Properties of luminous red supergiant stars in the Magellanic Clouds by S. de Wit et al. on Sunday 25 September There is evidence that some red supergiants (RSGs) experience short lived phases of extreme mass loss, producing copious amounts of dust. These episodic outburst phases help to strip the hydrogen envelope of evolved massive stars, drastically affecting their evolution. However, to date, the observational data of episodic mass loss is limited. This paper aims to derive surface properties of a spectroscopic sample of fourteen dusty sources in the Magellanic Clouds using the Baade telescope. These properties may be used for future spectral energy distribution fitting studies to measure the mass loss rates from present circumstellar dust expelled from the star through outbursts. We apply MARCS models to obtain the effective temperature ($T_{rm eff}$) and extinction ($A_V$) from the optical TiO bands. We use a $chi^2$ routine to determine the best fit model to the obtained spectra. We compute the $T_{rm eff}$ using empirical photometric relations and compare this to our modelled $T_{rm eff}$. We have identified a new yellow supergiant and spectroscopically confirmed eight new RSGs and one bright giant in the Magellanic Clouds. Additionally, we observed a supergiant B[e] star and found that the spectral type has changed compared to previous classifications, confirming that the spectral type is variable over decades. For the RSGs, we obtained the surface and global properties, as well as the extinction $A_V$. Our method has picked up eight new, luminous RSGs. Despite selecting dusty RSGs, we find values for $A_V$ that are not as high as expected given the circumstellar extinction of these evolved stars. The most remarkable object from the sample, LMC3, is an extremely massive and luminous evolved massive star and may be grouped amongst the largest and most luminous RSGs known in the Large Magellanic Cloud (log(L$_*$/L$_{odot})sim$5.5 and $R = 1400 , textrm R_{odot}$). arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11239v1
Abundance analysis of APOGEE spectra for 58 metal-poor stars from the bulge spheroid by R. Razera et al. on Wednesday 14 September The central part of the Galaxy host a multitude of stellar populations, including the spheroidal bulge stars, stars moved to the bulge through secular evolution of the bar, inner halo, inner thick disk, inner thin disk, as well as debris from past accretion events. We identified a sample of 58 candidate stars belonging to the stellar population of the spheroidal bulge, and analyse their abundances. The present calculations of Mg, Ca, and Si lines are in agreement with the APOGEE-ASPCAP abundances, whereas abundances of C, N, O, and Ce are re-examined. We find normal $alpha$-element enhancements in oxygen, similar to magnesium, Si, and Ca abundances, which are typical of other bulge stars surveyed in the optical in Baade's Window. The enhancement of [O/Fe] in these stars suggests that they do not belong to accreted debris. No spread in N abundances is found, and none of the sample stars is N-rich, indicating that these stars are not second generation stars originated in globular clusters. Ce instead is enhanced in the sample stars, which points to an s-process origin such as due to enrichment from early generations of massive fast rotating stars, the so-called spinstars arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2208.06634v3

In this edition of The Way Out, our beloved recovery podcast co-host Jason catches up with an old friend, Cynthia Baade who is a person in long term recovery and a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist Reciprocal. Now time for a moment of total and complete transparency for a purpose about this interview. One of Cynthia's little ones is in the background on and off as you heard in the intro and that continues in the interview along with a cacophony of background noise on and off. My first gut instinct was we needed to scrap the whole thing and re-record the entire interview. But then I decided I was going to start editing it anyhow, which now feels very much like a Higher Power moment. No doubt, the audio on this interview is far from perfect despite my best efforts to work my editing magic. What is also undeniably true is how genuinely authentic and refreshing it is to hear Cynthia tell her story with the medley of sounds that make up the day-to-day life of a parent in Recovery. Life isn't perfect and flawless, and either is recovery – and both are beautiful not despite the flaws but because of them. Without the flaws and imperfections Recovery and indeed life would be rather bland and uninspiring. I'm grateful to have a connection with my Higher Power that allowed me to recognize and embrace the beauty that lied beneath the imperfection so we all can hear Cynthia's amazing journey to and through recovery to this point. Cynthia is extremely honest and vulnerable in this conversation. Her natural storytelling ability will draw you in as she reveals her extensive history. We learn how she broke generational cycles and is starting a new kind of legacy for her own family. The purpose and love she has found in her life will inspire you and warm your heart so listen up. Ken Baade and Leonie Orgill can’t get enough of Christmas, and in particular the squeals of joy from the kids. Even the parents get excited! What matters most to the pair of them is the amount of joy and happiness they spread to their local community.Dressed in their full costumes, Santa Claus and Mrs Clause spend every Christmas in the driveway of Ken’s home handing out candy canes and spreading Christmas cheer to the hundreds of people that pass by every day.20 years ago Ken set up some Christmas lights and bought a $5 Santa suit and started handing out lollies in his driveway, prompting Leonie to join him some 12 years later. The duo has become a local hit, and they have no plans to stop in the near future.

This week's guest is stand-up comedian and host of the TV Guidance Counselor podcast Ken Reid, someone I have known for years in the Boston scene and whom I've covered occasionally for the Boston Globe. Reid is a good friend to have if you enjoy horror or comedy in film or television. On TV Guidance Counselor, he gives his guests a copy of TV Guide from their childhood and hashes out what they would have watched that particular week. Chances are, Reid has seen whatever show or movie his guests have seen, and probably owns the soundtrack. “I like to lead my life like the friend you go to to learn how to kill the monster that lives next door,” says Reid. “'I have a book on that somewhere,' like that kind of thing.” I've always enjoyed our conversations, so I'm happy to have him on the podcast, and also happy to have comedian and actor Jessie Baade back on the show as co-host. We dove right into obscurity in the very beginning when Reid mentions an exploitation movie that was just released on Blu-Ray, and we talked about certain children's movies, like The Peanut Butter Solution, that probably never should be shown to children. As a stand-up, Reid doesn't function like many of his peers. He doesn't crave people's laughter. It's not a high for him. What he wants to be able to do is walk in a room, tell the stories he wants to tell, and control the crowd. And the stories he tells have surprisingly little to do with pop culture. They are more personal, about his father getting his pants ripped off on an amusement park ride or his sister's Make-A-Wish experience with Boy George and a cage of ferrets. I won't describe that here – trust me, you're better off hearing the story from him on his comedy albums or better yet, live. By the way, in our discussion about music, I mention a Beatles' song people are still arguing about, trying to identify the opening chord. The song is actually “A Hard Days Night,” not “Help,” which came to mind first. And it should be mentioned, you can hear Reid's adorable clan of dogs barking every so often in the background. Our featured track of the week is “Momento de Clareza” from the upcoming album, Relax by Alexandre Kassin, who just goes by “Kassin” for this release. Kassin is an accomplished producer – he's worked with Bebel Gilberto, among dozens and dozens of others, and he's played bass with Caetano Veloso's bands. This is him stepping out on his ownThis is a grooving track with popping bass that reminds me of Paul McCartney's more danceable stuff from the late 70s and early 80s. It's light, upbeat, a perfect summer soundtrack song, but it's about an experience Kassin had narrowly missing a flight with his band that wound up crashing and killing 95 passengers. Kassin apparently enjoys mixing, as he says, “dark lyrics and happy sounds.” Relax is out May 11 from Luka Bop, and you can find out more at LukaBop.com.
Jenny Zigrino is still very much a comic on the rise. In the past two years, she has played notable roles in films like Bad Santa 2 and Fifty Shades of Black. Last year, she released her debut album, JZ's New Album, had her own Comedy Central Half Hour, and co-hosted an IFC digital series called The Filling Is Mutual with Jen Saunderson. In 2018, she's already appeared on Live from Here (formerly Prairie Home Companion) and has a Web series debuting in March for Comedy Central called Bad Ass Bitches of History. I covered her when she was getting started in stand-up in Boston a few years back, and for this interview, brought along a mutual friend, comedian and actor Jessie Baade. That made for a fun conversation, talking of course about Zigrino's current projects and future plans, but also about the body-positive and sex-positive philosophy she applied in her stand-up, the power of burlesque, the isolation of touring, and a lot more. We started the conversation talking about a podcast Zigrino and fellow comedian Gary Petersen had thought of producing in which they cured their boredom on tour by creating characters inspired by the people they meet. They abandoned the idea, but I'm hoping not forever. Our featured track this week comes from former podcast guest Matt Minigell, who appeared way back in episode 14 with Mary Lou Lord and Annabelle Lord-Patey. He's got a new album out now called Guts, and the featured track from that, “Even In My Dreams (I'm Falling),” is available now on BandCamp.
