at the Port of Durban, TNPA portfolio director Dr Bridgette Gasa-Toboti indicated that the two projects were in line with the goals of accommodating larger container vessels and meeting the country's new energy requirements. She indicated that they were part of a broader project pipeline that included short-, medium- and long-term projects, with the projects earmarked for implementation between 2024 and 2029 collectively valued at R11-billion. Besides the LNG and Point Container Terminal, the project pipeline also encompasses the deepening and lengthening of berths 203, 204 and 205 at the Pier 2 Durban Container Terminal. The RFP for a multibillion-rand main marine construction works package will close on April 19, with constructure currently scheduled to begin between August and December 2024. The project will result in a berth length increase from 914 m to 1 210 m to safely accommodate the simultaneous berthing of three Super Post Panamax vessels 350 m in length and with a draft of 14.5 m. A service provider had also been appointed in January to undertake prefeasibility studies for both the Base and Satellite Stations to enable the construction of the South African Navy Base project at the Port of Richards Bay.

Platinum remains in fundamental deficit - Northam

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Platinum remains in fundamental deficit, Northam CEO Paul Dunne emphasised at the company's presentation on Friday, which reported a strong performance from all group operations in the six months to December 31. "In mining terms, it's a slow-burning fuse. Ultimately, we will see a price response to this picture," said Dunne, as he displayed a visual diagram indicating the downward outlook for platinum supply. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) He outlined how palladium-dominant mines are often combined with significant nickel production and the weakening nickel price is further eroding profitability. Previously forecast increases in palladium supply were dependent on projects that are now unlikely to be pursued and flat-to-waning supply is expected over the medium term. Rhodium is expected to follow the depletion profile of South Africa's upper group two (UG2) mines, leading potentially to significant under supply of what is a critical metal that is poised to return to deficit "quite quickly". The current price environment may last for some time and this combined with general higher inflation will pressurise the sector and it is clear that the current market conditions cannot sustain supply, Dunne said as he displayed a margin chart during the presentation covered by Mining Weekly. "Not all orebodies are created equal and, in this market, we would suggest that South African UG2, with its higher loading of platinum, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium and chrome, is strategically well-positioned for a future-facing market. "At Northam, we have a UG2-dominat resource base, which is very well capitalised, and this places us in a strong position. "Once again, safe production, efficient project execution, efficient mining, and a very firm grip on the cheque book, will ensure that we mine at the best possible cost," said the CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed Northam, which declared R1-a-share interim dividend on the back of its cash and cash equivalents of R11.8-billion and available undrawn banking facilities of R11-billion collectively amounting to R22.8-billion. At the outset, Dunne drew attention to the picture of iridium chloride that featured in its presentation. Iridium chloride is critical to the production of green hydrogen. "Iridium is one of the rarest elements on the planet and because of the many colours of its various compounds, was named after Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow. "Iridium, together with ruthenium, were historically considered the minor metals but their importance is growing and together these contributed over 11% of Northam's R15-billion revenue for this six-month reporting period. NEW SHAFT The equipping of the new Zondereinde 3 Shaft has been completed to 500 m. Full equipping at 1 400 m and commissioning of the shaft, along with the 3A ventilation shaft, is scheduled for May 2025, at which time a combination of greatly reduced travel time for employees and improved hydropower and backfill pressure on the face, will significantly derisk mining. "The pace at which we've been able to progress the 3 Shaft project we believe is impressive, given that we only stated piloting in September 2029 and we expect commissioning four-and-a-half-years later than that at a fraction of the cost of a conventionally developed shaft. "The addition of 3 Shaft will allow us to mine this exceptional orebody well into the future," Dunne highlighted. Cost control measures in the period kept the increase in group unit cash cost per equivalent refined four element (4E) ounce at 6.7% amid a 10.6% increase in equivalent refined 4E ounce metal from its own operations to 434 977 oz in the six-month period, when production reached record levels.

Implats expecting phased reduction in group output

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. A phased reduction in group output owing to a probable decline in production from Impala Canada and Mimosa in Zimbabwe is likely from platinum group metals (PGMs) mining and marketing company Implats, which on Thursday reported lower group profitability, despite disciplined cost control and solid production across several operations. The odds-on decline in production amounts to roughly 8% of the production guidance of the 2024 financial year to June 30. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Group six-element, or 6E, refined and saleable production is expected to be between 3.30-million ounces and 3.45-million ounces for the 50-year-old, 67 900-employee Implats, which has eight operations in three countries. On top of that, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed Implats is looking at previously planned expansion of 210 000 oz potentially not happening. "Put together, it equates to roughly 14% of our internally planned production," Implats CEO Nico Muller said during an in-person and virtual presentation of results covered by Mining Weekly. The group generated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of R8.4-billion, headline earnings of R3.3-billion or 365c a share, and recorded a free cash outflow of R4.8-billion, after funding capital expenditure (capex) of R6.8-billion. Guidance set in September remains the same other than the capex guidance, which has been reduced to between R11-billion and R12-billion from R12.5-billion to R13.5-billion. Implats is pulling in its horns amid the price determination of PGMs not correlating to market fundamentals but being influenced by the marginal buyer that buys metal in a market where there is an abundant amount of metal available on surface. In the bargain, too, is the global economy's super inflation and interest rate pressure on reserve banks and central banks, factors that have lowered the global economic growth rate. "Even now it is evident if you look at the Purchasing Managers' Index, particularly for manufacturing, in most of the economies that use our products, you will see that the PMI is just over 50, which indicates that there is going to be contraction in the growth rate of that particular economy and at the moment it is just hovering above 50, so it indicates a fairly low expectation of economic growth in those jurisdictions. "When you have this very bearish sentiment on the global economic growth rate, it tends to have a negative impact on commodities. "It's not only the PGMs market but we've seen a downward trend in battery metals prices as well," said Muller. On top of that, there are elections in 64 countries, conflicts in Ukraine, Palestine and potentially Taiwan and all of these are creating uncertainty. "Therefore, if you are a manufacturer and you consume our products, there's been a trend of destocking. We saw it in the fibreglass industry and autos. "Even on the back of fairly positive automotive sales last year, we have not seen an immediate price response. "There is general consensus across the market that we cannot expect a rapid price recovery any time soon given the fact that it's tied to what's happening across the globe with macro factors," Muller said. The Implats basket price declined by 32% mainly on palladium's 41% fall as well as the drop in the price of rhodium, despite a really solid fundamental operating performance across all of the group's operations, bar one. "But notwithstanding that performance, and I'm talking of production of ounces as well as cost containment, we're going to see that our revenue declined by 25% and we'll see the downward trend in cash flow. "This is necessitating a strong strategic response from the company and it cannot just involve marginal improvements in productivity and cost optimisation at the operations," he said. The tide has turned and while fundamental demand for primary products remains robust, current pri...

DA on a mission to 'rescue' KZN by replicating uMngeni approach - Steenhuisen

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen is confident that the "remarkable" turnaround happening in KwaZulu-Natal's (KZN's) uMngeni municipality could be replicated province-wide, if KZN voters install a Multi-Party Charter government in 2024. Steenhuisen wrote in his weekly letter on Friday that having borne the brunt of the African National Congress's "failure" during the July riots of 2021, KZN looks set to "rise from the ashes" next year. He highlighted that uMngeni municipality has quickly become a shining beacon of hope and success in this "deeply troubled province". "Its trajectory of progress began when the people of uMngeni elected KZN's very first DA mayor in 2021 by a margin of just 46 votes, showing Springbok-style, that every point counts. uMngeni's success is not due to one person or factor, but rather to consistent effort and commitment by a well-led group of diverse South Africans working together for the greater good," he said. uMngeni Mayor Chris Pappas is the DA's Premier candidate for KZN. "Our '1+1=WIN' campaign is targeted at getting every single DA supporter to play their part, by persuading and assisting one unregistered person they know, to register and vote DA," Steenhuisen said. He highlighted the service delivery pact signed by the DA and Inkatha Freedom Party earlier this year, and said the parties are the two largest in the Multi-Party Charter that has united eight political parties around a common vision and set of priorities for rescuing South Africa. Steenhuisen explained that on taking office, uMngeni's youthful team, led by Pappas and DA Deputy Mayor Sandile Mnikathi, rolled up their sleeves and got down to work cleaning up the streets, fixing infrastructure, and igniting the economy of the Midlands municipality. In just two years, all uMngeni's inherited debt had been paid off and it achieved an unqualified audit for 2022/23, by modernising the systems of the municipality to improve efficiency and limit corruption, he explained. Steenhuisen added that this financial health had enabled the party to purchase R35-million worth of heavy equipment to fix roads and manage waste, and to triple the budget for road repairs from R11-million to R30-million. To make communities safer, the DA opened a traffic office and vehicle pound, and purchased 6 new law enforcement vehicles. "They understand keenly that this is the consistent, concerted action required to build people's confidence in the future, which in turn spurs the investment and job creation needed to grow dignity and improve lives," said Steenhuisen.

¡Vaya lio! ¿O no? ¿Me he olvidado de alguno? Espero vuestros comentarios . Y en un próximo vídeo, los F1. Coche del día. Cualquiera me valdría.

Moreover, the unbundling will be implemented on the basis that Barloworld ordinary shareholders recorded on the Barloworld share register at 17:00 on December 15 will receive one Zeda distribution share for every one Barloworld ordinary share held. Barloworld explains the pro rata distribution in specie of the Zeda distribution shares will be paid from sources other than 'contributed tax capital' as contemplated in the Income Tax Act and shall accordingly constitute a 'dividend' for purposes of the Income Tax Act. RATIONALE Barloworld is actively pivoting its portfolio towards defensive, relatively asset-light and cash generative industrial sectors, based on a business-to-business operating model. To this end, Barloworld has divested several businesses identified as noncore to its strategic ambition. The board believes that, to separate the business of Zeda through an unbundling will enable Zeda to execute on its own strategy and allow it to operate in a more focused and efficient manner, unshackled by the umbrella of Barloworld's capital allocation framework. Additionally, the Barloworld board says Zeda will benefit from a fully dedicated executive management team and its own dedicated board of directors. It is expected that the unbundling of Zeda will position it as a distinct sub-Saharan Africa-focused integrated mobility solutions providers and provide enhanced governance, cost of capital and ability to drive a market-leading return profile. For Barloworld, the unbundling marks the completion of its noncore divestiture programme, allows the group to focus on its consumer industries and industrial equipment pillars, and delivers deleveraging of the balance sheet. FINANCIAL RESULTS Barloworld has posted an increase of 48.2% in headline earnings a share to R17.71 for the year ended September 30, from R11.95 (restated) in the prior financial year. Basic earnings per share (EPS) amounted to R10.51 in the reporting year, compared with basic EPS of R13.90 (restated) posted in the prior year. The group's operating profit from core trading activities increased by 12.8% in the year under review to R3.7-billion, from R3.2-billion in the prior year. Barloworld has declared an ordinary final dividend of 295c apiece for the second half of the year, bringing the total dividend to 460c apiece, and a special dividend of 550c apiece. This compares with total ordinary and special dividends of 437c and R13.50 declared in the prior year, respectively. CEO Dominic Sewala says the group delivered improved results despite some key challenges in the prevailing operating environment, He anticipates headwinds in the short term resulting from the effects of high inflation; however, the Equipment Southern Africa business is well positioned to achieve sustainable growth in the long term, driven by the need for infrastructure development and increased mining activity to support the energy transition to zero-carbon emissions. Barloworld says it continues to manage exposures and risks to its Equipment Eurasia business including a strong focus on addressing the needs of employees through a very uncertain and challenging period, while remaining agile and adaptable to ensure compliance with an ever-changing regulatory environment. Sewala confirms the company has started with cost-reducing measures and right-sizing working capital, in line with some expect...

Harmony Gold Mining Company's disaggregated Tshepong North and Tshepong South gold mines stole the proverbial show by both delivering strong operational performances in the three months to the end of September. The two Free State mines provided 37% of group operating free cash flow and drove much of the improvement in Harmony's optimised underground South African portfolio. Owing to better recovered grades, Tshepong North's operating free cash flow margin improved to 11% this quarter from -13% in the last quarter of the financial year to June 30, while Tshepong South's operating free cash flow margins improved to 22% from 9%, with the two mines together bringing in R314-million of free cash. In fact, it was the South African underground and surface operations that did it for Harmony this quarter, when production from its international segment slumped 28% to 32 537 oz. As a rand-cost producer, the gold price received continued to move in Harmony's favour, increasing 1% to R954 916/kg from R944 671/kg in the previous quarter, resulting in a 1% increase in gold revenue to R11 226-million. Collectively, improved performances at South African high-grade and South African optimised underground operations resulted in a 17%-higher total group operating free cash flow to R857-million. Adjusting for the closure of the Bambanani gold mine, the remaining South African underground production increased by 2% to 8 467 kg (272 219 oz), supported by a 1% increase in underground recovered grades to 5.35 g/t. Production at the South African surface operations increased 4% to 1 917 kg (61 634 oz) on the improved performance of Mine Waste Solutions. The loss from electricity loadshedding was 100 kg (3 215 oz) this quarter, the Johannesburg- and New York-listed company stated in a release to Mining Weekly on November 17. The free cash flow contribution of R407-million from the high-grade Mponeng and Moab Khotsong gold mines represented 48% of total group operating free cash flow, with Hidden Valley in Papua New Guinea generating R82-million. Group all-in sustaining costs increased by 5% to R907 864/kg ($1 657/oz) mainly from lower production at Hidden Valley, Kusasalethu and Target 1. Net debt to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation increased to 0.26 times in this quarter from 0.1 times in the previous quarter on currency translation and working capital movements. Net debt increased to R2 070-million from R731-million. A 1.4-million- to 1.5-million-ounce gold producer with near-term copper prospects, Harmony remains on track to meet cost, grade and production guidance. Continued focus is placed on delivering safe production and value creation through execution and productivity initiatives. To boost its copper footprint, Harmony last month announced the acquisition of Eva Copper in Australia. Alongside the Wafi-Golpu project in Papua New Guinea, this investment introduces near-term copper into the portfolio. For four consecutive quarters, the lost-time injury frequency rate has been trending below 6. This quarter it is at 5.58.

A deadline of the end of October has been set for the signing of power purchase and implementation agreements by the remaining 22 Bid Window Five (BW5) renewables projects, following the conclusion of the first such agreements with three wind projects, with a combined capacity of 420 MW and a combined investment value of R11-billion. IPP Office head Bernard Magoro reported on Thursday that all BW5 preferred bidders had now secured grid-connection Budget Quotes from Eskom, the absence of which had delayed the conclusion of the round from an initial deadline of April, and that “the next step is to now sign the agreements”. “It did take long to get these three project agreements concluded . . . but the base agreements that have emerged should make the process much easier for the remaining 22 projects. “So, we are ready for other projects to come forward and to sign by the end of October,” Magoro said at an event in Centurion, Gauteng, where wind project agreements were signed with EDF and black empowerment partner Gibb-Crede, including power purchase agreements with Eskom. “Given the current load-shedding, there is really no reason to delay and there will be other wind bid windows. “So, if you miss this bus, there is another bid window that's coming,” he added, indicating that the IPP Office was prepared to move forward from the round even if some projects failed to conclude agreements. Likewise, he indicated that the deadline for the signing of project agreements for the remaining Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) preferred bidders, including the three power ship projects, had also been set for the end of October. “We have been looking at a few bid-optimisation requests that we received from the preferred bidders . . . and we have secured legal opinion on those so that the process is not compromised. “That, too, has been finalised and we now want to conclude both programmes [BW5 and RMIPPPP] by the end of October.” BATTERY STORAGE BID WINDOW Magoro also announced that a battery storage bidding round would be launched on September 30 and that bid submissions under BW6 of the renewables programme, which had been expanded from 2 600 MW to 4 200 MW, were anticipated on October 3. Lessons, he said, had been learnt from the BW5 delays, which had been extensive, with preferred bidders having been identified in October last year following the launch of the bid window in April last year. The projects were initially anticipated to reach financial close by the end of April this year, but when that deadline was missed, a staggered close process was announced for the end of July and the end of September. The initial three wind projects have been given 60 days to achieve financial close, while those that sign their project agreements at the end of October are likely to be given until the end of the year to progress to financial close. Most of the delays have related to securing Budget Quotes for access to the Eskom grid. To overcome those delays, Eskom's Grid Access Unit had been beefed up and BW6 bidders had been instructed to secure cost estimate letters (CELs) from the unit before submitting a project bid. Eskom transmission group executives Segomoco Scheppers reported that the Grid Access Unit had issued CELs to prospective BW6 bidders relating to projects with a potential capacity of 32 000 MW. He said the market had also been informed of Eskom's grid constraints, particularly in the Cape provinces, as well as to where residual capacity remained through the publication of the Generation Connection Capacity Assessment. Additional information regarding available grid capacity would be released when the utility published its latest Transmission Development Plan at the end of October. Coches incomprendidos: Renault 14.

A mí, mucho.

If you secretly hate us but haven't been able to find a different source of financial information, I have some great news! I found a Freakonomics Radio episode that summed up exactly the principles we champion on this show. In this episode, Simon and I take the financial literacy survey. It's only three questions, but understanding their answers will enable you to make great financial decisions. If this sounds vaguely familiar, you might be thinking of this podcast we did last year. Here are the questions: Suppose you have R100 in a savings account and the interest rate was 2% per year. After 5 years, how much do you think you would have in the account if you left the money to grow? More than R102 Exactly R102 Less than R102 Imagine that the interest rate on your savings account was 5% per year and inflation was 6% per year. After one year, how much would you be able to buy with the money in this account? More than today. Exactly the same as today. Less than today. Do you think the following statement is true or false: buying a single company stock usually provides a safer return than a collective investment scheme like an ETF or unit trust. Win of the week: Rob has been coming to our events for ages. He has some ETF investments, but he's been wanting to trade since the day I met him. This week, he sent this email: Yes I have done my first trade and  bought my first bunch of shares (7 shares in total - some bits and bobs) (as oppose to ETFs) I am not sure how I am supposed to feel! Its bit like sex for the first time - did not know what to expect! Frederick My world has been turned upside down! I started listening to your podcast a week or so ago, and fok... my google is broken!! From googling sport all day I now spend endless nights and have sleepless nights on where to put my money and avoid tax as much as possible! I use to think money is money and my RA is perfect and that life is sorted! I was wrong! I have an RA (diversified wealth builder) with Sanlam. Any thoughts here please?
