CHRISTY'S BIO This talk is a master class on the media & entertainment world and the disruptive forces changing it from someone who has been a media executive, trailblazing entrepreneur and Hollywood super-agent. Christy Haubegger most recently served as EVP of Communications and Chief Inclusion Officer for WarnerMedia  leading an organization of 450 executives, spanning Communications, Corporate Marketing, Corporate Social Responsibility. She oversaw all corporate communications and marketing for WarnerMedia as well as Warner Bros., HBO and HBO Max, CNN, TBS, and TNT. At CAA, she worked closely with clients such as Eva Longoria, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, America Ferrera, among others and led the drive to increase the representation of women and people of color in the content business. USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative estimated that CAA grew the diversity of its roster by more than 1400% in her tenure. She also created CAA Amplify, an invitation-only convening of diverse artists and leaders from entertainment, sports, media, and brands, focused on accelerating the growth, value, and visibility of diversity in business. Amplify guests included Lee Daniels, Daniel Dae Kim, Carmelo Anthony, Hon. Xavier Becerra, Constance Wu, Shonda Rhimes, JJ Abrams, Jamie Foxx, Michael B. Jordan, Jon Chu, Ana DuVernay, Valerie Jarrett, Stevie Wonder, Hon. Susan Rice, Hon. Julian Castro, Ana Navarro, among others. Christy's first foray into entertainment was in 2003, as a motion picture producer, with credits including the Fox film “Chasing Papi” and Oscar-winner James L. Brooks' “Spanglish,” starring Adam Sandler.  Prior to that, she founded and served as CEO of Latina magazine in 1996 and quickly became the leading media platform for U.S. Hispanic women. A real trailblazer and Latina pioneer, she was the youngest woman to be inducted into the American Advertising Federation & Advertising Hall of Achievement and has been profiled and interviewed by numerous media outlets including CNN, NPR, NBC Nightly News, Elle magazine, Vogue, Vanity Fair and the Today Show. Recently, the Hollywood Reporter named her on their list of the Most Powerful Latinos in Hollywood. We're mixing things up today with a conversation about the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and their research on representation in film and TV. We spoke with Katherine Pieper, the program director at the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. As the leading global think tank studying inclusion in media, the initiative examines the prevalence and portrayal of groups such as: girls and women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, and mental health conditions. They analyze who is on-screen and behind the camera across film, episodic, and short film content. As part of our conversation, we discuss the results of one of their latest studies – Inequality in 1600 popular films examining portrayals of gender, race, ethnicity, LGBTQ+, and disability in Films from 2007 - 2022, as well as dive into the Inclusion Index, and learn more about their new study on indigenous representation in film. In this new issue of The Comic Section Podcast, we begin by paying our condolences to the legendary comic creator, Keith Giffen. Giffen was known for his iconic work on titles like Justice League International and Legion of Super-Heroes, as well as co-creating beloved characters such as Rocket Raccoon, Lobo, and Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle. His passing at the age of 70 will be a significant loss to the comic book community, and we reflect on his contributions and impact. Shifting to the world of Hollywood, we covered the recent developments in the entertainment industry. The Hollywood writers' strike officially came to an end when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) voted to ratify its contract with the AMPTP, the organization representing major studios and production companies. However, we discuss how the actors remain on the picket line, with no clear resolution in sight, shedding light on the ongoing labor disputes in the industry. Marvel fans will be in for some noteworthy updates as the podcast reports that Daredevil writers and directors have been fired, signaling a creative reboot for the Disney+ series. This change could potentially bring a fresh direction to the beloved character and show. The future of DC Universe and the casting updates for Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and the rest of the Justice League will be discussed, providing insight into what's in store for DC's cinematic universe. A new research brief from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative will also be explored, as it tests various factors believed to contribute to box office performance, offering a deeper understanding of the industry's dynamics. Anime enthusiasts will find exciting news as Crunchyroll launches a free 24-Hour anime channel, providing an additional avenue for enjoying their favorite animated series. We also reveal that Miramax has secured the TV rights for 'Halloween' in a broad agreement with Trancas, hinting at the potential expansion of the cinematic universe around this iconic horror franchise. Trailers for upcoming movies will be featured, including A24's 'The Iron Claw' starring Zac Efron and the second trailer for 'Wonka' starring Timothée Chalamet, offering listeners a sneak peek at these highly anticipated films. In the review segment, Rigel will share his thoughts on R.L. Stine's 'Zombietown,' and 'Hulu's No One Will Save You,' providing valuable insights and opinions on these pieces of entertainment. Tune in to The Comic Section Podcast for a comprehensive dive into the latest developments in the world of comics, movies, and entertainment, along with heartfelt remembrance of a comic legend.

BRICS-Gipfel in Johannesburg in Südafrika statt. Melissa C. Potter honed her expertise in the topics of Race, Identity, Culture, and Equity working in both the social justice and entertainment worlds. Today she is the Vice President of Strategy and Impact at Paramount, upholding the company's commitment to the long-term social impact of cultural shifts in society as driven across a diverse collection of brands including CBS, SHOWTIME, MTV, BET, and Nickelodeon.  Melissa is also responsible for the MTV Entertainment Group's Culture Orientation program. Working in collaboration with the country's leading racial and social justice organizations, this initiative unites shared values, increases understanding, and amplifies learning to empower the entire creative community to tell stories that reflect the diversity of Paramount viewers. Part of Paramount's mission is to increase representation on both sides of the camera through their Content for Change initiative.  In this episode we discuss: ●      The power of media to break down narratives that enable intolerance, hurtful stereotypes, and systemic racism ●      The importance of multidimensional storytelling ●      How MTV is addressing mental health and inspiring civic action Key Takeaways: ●      Melissa's career journey is a great example of the magic that can happen when you follow your interests—even when those interests don't clearly overlap or immediately present an end destination. It might be that the end destination doesn't exist yet, but you're developing your unique skills so that you're ready when it does. Melissa's background in entertainment, PR, communications, social justice, and sociology isn't something found on most resumes. But it's this specific combination that makes her the perfect candidate for leading strategy and impact for Content for Change at Paramount, a role that didn't exist until 2020. ●      Our impressions can be influenced by the status quo, as well as our internal and systemic biases. This is why measurement is so important. Data enables us to move beyond the lens of bias to understand where we currently stand so that we can figure out how to get to where we want to go. Paramount's analysis of its content was a critical first step to developing a strategy around Content for Change. ●      Stories are powerful. They have the ability to capture our attention, to draw us in, to make us feel seen, understood, and less alone. Stories also shape our perspectives. They have the power to expand our understanding of others, and consequently increase our capacity for empathy and compassion. But stories aren't inherently good. Stories can just as easily cause damage, increase misunderstanding, reinforce damaging stereotypes, and promote intolerance. The stories we tell are important. They shape us. We must handle them with care.  References: ●      Connect with Melissa on LinkedIn ●      Paramount ●      Content for Change ●      Learn more about MTV Entertainment's Culture Orientation program here ●      Learn more about the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative here Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Although Jennifer Justice was surrounded by women who chose a different life path, Jennifer always knew from a young age that she wanted to be a businesswoman. From being a first generation college student, to an Entrepreneur and former entertainment executive at Roc Nation, as well as being named to Billboard Women in Power list three times, she has truly embodied what it is to be a ‘lady boss.' Jennifer is known for her expertise in building artists' careers and business portfolios by marrying art and commerce as well as championing gender equality and diversity in the workplace and beyond. Jennifer is passionate about advocating for women in the workplace and serves on several boards including Chair of the WIE Network Advisory Board and is a founding advisory board member of USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. Jennifer discusses how she wanted to create a platform for businesswomen to connect with one another and get valuable advice from someone who shares their experiences. She emphasizes that experiences in the workplace are vastly different when it comes to gender. Jennifer created her podcast “Lady Business” as a way to inspire other women to step into their careers as well as stand up for themselves in an industry that is male dominated. She also created “The Justice Dept,” a female focused advisory, consulting and law firm advocating for female founders, talent, execs and brands. Jennifer reminds us that with perseverance and community, we can make a difference for women in the workplace as well as in our own careers. Jennifer poses the question: what's taking so long? Some powerful takeaways from today's episode: Although Jennifer was surrounded by women who chose to stay home and care for their families, she knew she wanted to be in the workforce from a young age The greatest lessons learned come from failing The industry continues to pay women less than men and at the current rate it will take 200 years for women and men to be paid equally People often get trapped when focusing on the benefits of working for a large company when making the leap to become their own boss What's worse, regret? Or failing and learning from it? Men and women do not have the same experiences which is why Jennifer wanted to create a platform for women to get insight from other successful women in the workforce “You will fail, I fail every day” Links: Jennifer Justice's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifer-justice-354a0b99/ Jennifer Justice's Website: https://www.thejusticedept.com/jennifer-justice THE RE:INVENTION EXCHANGE - for more Inspired Content, Blogs, Podcasts, Virtual Chats,or to buy a copy of my book RE:INVENT YOUR LIFE! The Pop Culture Happy Hour team is off today, so we're bringing you a story from Mandalit del Barco's radio series about Latinos in Hollywood. Latinos have been a part of Hollywood since the days of silent movies, but they continue to be underrepresented in front of and behind the camera. For example, there aren't many Latina actresses in leading movie roles-- fewer than two percent, according to USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. And those who do make it also multitask as directors, producers, and activists.

Last year, the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative examined over 4,000 executives from 119 music companies and found that only 7.5% were Black. In this episode we're joined by Jaia Thomas, founder and president of Diverse Representation, and Amity Paye, senior director of communications at Color Of Change, two organisations that recently announced the launch of the Diverse Representation Music Database, which connects music companies directly with Black talent across the USA. They'll be talking about representation and equity in the music business, as well as the ambitions of the database, and the corporate accountability of the industry at large. Amity and Jaia also suggest how you can get started and be part of the change – even if you think you're not powerful enough to make a difference. (Spoiler: you are!) As an executive, she has worked across many areas of the entertainment industry, and now at WarnerMedia, she touches iconic brands such as CNN, Turner sports, Cartoon Network, and HBO and HBO, Max and Warner Brothers television, Warner Brothers films, Warner Brothers animation and Adult Swim - all with an eye on empowering diverse creators. Guest Bio Karen Horne Senior Vice President, Equity and Inclusion Programs WarnerMedia As a senior executive with over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, she has been recognized as a Diversity and Inclusion pioneer and pipeline builder. Since coming to WarnerMedia in March of 2020, Horne has been involved in creating and implementing multiple pipeline programs that aim to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities. These programs give talented individuals, who would otherwise not have the opportunity, access to the entertainment industry to showcase their talent. She has brought expertise gained from her career to create cohesive programs, ranging from entry-level to mid-career, that service the entire enterprise. These programs support expansion in areas that have not traditionally been serviced (i.e., virtual production, games, news and sports, animation, comedy, etc.). Before WarnerMedia, Horne was at NBC Entertainment and Universal Television Studios as Senior Vice President, Programming Talent Development and Inclusion where she was responsible for overseeing in-front-of and behind-the-camera primetime diversity efforts for NBC and Universal Television. While there, she started the Late-Night Writers Workshop in 2013 which changed the landscape of the writers' rooms by increasing the number of women and ethnically diverse men, both of which were lacking. Another extraordinary program she developed was Female Forward, which guaranteed shadowing directors an opportunity to direct an entire episode in addition to the traditional shadowing access. The programs and initiatives she created and/or developed became the industry's gold standard and a blueprint for many other companies. Her background in finding and developing new talent allows her great ease in working with the creative world, while her corporate upbringing and work with C-Suite executives allows her equal comfort in any board room. Horne has always been dedicated to increasing equity and inclusion in the entertainment industry throughout her career. She has been honored with several awards and recognitions for her diversity and inclusion work and her service to underrepresented communities. Horne serves on multiple industry boards and has spoken both nationally and internationally on diversity and inclusion best practices. She serves on the boards of Montclair State University's School of Communication and Media, USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, The Alliance of Women Directors, RespectAbility, and The Urban League of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. She is a member of several entertainment industry organizations. The dancer is moving away from teaching twerk lessons to focusing on her music, especially rap. “I wasn't able to get out a full story and talk really detailed in a pop song. I couldn't really spill my emotions out in a pop song. There wasn't enough room for it.” In rap, she says, there is. Lex grew up taking dance classes and singing lessons in Los Angeles and Sacramento. She wanted to be a singer since she was young, but her focus shifted when her twerking class gained popularity. “Six years ago, I started a Twerk Out class which boomed off unexpectedly,” she explains. “That changed my whole path.” While teaching, Lex realized that she was promoting other people's songs when she used them for her lessons. She then thought, “why not try to do my records?” Now, she's focusing on making music again. Virgin Lex released her first rap song, “Only Fans,” at the end of April. It's one of ten tracks on her EP, The Savagery, which she expects to drop in June. “I'm inspired by a lot of the rapper females right now,” she says, because of their confidence and “bad bitch vibes.” She mentions her dream to collaborate with Megan Thee Stallion whose hit song, “Savage,” is at the top of the charts and recently landed a remix featuring Beyoncé. Lex has struggled with her confidence throughout her life, and the messages some female rappers send matter to her a lot. Bullies at school used to make fun of her for having hairy arms, for example. Or, she recalls, some would call her “terrorist” because of her Persian ethnicity. As she overcomes issues with her self-image, she is hoping to inspire other women too. As she makes more music, she looks forward to working with other women, but she knows there's a lot of gender inequality in the industry. “I wish there were more women engineers, producers, videographers, photographers. That would be legendary if I had a girl team around me.” According to a study by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California, less than 13 percent of songwriters are women. Even lower, women make up less than three percent of producers. “Lexy Panterra is cool, but she's detonated, and we're moving on,” she says. Here is a first look at Virgin Lex's new music video for “Only Fans.” Lexy Panterra is the definition of Baddie Vibez. Not only is this the title to her newest project, but the Bay Area native serves as a role model to all females around the world that you're a bad bitch, period! Exuding confidence, swag, and an out-of-this-world personality, the recording artist, entrepreneur, and world-renowned twerker continues to bless the masses with her inner and outer beauty. Boasting 2.6 million followers on Instagram, 2.3 million subscribers on YouTube, 3.1 million followers on Facebook, and billions of impressions across all social platforms, Lexy proves why she's a staple in the entertainment industry. It was in 2014 when she went viral for her popular company Twerkout, inspiring people to embrace their bodies and confiDANCE through movement.
