Today's tale of pentest pwnage isn't a start-to-finish march to DA – it's me finally emptying out the backlog of "gosh, I've got to share this next time" internal network tips that have been rattling around in my head. Here's what we get into: Don't skip the boring stuff. Even when I'm testing the same network for the third or fourth time, I've got an ever-growing list of things I check every single time – because config drift has a nasty habit of quietly reintroducing problems that were fixed years ago. Get a second opinion on your tools. Lately I've had BloodHound tell me a network is squeaky clean, and then gone and checked manually only to find the exact opposite sprawled all over the place. I don't know how to account for it, but it's changed how I work. (If you know the source of truth here, please write in!) Ghost machines. That innocent little checkbox in Active Directory that turns a computer object into a gift-wrapped present for an attacker. We keep finding these in environments that had zero of them last year – and I share the two-pass trick that shakes even more of them loose. The weekend freebie. Why I like to get my box lit up on a Friday even when the test doesn't officially start until Monday, and what tends to come wandering into my capture over 48 quiet hours. SNMP sweeps. I've never been caught doing one, and yet they'll happily hand over the make, model and firmware of some firewalls, switches and storage systems in the building. I think this finding deserves way more attention than it gets. (There are a few little commandlets waiting for you over at 7MinSec.wiki.) Be a consultant, not a Terminator 1000. Why I run certain checks even when I'm 99% sure I'll find nothing, why "you don't have this thing at all" belongs in the accolades section, and how that one habit has led to some of the most appreciated conversations we've had in report delivery meetings. Tangent department: the dumb-but-glorious AI project that gave me the giggidies – a fully automated lobby bot for a Steam game that is absolutely, positively not for the kiddos. Once upon a time, there was a girl who soared and swooped through the sky. Her name is Thokozile Muwamba. In 2017, at age 24, Thokozile Muwamba broke barriers by becoming Zambia's first female fighter pilot. Today, she continues to soar through the sky and is also an outspoken advocate against cyberbullying. [This episode originally aired September 2021]. About the Narrator Refilwe Ledwaba is a social entrepreneur, an advocate of girl's education especially Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) education. She spent 10 years in the South African Police Services (SAPS) as a Helicopter Pilot, the first black woman to do so. She is also a qualified fixed-wing Pilot and Flight instructor ,a qualified Drone Pilot and currently training as a Drone Pilot instructor. She is passionate about youth development in Africa, particularly the empowerment of girls. She is the founder of Girls fly programme in Africa (GFPA) foundation, an information and educational STEAM programme for primary, high school and Post-school learners with a focus on aviation and space. She studies why anti-racist professional development in schools so often fails to change how teachers actually treat students — and what works instead. Dr Abby C. Emerson is an assistant professor of Childhood Education at Hunter College, CUNY, where her research spans anti-racist and abolitionist teacher education, restorative justice, and the critique of whiteness in educational spaces. She's been named National Association for Multicultural Education's Critical Teacher of the Year, and this fall she releases her book, From Anti-Racism to Professional Learning for Liberating Schools, with Harvard Education Press. Most schools running anti-racist professional development hit the same wall: teachers learn the theory, reflect on their own bias, update a unit — and the discipline data doesn't move. Dr. Abby C. Preparing ahead of time allows you to enjoy that abundance rather than scrambling to figure out what to do with it. • What is the biggest mistake people make when harvest season begins?Not being prepared. Wendi recommends having your preservation equipment, jars, lids, and other supplies ready before the large harvest arrives. • What is a simple way to preserve tomatoes before the harvest gets really large?Wash the tomatoes, place them in bags, and freeze them whole. As the harvest grows, the frozen tomatoes can later be taken out and canned. • Why does tomato canning require added acid?The discussion explains that modern tomato varieties may not be acidic enough for safe water-bath canning without additional acid. Lemon juice is discussed as a way to increase acidity when canning tomatoes. • What is the difference between water-bath and pressure canning?Water-bath canning uses boiling water and is intended for sufficiently acidic foods. Pressure canning reaches temperatures above the boiling point of water and is used for lower-acid foods such as meats and vegetables. • What can you do with tomato water from a steam juicer?Instead of throwing it away, Wendi cans tomato water and uses it in stews, goulash, chili, and for cooking pasta. • What are some ways to use tomato powder?Dehydrated tomatoes can be blended into powder and used to thicken spaghetti sauce, flavor broths, add to roasts, make tomato paste or sauce, create spice blends, and make tomato soup. • How can you preserve a large zucchini harvest?Zucchini can be shredded, have its excess water removed, and frozen.
