AI strategist Kathleen Perley shares top recommended AI tools and how to optimize them for business communications strategies. Our guestOur episode guest is Kathleen Perley, professor of AI at Rice University's Jones School of Business. Kathleen is an innovative healthcare tech leader and trusted adviser in the emerging world of optimizing AI for business marketing and advertising. Five things you'll learn from this episode:The race for AI: staying authentic while building public trustUnique ways to use AI for business and personal developmentTop recommended AI toolsHow to utilize AI safely: best practicesAI and deep fakes: What is coming next? Quotables“Do we let this ego race to be first end up hindering our ability to have a public that trusts and aligns with AI and doesn't build this resistance?” - @Kathleen Perley“This [AI] is our generation's moon landing.” - @Kathleen Perley“How do we take the mundane, the rote out of our lives so we can spend more time doing what we do best, which is developing these relationships and human connections?” - @Kathleen Perley“It's one of those things I keep hearing over and over again — that if you use AI to help generate content, you'll get devalued in the algorithms from a search engine ranking perspective — but I'm not seeing that come true. I think the focus is more on quality and less on who is the creator or origin. If we use both humans and AI, it usually produces something even better than just a human or just AI alone.” - @Kathleen Perley“If you haven't started integrating AI into your crisis communication plan, now would be a great time to start thinking about that.” - @Jason Mudd “My biggest fear right now is that [AI] produces so much content so quickly that it almost takes just as much work to go through and improve it and fix it. But that first draft is awfully nice to have most of the time.” - @Jason MuddIf you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment to share it with a colleague or friend. Growing up in New York City, Brandy Hays Morrison (‘05) had never heard of Rice Business School. But in the mid 90s, when there was a push for more women and minorities to enter the field of engineering, someone told Brandy she should check it out, and it was off to Houston she went. In her words, Brandy says she “took a leap of faith, and it all worked out.”Brandy is actually a two-time Owl, earning her undergraduate degree from Rice in 2000, double majoring in computer engineering and managerial studies, and returning to earn her MBA from Rice Business in 2005. She has since served on the Board of Directors for multiple entities, including the Association of Rice University Black Alumni (ARUBA) and the Posse Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to bring more diversity and leadership to college campuses. In her professional role, Brandy is currently the Vice President of Strategic Growth for Pluribus Digital, a technology firm based in Washington, D.C., where she leads business development efforts in the federal government contracting space. Brandy sits down with host Christine Dobbyn to chat about her years at Rice, learning to advocate for herself, starting the Black Business Student Assocation at the Jones School, and the importance of being knowledgeable in global customs. Episode Quotes:Changes Brandy has seen in engineering over the course of her career13:52 - So I've gone from being the only minority female in a room to now coming across other minority females. I say for women, there have been a lot more strides in terms of making sure that the pipeline is strengthened. And what I mean by that, is that there are more little girls who can see themselves as engineers. There are more little girls who can see themselves as software developers. How The Jones School got Brandy out of her shell03:25 - [Rice MBA] really transformed me from someone who was very much an introverted technical software engineer to someone who was more comfortable speaking in public and taking a leadership role and not being afraid to speak up.How the Rice Alumni network kept Brandy going19:43 - So I came from a New York city public school. And while I had phenomenal grades, I was very involved in school, it did not prepare me for the rigors of Rice undergrad. And so I struggled a bit. And so the biggest push that I needed was to keep going. And I mentioned the rice alum by the name of Russell Ross. He was absolutely someone who had a similar path as me as a student. And so being able to meet with an alum who had a similar story, I'm thinking, okay, I can do this too. Show Links:Guest Profile: Brandy Hays Morrison on LinkedIn Brandy Hays Morrison on Twitter

Some think of him as sort of Santa Claus, kindly giving to everyone. But many forget the events of the Old Testament, such as Korah, Nadab, Abihu and Uzzah where the seriousness of the Lord is shown. God is both loving and just. He wants us to learn what is right and we cannot do that by not having responsibility for our actions. Duration 29:52

In this Nomad Futurist podcast, Jeff Uphues, CEO of DC BLOX shares his enthusiasm for serving locally and connecting globally with Phil and Nabeel. Over the last thirty years, Uphues has been involved with all facets of the communications industry from fiber to hosted applications to data centers and networks. All his experience in finance and in communications led him to where he is today, providing a network of data centers to previously underserved areas in the Southeastern US. Uphues speaks with obvious delight about his experience doing business in the South. He shares how a typical business meeting entails fifty minutes of talk about college football, food, and the weather, leading to a final ten minutes in which the nuts and bolts of the deal can finally be discussed. Uphues is passionate about bringing connectivity and functionality to smaller thriving cities. “When we look at markets, we really try to pick markets that are a million people or more in the greater metropolitan service area—cities like Greenville in South Carolina, and Huntsville in Alabama.” Uphues discusses how the pandemic has generated additional demand for data centers and how his firm has been able to serve in local markets providing services for local enterprises, government, hospital systems and banking as well as for national firms like Netflix. “It's all about serving locally and connecting globally on behalf of underserved communities…and when you're serving locally and using local contractors, it really means something.” Uphues weighs in on the importance of data centers. “Everything in communications, the communications infrastructure that is out there is all hosted…the cloud has four walls and it's called a data center.” Uphues is optimistic about the future of the industry. He sees that with more broadband services being rolled out, there will be an ever-increasing need for interactive communication and for hosting applications close to where they will be consumed. His advice to young people getting started in the industry: “Well, number one, don't be afraid to make mistakes and get your hands dirty.” His parting words: “It all comes down to people. If you're willing to learn, willing to listen, and willing to embrace how customers are trying to solve problems, you'll have a long, beneficial and financially rewarding career.” Jeff Uphues has been leading DC BLOX as its CEO and board member since late 2016. DC BLOX is a leading provider of interconnected, multi-tenant, tier III data centers that deliver the infrastructure and connectivity essential to power today's digital business. He is responsible for the company's strategy and execution in supporting underserved growing markets in the Southeastern US. Prior to DC BLOX, Jeff has a 25-year track record in the communications, cloud, and data center industries, having held numerous C-suite leadership positions across sales, marketing and operations for Liquid Web, Cbeyond, Bandwidth, ACSI Network Technologies and MCI. Jeff serves as an active board member in several technology firms. He is a graduate of the Harvard Business School (AMP), Rice University's Jones School of Business Executive Education Program in Finance and Accounting, and the University of Texas at Arlington. Tuesday, August 17, 2021, Court Leader's Advantage Podcast Episode Local Courts can offer incredible opportunity for both defendants and for the community. They are positioned precisely at a point to curtail dangerous behavior before it grows worse. The array of problem-solving courts nationally, often managed on a shoestring budget, is astounding. This does not make up for the fact that local courts are often neglected. They are frequently disparaged. In some cases, they manifest structural flaws that clearly need to be corrected. All the while, we remember that local courts are the place where most of the public obtain their first-hand experience of courts and justice. This month we look at some of the challenges local courts face including: · How should local court judges be selected? · Should all local court judges be attorneys? · Should all defendants in matters before local courts be represented by counsel? · Should local courts be courts of record? We will also continue our discussion of three recent Harvard Law Review articles about local courts. "Criminal Municipal Courts" by Alexandra Natapoff, "Kangaroo Courts" by Shaun Ossei-Owusu, and "Abolish Municipal Courts" by Brendan Roediger. The Honorable Edward Spillane is the Presiding Municipal Judge for the City of College Station, Texas and has served in this position since May 2002. Prior to this, he served as an Assistant District Attorney for Brazos County for 8 years and as an associate for the law firm Fulbright & Jaworski for 2 years. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, and his law degree from the University of Chicago. The Honorable Mary Logan has been practicing law for over 27 years as a licensed attorney in California and in Washington. As a Judge, she was elected Presiding Judge of the Spokane Municipal Court from 2009 through 2014. Among her many accomplishments, she is one of the “core engineers” of the City of Spokane's Community Court and presides over the City's Veteran's Therapeutic Court. Courtney Whiteside is the Director of the St. Louis County Municipal Division where she provides educational opportunities to municipal divisions and clerks through various committees and educational groups in the state while promoting cultural and procedural reforms. Courtney started in 2012 as a court clerk then went to Jefferson City to work with the Office of State Courts Administrator and on to the Missouri Supreme Court to serve as the state's municipal division courts monitor. Bettye King is a Court Administrator for the Municipal Court for the City of Birmingham, Alabama. She has served in this capacity since 2003. Bettye earned her Master's Degree in Public Administration and Bachelor's Degree in Pre-Law Criminal Justice from Auburn University. She was the Patricia Harris Fellowship recipient and awarded Outstanding Achievement in Public Administration. She earned her Juris Doctorate from the Jones School of Law. Rashida Davis serves as the Court Administrator and Chief Clerk for the Municipal Court of Atlanta, Georgia. She earned her bachelor's degree in Political Science from Georgia State University. Rashida graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law Cum Laude. She is a licensed attorney with the State of Georgia. Her legal background primarily focused on litigation and criminal defense.
Tuesday, July 20, 2021, Court Leader's Advantage Podcast Episode Local Courts are the least analyzed components of the American court system. This is particularly ironic since there are thousands of local courts, far more than there are courts of general jurisdiction. It has been estimated that they process over three and a half million criminal cases and collect at least two billion dollars in fines and fees annually. When we talk about preserving the public's trust and confidence in America's courts, we often miss that most citizens gain their first-hand experience from dealing with a local court. This month we are looking at three recent Harvard Law Review articles on local courts: Criminal Municipal Courts by Alexandra Natapoff, Kangaroo Courts by Shaun Ossei-Owusu, and Abolish Municipal Courts by Brendan Roediger. Here to discuss their perspectives on these articles are folks who can honestly reveal the whole story on local courts. They are judges and court administrators all of whom work in municipal courts. We are looking at questions including: · Can and should we be collecting more data on local courts nationally? · Can the problem-solving model, fostered by many local courts, scale-up across the country? · Can local courts resist the pressure many cities impose to increase revenue? · What takeaways do these Judges and Court Administrators have for the rest of us? Today's Panelists The Honorable Edward Spillane is the Presiding Municipal Judge for the City of College Station, Texas and has served in this position since May 2002. Creative Business Solutions What You Will Learn: How Shane’s upbringing, experience in the U.S. Air Force, and career journey culminated in the launch of health insurance company Hooray Health Why starting out at the lowest level of healthcare gave Shane a unique perspective on the need for creative business solutions in the health insurance industry How Shane made the foray into the realm of health benefits, and how he recognized the opportunity to do things differently from the paradigm Why Shane believes that any life experience can offer valuable lessons that can be applied to future situations Why hearing the phrase “love the problem — not the solution” from the founder of Waze was a profound, watershed moment for Shane Why Shane created Hooray Health to address the real challenges and unmet needs of America’s uninsured workers How Hooray Health is structured differently from others in the health insurance industry, creating a better experience for members Why too many employees are forced to make difficult healthcare decisions based on their financial situations, and how Hooray Health is working to change that How Shane is using thought leadership to change perceptions and shine a light on the challenges people face in accessing basic healthcare How Shane first got started in thought leadership, and how he learned the importance of self-promotion and adding value Creative Business Solutions and Disrupting the Paradigm Oftentimes we fall into the trap of doing things the way we do them because it’s how we have always done them. But it’s the creative business solutions — not the same old strategies — that have the potential to create new opportunities and even disrupt entire industries. In this episode of Onward Nation, health insurance company Hooray Health founder and CEO Shane Foss shares how identifying the unmet needs of America’s millions of uninsured employees formed the basis for his company’s mission to reinvent health insurance from the ground up, and he explains why thought leadership has proven to be a powerful tool to build credibility and get his message out. Recognizing Opportunities for Creative Business Solutions For Shane, the “aha!” moment came when he saw firsthand the challenges that uninsured workers were facing in getting access to basic healthcare. Shane began questioning the status quo and wondering if there was a better way to do things — and this train of thought ultimately culminated in the formation of Hooray Health. Shane identified an underserved group and then innovated cost-effective solutions to help them gain access to necessary healthcare services. He saw the problem and then built and iterated on solutions to address it, without falling into the trap of becoming too attached to the solutions his company created. This allowed Hooray Health the flexibility to find new angles and opportunities and to adjust based on the needs of their clients rather than getting too locked into their business model. Being Bold and Willing to Experiment At every step during the process of building Hooray Health, Shane was told “you can’t do that” or “that will never work”, or “you’ll never find an underwriter willing to take the risk”. Shane might easily have listened to the naysayers, but he kept going. Eventually, he was able to put all the pieces together and offer low-cost, practical healthcare plans that empowered part-time workers and other overlooked segments to attain healthcare while protecting themselves from predatory billing practices. Shane and his team put together creative business solutions that allow them to meet the needs of an otherwise untapped market — while simultaneously creating profits for their business and looking after the needs of their clients. None of this would’ve been possible had Shane just accepted the conventional wisdom of health insurance at face value. About Shane Foss With over 20 years of tenure as an executive in the medical industry, Shane Foss became frustrated with how under-served Americans were with the current healthcare options. He set out to make a change and in 2018 achieved this goal through launching Hooray Health, an unconventional health insurance company dedicated to providing affordable basic and urgent health care alternatives to high-deductible health plans. Through Hooray Health, Foss and his team focus on offering peace of mind to lower-income individuals and families who face medical challenges, while also providing business owners with an affordable way to reward and retain employees. Partnering with companies like Sedera, Ameritas, and Aflac, they have been able to add critical services and supplemental plans giving immense value to employers and individuals. Throughout his professional experience, Foss has negotiated complex, multi-million-dollar contracts, worked in device sales management, created business strategies, and optimized P&L. He holds an MBA from Rice University’s Jones School of Business, a BS from the University of the Incarnate Word, and a Surgical Technologist Certificate from the United States Air Force. In 1980, Greg began working for Jere Beasley as his first law clerk, right after Beasley opened his private practice. In the beginning, Greg worked at the law office for free, hoping to gain experience while attending law school. Today, he is a principal and lead products liability attorney at Beasley Allen Law Firm. He has been involved in many product liability cases that have resulted in substantial verdicts and settlements and enjoys taking on giant corporations on behalf of people who have been seriously injured, especially in difficult and technical cases.
