According to the World Health Organization, 8-13% of women are affected by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and it is also the leading cause of infertility for women. To explore more about this syndrome and its specific impact on Black women, I'm joined today by Sasha Ottey, a clinical and research microbiologist and the founder and executive director of PCOS Challenge: The National Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Association. After she was diagnosed with PCOS, Sasha founded PCOS Challenge and has since grown the organization to over 55,000 members. Her leadership focuses on advocating for research funding, innovation, and the development of safe and effective treatments for PCOS. During our conversation, we discuss why over 70% of women go undiagnosed for PCOS, the common symptoms and experiences of women with PCOS, and how to advocate for yourself to your medical team when fearing that you may have PCOS. About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Welcome to episode 84 of the Eat for Endurance podcast, featuring fellow sports dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner (RDN, CSSD). Dawn is all about “positive nutrition” and the idea that “joy is a nutrient,” which really captured my attention, as I send similar messaging to my clients. I encourage them to fuel themselves fully so they can feel good, perform well, and just as importantly, have FUN. Because no one is having fun when they're tired, underfed, injured, sick, burnt out, or not supporting and appreciating their body in other ways.    If you're rolling your eyes and wondering, what on earth does joy have to do with nutrition, health, and athletic performance?! Listen to this episode and learn. Dawn's own struggles motivated her to develop skills to access more joy, and she realized through this process just how impactful joy can be as a success strategy when applied to all parts of her life, including nutrition and lifestyle behaviors. We also discuss how to cultivate body gratitude, combat poor body image, achieve one's “best” weight, incorporate more play and simplicity into the everyday, what to do when joy feels out of reach, and SO much more. To be clear, we're not saying that every moment is joyful and fun - of course not! I have little kids and live a real life with plenty of tough moments, and I've had my fair share of crappy workouts and races. We're also not telling you to put on a fake smile. But we can all slow down enough that we catch and appreciate geniune moments of joy, while also being kinder to our bodies and fueling ourselves in a way that supports health and feels good.  This is one of my favorite episodes, and I hope you love it as much as I do. Links & Resources:Dawn's Website: https://www.dawnjacksonblatner.com/Follow her on Instagram (@djblatner)Announcements:Check out my YouTube page to watch this episodeCheck out my NEW digital downloads and upcoming course hereSign up for my email list to receive my monthly newsletter filled with nutrition tips, recipes and special discountsJoin my Patreon community to support the pod while getting free merch, special discounts, and other perksPlease give the podcast a 5 star rating and review wherever you listenHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? How is the sense of control an illusion? How do I let go of this idea of control? How does letting go support manifestation? How can I live life more free-flowing?  In this episode of Love Always, Self, Karista & Shyra discuss the illusion of control and the practice of letting go. Karista & Shyra expand upon a shared message Shyra received from MT GLASS. “ Letting go has an association with surrendering to the unknown. It is a valid thought process to want to control your scenarios in life. However, implementing predictions into the unknown can cause a blockage of thoughts and create predictions of stories that you yourself have created without a known outcome. Giving yourself the freedom to let go allows you to release the responsibility of the outcomes, thus releasing the blockages you yourself have created. It is still valid that your experiences up until now and the education you have received are based on your location and circumstances. Has given you "permission", and they quoted that to individually and collectively created these stories as a way of self-preservation and protection. However, we feel that we are coming into a time-space where "letting go" is imminent to perceive the unknown and create in a space that gives way to better connections of self-thoughts, reality creation.” - MT GLASS : Resources Mentioned:  Joanne Scribes: Angel Numbers: http://sacredscribesangelnumbers.blogspot.com/p/index-numbers.html : Announcements: Check out Divine Living: Style & Decor! Love Always, Self
Ep 81: Taking Action Towards Your Future Self

Love Always, Self

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2022 26:37

How can I take action towards reaching my future self? How do I manifest? Does manifestation require action? What are the steps to manifestation? What is needed to manifest? How do I create my reality?  In this episode of Love Always, Self, Karista & Shyra discuss the topic of manifestation. One misconception of manifestation is that thought is all that is required.  While this may sometimes be the case, it is a more rare occurrence for most. Manifestation generally requires more than a thought; it requires action and practicing embodying the future self you want to desire.  Steps to taking action towards manifesting your future self:  Get clear on what it is that you want and set your intentions. Daydream, be specific and detailed. What do you see your future self doing day to day? What does your future self do to feel and experience what you are missing now? Observe your current thoughts, reactions, and patterns. Where is your mindset? Are your thoughts coming from a place of lack? Or a place of abundance? Do the word choices of your thoughts support perceived limitations? Or do they encourage and build you up?  Start taking action. Pick ONE action you'd like to incorporate into your life and practice daily. Make it a part of your routine. A 5-minute meditation, a morning walk, drinking water before coffee, practicing positive affirmations.  It's ok to start small. Set yourself up for success by avoiding becoming overwhelmed by wanting to change too much at once.  Be open to the magic of receiving, in whatever way the Universe may deliver.  Trust the process. Practice patience and persistence. Trust yourself and your ability to create. Acknowledge, with gratitude, all the things you have done, the things that have changed, and everything that has been received, for everything you are, for everything you have experienced and have yet to experience. : Announcements: Check out Divine Living: Style & Decor! Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

This month's episode of Brain Science is an interview with Hakwan Lau, author of In Consciousness we Trust: The Cognitive Neuroscience of Subjective Experience. Lau talks about shortcomings in current theories about how the brain generates consciousness, but he also introduces something he calls perceptual reality monitoring.  Although this is a somewhat technical discussion it is accessible to listeners who are new to the neuroscience of consciousness. This is part 2 of 3 in our crypto series. I have really enjoyed editing this series. With each listen back, I catch something new and often find my mind wondering the possible ways this new technology will be implemented. In this hour, only Kishore and I are talking as Shannon was trying to keep the kids quiet, which created a slightly different feel to this part. Listen carefully and try to begin to imagine how a blockchain could be applied in your profession or hobbies. If you come up with something, hop over to our sub-reddit and we will discuss. Enjoy! This is part 1 of a 3 part story exploring the topic of crypto currency and DeFi. This was a barn burner of a recording at over 3 hours, which sets a record as our longest interview, and I honestly felt like the conversation could have kept going, the topics were far from exhausted. Our guest, Kishore Yalamanchili, is a pulmonologist by trade and gained a large Facebook following as he gave updates on the covid-19 pandemic in 2020. After attending a crypto meet-up at Dream Chasers Cafe, which he host, I knew I needed to have him as a guest on the podcast. I hope you enjoy this episode. Do you consider yourself the sex expert of your home? Today we are discussing how to talk to your kids about sex. I know it seems like a big role — but it’s possible. Ninety-nine percent of what our kids need when they ask questions about their bodies is to know that we won’t shut them down.  Today is the first in a series of episodes that I’m calling “You Are Your Child’s Most Important Teacher.”  I am so grateful to have Kristin Hodson (https://www.kristinbhodson.com/) , certified sex therapist and mother of three, as our first guest in this series. Kristin is a true expert in the field of sexual health as she frequently teaches workshops to parents on this topic, writes for publications, teaches at the university-level, and counsels individuals about their sexuality in her private practice.  Kristin’s three takeaways for becoming the sex expert of your home include… Expand your definition from sex to sexual health, and have a thousand one-minute conversations with your children about sexual health over the course of their lifetimes.  Become comfortable with your own sexual history and development so you’re comfortable talking about these topics with your kids. (For Kristin’s guide to figuring this out, make sure you’re subscribed to our emails here (https://mailchi.mp/3in30podcast/kristinhodson) .) View talking to your kids about sex as a skill you will get better at with practice.  Kristin is a wealth of knowledge and resources around sexual health, so make sure you check out her website or find her on Instagram!  Show Notes: Full transcript of this episode here. For more of the episode, check www.a-radio-network.org . Support for Those Arrested in Newnan GA! This weekend there were large counter presences to a national socialist movement rally in the small town of Newnan Georgia, about 45 minutes outside of Atlanta. This group, which was formerly known as the American nazi party, has been called one of the most active white supremacist groups in the US, and was gathering to celebrate the birthday of one dead white power a-hole. Despite the protesters outnumbering the wp group by as much as 10 or 20 to 1, militarized police heavily repressed the diverse coalition of anti racist activists by using extreme physical force resulting in over 10 arrests. From the support page: As feared, cops attacked and arrested people with absolutely no justification - particularly people of color and other marginalized individuals. So far, we're aware of up to 13 arrests, some of whom are dealing with serious medical conditions while in jail. We need to get them out as soon as possible, and we need a lot of money to do it. Together we have the power to free them! From an update posted this morning: We have several protesters free already thanks to bail contributions! We have contacted everyone still in jail, and have learned some concerning things: Some protesters are being given trumped up felony charges, despite video evidence showing they did nothing. We believe the charges are intended to make it longer/more expensive to get them out. We have also learned that some protesters have been put in the same cell block as NSM members (a Nazi group). This makes it even more urgent that we get folks out as soon as possible. To donate to those still in custody and for contributing legal support, you can visit the support webpage here. From the Neighborhood Anarchist Collective in Eugene, Oregon "For this May Day, the Neighborhood Anarchist Collective will be hosting an International Workers' Day Solidarity Share Fair on Tuesday, May 1st!   The event will be at First Christian Church* from 2-6PM.   This free market is a project organized by NAC to provide free goods and services from local organizations and community groups to the unhoused and working class communities in need of these basic necessities, along with food, live music, and a chance to know other folks in the community – and it's all free! Deadline is May 18, 2018 (and June 8 for prisoners) and submissions can be sent to info@certaindays.org or check out certaindays.org for more information. ACAB 2018 pushes back it's deadline For anyone interested in giving a presentation or looking to table at the 2018 ACAB, or Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair in Asheville from Thursday, June 21- Sunday, June 24, 2018, there's been an extension of deadline. Sign up for either or both of those things or find more information at https://acab2018.noblogs.org And now a couple of repression announcements: Herman Bell back on track to parole! In some good news, the lawsuit to block the release of political prisoner Herman Bell, former Black Panther and Black Liberation Army POW in New York State, has been thrown out by a judge, so he should be released on his scheduled parole after nearly 45 years inside. Thanks to everyone who sent letters & emails, made phone calls and spread the word about Herman Bell's case. We wish him a welcome back to the outside. Free Them All! In some not as good news from Hamilton, Ontario, so-called Canada: As some of you may have heard, our beloved friend, Cedar (Peter) Hopperton has been arrested and charged in relation to the property damage that occurred on Locke Street in Hamilton. In the very early morning hours of Friday, April 6th, the Hamilton SWAT team broke down the door of Cedar's house, threw in a flash grenade, and entered with assault riffles drawn. Cedar was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offense (unlawful assembly while masked). While a publication ban is in effect that prohibits us from sharing the details of the crown's flimsy case, we can say that this is clearly a political prosecution: Cedar is being targeted because they are a visible face to anarchist organizing in Hamilton, and because of their self-affirmed and proud anarchist politics. As we learned from the G20 in Toronto, and again more recently with the J20 defendants in the US, conspiracy charges are ambiguous and deeply political. This is no different. On Tuesday, April 10th, having already been in custody for 5 days due to stall tactics used by the crown, Cedar was, devastatingly, denied bail. Despite the fact that they have no history of violence and have never been charged with a violent crime, Cedar will remain indefinitely in jail, a place that is profoundly violen t and leaves lasting trauma. In addition to the routine violence of jail life, Cedar, as a gender nonconforming person, faces additional harm from the institution, the guards, as well as the other prisoners. Please visit https://hamiltonanarchistsupport.noblogs.org/ for more information or to make a donation to Cedar's legal defense fund. Also consider writing Cedar. Keep in mind all correspondence will be screened by guards. Use ink only – no glue, fragrances, glitter, stickers, etc. Sending books is prohibited. Staples are also not allowed. Today’s featured guest is Bryant Isaacs with Target Combined Services. @targetcontracting I met Bryant down in Florida at the Builder’s Show, and I was immediately impressed with his infectious smile, and his drive & determination. But what I didn’t know was the crazy story behind all this drive and determination, which has its roots all the way back when he was 16. His success certainly hasn’t came easily as you will hear throughout this interview. But even though he’s been through some hard times, one thing is for certain… he never gave up. Which is part of his advice, as well as the title of today’s show. So, listen all the way through! You'll be INSPIRED! This week's Protractor Tip is from Brad Leavitt with AFT Construction. He talks about sticking with what you're good at, and not trying to be everything to everybody. He gives some great examples, and lots of insight. Be sure to check it out! Announcements: Check out the brand new article that just went live on our Protractor Blog. It’s written by Jonathan Walters, who is a project manager on one of the HGTV shows, and his blog post this week is all about the Top 5 Phone Numbers You Should Have on Speed Dial. This is a fun and informative read. Check it out… some of his suggestions may surprise you. To read this article, simply go to www.protractorpodcast.com and tap the Articles link in the menu bar. Secondly, I want to let you know about my book: Contractor Marketing Simplified. If it’s your desire to build your online presence as a contractor, but don’t know how to do it, then this book is for you. Right now, I’m offering it for free in the USA. All I ask you to do is help with the shipping & handling. To get your free copy, just go to www.contractormarketingsimplified.com fill out the forms on that page, and we’ll get a copy sent out to you. Some great quotes from today's show: Don’t give up! It doesn’t come easy. Keep everything organized. Organization will sell yourself on a job site. Make sure you go through the right learning steps before starting out. Use social media to the best of your abilities. Keep up with the times. That's all for this week! Share, Comment, Like, Review! Thanks for your support! and see you next week!

Have a career advice or debt free question? Click the ASKPB button! This week’s question was so good we couldn't help but dedicate a full show to our response. Apparently, the DMs aren't the only place it goes down. A few snippets: I always thought they were taboo but people at my current company frequently engage in dalliances and full blown relationships - sometimes resulting in marriage! The fact that so many people seem to be finding long term love at my company while I remain single is making me reconsider my stance. Many of us work long hours so there isn’t sufficient time outside of work to devote to finding love. There is also a sense of security in being already familiar with an officemate, and knowing they passed the same background check as I did. What are your thoughts? When, if ever, is it worth it to pursue a romantic relationship with someone at your workplace? We also discuss when it's appropriate to consult with your Human Resources and the pros and cons of taking this approach. Is it ever your responsibility to share knowledge of someone else’s interoffice romance with HR or managers? I never thought about snitching because of the potential negative repercussions for me and I didn’t want them getting in trouble. Outside of me just being a hater, their relationship is an HR issue. They are potentially up for a new position in which their partner would be their supervisor and that goes against policy since they could potentially show favoritism. Based on their current behavior, I see that being a reality. Is it unethical to mind my business and ignore the best interests of the company, or would it be underhanded and unnecessary to spill the beans? Sponsor Special thanks to our sponsor, FreshBooks. While some folks are of the opinion that Millennial’s affinity for avocados is the only thing keeping us from owning homes, we here at Paychecks & Balances offer opinions you can actually use. Opinions based on math and common sense when common sense is as uncommon as, apparently, Millennials who own a home. Marcus provides an update on the successes and lessons learned two weeks into the 50/30/20 Budget and Rich shares another win in the career column. This week’s PB segments we cover: Money Minute What’s the first step to developing a budget and debt free plan you’ll actually use? Focus on defining your “why.” A quick tip to modernize the “envelope system” with a few simple updates to your online checking account(s). How you can break the cycle of YOLO, FOMO, and debit cards draining your financial tank with debt by a thousand debits. This Week In Work Rich reflects on a recent promotion and the proactive steps he took to make his way towards another step in the American Dream: Middle Management. The pros and cons of the career ladder climb and why you might consider passing on a promotion if you’re a voluntold versus a volunteer. "Sound designers often find themselves alone in old clubs and theaters, usually late at night. Most people aren't aware of this, but these charming venues have lonely corridors and forgotten rooms throughout the building. Each is as dark and full of secrets as any ancient dungeon.  Working behind the scenes, it was my job to crawl through them. Better yet, it was a thrill to explore them. But I’m not out to convince readers about the supernatural, or even impress them with my knowledge of spirits and ghosts. EKKO Mysteries was written for those who enjoy pushing the adventure envelope, one after the other. My intention isn’t to get creepy, but to have fun. Every character in the series—living or not—has a personality, objective, and sense of humor matching his or her historical time frame. Does a ghost always have to be a roguish demon? Me thinks not. The spirits in EKKO don’t do a lot of searching and pondering: they come to life and get in your face. Good, bad, or indifferent. Our leading man, CJ, couldn't be happier about that."
