The Voice of Insurance

Today's Episode is exceptional because in terms of his seniority and the sheer size and global nature of his role, my guest is in a very small peer group. Chris Williams is Chairman of International Business at the Tokio Marine Group and that means he helps oversee a business with a $75bn dollar balance sheet and 44,000 employees, operating in over 40 countries. Only a handful of my guests on this show in the last five years have a role of such global depth and breadth. An Australian who has worked in London and spent most of his career in the US, Chris is very much a model citizen of the global specialist insurance and reinsurance world that this podcast looks to serve. In the past twenty years Tokio Marine Group has embarked on a highly successful internationalisation strategy that has entailed multiple blue-chip acquisitions in countries all over the world. This has turned it from a dominant Japanese insurer with only around 3% of earnings coming from overseas into a global force that already makes around 75% of its earnings outside of Japan, with that proportion almost certain to continue growing over time. Chris joined the group through its 2015 acquisition of HCC so in many ways is the personal embodiment of this strategy. This podcast is a great distillation of that Tokio global plan and where it may be heading next, but it's also a chance to pick the brains of an industry veteran who can combine a fifty-year career with a genuinely global overview. Chris's views on the rise of MGAs, the prospects for renewed M&A in 2025, the best application of AI, the debates over rate and reserve adequacy in the casualty space and the overall state of the global market are all unequivocally and candidly expressed here. Chris is exceptionally good company and I caught him on great form in this podcast. He may be one of the most senior executives in our world but at heart he still comes across as a genuine, down-to-earth Australian who tells things the way he sees them. The fact that he has seen so much in such a wide and varied career just makes this Episode all the more valuable. Listen on and you'll see what I mean. I guarantee you'll enjoy it and learn a huge amount. We then ask them to take those principles and tell us how in their cultural context, they are going to move the ball forward. An area of particular focus in one country or company for diversity and inclusion efforts may not make a lot of sense in another.”Caryn discusses changing the current insurance talent profile, addressing unconscious biases and the importance of sincerity at levels of the organization. Matt Connolly: Platformifying InsurTech Insights

On this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Matt Connolly, entrepreneur and platform builder to the insurance sector. He's also the CEO of Sønr - the world's #1 InsurTech scouting and open innovation platform. On this episode Matt talks about himself, his idea to build the Sønr platform.   KEY TAKEAWAYS I always knew I wanted to start my own company, but I didn't know what it was going to be or what I wanted to invent. The only relevant professional experience I had was working for a digital agency but my friend and I set up a web design company in 2003 that was going to deliver strategy, creative and tech for the web. Five years later the business was very successful and became the number one digital agency in the UK. It was a very unusual position to be in as a 20-something. I always wanted to push, push and push again. I'm never satisfied. They are terrible traits in somebody, but they are also great traits for an entrepreneur. I hope I'm able to do that with a level of empathy for those around me. Staff retention supports my belief that I'm able to create a good culture and be a good leader within my organisation. And, those traits really do drive me forward.  Having control of the DNA of a company and setting culture is a great responsibility and one of the most important things to achieve as a successful founder. Once you have that right the rest of the business will flow. Fun has to be a large part of that. As a founder you start off with your feet firmly under the desk. You are involved in shaping the operation of the business, KPIs, growth metrics and all those kinds of things and you can forget about having fun, that's where my co-founder, Matt Ferguson, is great at continuously reminding me and us, to remember the fun part of work. He makes sure we are going out, we talk and connect. You need to set a vision and have a purpose within that vision and ensure that vision is brought into, and possibly even co-created, by people within the team. If you have that and everybody buys into it and you set a clear pathway to achieving that – whether you're ahead of it or behind it – then everybody will rally and do their best to make that happen. I've always felt it should be somewhat of a democracy in the culture of a business. Rather than employ people to fulfil specific roles, I'd rather employ exceptional talent, understand where they are best deployed and allow them to function with that intent. That allows them to do the thing they love the best, and invariably they're the best at, to create the right resourcing landscape to achieve our vision.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Employ people that are more talented than yourself.'  ‘You will always overestimate what you can or will achieve in one year, but you will always underestimate what you can achieve in 10. I need to remind myself of that, I'm an incredibly impatient man.' ‘Always check in with each other and have those “high five” moments and check in and look after yourself en route.' ‘I am much better at encouraging others to have fun than doing it myself. But if you're not having fun and living another life outside of work you become a one-dimensional person and that's never going to be healthy for you.'   ABOUT THE GUEST Matt is the CEO of Sønr - the world's #1 InsurTech scouting and open innovation platform. The Collapse of Greensill CapitalSoftBank-backed Greensill (a fintech company) lent billions of dollars to companies that included the highly indebted metals conglomerate GFG Alliance, silicon valley Construction Technology company Katerra and West Virginia mining company Bluestone Resources. These loans were packaged into bonds which were sold as a fund by Credit Suisse.Greensill was funded by its own German-based and regulated bank and via Zurich-based Credit Suisse Asset Management. Its main shadow banking operations were in London. German regulators BaFin last month seized control of the bank and filed a criminal complaint alleging balance sheet manipulation. Swiss and Australian officials are asking questions of Credit Suisse. Meanwhile, in the UK, where it has been celebrated as a leading “fintech” and counted former prime minister David Cameron as an adviser, there is little sign of regulatory action. In the lead up to this crisis Lex Greensill and his family took $200 million out of the company. No one knows the precise amount of bad loans involved: Credit Suisse is budgeting for at least $1bn to $2bn; insurance policies covered at least $4.6bn; in July last year insurer Tokio Marine said an underwriter had breached exposure limits by writing coverage for more than $7bn. And no one is sure who will bear the losses. GFG has already defaulted on loans to Greensill. Some of those loans exist within Credit Suisse funds. Those funds have insurance written by the likes of Insurance Australia Group and Tokio Marine. IAG says it has no “net insurance exposure” to Greensill because of “extensive reinsurance” and “agreements with Tokio Marine for it to hold any remaining exposure”. Tokio Marine, in turn, says it also has reinsurance, it may turn to litigation and, anyway, the insurance may not have been valid in the first place. This looming fight between loan originators, securitisers, funds, banks, insurers and investors looks very like the fallout from the 2008 crisis. The lawsuits that followed took up to a decade to resolve and cost tens of billions of dollars. For now, there is little general market turmoil. But it could still get messier. In this episode you'll hear from Trevor Matthews former MD/CEO of Legal & General Australia, ManuLife, Friends Provident PLC, Aviva UK and Standard Life UK. He is currently a non-executive director of AMP, Tokio Marine, FNZ and BUPA. He is also Chair of the State Industry Regulatory Authority and 1stAvailable Ltd. Key Points: Trevor tells the story of his remarkable career from actuary to CEO and President of some of the world's biggest insurance companies. He outlines that a leaders is a dealer in hope, you have to build a track record and importantly you need to be respectful about the past, realistic about the present and optimistic about the future. Trevor's top messages include: Travel was great in that it gave me a global perspective It's the execution of the strategy that makes the difference on a sustainable basis Compete aggressively on the outside and collaborate superbly on the inside You've got to line your people up shoulder to shoulder and get them out in the market aggressively going for business The more you know about more parts of the organisation the more chance you have of getting collaboration happening and that is when the magic happens. That's when companies really move ahead I believe, when you have superb collaboration on the inside. You've got to have a lofty purpose in whatever you're doing Look for ways to move ideas from one geography to another To get up a level - learn the other parts of the business, ask for more work, show good teamwork, and never lose sight of the end customer Don't take it too seriously Don't get too hung up if things don't happen as rapidly as you thought I didn't understand the CEO role until I became the CEO there were so many more stakeholders than I thought People always say you hire too fast and fire too slow If you're so busy that don't have time to work on bigger projects then getting good people around you is the secret. It releases you to work more across the business. When hiring for my executive team I look for people that know their business, expertise, somebody that will fit into the team, like me but not like me, people of the same mind that are willing to share Every time you add a new person you have a new team If you have a star that is causing trouble remember that no one is indispensible I've had a lot of success promoting people that others say is not quite ready and watching them blossom and grow One of the most important secrets is stamina and resilience. That is the only way you will succeed in the long run. Getting external advice is incredibly valuable Be respectful about the past, realistic about the present and optimistic about the future You have to work hard to develop a track record If you haven't got a track record you should be working on getting one. And you don't have to do it alone. Build confidence by doing things one step at a time. Tackle things in bite sized pieces. Don't look for the big massive solution. It's normal to be overawed to start with, I was nervous in my first executive meetings What should every leader should ask themselves everyday - What can I learn today? How can I do it better? A final message of wisdom for the next generation is from a Napoleon quote - A leader is a dealer in hope.
