In this week's Northwest Florida Fishing Report, host Joe Baya covers a remarkably consistent late-summer pompano bite along the beaches, outstanding billfish action offshore, and an inshore mangrove snapper bite that can keep rods bent through the August heat. This episode features Blake Hunter with Reel30A, Capt. Adam Peeples with One Shot Charters, and Evan Wheeler with Tall Pines Tight Lines. Joe also joins Alabama Saltwater Fishing Report host Butch Thierry for a special conversation with the father-and-son team behind SlipSki about boat and dock covers built for waterfront conditions. Blake Hunter starts with the surf report, where pompano continue to hold along Walton, Okaloosa, and western Bay County beaches well beyond the traditional spring season. Some of the biggest fish of the summer are now being caught, including pompano pushing well beyond the four-pound mark. Blake believes consistently high salinity may be helping keep the fish on the beach and recommends keeping the presentation simple with a two-drop pompano rig, shrimp, and Fishbites. Pink, orange, chartreuse, and white have been productive colors, with Fishbites clam-scented baits matching the coquina clams showing up in the stomachs of these fish. He also looks ahead to the fall transition, when the first cold fronts and mullet movement could bring slot redfish back into the surf. Joe and Butch then talk with Daniel and Ed Bejrowski from SlipSki about the development of the company's aluminum boat and dock cover systems. They explain how SlipSki grew out of their experience installing a traditional canopy that they believed could be made stronger, more durable, and better suited for marine environments. The conversation covers marine-grade aluminum construction, removable canopy material for named storms, customization for existing docks, hurricane preparation, and the Dorado Oasis, which extends shade beyond the boat slip to cover much of the dock. They also discuss adapting SlipSki systems to different piling configurations, including composite EcoPile installations. Capt. Adam Peeples reports excellent bluewater action 40 to 60 miles offshore, with sailfish, white marlin, and blue marlin concentrated around clean water, favorable current, and huge amounts of bait. Adam recently put together two billfish slams during a three-day trip and explains how he fishes dredges, teasers, and swimming ballyhoo while staying relatively light on tackle. His current setup includes Shimano Talica BFC reels, 30-pound main line, 60-pound fluorocarbon leaders, small circle hooks, and medium Baitmasters ballyhoo. The swordfish bite has also improved, with multiple recent fish over 200 pounds, while Adam expects cooling water later this fall to improve wahoo and other pelagic opportunities around the nearshore FADs. Evan Wheeler wraps up with an inshore option for anglers looking for consistent action during the hottest part of the year. Mangrove snapper are showing up around deeper docks, bridge pilings, jetties, and other structure, giving anglers an opportunity to catch quality fish even when trout and redfish are less cooperative. Evan explains how current, depth, bait, shade, and structure determine where the fish position, and he recommends starting around 15-pound fluorocarbon over 20-pound braid before downsizing if the fish become leader-shy. Live menhaden are an excellent choice, but artificials can be equally productive. Evan has been catching mangroves on MirrOlures and durable Z-Man soft plastics paired with Pro-Cure and Eye Strike jig heads, allowing anglers to cover water and target better fish without spending the morning catching live bait. Everybody had a weekend, and unfortunately for all of us, they came back with stories.The crew kicks things off with the 100-inning softball game supporting the Burton family, where Rafe and Scott discover that 12 straight hours of softball is apparently something human beings willingly participate in. There were legitimate athletes, Chris Kerber brought the stories and good Blues energy, and Team Rizz did what Team Rizz does best: proudly represent athletic mediocrity while somebody else actually knows how to play the sport.Then Rafe takes us inside an entirely different competitive environment: Topgolf in Chesterfield.He showed up in jeans, a T-shirt and cowboy boots while seemingly everyone else arrived looking like they had just finished a private lesson at Bellerive. The clubs are nicer. The outfits are tighter. The dads appear to work in numbers. And somewhere along the way, Rafe introduces the world to the “Chesterfield Nine,” which naturally sends the entire funny podcast into an extremely mature and thoughtful discussion about golf.Just kidding. It immediately falls apart.Moon, meanwhile, spent his weekend in Los Angeles with Goldfinger for their biggest headlining show ever at the Hollywood Palladium. Between the packed hometown show, backstage chaos and trying to juggle approximately every person he has ever met in Southern California, Moon also wanders into Amoeba Music and suddenly finds himself standing next to Matt Berry. His carefully prepared celebrity interaction consists basically of realizing, “Holy crap, that's Matt Berry,” which honestly is probably better than anything the rest of us would've managed.Then comes the flight home.Delays pile up, passengers get increasingly irritated, everyone lines up to board…and the entire plane waits for one missing flight attendant. When she finally arrives, Moon witnesses a level of leisurely strolling that probably should've been studied by scientists. Hundreds of angry passengers? Connecting flights on the line? Whatever. She had a walking speed and she was committed to it.At least the delays gave Moon time to catch up on movies, leading to reviews of Michael, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Tomb Raider. We also get Banana Ball confusion, because apparently baseball wasn't complicated enough and now fans can become part of the defense.Rizz heads the opposite direction for a father-son road trip to the University of Arkansas and finally experiences the roadside cathedral known as Buc-ee's. Unfortunately, he discovers that Buc-ee's contains one fatal flaw: other people. Lots and lots of other people. He battles the crowd, buys a Cuban sandwich that immediately disintegrates inside the car and ultimately reaches the devastating conclusion that Buc-ee's is basically a bigger Wally's. Somewhere, a beaver just felt a disturbance in the Force.The Arkansas trip also gives Rizz a glimpse of the college experience he never had, complete with a massive campus, tens of thousands of students and enough Walton branding to remind everyone exactly where they are.Then the show discovers “sunshine guilt” — that weird feeling that you're wasting your life because it's gorgeous outside and you dared to remain indoors. Finally, a funny podcast willing to defend your constitutional right to sit inside watching television while nature aggressively tries to shame you through the windows.Moon gets it. But what if student well-being is much broader than mental health services alone? In this episode of On Campus, Dr. Maithreyi Gopalan, Associate Professor at the University of Oregon, for a discussion about how institutions can build a campus-wide approach to student well-being by focusing on belonging, connection, and student flourishing. Based on her research, Dr. Gopalan explains why a student's sense of belonging is strongly connected to persistence, graduation, academic success, and mental health outcomes. The conversation explores practical strategies for higher education leaders, including measuring belonging as an institutional outcome, conducting regular student pulse checks, strengthening advising and first-year experiences, and creating meaningful connections throughout the student journey. Paul Evans is the CEO of Solutions Leisure, one of the most recognised hospitality brands in the UAE with 23 venues across the region. But that is not the reason we brought him in. He grew up dyslexic and spent years being told he wasn't enough, and the decisions he made in his early twenties landed him in a UK prison cell at 21. What followed was years of searching for something he couldn't name, until his body made the decision for him. While building a business in Egypt, acute pancreatitis brought on by years of serious alcohol abuse put Paul in a coma for 77 days. Bowie Kuhn landed on the cover of the June 28, 1976 issue of Sports Illustrated because he had just done something nobody in baseball had done quite so boldly — voided three of the biggest player sales in the history of the sport. When Charlie Finley sold Vida Blue to the Yankees and Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the Red Sox all in a single afternoon, Kuhn stepped in and nullified every transaction, invoking his power to act in baseball's "best interests." Finley called him the village idiot, Billy Martin joked about pitching him, and the entire baseball world stopped to ask one question — just how much power does a commissioner actually have? That was enough to put Bowie Kuhn on the cover of Sports Illustrated. That same week two other seismic sports stories were playing out inside that June 28th issue. In boxing, George Foreman demolished Joe Frazier in five rounds, knocking him down twice before the referee stopped it — and Smokin' Joe announced his retirement on the spot with a perfect line: "It's time to put it on the wall and go boogie, boogie, boogie." And in basketball, after years of financial chaos and a 44-minute vote, the ABA officially ceased to exist — four franchises surviving into the NBA while the rest quietly disappeared, ending a nine-year experiment that gave the world Julius Erving, the three-point line, and a red, white and blue ball nobody took seriously until it was too late. Swen Nater's journey is one of the most unlikely in sports history. He grew up in the Netherlands, never played a high school game, and arrived at UCLA with almost no formal experience — spending two seasons as Bill Walton's practice player on back-to-back undefeated championship teams without ever starting. Yet the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him in the first round in 1973, making him the only player ever drafted that high without a college start. He chose the ABA instead, and after the Virginia Squires sold him off he landed with San Antonio and won ABA Rookie of the Year. When the merger came, Nater transitioned seamlessly, eventually becoming the only player in history to lead both the ABA and NBA in rebounding. Swen tells us what it was like to backup Walton, how Kareem kept him from signing with Milwaukee, and how Wilt Chamberlain taught him to become a ferocious rebounder. He tells us how John Wooden prepared him for the pros, how Don Nelson made him a better shooter, and the story of the time he and Lonnie Shelton got into it — and his wife's 80-year-old grandmother came onto the court to give him some assistance. He was walked two and a half miles on foot through Liverpool to a railway embankment in Walton, where his abductors beat him to death and laid his body across the tracks. He was found two days later. Roughly thirty-eight people had seen the three children together along the route; none intervened. Six days after the abduction, a woman recognized one of the boys from enhanced CCTV stills broadcast on national television and called Marsh Lane police station with two names — Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, both ten years old, both flagged on a truancy list that investigators had set aside on the assumption that the perpetrators were teenagers. The pair were arrested the same day and convicted at Preston Crown Court on November 24, 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history. Both were released on life licence with new identities at age eighteen in June 2001 under a court order granting them lifelong anonymity. Robert Thompson has not reoffended.
