Hosts Stephanie Wong and Priyanka Vergadia learn about data governance this week in an interesting chat with Jessi Ashdown and Uri Gilad. While data governance includes security measures, the overarching term also means knowing your data, where it is, and how to use it. In their book, Jessi, Uri, and their co-authors hope to make data governance more accessible by sharing the knowledge Google has developed over twenty plus years. We talk about the challenges companies of all sizes face implementing data governance frameworks and Uri shares a few tips for streamlining the process. Communication and prioritization are important no matter the size of your team. Companies must also understand the sensitivity of the data, how it’s protected and managed, and why it’s collected. Having a thoughtful, thorough understanding of what data gives you the most bang for your buck can help companies prioritize certain data collection, make better decisions, scale efficiently, and save money. When communicating with team members, it’s important to share vital information about the data. Knowing who’s in charge of what data, for example, makes accessing that data faster. With proper communication and thorough prioritization, teams can begin to think about how developing automated tools can increase functional data utilization. Later, we discuss the ways companies can support employees on the data governance journey by clearly communicating the best practice rules. Uri describes how Google uses data governance principles and shares resources Google has published that detail these steps further. Tools like BigQuery and Data Catalog are Google-built products meant to provide companies with more automated data governance solutions. Jessi and Uri wrap up the show with some more best practices in the data governance sphere, like proper metadata to increase the trustworthiness of data. And Uri details the tools Google Cloud has developed to make your data life easier, giving examples of companies putting these tools into practice. Jessi Ashdown Jessi Ashdown is a User Experience Researcher for Google Cloud who conducts user studies with customers from all over the world and uses the findings and feedback from these studies to help inform and shape Google’s data governance products to best serve those users’ needs. Uri Gilad Uri is leading the Data Governance efforts, within the Data Analytics area in Google Cloud. As part of his role, Uri is spearheading a cross-functional effort to create the relevant controls, management tools and workflows that enable a GCP customer to apply Data Governance policies in a unified fashion wherever your data may be in your GCP deployment. Prior to Google, Uri served as an executive in multiple Data Security companies: most recently as the VP of product in MobileIron, a public Zero Trust/Endpoint security platform. Uri was an early employee and a manager in CheckPoint and Forescout - two well known Security brands. Uri holds an M.sc from Tel Aviv University and a B.sc from the Technion, Israel’s Institute of Technology. You can find him on Linkedin. Cool things of the week Batter up! The Meaning Movement: Helping You Find Your Calling, Create Your Life's Work, and Make Career Change
Our guest today has had a fascinating career path. I could say that about all our guest, really. Who hasn't had a fascinating career path? But that's some of what makes these conversations so important! It's rarely linear. It never looks the way you think it will. But I digress. When Ximena Vengoechea realized that the path she was on wasn't going to take her where she wanted to go, she started researching and exploring her curiosity around startups and tech. I love the process that she created for herself and where it took her. I'll let her share that story and how you can apply a similar process to your work and any transition you may be considering. Today Ximena is a user researcher, author, and illustrator. She's taken what she's learned about really listening and drawing out the essence of what someone is bringing into a conversation into her new book, Listen Like You Mean It — Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection. In our conversation, we dig into her career journey, her current work, and some of the great takeaways from her new book. It's a blast. I think you'll really enjoy this one. In this episode you'll learn: What Ximena does How she got into her current work How she knew what next step to take What is her career transition was like What a User Experience Researcher does Where the idea for her book came from The advantage of learning to listen well Some practical steps to improving your listening skills How to engage in conversations that are difficult or uninteresting What is "projection" and how does it impact listening? What are the signs that you are listening well What are connecting questions and how to use them How to listen to when people see things differently from you What's the legacy she hope that her book will leave Why is it important to be seen and understood Show notes at: https://themeaningmovement.com/ximena

Climate change has become a major risk factor for corporations. With groups like the Carbon Disclosure Project grading companies on their carbon footprint, employees, consumers and investors are taking note -- and woe to those CEOs who are slow to pick up the ball. “We’re gonna start to see some efforts where silence is complacency and it’s no longer acceptable,” says Joel Makower of Greenbiz. “You’re gonna have to get off the sidelines, to use the football metaphor, and get into the game one way or the other. And companies that aren’t, I think, are gonna find themselves facing some new pressures.” Visit climateone.org/watch-and-listen/podcasts for more information on today's episode. This is episode #014 of Custom Made and I’m joined again by James Utley, Design Architect here at Dialexa, and we are talking with our guest this week, John Hicks - Sr. User Experience Researcher at font design company Monotype. John is a designer, researcher, and educator living in Houston, Texas. As a visual communication designer, John has spent the last 15 years designing for brands such as Mars foods, Dr. Pepper, Pizza Inn, Metro PCS, Samsung and more. In a past life, John moonlighted as an art director for various design agencies, followed by a brief stint at the University of North Texas where he taught undergraduate communication design. Since 2011, his professional efforts have been focused on design research. Following designer and educator Victor Papanek’s lead, John believes in taking a human-centered approach to design in order to champion the needs of users and to create meaningful experiences for them. His combined design and research experience provides John with a unique skill set that allows him to critically examine and solve design problems with solutions that are not only evidence-based but also aesthetically pleasing. In his current role, he is a Sr. UX researcher for Monotype where he fights the good fight to bring exceptional experiences to the MyFonts platform. On this weeks episode, we are talking with John about the politics of user research to inform the building of new products or developing new features for existing products. I think everyone recognizes, at least in theory, the importance of user research to launching successful products. Just assuming what users want is a risky thing and research helps mitigate that risk. Hearing from users first hand creates alignment and empathy for the users need. But user research is still the area of product development that gets squeezed, or in some cases ignored, and so we wanted to discuss how to navigate this challenge. During our discussion, we break down the barriers we have each experienced with organizations doing user research. These include: - Concerns about the investment of time vs getting into the design and build of the new product - Fear of negative feedback (or product failure) - Fear of the unknown - Product teams assuming they already know what is best - Fear of promising too much to the user And we give our thoughts on how to overcome these barriers by: - Understanding your user research options - Accepting that it is ok to fail, or get negative feedback about a feature or even product. In fact, all types of feedback should be welcome - Not looking for solutions just insights, no empty promises to users - Clearly communicating the user research process and expectations to get buy-in from across your product stakeholders and from the upper levels of your organization Be sure to tweet at me (https://twitter.com/dougplatts) and let me know what you think of the show. My guest this week is Victor Yocco. Victor is a User Experience Researcher working for EY-Intuitive out of Philadelphia. He has written several articles for the likes of A List Apart and Smashing Magazine and has recently written a book about User Experience Research called, Design for the Mind: Seven Psychological Principles of Persuasive Design. We talk about how user experience research works within the context of design, the culture of alcohol in tech and agency settings, his own dealings with substance abuse, getting sober, and ways to address the underlying issue that lead to substance abuse.
Threats to privacy are not only due to traditional computer security issues; human factors issues such as unintentional disclosure of information also have an impact on privacy preservation. In this talk I will discuss two examinations of psychological aspects of privacy and how they relate to technology. First, I will present results from an investigation of everyday privacy behaviors and discuss how these naturally occurring behaviors can guide the design of privacy protective technology. Then, I will introduce the concept of misclosure, which is the unintentional disclosure of information, and provide multiple example misclosures. I will conclude by demonstrating that misclosures a) occur frequently b) occur across systems and c) may be preventable by considering human factors during design. About the speaker: Kelly Caine is a Research Fellow in the School of Informatics and Computer Science at Indiana University. She received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of South Carolina and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research interests include health informatics, privacy, human factors, human computer interaction, and designing for special populations. She is a member of APA, HFES, and the ACM SIGCHI, is an alumnus of the Georgia Tech Human Factors and Aging Lab and the GVU Center, and the Aware Home Initiative, and is a current member of the IU ETHOS group. She is the recipient of a fellowship in Information Technology and International Development, the Foley Scholar award, and the Georgia Tech Presidential Scholarship. Outside of academia, Kelly worked as a User Experience Researcher at Google on a variety of projects including Google Health.
