Doug saw The Odyssey on opening weekend. Justin saw it the following Wednesday in IMAX 70mm. They both walked out saying the same thing: that is cinema at its finest. The full review is here. Justin's IMAX 70mm experience gets the full breakdown first. Every frame deliberately composed, the sheer amount of visual information on screen, the walk back to see the giant film spools running the projector. Then the film itself: what Nolan got right about scale, spectacle, and practical effects. The Cyclops was built using a combination of a massive puppet for the actors to work around and a real actor in full prosthetics and makeup on a scaled-down set, composited together the old-school way. The giants were played by actual seven-foot-tall people standing next to a stunt double under five feet tall. No CGI shortcut. No painted-in crowd. A thousand extras on the day they shot the Land of the Dead. Jon Bernthal in the water for half a day, approaching hypothermia, refusing to come out until they had the shot. Also in this episode: a significant announcement. Mind Gap Podcast is ending at Episode 550. Doug and Justin have been at this for eleven years and have decided Episode 550 is the right place to close the chapter. The Discord will remain active. The community is not going anywhere. But the podcast wraps in a few episodes. They discuss what the community has meant to them and why finding that group of people has been one of the best things to come out of eleven years of doing this. Before all that: at what age do you stop using familial titles like aunt and uncle? Doug does not have aunts, uncles, grandparents, or cousins, so the answer for him is immediate. Justin is forty-three and still says Uncle Mike. Also: Hooters is examined as a business model in the current era and found to be of questionable viability. Then: a deep dive into the Book of the Dead LitRPG series by RynoZ, which Doug is now three books into and cannot stop recommending. The world-building concept is that at age eighteen you put your hand on a stone and get assigned your permanent class, whether that is a farmer, a bard, an accountant, or a banned necromancer on the run from the government. This leads to a conversation about what class each host would want to be awakened into. Doug says cook. Justin says Urban Explorer, which is not a real class in the book but seems accurate. The Urban Dictionary game returns. This round covers Mickey Mousing, Eternity Leave, Werewolf's Dick, and Ottawa Spaghetti. Justin gets closer than expected on most of them. Ottawa Spaghetti takes a turn. This week's recommendations: Justin: The Odyssey. See it in the theater. See it in IMAX if you can. When it comes home it will still be great but feel it on a big screen first. Doug: Monsters Are Coming on Steam. Tower defense slash vampire survivors hybrid. Four dollars on sale. Highly addictive. Do not sleep on it. Our San Diego Comic-Con 2026 adventure was packed with Star Wars trivia, fashion, science, and plenty of Schwartz! We hosted a high-energy Star Wars Trivia Party for more than 100 fans, followed by an autograph session and Pop-Up Trivia event celebrating our upcoming book, So You Think You Know Star Wars: 50 Years of Trivia & Fun Facts. The response was incredible—the line grew so large that volunteers and security were called in to help manage the crowd! We also share highlights from: The Spaceballs: The New One panel: Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Kevin Smith The DC-themed Her Universe Fashion Show hosted by Ashley Eckstein and Michael James Scott Mission Control's interactive STEAM activities, co-hosted by our very own Star Warsologies An amazing handmade gift from Jeff Caffrey (Virtual Cantina Network) A huge thank-you to James, Julie, Bryn, Nick, Dani, and everyone who helped make our SDCC events such a success! Coming next week: our long-awaited interview with Star Wars composers Kevin, Sean, and Deana Kiner (The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, Ahsoka), plus conversations with the composers behind Spider-Noir, Supergirl, Bridgerton, and more. In this episode, hosts Dirk Knemeyer and David Heron sit down with Jake Birkett, the veteran indie developer behind Grey Alien Games. Jake is perhaps most famously known in the industry for his "No-Hit Wonder" philosophy—a survival strategy that has allowed him to thrive as a full-time indie developer for over 20 years without relying on a single "mega-hit". The conversation explores the fascinating evolution of Jake's career, from his early days creating seasonal match-3 games like Spooky Bonus to his recent breakthrough with the FMV horror-themed Forbidden Solitaire. We delve into the "Birkett Ratio," a proprietary metric for predicting Steam sales, and discuss the pragmatic reality of the 2026 indie market.

Even AP Thompson's simplified description of "a match-3 tower defense game for people who like to read" still hides a mountain of detail, so this was a fun discussion about those component parts and especially how they tie together into a genuinely interesting narrative and commentary on the way we play games and "consume" media in general. Palworld just did something almost no Early Access game manages — it actually finished. Roughly a quarter of Early Access games on Steam ever reach a full release, and Pocketpair's 60-person team crossed the line with a doubled map, a reworked progression system, and no price increase for existing owners. We dig into why the survival-crafting, creature-collecting, base-automation mashup works when it shouldn't, and whether 1.0 is a "come back" moment or a "start fresh" commitment that busy players should think twice about. Then it's Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, where the critics and the players are pointing in opposite directions. Reviews landed lukewarm while it sold two million copies in a day and set a franchise record for concurrent players on Steam. We make the case that the "inessential remake" take misses what's actually great here: a vast Caribbean built out of bite-sized islands packed with Legendary Ships, Mayan Stelae, caves, and underwater wrecks — a structure that respects a player working with 45-minute windows instead of full weekends. Community developer Zac joins us to talk about Garden College, the top-down RPG he's building, and what running and participating in game jams has taught him that solo project work never could. And we return to Sony's disc decision from a completely different angle — not the ownership debate we already had, but the dependency stack underneath it. PSN's July outage was reportedly tied to the same AWS infrastructure that delayed patient care and grounded travelers last October. Halo buyers who paid extra for early access couldn't launch a single-player campaign because login servers were overloaded. One man lost 25 years of purchased games to a hack and only got them back after his post went viral. The through line: how many companies have to be having a good day for you to play something you already paid for? Branz Nutrition registered dietician Michelle Wilson says the new 'Boy Kibble' trend gives eaters 'more control' of what's going in their bodies. She says the limit to the meals is the lack of some fat, which is essential to diets. The bowls take advantage of meat and rice paired together, which are homemade. She says it can be a 'really good bridge,' for people getting into cooking their own meals.

It's a potpourri episode this week, as we combined our "what we've been playing" session with some casual chat we had on air during last stream's recording. So, it's a good mix of game impressions, movie talk, and answering a great question about what we want to see developers of beloved series try to do next.
